Full text“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity" (WHO definition). Therefore WHO and the Ministry of Health in Syria implemented the "Healthy Villages" program in 1996. It aims at improving the population's economic, social and health condition in the country. It should decrease the big difference in health care between urban and rural populations. The project objective is to statistically analyze the influence of the program on economic and health parameters in comparison with other villages not related to the program. For this purpose, survey data is collected and appraised in Syria. The evaluation of the survey in the present work showed that the program achieved successfully its objectives regarding the improvement of the health and quality of life in the "Healthy villages" program. In addition to the reduction of the number of working children, encouraging women to work and continue studying, as well as to reduce the illiteracy rate. However these results are not applied to northern and Eastern region.

Full textThis thesis presents the results of an explorative survey of industrial involvement in open source. The survey is performed in collaboration with participants from the European ITEA project, COSI (Co-development using inner & Open source in Software Intensive products). The survey was performed to explore aspects of industrial involvement in open source, as industrial management of open source project, industrial use of open source components, related development, and communication processes, and industrial relationships to the open source community. The survey is based on a survey of open source literature, structured interviews of IT industry personnel, and a questionnaire. Three Norwegian companies participated in the interviews, which were used to explore interesting issues, and to provide input to the questionnaire. The questionnaire collected answers from industrial partners in the European COSI project. Our research has an explorative research goal, and five research questions. Each research question shed light on an interesting topic, and their answers will be presented accordingly. These answers are in form of both of qualitative and quantitative answers, but primarily descriptive information. It has been found that companies participate in open source related development with the roles open source owner, open source participant, inner source participant, and user of open source components. These roles will be explained further, together with the answers to the five research questions. We start with a presentation of the motivations behind use of open source components, and the selection processes used to find, and evaluate these components. Then, experiences from companies which have started their own open source projects will be discussed. Next, we describe the use of software development methodologies from open source, within companies. Furthermore, we present results related to the impact open source, have on company internal development processes. Finally, industrial participation in open source projects by companies will be analyzed. The answers to the research questions form part of the contribution of this thesis. Some of these results are used to create guidelines for open source management, and open source component selection. We have also proposed twelve hypotheses, based on our findings. These hypotheses will work as a basis for future studies, together with other results, and our research design. Future studies may include distribution of the questionnaire to a bigger sample, focus on fewer issues, and use of other research methods to shed light on these issues.

A new type of solar cell technology using so-called thin-film solar photovoltaic material has the potential to make a great impact on our lives. Because it uses very little or no silicon at all, thin- film (TF) solar technology promises to reduce the cost of solar modules to a level where solar power could compete effectively with power generated from fossil fuel alternatives, thus accelerating our society's transition to distributed, renewable forms of energy sources. Furthermore, because thin-film solar PV materials can be applied to surfaces as varied as glass, plastic and flexible metal foils, this emerging technology could open up new range of applications that otherwise would not be possible using traditional solar cells. The scope of this thesis is to analyze the technical merits of the different thin-film solar technologies, their market and applications, and the dynamics of a growing, new industry. We will compare the different thin-film solar technologies against each other and against the dominant poly-silicon technology. Next, we will take a look at the make up of the thin-film industry and study the different technology strategies employed by players in this industry. We'll highlight a few manufacturers of each type of technology and present a snapshot of the industry in terms of current production and forecasted manufacturing capacity. We'll conclude with a technology outlook and recommend possible technology strategies for firms contemplating entering this industry.

Hauge, Øyvind. "Open Source Software in Software Intensive Industry - A Survey." Thesis, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Computer and Information Science, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:no:ntnu:diva-9653.
Full textThe use of Open Source Software (OSS) has increased in both the industry and the public sector. The software intensive industry integrates OSS into their products, participates in the development of OSS products, and develops its own OSS products. The understanding of how and why the industry is approaching OSS is so far limited. To help fill this gap, this thesis intends to explore how and why the software intensive industry approaches OSS. This is done by performing an extensive literature study and by executing a web-based survey. This survey is distributed to a near representative sample of companies from the Norwegian software intensive industry and to a convenience sample of participants in the ITEA 2 research program. The research presented here shows that OSS components are widely used in the software intensive industry. Close to 50% of the Norwegian software intensive industry uses OSS in its development. The industry is mainly motivated to use OSS by practical reasons. OSS components provide functionality of high quality and the industry is satisfied with its use of these components. When using OSS, the industry benefits from the availability of source code, and easy access to components and information about these components. Companies participate in OSS projects because they use the software and because of the learning effect of this participation. The participation is however limited. However, some companies provide commercial services related to the OSS projects they participate in. Releasing a product as OSS attracts more users and customers to a product. These community members may contribute with implemented code, feedback, and requirements. There are, however some side-effects related to releasing an OSS product and companies should be aware of these consequences. The main contributions of this thesis are new understanding of how and why companies approach OSS, a reusable research design, and experiences performing survey research.

Organizational maps can help teams and organizations improve how they manage their human and social capital. Yet, keeping track of the relationships in an organization is a complex, labor-intensive, and time-consuming task. Here I present MITeams: an automated visualization tool for quick organizational mapping. MITeams uses email metadata to map the pattern of communications within an team and combines this information with demographic and psychological variables collected from externally validated surveys included in MITeams. These capacities allow MITeams to create maps of teams and organizations, combining communication and psychological variables, in a matter of hours. I present several use cases of MITeams with the user experience of a research team. User study is conducted with another research team to validate MITeams's the ability in mapping the communication pattern and assisting members learn team knowledge. Our results show that MITeams can be used to quickly map organizations, and help their members get a deeper understanding about team communication network and dynamics in a short time.

The Carbon Capture and Sequestration Technologies Program in the Laboratory for Energy and the Environment at MIT conducted a survey of public attitudes on energy use and environmental concerns. Over 1,200 people, representing a general population sample of the United States, responded. The survey asked a representative sample of the American public seventeen questions about the environment, global warming, and climate change-mitigation technologies. The analysis in this thesis uses the survey responses to draw conclusions about the level of public understanding and awareness of global climate change and carbon dioxide capture and storage and to suggest implications for public outreach. The survey results show that carbon dioxide capture and storage and carbon sequestration are largely unknown to the general public, and there is significant confusion over which environmental issue the technology is intended to address. The environment is not a top priority for the U.S. public, and global warming is not the top environmental concern, even for those concerned about the environment. The public's willingness to pay to solve global warming increases when an individual is concerned about the environment or believes that immediate action is necessary to address global warming. An experiment within the survey shows that a large portion of the public supports investment in renewable energy technologies but that support decreases when cost information for all climate mitigation technologies is provided.

Changes in the external environment and the dental needs of the public have placed greater demands on dental schools to graduate dentists better prepared to enter dental practice. New disease patterns, an aging population, and technological advancements, as well as, rising tuition and a decline in the applicant pool, are factors which are forcing dental educators to re-evaluate the curriculum and create new methods in which dentistry can be taught. One such method, experiential learning, has been a major component in professional education for many years. Law schools and medical schools have utilized the court system and hospitals respectively to train students to function in a professional environment. Only on a limited basis have dental schools embraced off-campus facilities to assist them in their training. In 1989, Boston University’s Goldman School of Graduate Dentistry responded to this need for change by restructuring its pre-doctoral curriculum. The restructured curriculum introduced new approaches to science, technology, and healthcare management. One very important addition to the pre-doctoral curriculum is the Applied Professional Experience Program (APEX.) The APEX Program, the first of its kind in dental education, allows students to alternate between the classroom and clinical studies, and dental clerkships in Boston area dental practices. The APEX Program enables dental students to function as dental interns while receiving paid professional work experience. It is hoped that the APEX experience will produce a more well-rounded graduate, who has had the opportunity to function in a professional dental environment throughout his or her education. Experiential learning, the educational concept for APEX, develops a strong link between dental education and the actual delivery of health care services. APEX benefits all who are involved with the program: the student, the school, the dentist, and the dental community. Since its beginning the program has been continuously monitored through an on-going evaluation process to ensure that the program’s goals and objectives are being met. On average, 50 dental offices have been required to meet the needs of the program. As dental offices have withdrawn from the program, new offices have been recruited to replace them. To date, a total of 14 dental offices have withdrawn from the program. As part of the on-going program evaluation process, this project will describe and compare the similarities and differences of the dental offices which are currently participating in the APEX Program with those dental offices which have withdrawn from the program. It will also be comparing the similarities and differences of the attitudes of the dentists regarding APEX, student involvement, and perceived benefits for the dentist, the dentist’s staff, and the APEX intern.

Full textThis report presents a three-step investigation conducted to identify problems and challenges experienced by small and medium sized organizations procuring software intensive systems. Archival research is carried out to see if the available procurement guidelines are applicable for small and medium sized organizations. Data has been collected through questionnaires and interviews with the organizations employees responsible for software procurements. The quantitative data has been analyzed using statistical methods, in an attempt to identify the main weaknesses in the current procurement procedures. In addition, the qualitative data are analyzed to complement the findings made from the quantitative data. Results indicate that the organizations who participated in the survey seldom follow a predefined procedure when they execute software procurements. However, organizations that do have a defined, formalized procurement procedure are significantly more satisfied with their procurements. In addition, risk management is seldom integrated in software procurements despite the fact that the organizations to some extent consider software procurement as a risky activity. Recommendations derived from the survey results are offered to increase the organizations ability to procure and use software intensive systems.

Full textEmpirical research is performed to verify theories, develop new theories, or extend the existing ones, and improve practice. This study is mainly used to gain understanding about the selection of OSS components with the ultimate goal to improve the software development practice in industry, particularly to improve the practice of selection of OSS components. This study does can not be used directly to improve the practice of selection and evaluation of OSS components, because further and larger studies needs to be performed in the future to support our results. It is anyway a good step toward the final goal. We have used the role: integrator of open source, because this is the most appropriate for the research we have performed. More and more companies integrate open source components in their products because the benefits are large. Therefore, improving the practice about the selection of OSS components may help software companies to decrease the time spent. If the time spent is too large, this can offset the advantages of integrating OSS components. The results of the interview are presented, 16 descriptive findings are formulated based on this. The literature study was very useful to gain understanding about the state-off-the-art but also to define the research questions.

Full textA health survey, held in 2001 in two administrative districts of the city of Sao Paulo (inhabited by 190,000 people) was used to measure the impact of the \"Family Health Program\" - QUALIS in referred morbidity and lifestyle for those 15 and older. Through univariate and multivariate analysis, using several socioeconomic measures, we came to the conclusion that there are differences in chronicle morbidity between the populations attended or not by the program. It is so, possibly, due to a larger access to Primary Health System with this new strategy. There is basically no difference concerning lifestyle.

Full textThis thesis takes a closer look at how various contract models affect the ability to use agile software development, and the work being done to help improve contracts so they better facilitate agile principles. Agile development methods are becoming increasingly popular, while most contractual standards are meant for plan-based development methods. There are done little research regarding the subject, but it is a growing concern in the industry. Work is also currently done on Norwegian contractual frameworks that aim to update two commonly used contracts. The research done consist of several interviews with industry practitioners representing Norwegian consultancy companies experienced in agile development methods. It also includes interviews of contract experts in addition to a search and study of the literature on the subject. These interviews have been analyzed and compared to literature on the subject. The results of the research revealed a number of challenges with today's contract models. Several discoveries showed difficulties with bureaucracy and customer involvement. Using traditional contracts could also easily require more upfront work than what is sensible when using agile methods. It is possible to bypass these challenges by either adapting the development method, or putting the contract aside.

The partitioning of a system can and will dictate the creative space for a designer or engineer. This thesis will analyze how using a new automotive architecture known as a Front End Module (FEM) can affect a limited specific subset of stakeholders. Through the use of interviews of subject matter experts, literature research and the use of System Design Management tools, an in depth analysis will be done on the FEM and how it affects the craftsmanship, damageability and assembly attributes. It will be shown how the craftsmanship attribute can be improved through the strategic use of FEM's to allow for a feed-forward system where build data are incorporated into upcoming FEM builds. Even with this advantage, the FEM architecture will not negatively impact the damageability attribute or assembly attribute if the proper design cues and strategies are followed. The FEM will also be intensely analyzed using the tools from the MIT SDM program where it will be evaluated as an architecture itself through the specific and targeted intent and beneficiary breakdown. The analysis will also include an Object/Process Mapping analysis where it will be proposed that the true customer of the automotive front end is not the individual that purchased the vehicle but rather the visual society as a whole. Finally, a managerial approach will be taken for the analysis of the inherent and inevitable supplier relationship that is required with using this FEM architecture. Interviews were conducted with two suppliers of OEM's and their common road blocks will be analyzed such as lack of holistic thinking or failure to understand the role of the system integrator. Proposed next steps will be laid out to address these barriers in order to open the communication channels between the supply base and the Original Equipment Manufacturers.
