BALCONI, PAOLO. "IL ROMANZO EPISTOLARE NELL'INGHILTERRA DEL SETTECENTO: IL CASO DI JANE AUSTEN." Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/689.

Abstract:
The dissertation focuses on the epistolary novel in England in the second half of the eighteenth century, particularly on works written by women. The purpose of this study is to understand how Jane Austen (with her early writings and “Lady Susan”) represents both a synthesis of and a turning point in eighteenth-century novels in letters. In particular, two fields of study will converge into the works by Jane Austen: the first part, divided into three chapters, focuses on the importance of Samuel Richardson at the middle of the century (chapter 1) and of some woman writers such as Sarah Fielding, Charlotte Smith and Frances Burney (chapter 2), whereas chapter 3 is dedicated to the “golden period” of the English epistolary novel during the ‘80s and ‘90s. The second part of the dissertation is divided into four chapters and focuses more specifically on Jane Austen’s role within the development of the style and the fortune of the novel in letters. After a short autobiography of the author and an analysis of the correspondence between her and her sister Cassandra (chapters 4 and 5) in order to underline the importance of letters in Jane Austen’s upbringing, chapter 6 is dedicated to the Juvenilia, that is to say the works written between 15 to 20 years of age, while chapter 7 focuses on “Lady Susan”, a novel which represents the renunciation of the epistolary style by the author.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The effect of eight cycles of recurrent selection, applied to the Suwann DMR corn population, was investigated. The main interest was to verify the effect of selection concerning the expected and realized genetic progress on grain yield and the amount further progress. In addition, specific expressions of the effective population size (Ne) were developed, according to the selection procedure adopted. The second cycle population was taken as reference point to calculate N e. The Institution EMPASC (a research organization of the State of Santa Catarina for agriculture and livestock, Chapecó, SC, Brazil), through its corn population improvement program, provided the necessary data for this work. The period between 1979/80 and 1986/87 was covered. Selection among and within half sib families (SAWHSF) was the basic scheme applied, except for the obtention of the second cycle where a simple stratified mass selection was used. SAWHSF was conducted with two modifications, in relation to the original scheme, namely: a) evaluation of progenies, selection and intercrossing of superior plants, as basic steps of such a scheme, were carried out all in the same area; b) to compose the male rows, a previous selection of ears was made in the laboratory, such that not the whole set of progenies under evaluation contribute as male parents. Progenies were evaluated in randomized complete blocks with replications only after the second cycle and checks (commercial hybrids) incorporated in the progeny tests, only after the first cycle. Estimates of phenotypic and genotypic components of variation were obtained through the analyses of variance. In the case of higher stand variation, the covariance procedure was also applied. In all cases estimates were calculated considering expected values of mean squares. Selection differentials were taken to obtain expected progresses estimates (Gse). The inclusion of common checks in trials of subsequent years, permitted estimating realized gains (GSo.Considering the last five cycles of selection the folowing estimates (and reanges) could be obtained for grain yield: coefficient of heritability on a progeny mean basis: ĥ2m(%) =39.08 (29.07 to 42.31); coefficient of heritability on a plant basis: ĥ2i(%) = 16.52 (12.52 to 22.05); (C.V.g) / (C.V.e = 0.51 (0.46 to 0.61); additive genetic variance: ô2A (g/pl)2 = 316 (70 to 653); Gse (% / cycle) = 5.52 (2.48 to 7.50); Gso (% / cycle) = 5.95 (-7.07 to 19.09); accumulated expected progress: Gsea (%) = 27.6; accumulated observed progress: Gsoa (%) = 29.8; percentage of selection among and within progenies: 33.75 (15.29 to 68.63) and 4.99 (3.54 to 6.58), respectively; effective population size per cycle: Ne = 193 (135 to 349); average grain yield: Ȳ(g/planta) = 117.8 (66.8 to 186.0). Despite of the very narrow genetic base of original population suwan DMR, its additive genetic variance was comparable to additive genetic variances found for broader base populations of corn in Brazil. Particularly important was the finding that changes in the amount of additive genetic variance could not be attributed to selection. In fact, after the eight cycles, the genetic variance is still sufficiently large to guarantee additional gains, through selection. The selection scheme here adopted permitted the maintenance of relatively high N e values, from one cycle to the next, despite the relatively low selection percentages chosen throughout the program.

Abstract:
Sudan is endowed with a great diversity of tree species; nevertheless the utilization of wood resources has traditionally concentrated on a few species only. Despite of the richness of Sudan in most of basic factors required to establish forest based industries it still almost entirely dependent on imports to satisfy its needs of the products of such industries. There is an urgent need to assess the suitability of the local fibrous raw materials for industrial utilization, this would not only reduce imports, but they would also provide an economic incentive to the forestry and industrial sectors of Sudan. Sudan has a wide variation of climatic zones, thus; great variations are expected in the anatomical and physical properties between and within species grown in each zone. This variation needs to be fully explored in order to suggest best uses for the species. The present study was carried out to assess the suitability of Acacia seyal var. seyal Del and Balanites aegyptiaca (L.) Delile wood for pulp and paper making (PPM) and flooring industry, as well as to investigate the effect of rainfall zones on selected wood properties. For this purpose, a total of thirty trees per species were collected from four states in Sudan, namely: Blue Nile, North Kordofan, South Kordofan and White Nile. The study areas located in two precipitation zones. Zone one with 273 mm mean annual rainfall, and zone two with 701 mm mean annual rainfall. Wood samples in form of disc were obtained from two heights within each tree, which are 10 % and 90 % from the tree merchantable height. Anatomical, physical and mechanical investigations were conducted in order to test the wood properties of the study species. The studied anatomical properties were: fibre and vessel diameter, lumen diameter and wall thickness. In addition to fibre length and three fibre derived values, namely: flexibility coefficient, Runkel ratio and slenderness ratio. The trend of fiber length from pith to bark was determined. The anatomical composition was described. Wood density was investigated as a main physical property. Basic density as well as air dry density were measured in the current study. Additionally, the density was measured using X-ray densitometry method in order to assess its suitability as a valid tool for the study species density determination. The trend of wood basic density from pith to bark was also determined. Brinell hardness strength was measured in the transverse and radial sections. According to the study results, the fibre length of both species considered as medium (900 -1600 μm). However, Acacia seyal has longer fiber. Acacia seyal wood density considered heavy (≥ 720 kg/m³) while that of Balanites aegyptiaca is medium (500 - < 720 kg/m³). Depending upon the mean values of hardness strength in transverse as well as radial sections, the wood of both species can be classified as very hard (up to 146 N/mm2 hardness strength). Fibre length and wood density for both species followed the increase trend from the pith to the bark. The X-ray densitometry technique is considered as a valid tool for wood density determination for both species. For each species, some wood properties (in mature wood) were significantly affected by the water stress in the drier zone. For instance, Acacia seyal fibre length was negatively affected, while vessel wall thickness, basic density as well as hardness strength of the radial section were positively affected. In case of Balanites aegyptiaca the following properties were affected: vessel dimensions (negatively) and basic density (positively). However, the water stress did not affect Acacia seyal fibre and vessel diameter and lumen diameter, fiber wall thickness, flexibility coefficient, Runkel ratio and hardness strength in transverse section. Balanites aegyptiaca fibre characteristics and hardness strength did not show any response to water stress as well. In general, the overall wood properties of the study species considered compatible for PPM and flooring industry. However, trees growing in the more humid zone are preferable for both industries, due to their lower wood density and longer fibres in case of Acacia seyal and lower density in case of Balanites aegyptiaca.

Abstract:
Analytic philosophy places great emphasis on clarity. But what does ‘clarity’ mean and how can we think more clearly? How does clarity connect with other virtues of analytic philosophy? ‘How can we think more clearly?’ introduces L. Susan Stebbing (1885–1943) who published the first textbook of analytic philosophy in 1930, doing more than anyone to promote the development of analytic philosophy in Britain. Stebbing’s work outlines different types of thinking—purposive, logical, and critical—discussing a range of ways we can be misled, from logical fallacies and potted thinking to analogies and ambiguity. In drawing our attention to them, Stebbing shows how we can think more clearly by avoiding them.
