Abstract:
With the considerable increase in both the consumption and demand of fossil fuels, carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere will increase correspondingly, causing global warming. However, carbon dioxide (C02) as a chemical has many advantages chemically; it is non-toxic, non-combustible, and can also be the starting material for the synthesis of fine chemicals. Among the possible processes which utilise carbon dioxide as a reagent, the synthesis of five-membered cyclic carbonates is very appealing, due to their vast potential for use as polar solvent, chemical intermediates and monomers in p

The current energy and environmental scenario in the world demands acute attention on sustainable repurposing of waste CO2 to high value hydrocarbons that not only addresses the CO2 mitigation problem, but also provides pathways for a closed loop synthetic carbon cycle. Difference in the scales of global CO2 emissions (about 40 Gtpa, 2017) and the carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) facilities (estimated cumulative 40 Mtpa, 2018) provokes active research on this topic. Fossils fuels are highly demanded in everyday life domestically or industrially. Fossil fuels are finite resources and they are rapidly depleting, as such alternative renewable feedstocks are sought to replace fossil fuels. Tall oil from paper processing and cashew nut shell liquid from the cashew nut industry are the two major renewable sources we studied, they are both waste byproducts, and have the potential to be converted into value-added materials. Tall oil from the paper industry mainly contained tall oil fatty acid, and under isomerising methoxycarbonylation with palladium catalyst, di

The solutions for mitigating climate change are diverse, ranging from innovative technological advancements to national and international policy mechanisms, aimed at behavioural changes. Although rudimentary, the use of wood biomass in energy generation – as an important short- to mid-term transitional fuel – has continued to grow, forming a key component of global mitigation strategies. This is particularly apparent in the UK, which relies upon large volumes of imported wood pellets to supplement home-grown feedstocks. As the UK’s forest resource is relatively small – when compared to the res

This work tackles a feasibility analysis on the electrocatalytic hydrogenation of palmitic acid as model compound for the interested hydrothermal liquefaction's (HTL) biocrude. It represents an upgrading study in order to produce high quality bio-oil or even biofuels. The aim was to confirm the possibility to attack this very unreactive molecule electrochemically, performing the target reaction of hydrogenation in lab-scale systems. Furthermore, also a qualitative analysis on the product and on the possible reaction scheme has been done. Due to the lack of literature, further study must be don

Improving the availability of secure energy supplies for the poorest rural communities is central to development efforts. World-wide, climate change concerns have led to growing interest in renewable sources, including modern forms of bioenergy. Drivers behind its adoption are diverse, location and scale dependent, and result in multi-level trade-offs. Although impacts are context-specific, bioenergy production and use have a wider impact on issues including deforestation, biodiversity loss, water shortages and food price increases. Modern biorefineries provide a framework for the sustainable conversion of biomass to biofuels and biochemicals. In light of the recalcitrance of lignin in woody feedstocks, the native shrub eastern leatherwood is proposed as a model hypolignified species. Xylem tissue of this low-lignin plant contained syringyl-rich lignin that was more easily hydrolysed and did not appear to be localised in the middle lamellae. Also, leatherwood cellulose was less crystalline and the xylan was highly acetylated. While viable low-lignin plants will enable the sustainable utilisation of woody feedstocks, high-
