Abstract:
Aquaculture is growing rapidly in Banjar District of Kalimantan Selatan Province, including on Riam Kanan Reservoir which is a center for floating net cage aquaculture. The increasing aquaculture on Riam Kanan Reservoir is not supported by adequate and actual data regarding the distribution, number of plots and number of fishery household (FHs) of floating net cage aquaculture. Complete, accurate and actual data is needed as one of the considerations in implementing sustainable aquaculture management policies. This study aims to map the distribution of floating net cages based on zones and business scale level, analyze the number of plots and the number of FHs of floating net cage aquaculture on Riam Kanan Reservoir. The study was conducted in July-October 2019 using 2 survey methods: a drone survey to collect aerial photographs and a field survey to identify the number of FHs and floating net cage plots based on business scale level. The results of aerial photography were analyzed using the Agisoft Metashape Professional and Arcgis 10.7 applications. Field survey data were analyzed using the Archgis 10.7 application and Microsoft Excel. The floating net cage is spread over 6 zones totaling 4,263 plots, consisting of criteria for small business scale 1,774 plots, medium scale 1,234 plots and large scale 1,255 plots. FHs of floating net cage aquaculture spread in 7 villages as many as 425 units with the criteria of 331 small scale business, 87 medium scale and 28 large scale. The plots and FHs of floating net cage aquaculture on Riam Kanan Reservoir has increased significantly over the past 4 years.

Abstract:
The Philippines has long been recognized as a center of marine biodiversity, hence, rich in marine resources. However, fisheries production has been declining in recent years. On the other hand, aquaculture now contributes about half of the total fisheries production. Notably, production from marine pens and cages (mostly milkfish) has increased dramatically in the last two decades. Mariculture areas are designed for production of marine fishes through sea cage culture, farming of seaweeds, mussels and oysters, sea ranching of abalone, aquasilviculture, and others that may be developed through continuing R&D programs. Much discussion has focused on how to achieve sustainability in aquaculture. Concerns are related to the expansion and intensification of aquaculture including its impact on the environment, outbreaks of diseases, sustainability of supply of seed, feed ingredients and feeding practices, and competition for coastal space.

Aquaculture is a fast-expanding industry that is now essential to the provision of sustainable food. Traditional aquaculture techniques do, however, confront several difficulties, such as high operating costs, water scarcity, and environmental degradation. This study examines how cutting-edge technologies like cage culture, aquaponics, Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), and Biofloc Technology (BFT) provide contemporary ways to improve fish farming's sustainability and output. Aquaculture is becoming a more eco-friendly and efficient practice thanks to integrated systems like Integrated Fish Farming (IFF) and Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) and the Internet of Things (IoT). Together, these developments help aquaculture's future by providing creative, sustainable ways to satisfy the world's growing food needs while reducing its negative effects on the environment. <strong>&nbsp;</strong>

Abstract:
Not only does the Hoa Binh reservoir play essential roles in water storage for electricity generation and flood regulation, but also it has great potential to aid aquaculture production. Presently, aquaculture production sits at around 9,200 tons/year; however, a recent MARD circular (#16 in 2015) estimated that maximum production would approach 10,000 tons/year in the productive photic zone. This paper supports increased capacity towards a sustainable commodity production model by optimizing production levels and farming practices. To reach this goal, it is necessary to determine water quality parameters using the Relative Water Quality Index (ReWQI) and carrying capacity (CC) analysis. Data was obtained from 30 sites at upstream, midstream, and downstream sections of the reservoir during the 2019 dry and wet seasons. The results from the ReWQI reflected good water quality potential (rated between 92-100) for aquaculture. The total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) levels of 10,794.9 kg/day and 1,965.4 kg/day, respectively, indicate high biological productivity resulting in strong fish growth potential. CC analysis and overall water quality reflect the potential for sustainable and increased productivity to 22,730.4 tons/year, which is an increase in production of over 13,200 tons/year compared to the current period. To reach a higher yield of 40 kg/year/m3 within each cage (5,040 kg/cage/year), the corresponding increase in number needs to be 4,510 cages based on a common cage size of 126 m3 (6x6x3.5 m). In order to reach these future production goals, this work concludes that the local government should begin spatial planning decisions based on appropriate cage allocation and distribution with respect for regular monitoring of water quality and nutrient load capacity of the environment to reach sustainable aquaculture development.

Abstract In this study, the floating cage aquaculture in Indonesia, specifically the effect on sedimentation in surrounding areas will be studied. In addition to waves and currents, sedimentation is a considerable environmental concern. This result could help establish additional criteria for 1) selecting suitable aquaculture locations, 2) assessing the effect of aquaculture on the environment, and 3) developing sustainable marine aquaculture industry in Indonesia. This is important because, as an archipelago, Indonesia is expected to play a significant role in providing food supplies from marine aquaculture. The results are from a case study in Situbondo, East Java in which the hydrodynamics and sedimentation are simulated using the Delft3D model with an energy-loss coefficient included in the model to account for floating cages.

Abstract:
The Haor region in northeastern Bangladesh, characterized by seasonal wetlands and a heavy reliance on fisheries, faces significant challenges due to climate change. Erratic rainfall, prolonged flooding, and ecosystem degradation threaten traditional fishing practices and community livelihoods. This study investigates the potential of climate-resilient cage aquaculture as a sustainable, alternative income-generating solution for vulnerable Haor communities. An 80-day experiment was conducted in five villages of Sunamganj district, Sylhet division, Bangladesh, where tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fry were reared in climate-resilient floating cages at five stocking densities: T1 (800 fry/m3), T2 (900 fry/m3), T3 (1000 fry/m3), T4 (1100 fry/m3), and T5 (1200 fry/m3). Key environmental parameters, including temperature (28.12–29.55 °C), dissolved oxygen (4.61–6.55 mg/L), pH (7.53–7.72), and ammonia (0.05–0.76 mg/L), remained within optimal ranges across treatments. Growth performance, survival rate, and economic feasibility were evaluated with T5 yielding the highest gross production (51.77 ± 4.80 kg/m3) and net benefits (7500 ± 500 BDT/m3), achieving a benefit–cost ratio of 1:2.86. The survey findings revealed that a majority of fishers (82%) identified tilapia cage culture as a promising alternative livelihood, yet financial constraints and limited access to credit hinder adoption. Despite these socioeconomic challenges, our findings suggest that tilapia cage culture offers a viable income-generating solution, particularly during flood periods. The study highlights floating cage aquaculture as a climate-resilient strategy to mitigate climate impacts, enhance food security, and improve economic resilience in flood-prone and ecologically sensitive regions.

Abstract:
This study explores the potential of utilizing black bullhead (Ameiurus melas Rafinesque, 1820), an invasive freshwater species, as a stocking fish for aquaculture. Fish were mass-removed from Ponjavica Nature Park during two periods (2018–2019 and 2020–2021), with selected individuals reared to evaluate growth, survival, and meat quality. A total of 20,145 individuals were removed in the first period (168 reared), and 15,921 in the second (120 reared). Two rearing systems—cages and recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS)—and four feed types were tested. Results demonstrated the species’ adaptability to intensive aquaculture, with good growth, resilience to high-protein diets, and tolerance to high stocking densities. Cage systems generally showed superior growth performance, while RAS produced higher survival rates. Both systems achieved favorable feed conversion ratios. Meat analysis revealed optimal levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in RAS and cage-reared fish, enhancing the species’ nutritional value for human consumption. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of repurposing black bullhead as a sustainable aquaculture resource. This dual-purpose approach addresses ecological concerns while offering economic benefits through increased fish production and affordable, nutritious food availability. Further technological development is needed to optimize production systems for broader implementation.

Abstract Cage aquaculture is quickly expanding in the African Great Lakes Region, with the potential of boosting fish output and acting as a source of food security, poverty reduction, job and wealth creation. However, the proliferation of fish cages in Lake Victoria has come along with sporadic fish kills especially in the shallow zones of the lake in specifically the months of September to November each year and whose documentation is key for future references in case such occurrences reoccur. This paper indicates and discusses results from a rapid assessment of recent fish kills in the years 2021 and 2022 and sheds some light on the possible causes of the fish kills using standard methods and proposes mitigation measures moving forward. Low dissolved oxygen levels (≤ 4.0 mg L-1) instigated by increased eutrophication and upwelling are noted as the main causes of the fish kills. The application of good aquaculture practices for fish cage culture husbandry, application of guidelines as well as fast-tracking and enforcement of regulations will promote sustainable cage farming in such lacustrine systems.

The recently intensified aquaculture projects in Mwanza Gulf of Lake Victoria, Tanzania, have brought about incidences of increased pathogenic bacteria in the lake waters. In some instances, there have been reports of disease outbreaks in cage-farmed fish. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of selected pathogenic bacteria in Nile tilapia, (Oreochromis niloticus) cage-cultured along the gulf. A total of 250 fish from the cage farms and control site were sampled. Bacteria were isolated and identified from the samples through standard bacterial techniques. A total of 10 bacteria genera were identified, where, staphylococcus spp. had the highest prevalence with 34.5%, pseudomonas spp. at 25.9%, Streptococcus spp. at 10.5%, then Lactococuss spp. 15.5%. These results suggest intensive cage farming is likely the main risk factor for increased bacterial prevalence in the gulf. Henceforth, biosecurity measures must be intensified for sustainable healthy fish farming in cages along the Mwanza Gulf.

Cette thèse de doctorat porte sur la consommation des produits de la pêche et de l’aquaculture (PPA). Elle s’intéresse à mieux orienter les consommateurs vers des comportements de consommation plus durables, notamment au travers de l’utilisation des labels. Le marché français est utilisé comme cas d’étude. Cette thèse démontre notamment le caractère non-durable de la consommation française de PPA du point de vue environnemental et santé. Développer l'information et les connaissances des consommateurs envers cette filière est une étape essentielle pour l’adoption de comportements plus vertueux. Si les labels sont un outil pour guider les consommateurs dans leur choix de consommation, cette thèse démontre que les préférences pour ces démarches de labellisation sont aujourd’hui très hétérogènes. Les préférences exprimées sont principalement égoïstes, là où la demande éthique reste, elle, plus secondaire. Ce travail démontre aussi l’influence du caractère littoral sur les préférences exprimées, et sur les connaissances des consommateurs vis-à-vis du secteur des PPA. Finalement, ce travail démontre qu’associer deux labels sur un même produit (un écolabel et une allégation sûreté) n’est pas forcément valorisé par les consommateurs, et que la méthode de production (pêche vs aquaculture) influence les préférences des consommateurs pour ces labels<br>This dissertation focuses on the consumption of fishery and aquaculture products (FAPs). The aim of this work is to bettre understand how to guide consulers towards more sustainable consumption, in particular through the use of labels. The French market is used as a case study. This thesis demonstrates the unsustainable nature of French consumption of FAPs from an environmental and health point of view.Improving consumers' knowledge of the FAP sector is essential to guide them towards more virtuous behaviour. Although labels are a growing tool to inform and guide consumers in their consumption choices, this thesis shows that their preferences for these labelling approaches are currently very heterogeneous. Consumer’s preferences remain egoistic, while ethical demand remains secondary.Our work also shows the influence of coastal areas, on consumer’s and knowledge of the FAP sector. Finally, this work is interested in the association between an ecolabel and a safety claim. It shows that the combination of two labels on the same product is not necessarily valued by consumers and that the production method (wild vs. farmed) influences consumers' preferences for these two labels

Contemporary tourism planning recognises that an integrated and sustainable development approach includes the participation of local communities and residents. Success depends on community level capacity for innovation and leadership which are important variables for the creation and implementation of new ideas as part of the development process. The main aim of this research is to determine the capacity of stakeholders to support integration of tourism and aquaculture through development of a themed seafood tourism trail in the Nelson/Marlborough/Golden Bay region of New Zealand as a means to promote sustainable tourism. In 2005 the Marine Farming Association developed and published the “Top of the South Aquaculture and Seafood Trail” as a brochure for tourists to promote a positive image of aquaculture in the region. The Trail integrates local tourism providers, restaurants, accommodation, seafood retail, as well as harvesting and processing businesses (mussel farms) as part of a themed driving route linking several peripheral communities. Themed driving routes are an innovative means for providing destinations with the opportunity to bring tourists and associated economic outcomes to remote locations. There is strong economic dependence on aquaculture and tourism in the region with both industries generating a combined NZ$402 million annually in the Nelson Region alone. The research involved interviews with 22 local stakeholders regarding their perceptions about strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities associated with the Trail as part of a mixed method, case study approach. The results show that tourism and aquaculture in the region are well developed, but that there are weaknesses in networking and collaboration within and among industrial sectors. In addition, there are differing perceptions of the aquaculture and tourism industries. The role of the university has been important in building community capacity for research and strategic planning linked to the Trail.

<p>Abstract</p><p>Global aquaculture production has grown rapidly and is now among the fastest growing food production sectors in many countries.Introduced over the past 50 years or so,aquaculture in Africa has gone through different levels of growth. The desirability of aquaculture has been due to unreliable and unsustainable use of natural waters for capture fisheries. Due to the country’s concern, the government of Uganda has promoted aquaculture before for nutritional values. However, current policy initiatives that call for collective actions are geared towards commercial aquaculture development.</p><p>This work focuses on several aspects of aquaculture development in Uganda viz; past,present and future, potential, reared fish species, benefits, constraints and these are reflected in the policy and institutional arrangements with in the sector. This work has been undertaken with the aim of providing in detail the possible ways and means for sustainable utilization of aquaculture outcomes. Emphasis has been on how members of Kigoowa Catholic Women’s Development Association (KCWDA) have been empowered through group formation and aquaculture activities.</p><p>This work also analyses the dynamic gender relations that exist in resource ownership, access and use in Uganda and the implications thereof to aquaculture growth and expansion. Included are the possible options vulnerable people especially women undertake to sustain their livelihoods and those of their families and the community as a whole.</p><p>The information in this work is discussed in line with the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework. It therefore aims at providing an additional reference text on the subject and in the context of aquaculture. Details about certain concepts, policies and principles, nature of the sector and supportive literature on various issues are discussed.</p>

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Stellenbosch University was approached to assist with developing a techno-financial model for an urban freshwater aquaculture system in Philippi, Cape Town. Rapidly growing urban areas are predominantly becoming concentrated zones for malnutrition and poverty which require attention. Having enough food to eat does not mean that a family is food secure, the problem is usually associated with the lack of access to nutritious food. Fish is seen as an extremely healthy food which has the potential to effectively support food security and alleviate malnutrition. Aquaculture is identified as a largely underdeveloped sector in South Africa. It is currently undergoing rapid transition, being promoted by government as an industry that has potential to develop and create jobs, provide food security and grow the South African economy. Aquaponics- a method to integrate aquaculture with growing crops in a symbiotic system is a highly resource efficient closed-integrated food producing technology which has the potential to benefit from South African biosecurity regulations and climate-geographic characteristics. It is viewed as an effective food production alternative to deal with the challenges of declining high quality freshwater resources and available arable land. Training and capacity building is important for the development of aquaponic technology. This study explores and identifies the advantages aquaponic technology development would have in South Africa. The study has reviewed and assessed the fundamental principles for aquaculture production and management required for aquaponic systems development and management. A practical case study identifies the daily challenges and design parameters of aquaponic systems. The study is concluded with a techno-financial project proposal which shows how aquaponic systems can be planned.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Universiteit Stellenbosch was genader om 'n tegno-finansiele model to ontwikkel vir 'n stedelike akwakultuur plaas in Philippi, Kaapstad. The tempo waarteen die stedelike areas groei ontwikkel kommerwekkende uitdagings soos wanvoeding en armoede. In hierdie studie is vis geindentifiseer as 'n uiters voedsame aanvulling in die dieet van Suid Afrikaners. Akwakultuur is grootliks agter in terme van ontwikkeling. Dit word beskou as 'n sektor wat groot potensiaal inhou vir Suid Afrika se eknomiese groei, werkskepping en voedselsekuriteit. Akwaponika is die hersirkulerende integrasie van akwakultuur en hidroponika. Akwaponika hou groot voordele in terme van Suid Afrika se biosekuriteit regulasies and geografiese eienskappe en is 'n effektiewe manier om gebruikte akwakultuur te suiwer. In order to know the developing trends of Penghu’s aquaculture well, a sustainable development indicator system for aquaculture fishery of cobia cage is established based on the standard and spirit of Code 9 of the FAO on aquaculture development as well as by integrating the principles of fishery sustainable development indicator system. Lastly, the factor analysis is used to aggregate the indicators and results of the study are summarized as followed: 1.There is an established indicator system for fishery sustainable development internationally, but there isn’t one for aquaculture fishery sustainable development. abstract: This dissertation consists of three substantive chapters. The first substantive chapter investigates the premature harvesting problem in fisheries. Traditionally, yield-per-recruit analysis has been used to both assess and address the premature harvesting of fish stocks. However, the fact that fish size often affects the unit price suggests that this approach may be inadequate. In this chapter, I first synthesize the conventional yield-per-recruit analysis, and then extend this conventional approach by incorporating a size-price function for a revenue-per-recruit analysis. An optimal control approach is then used to derive a general bioeconomic solution for the optimal harvesting of a short-lived single cohort. This approach prevents economically premature harvesting and provides an "optimal economic yield". By comparing the yield- and revenue-per-recruit management strategies with the bioeconomic management strategy, I am able to test the economic efficiency of the conventional yield-per-recruit approach. This is illustrated with a numerical study. It shows that a bioeconomic strategy can significantly improve economic welfare compared with the yield-per-recruit strategy, particularly in the face of high natural mortality. Nevertheless, I find that harvesting on a revenue-per-recruit basis improves management policy and can generate a rent that is close to that from bioeconomic analysis, in particular when the natural mortality is relatively low. The second substantive chapter explores the conservation potential of a whale permit market under bounded economic uncertainty. Pro- and anti-whaling stakeholders are concerned about a recently proposed, "cap and trade" system for managing the global harvest of whales. Supporters argue that such an approach represents a novel solution to the current gridlock in international whale management. In addition to ethical objections, opponents worry that uncertainty about demand for whale-based products and the environmental benefits of conservation may make it difficult to predict the outcome of a whale share market. In this study, I use population and economic data for minke whales to examine the potential ecological consequences of the establishment of a whale permit market in Norway under bounded but significant economic uncertainty. A bioeconomic model is developed to evaluate the influence of economic uncertainties associated with pro- and anti- whaling demands on long-run steady state whale population size, harvest, and potential allocation. The results indicate that these economic uncertainties, in particular on the conservation demand side, play an important role in determining the steady state ecological outcome of a whale share market. A key finding is that while a whale share market has the potential to yield a wide range of allocations between conservation and whaling interests - outcomes in which conservationists effectively "buy out" the whaling industry seem most likely. The third substantive chapter examines the sea lice externality between farmed fisheries and wild fisheries. A central issue in the debate over the effect of fish farming on the wild fisheries is the nature of sea lice population dynamics and the wild juvenile mortality rate induced by sea lice infection. This study develops a bioeconomic model that integrates sea lice population dynamics, fish population dynamics, aquaculture and wild capture salmon fisheries in an optimal control framework. It provides a tool to investigate sea lice control policy from the standpoint both of private aquaculture producers and wild fishery managers by considering the sea lice infection externality between farmed and wild fisheries. Numerical results suggest that the state trajectory paths may be quite different under different management regimes, but approach the same steady state. AbstractUnderstanding appropriate governance arrangements for managing cage aquaculture systems in tropical lakes is essential, yet it is still overlooked by current studies. Here we discuss the lessons obtained from our interdisciplinary research (environmental–social science, ecology, and ecological economics) evaluating cage aquaculture management scenarios with the aim of facilitating sustainable cage aquaculture management in Lake Maninjau, Indonesia. The lessons we present are based on our analysis of why current management fails to achieve its goals of reduced cage aquaculture and improved water quality in the lake, despite the presence of formal regulations for reaching these goals. The importance of understanding the social, ecological, and economic dimensions in designing management actions is highlighted. We discuss how our research framework embraces methodological and epistemological differences between natural and social scientists to improve research integration and how it supports an adaptive research approach to studying (interventions in) complex ecosystems. We compare the relative advantages of our framework with well-established interdisciplinary conceptual and research frameworks revealing that it fulfills pertinent knowledge gaps through detailing the process of discipline integration, embracing epistemological pluralism, and explicitly including the quantification of ecosystem-services trade-offs, uncertainties, and risks in the decision-making process. Finally, we use the lessons from applying our framework to propose a more integrated management action plan in the lake. We expect that the lessons in this research can be widely applied to other cage aquaculture management case studies and contribute to the development of inland water ecosystem management in Indonesia and other Global South Countries.

AbstractCities are often seen as incubators for enterprise and innovation. However, in this urbanisation era, we seem to suffer from a lack of imagination on how to handle the many environmental problems associated with expanding cities. This is especially true in the case of the peri-urban interface (PUI), a geographical and conceptual landscape with which the city core often has a contentious relationship. In this chapter we look at the complex linkages between water and waste in the PUIs of two metropolitan cities: Bengaluru and Kolkata. We look at two water systems: Kannuru lake in Bengaluru and Kolkata’s wetlands. Kannuru is a freshwater lake that supported traditional livelihoods and subsistence use by local communities, while Kolkata’s peri-urban wetlands not only served as the city’s natural sewage treatment plant but also enabled agriculture and aquaculture. Urbanization has adversely impacted both these water systems. Kannuru lake is threatened by a landfill on its periphery, while sewage-based farming and fisheries in Kolkata’s wetlands have been impacted by changes in land use and composition of sewage. We unravel the complexity in the waste-water relationship, where waste is seen as a pollutant in one and as a nutrient in the other. We attempt to understand how we can re-envision waste and water linkages in the PUIs of expanding cities if India needs to move towards a sustainable future.

Abstract An innovative concept for a spar-type floating wind turbine that incorporates aquaculture cages not only meets the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) but also optimizes the use of offshore ocean space. The integration of floating offshore wind turbines with aquaculture has the potential to bring economic benefits to both industries. In this feasibility study, a 1/56 scale model of a 2MW Spar floating wind turbine is used and the target cage is silver salmon farming cage with dimensions of around 25 m in diameter and 9 m in depth. An experimental investigation was carried out in an experimental tank to examine the surge, heave and pitch dynamic responses of a spar-type floating offshore wind turbine with aquaculture cages. Under regular wave conditions, aquaculture cages of varying quantities and distances were positioned in front of the spar-type floating structure facing the wave direction, with accelerometers recording the spar-type floating structure’s surge, heave, and pitch motion. The study revealed that cages have a predominantly shadowing influence on the spar’s motion responses, compared to scenarios without cages. This effect is more pronounced when cages are situated nearer to the spar. When wave period was less than 1.0 second, the presence of the cages exerted a more pronounced influence on the movement of the spar. However, when the ratio of incident wavelength to cage diameter is close to 4, the motion responses of the Spar were significantly amplified under the influence of the aquaculture cages. Also, the impact of cages on the spar’s motion is relatively minor, varying from less than 10% for wave periods in excess of 1.2 seconds. Furthermore, the insignificant impact of the number of cages on spar motion attenuation was found but different setting methods will affect the wave field near the cages. The findings of this study possess significant practical and theoretical implications, as they furnish experimental evidence of the feasibility of integrating renewable energy enterprises with marine aquaculture ventures. In summary, the study determined that the deployment of net cages has an almost negligible impact on the oscillatory movements of spar-type floating platforms in most scenarios but reduces the motion amplitudes under specific wave periods. These discoveries provide crucial guidance for future offshore industry operations, indicating the necessity for further investigations to explore the interplays between floating structures and net cages under diverse conditions.

Satoumi is defined as the human use and management of coastal seas for high productivity while maintaining high biodiversity. Therefore, we proposed Satoumi approach to an open rias-type bay, Shizugawa Bay, in southern Sanriku Coast. We conducted scientific researches on mapping of coastal habitats and aquaculture facilities, hydrography, and material flows of nutrients, a minor element (Fe) and organic matters in the bay including those from the rivers and from the offshore waters. At the same time, Committee for Shizugawa Bay Management of Fishermen’s Cooperative of Miyagi Prefecture decided to decrease in aquaculture facilities for sustainable development of aquaculture. Based on these data, a physical-biological coupling model was used for calculating the number of aquaculture facilities that are suitable not only for yields but also for environments. These researches were established on strong collaborations among a fishermen’s’ cooperative, local governments and scientists. Results of this practice may help to realize sustainable coastal use of a rias-type bay.

Adopting a qualitative research approach, this study uses in-depth interviews and structured surveys with aquaculture farm owners and finance managers to examine investment planning, cost management, financial risk mitigation, and revenue optimization. This study integrates blockchain technology with Community-Supported Aquaculture (CSA) models to enhance transparency, financial stability, and operational efficiency. Blockchain improves product traceability and trust while smart contracts reduce intermediary costs and fraud risk. The CSA model supports shared investment and risk among local communities, fostering economic resilience for farmers and building beneficial relationships. Key support for these financial strategies comes from strategic partnerships with NGOs and government agencies, alongside regulatory compliance. Increased digital literacy and training have made these technologies more accessible. Continuous feedback from stakeholders and regular audits have facilitated ongoing improvements in financial strategies. This study highlights how these integrated financial mechanisms can transform the economic landscape of India’s aquaculture industry, offering sustainable advantages and serving as a replicable model for other regions and sectors. Finally, a framework combining blockchain and CSA models was presented to enhance financial strategies. Aquaculture is considered as a promising alternative to support the food demands of the everincreasing population. Currently, this sector faces several challenges such as using fishmeal, which is unsustainable and expensive. Therefore, it is necessary to identify an alternative feed component that is sustainable, cost-effective and can provide the essential nutrients required by the fish. In this context, microalgae are considered as a viable source of proteins, lipids, polysaccharides and highvalue products (HVPs) such as essential fatty acids, amino acids and vitamins. They play a vital role in the marine food chain and hence can be easily assimilated by the fish. The current research targeted the isolation, identification and characterization of novel marine microalgae from Qatar coastline to produce aquaculture feed supplement. As the climate poses a number of stress factors, such as high light intensities, temperatures and varying salinities, it is expected that novel microalgae with interesting metabolite profiles can be isolated from the environment for developing aquaculture sector in Qatar. Standard plating methods were used to isolate halophilic strains from field waters. PCR-sequencing was used to identify the novel microalgae, cyanobacteria and diatom isolates. Then a comparative analysis of the growth performance and metabolite content was performed to characterize these strains. Results evidenced that the cyanobacteria strain exhibited the highest biomass productivity of 51.4 mg L-1day-1 whereas the highest lipid content was observed in the novel diatom isolate ranging up to 28.62% and the highest amount of carotenoids was detected in the case of the microalgae. As in conclusion, a rich feed supplement blending the three isolates can be considered as an alternative to fishmeal. As a continuation of this research, the potential strains will be cultivated under various stress to increase their nutritional value.

Abstract Historically, subsea vehicles were controlled by communications through a tether, which presents several challenges including a limited range of motion, deployment and retrieval, cost and logistics, and environmental impact. These challenges inspired the development of a new generation of robotic solutions seeking to transform the industry into an economically efficient and environmentally sustainable model. Autonomous systems are increasingly providing economic and environmental value, such as intelligent robots with subsea applications in energy, defense, transportation, and aquaculture. Combined with AI capabilities, these robots can make subsea work more sustainable. The paper presents findings from a robotics company established in 2014 in Texas by NASA-bred entrepreneurs. Today, the company exports its robotic services and vehicles internationally. Findings offer a first-hand insight into the development of the interconnected, purpose-built ecosystem of surface and subsea robots. The technology leverages autonomous behaviors, acoustic communications, over-the-horizon networking, force/torque controllable electric manipulation, AI and machine learning, and multimodal 3D workspace sensors. It is inspired by NASA's command and control approach for robots in space. When this framework is applied to subsea systems, it removes the need for the tether through the autonomous capabilities onboard the robotic assets. Removing the tether has a cascading effect on support infrastructure and ultimately results in a reduction of on-site human support, thereby making operations safer. This new subsea robotics approach helps deliver an economically viable and environmentally sustainable model that significantly reduces operational footprints, operating costs, and GHG emissions, while improving offshore health, safety, and environmental exposure. New approaches to subsea technology could help develop complex autonomous ecosystems and serve as proof of concept for developing commercially viable technologies.
