The slippage of cable clamps during the long-term operation of suspension bridges is a common and detrimental phenomenon. From an experimental point of view, the cable clamp slippage of a suspension bridge was investigated to reveal the effect of this sliding on the force acting on the full bridge. The calculation results showed that the cable clamp slippage directly affects the cable forces of the hangers. The hanger cable force decreased by 19.2% when the slippage reached 10.2 cm, while

One of the important elements of the high-voltage transmission line is 110 kV, the damage of which leads to under-supply of electricity, i.e. reducing the reliability of the lines. Damage to the reinforcement from the applied load occurs due to material fatigue. The main causes of damage to the reinforcement are ambient temperatures and wind forces on this element. Periodic kinks of the wire are observed at the places of installation of the connecting and supporting clamps, vibration dampers, and cyclic lateral forces arise. The simultaneous impact of the above efforts leads to fatigue damage

In long-term exposures for 35 d, soft-shell clams (Mya arenaria) were maintained in a flow-through suspension of intertidal sediment (100–200 mg∙L−1) and in a control treatment of ambient sand-filtered seawater, each with microalgae as a food source. Weekly measurements demonstrated a significant decrease in oxygen consumption and increase in ammonia excretion through time in the turbidity treatment compared with controls. Atomic O:N ratios fell to 14 for exposed clams and remained at 27 for controls, suggesting that exposed clams were utilizing body reserves to meet nutritional needs. Dry tis

The present contribution presents a preliminary investigation of the chemical composition with respect to major, minor, trace, and ultratrace elements in several clam species that are frequently used for human consumption in Portuguese markets and worldwide. In order to use a simple and rapid analytical methodology for clam analysis, energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometry and total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) spectrometry were selected as analytical techniques. The analytical capabilities of TXRF spectrometry were evaluated for the determination of minor and trace e

Professor Whyte, in his article “Sometimes Constitutions are Made in the Streets: the Future of the Charter’s Notwithstanding Clause,” raises some intriguing points. He gives a historical review of the origin of the “notwithstanding” clause as it appears in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, enacted in 1982. In the course of so doing, he appears to propose a distinction between “rights” – those claims which are included in the Charter, and “policies” – those claims which are protected by the activities of the legislative and executive arms of government. This is, I argue, a false dic

Abstract:
The simulation method for prolate spheroids in Stokes flow introduced in a companion paper (Claeys & Brady 1993a) is extended to handle statistically homogeneous unbounded dispersions. The convergence difficulties associated with the slow decay of velocity disturbances at zero Reynolds number are overcome by applying O';Brien's renormalization procedure. The Ewald summation technique is employed to accelerate the evaluation of all mobility interactions. As a first application of this new method, the hydrodynamic transport properties of equilibrium hard-ellipsoid structures are calculated f

The rapid appearance of bilaterian clades at the beginning of the Phanerozoic is one of the most intriguing topics in macroevolution. However, the complex feedbacks between diversification and ecological interactions are still poorly understood. Here, we show that a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the trace-fossil record of the Ediacaran–Cambrian transition indicates that body-plan diversification and ecological structuring were decoupled. The appearance of a wide repertoire of behavioural strategies and body plans occurred by the Fortunian. However, a major shift in benthic ecologica

ATP transiently increases the intracellular Ca2+ concentration in cardiac myocyte suspensions. Pretreatment with norepinephrine (NE) greatly potentiates the ATP response. We performed experiments on adult rat myocyte suspensions loaded with fura-2 to investigate the mechanism of NE potentiation. We found that forskolin (an activator of adenylate cyclase), 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (an inhibitor of phosphodiesterase), and permeative adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) analogues potentiate the increase in cytosolic Ca2+ concentration induced by ATP.
