Abstract:
Evidence is presented that native populations of Rudbeckia hirta L. (Blackeyed Susan) may be adapted to regional conditions. Two Florida ecotypes, one from north Florida (NFL) and one from central Florida (CFL), were better able to withstand the low fertility sites under three AHS Heat Zones (9, 10, 11) in Florida than were plants grown from Texas (TEX) seeds. Plants from TEX seed were the largest and showiest (generally the greatest number of flowers; largest flowers) but the shortest-lived. Most of these plants did not survive beyond August (about 6 months after transplanting) regardless of site. The CFL plants were especially tolerant of flooding conditions at Ft. Lauderdale. Under garden conditions, CFL Black-eyed Susan may be a highly desirable wildflower for subtropical or tropical summers.

Keever, Gary J., J. Raymond Kessler, and James C. Stephenson. "Bulking Duration Affects Growth and Flowering of Herbaceous Perennials Grown Under Nursery Conditions and Forced Into Flower Under Night-Interrupted Lighting Outdoors in the Southern United States." Journal of Environmental Horticulture 32, no. 1 (March 1, 2014): 19–26. http://dx.doi.org/10.24266/0738-2898.32.1.19.

Full text
Abstract:
The effects of bulking duration on growth and flowering of ‘Goldsturm’ black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia fulgida Ait. ‘Goldsturm’) and ‘Moonbeam’ coreopsis (Coreopsis verticillata L. ‘Moonbeam’) forced into flower under nursery conditions were evaluated as part of a system for the accelerated production of herbaceous perennials requiring long days to flower. Bulking duration treatments were established by a factorialization of potting date (September 24, October 13, December 2, and December 14, 2009) and night-interrupted lighting (NIL) start date (February 1, February 22, and March 15, 2010). Leaf counts of black-eyed Susan at the beginning of NIL increased linearly with progressively longer bulking durations based on potting date and NIL start date, although the effect was more pronounced when compared across potting dates. Based on leaf counts, black-eyed Susan potted in December were still in the juvenile phase when NIL was begun on February 1, 2010. Stem counts of black-eyed Susan at first flower followed a similar pattern as leaf counts. Black-eyed Susan given NIL flowered 40 to 59 days before plants under natural photoperiod (NP). Flower plus flower bud counts of black-eyed Susan at first flower increased linearly with increasing bulking duration based on potting date: by 325, 268, and 243% when NIL was begun on February 1, February 22, and March 15, respectively. Flower counts also increased linearly approximately 46% with increasing bulking duration based on NIL start dates, but only when plants were potted in December. At first flower, plant height of black-eyed Susan given NIL increased linearly as bulking duration increased based on potting date, but did not differ when trended across the NIL start dates. Days to flower of coreopsis decreased with increasing bulking duration, while stem counts increased with bulking duration, and the number of marketable plants was greater when plants were repotted on the three earliest dates compared to those bulked the shortest duration. Effects of bulking duration on flower plus flower bud counts and height of coreopsis were inconsistent.

Abstract:
Because of the need to find plants that suppress root lesion nematodes for use in rotation or cover-crops, 16 native sand-prairie species were evaluated for host status for 6 years. Plants were grown on a Fox sand soil at a local prairie plant nursery. Soil cores were taken in the spring, summer, and fall and assayed for plant parasitic nematodes. Five species supported very low numbers (less than 100/kg soil) of root lesion nematodes. Brown-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) had no detectable nematodes for the duration. Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) and Indiangrass (Sorghastrum nutans L., Nash) samples produced detectable nematodes on only two sampling dates over the 6 years and were statistically not different from brown-eyed Susan. Butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa L.) also had very low detectable nematodes as did sand dropseed [Sporobolus cryptandrus (Torr.) Gray.]. New Jersey tea (Ceanothus americanus L.), little bluestem [Schizachyrium scoparium (Michx.) Nash], and big bluestem (Andropogon gerardi Vitman) were poor hosts with <200 nematodes/kg soil. Mountain mint (Pycnanthemum virginianum L), wild bergamont (Monarda fistulosa L), horsemint (Monarda punctata L), and dwarf blazing star (Liatris cylindracea L) all had root lesion populations over 3000/kg soil. Horsemint and wild bergamont plants died out, possibly as a result of nematode infestation. Root lesion nematodes have an extremely wide host range in current agronomic and horticultural crops, and weeds and are difficult to manage using nonchemical means. Indiangrass, switchgrass, big bluestem, and little bluestem have all been used agriculturally for pastures and consequently have potential as beneficial long-term rotation crops for nematode management and soil building.

Abstract:
Boundary Object is a term taken from the sociology of knowledge and coined by Susan L. Star and James R. Griesemer (1989). It describes physical objects with the properties of ,interpretive flexibility‘ of a specific scale and structure. Employing this concept I explain the success of Albrecht Haller’s poetic collection Versuch Schweizerischer Gedichte. In the paper it is shown that the collection of poems shares the characteristics of a Boundary Object. It takes into account the material aspects of the publications and describes changes in the system of literary genres within the 1740s.
