Abstract:
The topic of this PhD Thesis is sustainable supply chain management with a special focus on the extension of sustainability to suppliers through the use of sustainable supplier development (SD) practices. The motivation of this PhD Thesis is grounded both on a managerial and a research need. On the one hand, companies such as Apple or Inditex claim to audit their suppliers in terms of environmental issues, provide training with respect to health and safety measures or work together with them in order to improve their sustainability performance. However, besides from the implementation of these practices, there are still incidents at the suppliers’ facilities. On the other hand, the literature on sustainable supply chain management has neglected the social dimension of sustainability, the role of suppliers’ performance and different contextual factors such as the country in which firms are located when studying the adoption and implementation of sustainable SD practices. These two issues suggest that there is a need to further study the role of sustainable SD practices in the extension of sustainability along the supply chain. In that sense, this PhD Thesis aims to both fulfill the abovementioned research gaps and provide a clearer understanding for managers with respect to the adoption and effectiveness of this set of practices. More specifically, this PhD Thesis aims to study (1) factors involved in the adoption of sustainable SD practices and (2) the effectiveness of these practices on firm’s performance. The PhD Thesis adopts a positivistic approach and uses survey methodology to test the influence of different variables on the adoption of sustainable SD practices as well as the relationship between the implementation of sustainable SD practices and performance. To test the abovementioned relationships, we employ two different databases. First, the International Manufacturing Strategy Survey (IMSS) which includes a sample of 931 manufacturing plants in 22 different countries. Second, a database develop din BuNeD Research Group that contains responses from 120 Spanish manufacturing firms. To analyze these two datasets we employ Ordinary Least Squares (OLS), Partial Least Squares (PLS) and multilevel regressions. The results of the PhD Thesis can be classified into (1) antecedents and (2) performance implications. In the study of sustainable SD practices antecedents our results suggest that countries in which firms are highly committed to sustainability there is more pressure to adopt practices that aim to extend sustainability to suppliers. In the study of performance implications three main results need to be highlighted. First, we have emphasized that in the study of SD practices effectiveness it is necessary to consider both the buying firm and the supplier performance since practices impact differently on different performance outcomes. Second, we have been able to highlight the key role of suppliers’ performance in the achievement of buying firm’s operational improvements. Third, we have also shown the role played by national culture in achieving a sustainable supply chain and emphasized its importance in the sustainable supply chain management literature.

Colesky, Yolanda. "Investigating sustainable supply chain practices within the luxury brand market." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/14917.

Full text
Abstract:
Luxury fashion brands seem to contradict sustainability. The values of sustainability are commonly associated with terms such as sharing, collaboration, austerity, and collective thinking. Luxury, however, is associated with excess, self-indulgence, delight and decadence (Kapferer & Bastien, 2012:360). Further paradoxes exist where the apparel of the luxury consumer is often manufactured by labourers in low wage-paying producing countries. High wastage is evident in the seasonality of the fashion industry. However, work opportunities are created by the fickleness of the fashion industry and the constant need to own the most current designs (Black, 2012:8). Owing to the high visibility of luxury fashion and the contractions between one -- on the one hand -- supplying income to families by way of employment and -- on the other hand -- not complying to sustainable international human resource practices, fashion brands are the focus of many non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that use the mass media to expose any social wrongdoing in the industry. Luxury fashion brands are constantly in the spotlight, as highlighted in articles posted by the Clean Clothes campaign, a custodian for employees in the global garment industries; Greenpeace; and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). An example of such practices was when Greenpeace reported in 2009 that shoe brands such as Timberland and Clarks were manufactured from leather sourced from the hides of cattle in illegally deforested areas in Brazil. This provided negative publicity for these luxury shoe brands as well as for the Brazilian government that was financing this project (Vurro, Russo & Perrini, 2009:609). The luxury fashion brand industry, as well as the consumers of luxury fashion labels, are accused -- often only for the sake of sensationalism -- of living in the lap of luxury whilst maintaining a supply chain that is riddled with unsustainable practices. The social structure and hierarchy of patrons within a community have, since the Middle Ages, been signalled by the clothes they wore. Social class was a birthright. Today, sporting luxury brands continues to serve as status symbols, but unlike mediaeval times, it is not limited to people with a high social standing at birth as one can work for status, and purchase the items because one deserves them. (Han, Nunes, & Drèze, 2010:15). In 2009, during the International Herald Tribune (IHT) Suzy Menkes, the fashion editor at The Herald, called for “luxury”’ and “fashion” to be separated. Luxury prides itself in its handcrafted garments manufactured by respected tradesmen in the industry. The outcome is that the manufactured goods are made to last a lifetime (Gibson, 2012:23).

Abstract:
This thesis is a critical evaluation of the theory and practice of Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM). It seeks to understand why SSCM theory has so little to say about environmental sustainability and to explore how SSCM practice is contributing towards the transition towards sustainable development. I conjecture that SSCM scholars have not engaged sufficiently with the broader sustainability literature and other constructions of sustainability, which has led to a lack of theory development within SSCM. The sustainability paradigms framework that forms the core of the thesis was developed in order to broaden the discussion around sustainability within SSCM. Specifically, it embraces the contested nature of the concept of sustainability and uses multiple sustainability paradigms to construct future directions for theory development. In order to put the concept of environmental sustainability at the centre of SSCM theory, the concept of ‘environmental effectiveness’ was developed which seeks to differentiate between environmentally sustainable strategies and those that merely seek to achieve reductions in unsustainability. In order to evaluate the practice of SSCM, a case study was conducted. The concept of ‘environmental effectiveness’ is operationalized through the use of non-perceptual measures related to carbon emissions and evaluates the extent to which SSCM practices contribute towards climate stabilization, a key sustainability objective. It is found that those SSCM practices that have been shown to improve ‘environmental performance’ within the extant SSCM literature did not deliver ‘environmentally effective performance’ within the case study. This raises the possibility that the literature has mistaken reductions in unsustainability for sustainability proper and that we may need to go back to basics. The findings are discussed with reference to the sustainability paradigms framework and multiple opportunities for theory development within SSCM are explored.

Abstract:
Sustainability become a new challenge for various dimensions, not only in academic area, but also has managerial perspectives. Consequently, to achieve competitive advantage, leading to sustainable performance, organisations need to explore what are the causes of the sustainable performance of the firm and how to manage them. Currently, natural environmental impact is more likely to be a critical problem for any organisation. Based on natural resource-based view of the firm (Hart, 1995), natural environmental issues can make a firm obtain new potential specific resources that are difficult to imitate by other organisations. Such resources can be created by supply chain integration (SCI) and also green supply chain management (GSCM) practices. However, there is inconclusive about the impact of SCI and GSCM practices on sustainable performance, in terms of evidence environmental and economic perspective. Therefore, the aim of this study is to understand the relationship between SCI, GSCM practices and sustainable performance, both direct and indirect effect of the relations. Base on survey method, this research used manufacturers in Thailand as a sample of the developing countries to collect data which come from multiple manufacturing industries. The research methodology used the Churchill (1979) framework for specifying and generating measured items. Exploratory factor analysis was employed to extract the main factors before using structural equation modeling (SEM) to test the hypotheses. Measurement model was firstly used to evaluate all measures and structural model was employed to test theoretical hypotheses. The empirical results of this research conclude that SCI has no direct positive impact on sustainable performance. Nevertheless, environmental and economic outcomes can be achieved by mediating effect of GSCM practices. Therefore, this research contributes to theoretical and practical view. In academic perspective, researchers can extend this finding to study on this issue further, while in managerial view, practitioners or managers can apply this result to their business strategies to improve their organisational performance.

Abstract:
Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM) is an evolving discipline, and incorporates the environmental and social performance dimensions of sustainability with the traditional measure of economic performance; current SSCM research indicates a skew towards economic performance and its interaction with environmental performance, while social performance is underrepresented (Pagell and Wu, 2009, Schaefer, 2004, Sharma and Ruud, 2003). The UK clothing industry represents a relevant research focus due to its supply chain complexity, and scale and scope of its environmental and social impacts; this thesis further recognises the tendency for academic research to focus on Large Enterprises (LE) (Curran and Blackburn, 2001) and investigates how SSCM is implemented in UK SME clothing supply chains to understand how and why they address economic, environmental and social performance and the potential contribution to developing the SSCM concept. An inductive case study methodology is employed and the research focuses on 4 UK clothing SMEs with primary data collection a series of semi-structured interviews, supported by observation, company documentation and archival data. Three theoretical lenses are applied and the findings indicate that SMEs manage their supply chains for sustainability in ways that strongly align with their specific characteristics and apply a greater emphasis on long-term, trust-based and mutually beneficial supplier relationships. A rich view of SSCM practice in SMEs is developed, which reflects the more intangible and human components of sustainability and supply chain relationships, and how these can be harnessed to achieve firm specific commitments. This thesis fulfils an identified need to study how sustainability is addressed in SME supply chains within a single industry; SSCM research to date has focused on large organisations and multiple industry perspectives. It contributes to knowledge in both the SSCM and SME research fields by identifying key gaps within the combined literature, critiquing sustainability models and developing a conceptual framework from the findings, which aims to embed social performance and offer a more integrated approach to SSCM in this context.

Triantafyllou, Maria K. "Sustainable forward and reverse logistics practices across competing supply chains." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2012. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/360331/.

Abstract:
In recent years, rapid changes in markets including outsourcing and globalisation of trade and production systems have led to a dramatic upsurge of interest in retail logistics with the aim to minimise operational and logistics costs, improve responsiveness and ameliorate customer services. The notable massification and commodification of production and consumption have created structural changes in traditional urban distribution systems with the establishment of peripheral transshipment and hub systems. In the light of sustainable development, green logistics and transparency on emissions have become a further requirement conforming to the times with a special focus being placed on the logistics of collecting, processing and recycling waste materials. This has increased the need to develop more efficient and effective city distribution plans and to establish optimised logistics models which will integrate the delivery of materials and the collection of waste and returns in order to reduce congestion, costs and emissions. To this end, this thesis aims to investigate opportunities to improve existing delivery mechanisms in a dedicated shopping centre in the UK in order to minimise freight activity and emissions, while optimising the reverse flow system for product returns and waste. Using a substantial database of logistics operations compiled for 92 businesses in Southampton’s shopping centre, the study aimed to understand the current opportunities to better utilise the existing back-load capacity and assess the potential logistical and environmental savings that could arise from the use of a peripheral consolidation centre for core goods and waste. Following statistical analysis on WestQuay managers, logistics providers, waste contractors and head offices responses it was found that the fill rates of delivery vehicles were considerably low and therefore there was a great potential to increase back-load rates and consolidation among loads of different businesses. In examining the waste and return flows it was found that there were already centrally managed collections of general waste and some recyclables and therefore further opportunities to reduce the logistics and environmental impact would lie into the consolidation of forward traffic and the back-loading of specific waste streams such as hazardous materials. The examination however of specific case study examples exhibited the variety in the characteristics and properties of hazardous wastes and the role of material-specific legislation on the way different waste streams should be managed and disposed of which limited the collaboration opportunities among businesses producing different waste streams. Instead the study highlighted the considerable transport, environmental and economic gains that could be achieved by individual businesses through the use of regional waste contractors and recycling sites. With regard to the consolidation of forward flows, the study reviewed a number of existing consolidation schemes and their characteristics to identify potential strengths, weaknesses and risks that would impact on the operation of a consolidation centre in the outskirts of Southampton. Various scenarios regarding the operation of the consolidation scheme were examined considering different take up combinations among different vehicle modes and loads. The scenario analysis suggested that the establishment of the consolidation centre could offer great opportunities to reduce the overall urban freight activity, while mitigating the environmental impacts and cutting down the total costs to businesses.

Abstract:
Problem – Companies are increasingly focusing on sustainability issues in response to internal and external pressure. Research on sustainable performance of focal companies is vast; however there is a lack of guidelines for managing sustainability in extended supply chains. Scholars claim a need for additional research on intra- and inter-organizational diffusion of best sustainable practices. Besides, the outcomes of sustainable sourcing practices are still uncertain. The gap between potential benefits of sustainable sourcing and actual performance is attributed to lack of capabilities, instruments, and efficient processes. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore existing sustainable sourcing practices which are used by leading multinational companies. Based on the obtained knowledge we aim to develop a framework that will suite as a guideline for enforcing sustainable sourcing practices. Method – The research has been conducted through the method of grounded theory, enabling the researchers to constructively interpret data from documentary primary data and semi-structured interviews. This approach was utilized in order to explore what are the most common practices of managing sustainable sourcing applied by the companies awarded as Industry leaders by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. Conclusion We found that a commonly accepted approach towards managing and enforcing sustainable sourcing is absent both in theoretical discourse and practice. However, the most frequently mentioned tools and approaches were defined. They include the adoption of suppliers’ code of conduct, establishment of dedicated sustainability departments, procurement personnel training, suppliers’ capability building, risk assessment and categorization of suppliers, IT platforms for information sharing, supplier self-assessment, audit, joint projects with suppliers, meetings and conferences, and suppliers’ scorecards. Finally, we developed a Sustainable Sourcing Enforcement framework which could serve as a guideline to enforce supplier’s commitment to act sustainably. The framework consists of five chronologically connected pillars: Objectives alignment, Commitment creation, Supplier selection, Ongoing development and Work with stakeholders.

Abstract:
The focus of this study is to explore the sustainability practices of SME suppliers as influenced by the stakeholders in the mining SC in Zambia. The study aims to provide the policymakers and senior managers of focal firms by developing a detailed framework that helps in examining the SME environment with regard to sustainability practices and formulate measures to increase their sustainability performance to decision making. This qualitative research used 50 semi-structured interviews in addressing the research objective. Interviews undertaking with cross section of stakeholders and using content analysis, the findings revealed that SMEs engage in sustainable practices when working with mining firms but disengage when working with non-mining firms. The findings further revealed the mechanisms employed by SC members in extending sustainability practices to direct and indirect suppliers (mainly informal SMEs) from focal firms. In so doing, the findings highlighted the role of first-tier suppliers as a bridge between the focal firms and sub-suppliers in disseminating sustainability practices. Besides revealing the drivers and barriers to sustainability, the research revealed the mechanisms for mitigating the barriers in order to increase the volume of SME suppliers adopting sustainable practices. This research has several contributions to both academia and practice. The main contribution to academia is a stakeholder framework, which provides a systematic mechanism of examining the sustainability phenomenon. Thus, presenting a theoretical approach for analysing and understanding sustainability practices of SMEs in a developing country context. The main contribution to practice is the production of tools that support practitioners to analyse and better comprehend the relationships in the SMEs sector and by identifying the key stakeholders that support the SMEs.

Abstract:
Today, supply chain is often complex with low transparency and traceability. This is causing environmental and social harm in lower tier levels of supply chains, which the focal firm will be held accountable for. In the light of this, focal firms are aspiring to become more sustainable, which includes sustainable practices in both primary and supportive activities. In order for organizations to achieve this, there is a need for higher transparency and traceability. An issue that can be solved by the implementation of blockchain technology. A blockchain allows transaction to be made without a third party which results in secured and verified information and thus increased transparency and traceability. Moreover, sustainability has moved to become imperative in organizations strategic decisions in recent years where Trippel Bottom Line is a common approach but current literature states that his approach often lack all dimensions in sustainability research. Making it clear that a broader view on sustainability is needed, which the UNs Global Goals has as it takes up different aspects including a more extensive view of the socioeconomic and environmental view of sustainability. The current literature is missing a more practical view of how the implementation of blockchain technology can help focal firms achieve the Global Goals. Thus, our study aims to answer the following research question: How can the application of blockchain technology in supply chain management help focal firms to achieve UNs Global Goals 12 and 13, by enabling transparency and traceability in supply chain networks? The purpose of this is study to understand how blockchain technology enables transparency and traceability in focal firms supply chains and how this can be applied when companies want to reach UNs Global Goals connected to responsible productionand consumption, and taking action against climate change, i.e., Global Goals 12 and 13.To answer our research question and fulfill the purpose, a qualitative study including eightsemi-structured interviews were conducted covering different themes related to the research question. Our findings shows that blockchain has several features that leads to transparency and traceability, namely, decentralized information sharing, secure information, verified information and enables better structures for communication within the supply chain. Thus, enables focal firms to act against climate change and promote sustainable consumption and production in theory supply chain. However, the findings show that to achieve the optimal outcome, this is dependent on the supply chain and its actors meeting certain criteria. These criterions include, the characteristics of the industry, the complexity of the supply chain, the costumers demand, the degree of adoption of the technology in the supply chain, the relationship between actors and supporting activities. This thesis theoretically contributes with further understating and a new logic of the connection between blockchain technology and sustainable supply chain management by showing that the transparency and traceability enabled by blockchain can help focal firms achieve sustainable practices by enabling decentralized, secure, and verified information. This facilitates a better structure for tracing carbon footprint and unethical production and working practices are made transparent. Further, the practical implication of this study is that the focal firms will get a better understanding and knowledge of the supply chain network and their production and consumption and making it easier to act against climate change. Lastly, the social implication of this study is that it facilitates a broader view on sustainability which includes the social dimension to a larger extent.

Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD (Management)
As organizations face stiff pressure from various stakeholders, management has had to move beyond the idea of shareholder wealth maximization and incorporate the environmental and social concerns from the various stakeholders. The study identifies how Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM) practices enable the firm to manage the social, environmental and economic Triple Bottom Line (TBL) for four key stakeholder groups - customers, suppliers, regulators and the community. The study adopted a case study design, focused on Safaricom, arguably Africa's most innovative cellular firm which has championed the M-pesa money transfer platform. The objectives were, first, to establish key attributes namely; power, legitimacy and urgency of selected stakeholders of Safaricom and the key determinants of their salience, second, to determine stakeholder expectations and how they hold Safaricom accountable; third, to identify the extent of Safaricom's influence and control over the selected stakeholders; and finally, to establish how and to what extent the firm manages stakeholder exposure through their SSCM practices and TBL measures. Data from semi-structured interviews with Safaricom management and the four key selected stakeholder groups, together with company and public documents, were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Stakeholder groups were selected to represent examples of low, moderate or high levels of salience and exposure. While all are considered important, the case reveals how Safaricom management prioritizes and addresses stakeholder needs according to their attributes. As each stakeholder group is heterogeneous, the case reveals how the firm manages each distinctively and adopts diverse SSCM practices, which are aligned with the firm's TBL measures. Moreover, stakeholder exposure has a moderating effect on the relationship between the firm's SSCM practices and the TBL measures.

The present work analyzes the impact of Corporate Environmental Ethics on the adoption of sustainable practices (environmental and social) and verifies the impact of these practices on sustainable performance in the Triple Bottom Line (in economic, environmental and social dimensions). An online questionnaire was sent to Portuguese manufacturing companies with more than 50 employees. The conceptual model was tested using structural equation models, in particular the PLS (Partial Least Squares). The results indicate that Corporate Environmental Ethics has an impact on all practices, whether social or environmental. The adoption of Green Information Systems has shown to have a positive impact on Sustainable Purchases, on Return on Investment throughout the product life cycle and on Eco-Design. These three practices have a positive impact on Environmental Performance and only Return on Investment throughout the product life cycle has a positive impact on Economic Performance. With regard to social practices, it was verified that only the advanced ones contribute positively to the Social Performance.

Abstract:
Sustainability in supply chains has received increasing attention in academic and business communities, in recent years. Academic research on sustainable supply chain management has begun about a decade ago and the literature indicates scarcity of studies on the social dimension of sustainability, with recommendation for the development of explicit frameworks to inform the implementation of social sustainability in supply chains. To assist filling this gap, based on a literature review it is proposed a framework to identify social sustainability in a focal company supply chain, encompassing internal operations, its suppliers, stakeholders, wholesalers, distributors and customers. It was attempted to propose indicators that are both relevant and simple, in order to enable framework practical application. The framework is applied in a sugar cane industry supply chain, which has been chosen due to its representativeness in the Brazilian economy, the significant employed workforce, literature records on severe labor conditions and human rights violations in the sector, as well as due to international interest in social sustainability in bioethanol production in Brazil. The indicators calculation confirmed the effectiveness of the framework to identify sustainable social practices in a supply chain. Besides this utility, the framework helped to diagnose social sustainability scarce aspects in a supply chain and it may assist to prioritize research, as well as to set goals for sustainable development.

Abstract:
This study was conducted with the objective to investigate the influence of strategic social and environmental responsibility management practices on corporative competitiveness. Specifically, the study aimed to understand the inter correlations among strategy management practices, social and environmental innovation and sustainable productive supply chain. Competitive performance was analyzed in an integrated way as well as divided in several aspects such as profitability, cost, sales, market participation and image. To conduct the study a literature research was performed about: i) strategy with social and environmental responsibility and competitiveness, certification, protocols and indices related to sustainability participation; and ii) sustainability aspects impact in corporate organization: stakeholder\'s management, social and environmental innovation management and management of sustainable productive supply chain. The field research of this study was conducted in two steps, first step was quantitative and second step was qualitative. The first quantitative step involved the analysis of 129 industries and the second qualitative step involved an exploratory approach with three case studies. The results indicated a considerable number of significative correlations among management practices studied and competitive performance, mainly on competitvive performance through company image. The most relevant practices evaluated were the initiatives related to actions implementation which integrate the sustainable practices (such as: inclusion of sustainable criteria in the development of new product and process, incorporation of existent supply chain elements in the innovation process, consumption reduction of water, energy and scrap generation reduction) and external relations (such as inclusion of social and environmental criterias to select suppliers and to define capital investment). In this way, the study brought significant contribution to better understand the management practices which can drive to companies competitiveness and bring the opportunity to conduct deep dive studies in some specific practices, as this a relative new topic of study in the literature.

The importance of sustainability or sustainable development is an important issue in today's business and social environment as a result of the unbridled degradation of the ecological environment. For an organization, the pursuit of economic goals alone is not a sound alternative in terms of long-term sustainability and profitability if it results in irreversible damage to the environment, failure to improve working conditions for its employees, and community in general. Thus, it has become fundamental that any organization behave in a socially and environmentally responsible manner, while simultaneously trying to achieve its economic goals. In this context, it was considered important to study the issue of Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM), in order to assess the extent of the introduction of SSCM practices in an organization, as well as the performance of the organization in all three dimensions of sustainability (economic, social and environmental) and non-financial performance as a result of compliance with SSCM practices. The results show that most SSCM practices are executed by organizations and have a significant positive influence when related to SSCM performance measures. It turns out that the surrounding community plays an important role not only in applying SSCM practices but also in performance measures, with a focus on Non-Financial Performance.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to understand how sustainable supply chain management processes are managed in practice given the variations in sustainability principles. The Global Supply Chain Forum's Supply Chain Management Framework was used to focus the study by examining how its elements (network structure, management component and business processes) interact with sustainability. There is evidence of a paradigm shift as evidenced in how the two concepts of sustainability and SCM merge. This justified the framework's elements being re-examined in the context of sustainability to understand how the elements change. However, there is no body of research that examines processes unique to SSCM. Furthermore, knowing how to manage these in practice, required an understanding of why and how different stakeholders behave. This needed a network view of multiple stakeholders, but limited research exists on end-to-end supply chain networks. Moreover, there is limited research on the management of diverse sustainability principles and the coordination of multiple stakeholders engaged in these. A single explanatory case study of a network and its nodes was selected as a method to explain how stakeholders behave through the proximity of network determinants. Two units of analysis (the network and the organisation) were used to examine organisational orientation and stakeholder network theory. This resulted in theoretical propositions and conceptual framework that explained a spectrum of sustainability principles, a model of sustainability business processes and phases of management, and archetypes of practice and complimentary typologies. The main contributions of the research were twofold: It mapped and modelled an end-to-end supply chain network and provided a SSCM framework. In doing so, it built theory by offering a model of key business processes in SSCM, taxonomic classes of SSCM practices, eco-centric theory, pre-competitive collaboration, concurrence, and leveraging interorganisational clusters to manipulate sustainability principles.

The objective of this paper is to evaluate the Sustainable Supply Chain Management (GCAS) practices adopted by Textile and Clothing (STV) companies, as well as to test the possible impact of adopting such practices has on the performance of these companies. The literature review allowed the identification of a survey instrument, originally written in the English language, which served as the basis for the accomplishment of the present study, after having undergone a process of cultural and linguistic adaptation. This survey was sent to 621 companies, of which 107 answered (17.2%). Construct validity was assessed through exploratory factor analysis, resulting in four constructs in GCAS practices - environmental management practices, supply chain integration, employee social inclusion practices, and community social inclusion practices - and four other constructs on GCAS performance - competitiveness, environmental performance, employee-centered social performance, and community-centered social performance. Both scales exhibit high reliability, with Cronbach's alpha value of 0.859 and 0.869, respectively. Through the establishment an "own" score for each of the constructs divided into quartiles (bad, insufficient, sufficient and good), it is found that TCS companies have been adopting SSCM practices at a sufficient level, and their performance in the various dimensions of sustainability is also sufficient. Using a Pearson correlation coefficient, a correlation analysis was performed between the SSCM practices and the SSCM performance, which concluded that there were significant positive correlations.

Abstract:
This thesis examines hotel food supply chain management practices and hotel food supply chains. The study is informed by qualitative data from 20 hotels of different characteristics. The results show three models of strategic sourcing strategy for affiliated hotels (chef-centred sourcing, centralised sourcing and flexible-centralised sourcing) and two models for independent hotel (chef-centred sourcing, and chef and owner sourcing strategy). Chef-centred sourcing can be a sourcing strategy for any type of hotel regardless of their affiliation; this sourcing strategy, however, is common among small group hotels, independent hotels and high-end hotel restaurants. Group hotels, however, are likely to employ a centralised-sourcing strategy with a degree of flexibility regarding supplier selection at property level. It was found that the higher the level of service, the more flexible the centralised sourcing strategy. These sourcing strategies have a strong, direct effect on how individual hotels source their food and therefore their food supply chain network structures. It is apparent that hotel food sourcing practice is complex and dynamic, and hotel business format is the main factor influencing individual hotel sourcing strategies. Hotel foodservice is characterised by low exploitation of information technology and manual-based supply chain activities with a high level of dependency on head chefs regarding supply chain performance. There is low level of implementation of supply chain initiatives among hotels in this study and the reason for this may be the products and production characteristics which differ from those in the retail sector. Although supplier cooperation and relationships between head chef and suppliers were found, there was an overall low level of collaboration between buyer and supplier. Consumer - ii - usage information was underutilised and under cultivated. Traditional arms-length buyer-seller relationships were commonly found in group hotels at both company level and property level. Overall hotel food SCM practice still displays traditional management characteristics and price-led decisions being apparent. An exception was found in high-end foodservice outlets and some outlets with chef sourcing strategies, where close long-term relationships between chefs and suppliers were found. The originality of this research lies in its attempt to fill a significant gap in hospitality management literature as well as to synthesise literature in the realms of supply chain management and hospitality management.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to find the relationship that exists between supply chain strategies and supply chain management practices at manufacturing companies. A sample of 195 firms in Colombia was used. Data analysis was performed in three phases. Initially, an exploratory factor analysis was carried out to identify the dimensions underlying each construct and derive, from the literature, a parsimonious configuration of supply chain management strategies and practices. Then, using a confirmatory factor analysis, internal consistency and degree of fit of the measurement models was evaluated. Finally, a structural equation model was built to test the formulated hypotheses (CMIN/DF=1.865, RMSEA=0.067, CFI=0.884, IFI=0.888, PNFI=0.623). Results in terms of correspondence were dissimilar, as a positive and statistically significant link was found between the constructs lean supply chain strategy and relationship with supply chain partners (H1a, y11=0.750, p<0.01), lean supply chain strategy and information management (H1b, y21=0.705, p<0.01) and between agile supply chain strategy and relationship with supply chain partners (H2a, y12=0.420, p<0.01). However, links between lean supply chain strategy and postponement (H1c, y31=-0.182, p>0.01), agile supply chain strategy and information management (H2b, y22=0.201, p>0.01) and agile supply chain strategy and postponement (H2c, y32=0.227, p>0.01) were not supported by empirical evidence. This allowed concluding that planning and formulating a specific supply chain strategy must involve a joint deployment of the practices appropriate for materializing it and that not all supply chain management practices support fulfilling the goals defined for the chain. For future work, including an analysis of the effect of variables such as demand uncertainty, company size or type of industry in the evaluated relationship is suggested. The importance of longitudinal measurements or evaluations with a qualitative approach to understand the phenomenon being studied is also mentioned.

Abstract:
Issue of Study: Sustainable supply chain management is increasingly viewed not as a cost, but as aprofit-building and value-adding direction. Within this policy, a dichotomy of social andenvironmental goals is pursued, with economic sustainability providing a foundation. Mineralsoriginating from within the Democratic Republic of Congo, a nation with a long history ofsufferance, are being exploited by violent and lawless criminals. Filtering supply chains of theseconflict minerals without damaging the economies of central Africa poses complicated challengesto stakeholders, raises transparency issues and questions the ethical sourcing resolve ofcompanies who operate in the developed world. Purpose: The purpose is to identify drivers and barriers and what possible influence companiesdownstream can have on incorporating conflict minerals into their supply chains. As a secondarydevelopment, Australian industry reaction to the Dodd-Frank Act and conflict minerals was alsoinvestigated. Method: This thesis is constructed upon literature studies and empirical research. It is exploratoryand comparative as well as qualitative in method by analysing several core case studies throughprimary interviewing and secondary data collection. Further industry experts were interviewed inan attempt to gain greater understanding of the complexities involved in incorporating supplychain sustainability into a highly decentralised supply chain. Network position was examined toidentify the degree of influence of leading companies in pushing sustainable policies overstakeholders. Chain of control concepts including transparency and codes of conduct were alsoexamined. Conclusions: Network centrality is a significant determinate of influence over implementing multi-tier sustainability initiatives, with low centrality being a significant restraint on incorporatingconflict minerals into SSCM. Australian industry being comprised mainly of peripheral actors withlow centrality has reacted slowly in comparison to industry based in the US and Europe.

Abstract:
Le chapitre 3 est le premier essai, Environmental Collaboration and Process Innovation in Supply Chain Management with Coordination.
This thesis articulates several important issues in sustainable operations and supply chain management not only to provide insights for enhancing the performance of firms but also to appeal to the enterprises to adopt appropriate means for a better environment of our society. The link from firm level to society level is that, to improve the green performance through better operations management efficiency in firms and supply chains, is an indispensable element to ameliorate the environment in our society. Taking China as an example. Since a few years ago (The Straitstimes, 2017; Stanway & Perry, 2018), the government started to spare no effort in resolving the air pollution problems. An important and useful means is to put strict regulations and monitoring the efforts of firms which will face serious fine if certain standards are not met by random inspection. Therefore, firms have to cooperate for the betterment of its profitability and, more importantly, the environmental impacts. Throughout the endeavor, despite the uncertain future situation, the air quality has gradually improved in China (Zheng, 2018). This thesis, in a more general setting, aims to provide important insights to firms so that they are not only able to meet the regulations but genuinely to make contributions to building a better environment for our future generations. Basically, our goal is to obtain deep understanding of the trade-offs with which companies are faced, and to model the problems for seeking possible solutions and helping firms/supply chains to enhance their performance from a theoretical point of view. Then, indirectly, the work will help firms to realize the importance of developing sustainable operations and supply chain management means on our society. The structure of the thesis is organized as follows. Chapter 2 introduces the thesis in French. Chapter 3 is the first essay, Environmental Collaboration and Process Innovation in Supply Chain Management with Coordination. Chapter 4 includes the contents of the second essay, Remanufacturing of Multi-Component Systems with Product Substitution , and the third essay, Joint Dynamic Pricing and Return Quality Strategies Under Demand Cannibalization, is introduced in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 gives the general concluding remarks of the three essays which is followed by the reference list and the appendices

Abstract:
Sustainable Supply Chain Management has become a topic of increased importance within the research domain. There is a greater need than ever before for companies to be able to assess and make informed decisions about their sustainability in the Supply Chains. There is a proliferation of research about its understanding and how to implement it in practice. This is mainly since sustainability has been assessed from various disciplines, organizational industries and organizational functional silos . There is a lack of comprehension, unified definition and appropriate implementation of Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM), leading to failure in decision making for sustainability implementation within supply chains. The proposed research identifies the research gaps through the novel application of Systematic Literature Network Analysis (SLNA) to SSCM literature. In doing so, methods including Systematic Literature Review (SLR), Citation Network Analysis (CNA) and Citation Network Mapping of literature have been used to identify definitions, KPIs, barriers and drivers of SSCM from the literature. Furthermore, a combination of methods from Text Mining and Content Analysis has been used to identify KPIs, barriers and drivers from sustainability reports of top global manufacturing companies, to better understand the practices of organizations for SSCM. The consolidation of the findings from literature and practice led to the development of an SSCM Performance Evaluation Framework built on multiple methods. A 4-level hierarchical model has been developed by classifying the identified KPIs into Economic, Environment and Social as well as considering the key decision areas including tactical, strategic and operational. Furthermore, a rigorous data collection process was conducted among supply chain and sustainability managers from top global manufacturing firms and leading academicians in the field, assessing the identified SSCM KPIs. The collected data were analyzed through novel application of hybrid Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) methods, which includes Values Focused Thinking (VFT), Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchical Process (FAHP), Fuzzy Technique of Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (FTOPSIS) and Total Interpretive Structural Modelling (TISM), for prioritizing and modelling of interdependencies, interactions and weightages among SSCM KPIs. The results obtained were subsequently used to develop a Decision Support System (DSS) that allows managers to evaluate their sustainability by identifying problem areas and yielding guidance on the KPIS and most important areas to focus on for SSCM implementation. The application of DSS has been demonstrated in the context of a case company. From a theoretical development point of view, a Tree perspective framework contributing to the ecological Theory of Sustainability has been proposed through the identification of the most influential organizational theories, and how they interrelate with each other. Overall, the proposed research provides a holistic perspective of SSCM that incorporates the various aspects of organizations, relevant organizational theories and perspectives of academics and practitioners together. The proposed DSS may act as a guiding tool for managers and practitioners for SSCM implementation in companies.

Abstract:
In a competitive business environment that requires strategy and innovation to improve the bottom line, supply chain management has been vital in creating competitive advantage. Increasingly, companies are also identifying sustainability as an opportunity to create competitive advantage. This project explores supply chains as a leverage point in advancing sustainable development. Corporations have developed different tools to interact with their suppliers on sustainability. Three of these devices were analyzed against a framework for strategic sustainable development to identify some of their strengths and weaknesses. A general set of criteria for sustainable supply chain management devices that employs a strategic, whole-systems perspective was then developed.

This exercise aimed at developing a sustainable supply chain strategy that was adopted by Exxaro Resources (Pty) Ltd. The focus of the approach was to assess the status of Exxaro’s supply chain sustainability compared to that of competitors operating in South Africa and the supply chain dimensions applicable to Exxaro’s scope (i.e. green inventory management, green warehouse/storage management, sustainable procurement or sourcing, sustainable supplier management and sustainable transport/business travelling). The strategy framework used includes a review of supply chain sustainability relating to Exxaro and the requirements thereof, depicting gaps, recommended actions or initiatives to close the gaps, an implementation approach and a schedule. The strategy sets out to distinguish Exxaro in supply chain sustainable development through the setting of guidelines, reporting standards and commitments to economic, labour, human rights as well as social and environmental well-being. The approach envisages collaborating with suppliers and Exxaro’s sustainable development department to continuously improve and embed positive sustainability practices within Exxaro’s supply chain processes. This research report highlights the progress already made with high-level sustainable supply chain management implementation by selected Exxaro competitors, relevant schools of thought and theories with the emphasis on bringing a link to opportunities for Exxaro to progress into supply chain sustainability. The relationship between supply chain practices, environmental performance, social and economic impacts was studied. The mining sector, with its history of negative impacts on societies and the environment, is continuously challenged by the increasing emphasis to demonstrate ethical, social and environmental performance and accountability throughout its business practices. The use of Exxaro as a practical case study limits the extent to which the recommended strategy can be generalised to any mining environment or company. Findings mentioned may be subject to further research by augmenting the scope to include mines operating outside of South Africa or additional mining entities and theories. The approach of the research included empirical studies in the form of in-depth interviews and questionnaire surveys on various internal stakeholders. Some information was obtained from the annual reports of Exxaro and a selected number of South African mining companies that are mining similar products to Exxaro. The data was analysed using statistical methods for social sciences with both qualitative and quantitative evaluation methods.

Do demographic factors play a role in the choice of supply chain risk management practices by supply chain professionals? Are there stronger relationships between certain demographic factors and supply chain risk management practices? Most supply chains today cuts across multiple countries, cultures, languages, income levels, and industries just to name a few. This means there are differences in supply chain risk management behaviors or attitudes. Is there a way to understand some of these differences better and will the management of global supply chains benefit from this knowledge?

Tsai, Ya-Ling. "Collaborative supply chain practices : Taiwanese companies in China." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/672.

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to investigate collaborative supply chain practices between Taiwanese and Chinese companies. To that end, we seek to address four main objectives: 1) to investigate and provide evidence of collaboration in supply chain management; 2) to evaluate supplier development within supply chain collaboration; 3) to investigate the internal processes of supply chain collaboration; and 4) to examine the outcomes of supply chain collaboration. To explore collaboration in supply chain management, we conduct an extensive review of the state of the art in collaborative supply chain, and we base our investigations and discussions on three real-life companies that practice collaborative supply chain methods in the target countries. Each study contains detailed information on each company, including the company’s background, history, culture, marketing strategy and their collaborative practices. We employ pattern-matching structures to analyse current collaborative practices, which allows us to determine the similarities and differences between theoretical collaboration and collaborative supply chain in practice. We have analysed both the literature and collaborative methodologies used by the companies in each case study, and we have identified a number of key findings that address each of the four research objectives. On one hand there is evidence to support the use of collaboration in supply chain management between Taiwanese and Chinese companies. However, to increase collaboration, we propose agreements between the countries and identification of key suppliers. On the other hand, dominant and powerful partners may prevent good collaboration within the supply chains. Therefore, in order to create an open minded and collaborative culture, we propose greater trust between Taiwanese buyers and Chinese and Taiwanese suppliers. The value in collaborative supply chain can then be realised, which has a positive impact on the business in terms of increasing competitive advantage and customer satisfaction. In addition, such collaborative practices provide the motivation for collaborative supply chain management between Taiwanese buyers and Chinese and Taiwanese suppliers.

Joradon, Worawat. "Investigating sustainable and resilient supply chain management in Thai manufacturing." Thesis, University of Hull, 2018. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:16590.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the combinatory relationship between sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) and supply chain resilience management (SRES) by developing a new concept of sustainable and resilient supply chain management (SResSCM). Supply chain management has been implemented by organizations for more than three decades and has been developed by integrating different but independent concepts, such as SSCM. Furthermore, organizations also pay attention to business continuity during periods of risk and disruption. Most organizations prepare alternative plans to maintain resilience and SRES was developed to fulfil this strategy. Both SSCM and SRES concepts are important for organizations in order to improve supply chain performance, and are linked in many ways. However, our knowledge is lacking on the combinatory relationship and effects of these two elements as little empirical research has previously been done. This thesis undertakes such empirical research by applying a three-phase, mixed-methods approach: semi-structured interviews to inductively confirm the combination of these two independent concepts, a survey of Thai manufacturers in the electronic/electrical and automotive sectors, and post-survey structured interviews to validate the survey findings. Thailand was chosen as the context for the study as it is a major manufacturing nation for western customers. The research found interconnections between SSCM and SRES from the practitioners’ perspectives which enabled the theoretical development of a ‘House of SResSCM’ framework that organizations around the world can apply. This thesis also contributes theoretically by providing measurement scales of SResSCM practices to assess and define current levels of adoption SSCM and SRES, which supply chain managers can implement in their organization to improve current practices. Finally, the Thai Government could use this study to support Thai manufacturing and provide direction for supply chains to become more sustainable and resilient.

Lu, Haiyan. "Investigation of sustainable supply chain management : a social network perspective." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2017. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/109830/.

Full text
Abstract:
Sustainable supply chain management (SCM) has become a heating topic for academic research as well as managerial practice. Implementing sustainable SCM requires firms and their supply chains simultaneously commit to economic, environmental and social practices. From a social network perspective, this study aims to investigate the influence of social ties on supply chain network relationship, and the impacts on sustainable SCM implementation. The research adopts a critical realism stance to guide methodological approach and research design, which drives the adoption of a mixed-method approach for data collection. A questionnaire survey yielded 476 usable responses, analysed through Structural Equation Modelling. Further, in-depth case studies of three supply chain networks with 16 companies were developed to elaborate the discussions and understand the drivers of sustainable SCM. The survey shows that social networks between buyers and suppliers positively increase the flow of supply chain capital, including financial, social and human capital flow, which then enhances implementation of environmental and social sustainability in supply chains. The case studies have confirmed the statistical results, and further developed the insights of the topic. Three supply chain network structure were included in this study– pooled, sequential and reciprocal networks. Research shows that the drivers for implementation of sustainable SCM is multifaceted. Social networks impact on dependency, transparency and distance among supply chain actors, as a result of influencing network economic and governance in the constructed structure. However, institutional pressure remains the major driver for sustainable practice, meanwhile, company strategy moderates the external drivers from social networks and institutional forces. The current study contributes to investigating sustainable SCM from social network perspective to investigate how social networks influence supply chain capital flow, supply chain structure and network structure. Further contributions come from showing the connection between formal institutional and personal ties, external factors and internal strategy. There is also a methodological contribution based upon the adoption of social network theory and mixed method approaches in sustainable SCM research.

Simangunsong, Eliot Sation. "Supply chain uncertainty : linking sources of uncertainty and management practices." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2010. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.556682.

Full text
Abstract:
Supply chain uncertainty is a key issue that affects firm competitiveness (1993; Yang et al., 2004); and, therefore, identifying the major sources of uncertainty within supply chains and developing strategies to manage them is an important challenge (Sabri & Beamon, 2000). There is an emerging literature on supply chain uncertainty but additional empirical research is required to further develop understanding of this phenomenon. This leads to an important research question to explore what sources of uncertainty can be identified in practice, what are the dimensions of these sources, and how can they be managed. To address this research question, this thesis has developed a theoretical model of supply chain uncertainty. Using this theoretical model to structure the investigation, an empirical study has been conducted in the food industry in Indonesia with twelve inter-related companies (4 suppliers, 4 iv manufacturers, and 4 retailers). Twenty three semi-structured interviews with thirty two senior representatives from the twelve companies have been conducted; interviews were audio and video recorded, and analysed using Atlas.ti. A comprehensive approach, which goes beyond previous studies, has been undertaken. Fourteen sources of uncertainty, including those internal to the firm (e.g., manufacturing process), internal to the supply chain (e.g., supplier) and external (e.g., environment) have been explored and twenty two management strategies for reducing or coping with the relevant dimensions have been identified Other research contributions are also identified such as the dynamic and multi dimensional process of managing sources of uncertainty. The findings of the thesis have implications for managers. For example, reducing uncertainty strategies such as collaboration are generally preferred over coping with uncertainty strategies but are difficult to implement when sources of uncertainty span beyond the boundaries of the firm. Future research should explore issues emerging from this study, such as ethical issues affecting supply chain uncertainty. Keywords: Supply chain uncertainty; uncertainty management; case study research.

Yardpaga, Therakorn. "Supply chain management practices in Thai SMEs : antecedents and outcomes." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/3110.

Abstract:
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) contribute significantly to both local and global economic development. They are a crucial business sector for all nations’ economies. In developed countries, SMEs typically account for 60 per cent of employment, and the figure is even higher in developing countries. In 2011, Thai SMEs employed 83.9 per cent of the Thai workforce. Thai SMEs, like all other firms, face the challenge of satisfying customers by offering quality products at low prices. Furthermore, it is generally argued that, in this increasingly aggressive business world, competition arises between integrated supply chains rather than at the firm level. Therefore, effective supply chain management (SCM) is a key driver of sustainable competitive advantage. However, Thai SMEs have issues in adopting supply chains in their organisations. They have doubts about whether SCM will improve firm performance. Therefore, this study aims to reveal whether SCM practices could help Thai SMEs to improve their performance, and if so which ones and how. To fill the gap in theoretical understanding, an initiation mixed method research design was specified using 20 semi-structured interviews and quantitative questionnaires distributed to 311 subjects. An SCM practices model with antecedents and consequences was identified using previous research. The measurements were evaluated, modified and analysed using several techniques, such as thematic analysis, regression and structural equation modelling. The study makes several notable findings. Firstly, the SMEs were found to implement SCM to reduce costs and improve productivity rather than to satisfy the customer. Secondly, the IT system and top management support were two key factors in helping SMEs to successfully apply SCM. Thirdly, the major barriers to SCM were employees’ lack of understanding and improper organisational design. Fourthly, firm size had no significant relationship to the level of firm performance. Finally, the firm’s performance and SCM practices were positively correlated. This work contributes to academia by expanding research into SCM practices in SMEs, of which there is a dearth in the literature (Quayle, 2003, Meehan and Muir, 2008), especially in the context of developing countries (Katunzi and Zheng, 2010). For practitioners, regarding SMEs in Thailand and other developing countries, this study confirms that SCM practice assists SMEs to gain higher performance. Furthermore, for policy makers, enhancing SCM practices in SMEs by developing SCM enablers such as IT systems and standard performance measurement and metrics, could help SMEs to achieve higher performance.

Abstract:
Dissertation to obtain PhD in Industrial Engineering
In order to increase partnership efficiency and truly meet the customers' demands, in today's business environment companies are operating in supply chains. Integration of supply chains facilitates minimizing diferent types of wastes and satisfying needs of the end customer. The first step toward supply chain integration is to understandand the customer values, and to reconfigure supply chain to support those values. The current research addresses supply chain integration through quantifying relations between supply chain practice and customer values. It employs Bayesian network and analytic network process as tools to quantify comparative relations among entities. The proposed approach starts with identifying trade-offs along customer values using Bayesian network. In parallel supply chain practices are comparatively analyzed through interviews with experts which is technically quantified using analytic network process. Thereafter, these two parallel phases join together to form a network of customer values and supply chain practices. The network is able to quantitatively identify relations among nodes; in addition, it can be used to plan scenarios and handle senstitivity analyses. This model is expected to be used by supply chain decision makers to have a quantitative measure for monitoring the influence of practices on preferences of the end customer. A survey and two case studies are discussed which go through aforementioned phases. The survey identifies and analyzes six customer values namely quality, cost, customization, time, know-how and respect for the environment. It makes input for the two cases which develop supply chain integration model for fashion and food industry. Supply chain practices are categorized into two groups of manufacturing and logistics practices. The two case studies include five manufacturing practices as cross functional operations, decrease work in process, implement standards, mixed production planning, and use recyclable materials as well as four logistics practices namely visibility to upstream /downstream inventories, information sharing with customer, implement logistics standards, and just in time.

Abstract:
Some business leaders in the manufacturing industry lack strategies to optimize green supply chain management strategies that increase profitability while reducing the carbon footprint. The lack of green supply chain strategies sub optimizes the use of resources business leaders use to meet their financial goals. The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore successful green supply chain strategies leaders used to increase profitability while reducing the carbon footprint. The participants were 7 business leaders in one manufacturing organization headquartered in Massachusetts who have sophisticated green supply chain strategies in place. The natural resource-based view theory was the conceptual framework for this study. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and organizational documents. Through thematic analysis, 3 key themes emerged: environmental management strategies, profit-increasing strategies, and governance strategies. The findings of this study might be of value to business leaders to reduce costs and create sustainable, competitive supply chains using responsible methods. The implications for social change include the potential for leaders to preserve finite natural resources for future generations and reduce the carbon footprint of manufacturing organizations.

In today's fast-paced and turbulent global economy, the topic of risk management has gained significant interest in the business and academic world. However, in practice, risk management remains rather underdeveloped and often dealt with in an informal and reactive manner. To this end, we propose a comprehensive approach to supply chain risk management based on academic and business research and apply it to a company to develop a case study. We survey the state-of-the-art of supply chain risk management by exploring both the qualitative and quantitative sides of risk management in this thesis. We study in detail the reasons why risk is often neglected in organizations, and learn from several conceptual frameworks that have been proposed in the literature. On the more quantitative side, we explore tools that have been used or could be used for supply chain risk management, such as Decision Analysis or Real Options. We apply our proposed supply chain risk management framework to the case company, focusing primarily on qualitative methods. Data for the analysis is collected by way of semistructured interviews with business executives and relevant company documents. The results are presented to shed light on the current risk management practices at the company by highlighting their strengths and potential weaknesses. The research also draws from fields outside the normal realm of supply chain risk management. A policy perspective is taken to isolate important drivers of risk that lie beyond the direct control of organizations, such as political uncertainty and regulations. The objective is to promote a more proactive outlook in organizations to anticipate and exploit the uncertainty in the business environment. Similarly, a market perspective is used to articulate a novel way to uncover information asymmetry in the domain of risk management. Instead of simply pointing to asymmetry as an undesirable fact of business world, we propose two approaches that could be used for developing creative solutions, specifically, prediction markets and credit derivatives concepts. In conclusion, we argue that evolutionary risk management processes accompanied by a radical shift in business risk culture are required to achieve competitive advantage through supply chain risk management.

Abstract:
Supply chain practitioners in developing economies, like Nigeria, experience challenges in implementing sustainable supply chain management practices. Poor sustainability implementation engenders the negative effects of supply chain operations on people, the environment, and business continuity. The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study was to explore and describe the experiences of supply chain practitioners in the consumer goods manufacturing industry in Nigeria about sustainable supply chain management based on the theoretical foundations of stakeholder and general systems theories. The focus of the research question was to examine the experiences of supply chain practitioners to understand the challenges in implementing sustainable supply chain management practices. Data were collected through semistructured face-to-face interview of 21 practitioners with a minimum 3 years of professional experience using the purposive sampling strategies of key knowledgeables and snowball to achieve saturation. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed guided by the Husserlian transcendental phenomenological approach for essences. The major finding was that the cost of implementing sustainability initiatives and poor government policies and regulations were the most significant barriers. Sustainability in the supply chain is still at its infancy in Nigeria, with room for improvement. The findings could contribute to positive social change as supply chain practitioners may better engage stakeholders and implement sustainability practices that minimize the negative effects of their supply chain operations on society and the environment.

Jamal, Noriza Mohd. "Management accounting and the implications of supply chain management practices : an empirical study." Thesis, University of Hull, 2011. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:5345.

Full text
Abstract:
There have been calls for more research into how changes in supply chain management practices (SCMPs) affect management accounting practices (MAPs) and in turn affect performance. While the linkages between SCMPs, MAPs and performance may seem intuitive, to date there has been limited empirical research testing these relationships. The objective of the research is therefore to test a number of hypotheses regarding the association between these variables and firm performance based on the contingency theory framework. Data were collected through a postal survey of senior accounting executives from the Consumer and Industrial Products Sectors under Malaysian publicly listed firms. The relationships between SCMPs, MAPs, supply chain performance (SCPERF) and overall firm performance (OPERF) were analysed using Partial Least Squares (PLS) path modelling in two conceptual models via PLS-Graph Beta Version 3. To supplement the questionnaire survey, semi-structured interviews were used to gather the experiences and views of selected companies as means to triangulate the research study. It was found that SCMPs are directly related to both MAPs and SCPERF, that MAPs are directly related to SCPERF, and that SCPERF was directly related to overall firm performance (OPERF). Although SCMPs and MAPs were not directly related to OPERF, they were related to OPERF indirectly. MAPs were categorized into stages of their evolution as postulated by the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC). The most sophisticated MAPs, however, have a positive direct and indirect association with OPERF. Supply chain performance (SCPERF) is found to be an important mediator linking SCMPs and MAPs to OPERF. The survey findings which are re-affirmed by the interviews are consistent with the contingency theory approach. This research adds to the existing body of research by developing a framework for linking a firm’s SCM practices to its management accounting practices, supply chain performance and overall firm performance. These findings provide management with strategically important insights that strategic supplier partnership, customer relationships, information management and internal supply chain activities are primary factors in SCM that will influence MAPs and supply chain performance. Managers can thus use MA information to effectively create an efficient SCM environment that will lead to improved SCPERF, which will in turn enhance overall firm performance. Areas where future research may prove fruitful are also discussed.

Manu, Emmanuel. "Supply chain management practices in construction and inter-organisational trust dynamics." Thesis, University of Wolverhampton, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2436/333133.

Full text
Abstract:
The poor trust culture in the construction sector is often considered an inhibiting factor to collaboration success in the United Kingdom (UK) despite reform efforts. Numerous reform initiatives tend to have focused on improvements in client and main contractor aspects of construction supply chain relationships, prompting claims that failure to integrate subcontractors, suppliers and consultants into collaborative arrangements remains a major shortcoming. Main contractor and subcontractor relationships therefore continue to be typified by such problems as late payments, charging fees to tender for work, award of contracts based on cheapest price rather than best value, negative margins and demand of retrospective discounts and cash rebates; all of which negatively impact on trust. Some main contractor organisations however, continue to embed supply chain management practices as a strategy for levering value from subcontractors. Such collaborative practices and their implications for inter-organisational trust development, and indeed overall project outcomes, have nonetheless received limited attention in construction management research, raising significant questions on the empirical basis for their implementation. This research was thus undertaken to investigate strategic supply chain management practices adopted by UK main contractors and its implications for inter-organisational trust development during projects. The study adopts a multiple case study design so as to unravel complex subtleties of inter-organisational trust development in the main contractors’ supply chain during projects. With four purposefully selected UK main contractor organisations that had implemented strategic supply chain management, data was gathered through a supply chain workshop, semi-structured interviews, passive observations and documentary analysis. From analysis of the data, it was revealed that strategic supply chain management practices of the main contractors were instrumental for trust manifestation across cognition, system and relational based dimensions. These practices served as constitutive elements of face-to-face interactions through which inter-organisational trust developed, whilst providing the institutional framework to which respective supply chain parties directed their psychological expectations. These findings highlight the importance of maintaining a core of subcontractors from which the main contractor can leverage long-term value irrespective of economic climate. This can be achieved by adequately prioritizing relationally trusted subcontractors for sensitive and high risk work packages whilst ensuring that strategic supply chain management principles can be used to engender impersonal (cognition and system-based) trust dimensions amongst other subcontractors used on a project. Accordingly, a supply chain management oriented framework for engendering inter-organisational trust during projects has been developed based on the study findings and evaluated through semi-structured interviews with selected target participants. This framework does not only provide a systematic and coherent approach for implementing or benchmarking strategic supply chain management in a main contractor’s organisation, but can also be used to prioritize and promote different trust dimensions and their associated behavioural consequences on projects, depending on perceived work package risks.

Abstract:
Some retail managers encounter challenges with efficiency and responsiveness in their attempts to gain and maintain a competitive advantage in the retail industry. Many retail managers are receptive to changes in global markets, technology, and customer demands. The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore the strategies that some retail managers used to motivate their sales associates to maintain a competitive advantage in the retail industry. Maintaining a competitive advantage increases profitability and customer satisfaction. Sustainable Supply Chain Management was the primary conceptual framework for this study. The purposive sample consisted of 4 retail managers from a mid-sized retail distribution organization in southeastern Georgia. Face-to-face interviews were recorded, transcribed, verified, and analyzed. Analysis in this qualitative single case study was based on the sustainable supply chain management framework. Four emergent themes were identified relating to essential strategies, ethical factors, risk factors, and the value of sustainable strategy toward stakeholders, suppliers, and customers. Implications for positive social change include retail managers’ improved ability to motivate their sales associates to maintain a competitive advantage, which will allow organizations to sustain their progress in the community and thereby contribute to the success and wellbeing of employees, families, communities, and the economy. Motivated and qualified employees tend to remain with their organizations, which is good for employees and their families, as well as the business, the community, and the economy.

Abstract:
Maintaining the current course of the global society is threatening the human civilization. The urgency of the situation, understood from empirical research, has caused many researchers to call for more prescriptive research as a necessary supplement, to better support decision making for sustainability. While policymakers need to direct and stimulate sustainable production and consumption through, e.g., legislation and market phenomena such as eco-labelling, business represents a significant proportion of the necessary resources, capabilities and mechanisms for the innovation needed for a transition towards sustainability. However, while businesses more and more realize the self-interest in working proactively with sustainability, there is a desire for better support for how to do this also from this end. Such support needs to consider a significant shift going on in business; that individual businesses tend to no longer compete as autonomous entities, but rather as supply chains. Thus, no company is more sustainable than its supply chain partners. Therefore, sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) as a business function, and sustainable procurement as a subset thereof, plays an increasingly pivotal role for sustainable development. The overall aim of this thesis is to contribute to sustainable development by studying how three phenomena; eco-labelling, procurement and supply chain management are related to each other and to a strategic sustainability perspective, and to suggest how these phenomena can be integrated with such a perspective to provide better support for decision making and innovation for sustainability. For this purpose, a framework for strategic sustainable development, including a definition of sustainability and generic guidelines to inform stepwise strategic plans towards sustainability, is used as a foundational methodology. The development of new approaches is also based on case studies with eco-labelling and sustainable public procurement bodies, businesses and public institutions. Information is collected by shadowing of criteria development and collaboration processes, interviews and literature studies. While the findings point to a clear rational for all of the phenomena and several strengths in existing schemes and practices, the findings also point to several shortcomings. Sustainability is not defined, and as a result, there is no foundation for strategic and proactive approaches. Furthermore, decisions are not based on considerations of all dimensions of sustainability, the whole life cycle of products, all relevant stakeholders and a long-term perspective. As a result, the full potential of these phenomena for contributing to sustainable development is not utilized. This thesis prescribes enhanced processes for eco-labelling, sustainable procurement and SSCM, and shows how these can support organisations in developing from reacting individually on known sustainability-related problems to acting proactively and collaboratively in supply chains, in a coordinated and economically viable way, on society’s remaining gap to the full scope of ecological and social sustainability.

The center of the world's economic gravity is slowly shifting towards these emerging economies. As per research performed by Goldman Sacs' the BRIC economies could become the four most dominant economies by 2050. As per their study China and India would become the dominant supplier of manufactured goods and services while Brazil and Russia would dominate in supply of raw materials. The BRIC economy today makes up about 25% of the land mass and has 40% of the world's population. As multinationals scramble to tap into these growing emerging markets, they have begun to acknowledge that supply chain management is an essential ingredient of a successful business strategy. Success stories of Wal-Mart, Dell and Toyota have brought in the realization that to compete and win in the market place a winning supply chain strategy is a must. This has resulted in corporations trying to benchmark their supply chain strategies against this best in class strategies. However, this kind of comparison does not always work since there are a multitude of differences between companies, industries and countries. The existing practice of developing products and services for the developed economy and then tailoring these products for other economies around the world will not suffice anymore. Companies must now learn how to develop products for countries like India, sometimes from scratch and then tailor them for other geographies. To compete in this space of rapid economic growth firms need to analyze, design and optimize their product portfolio for emerging markets. To develop these "no frills" products for emerging economies, the supply chain designed for developed countries isn't adequate to meet the unique challenges of an emerging economy with its underdeveloped infrastructure, technology and human capital resources. To be competitive corporations should re-evaluate their supply chain strategies to customize it for emerging market conditions and in many cases build it from scratch. This thesis examines the unique characteristics of supply chain by studying successful supply chain strategies employed by Indian firms and proposes frameworks and strategies to help companies innovate in their supply chain design. This thesis develops a generic framework to design effective supply chains for emerging economies by looking at five key elements or "Five Pillars" of supply chain. The five key elements were thoroughly evaluated to understand the key challenges in each pillar and develop effective "Customized Practices" in the context of an emerging economy. The five pillars which were evaluated were Demand and Supply Planning, Sourcing and Procurement, Operations, Transportation, Warehousing and distribution. The framework takes a holistic approach by aligning business strategies with operating principles to develop the customized practices. The framework was then validated by performing a deep dive analysis of the successful supply chain case of the Tata Nano small car. Analyzing the Tata Nano supply chain through the lens of this framework provided key insights into the supply chain challenges faced by firms operating in an emerging economy and the unique customized practices used by these firms to operate efficiently. Use of this framework will bring awareness of the supply chain challenges in emerging economies and the customized practices firms use to help guide organizations in designing and operating their supply chains.

Abstract:
Today we find ourselves in limbo between the need to reduce usage of the world’s dwindling supply of natural resources and a stubborn resistance to change our consumption habits. The continuing scarcity of resources, coupled with an increase in demand for them from a growing population, is the largest challenge facing earth and its people. While many individual citizens, politicians, press sources and businesses are ignoring the current situation, some have recognized the need for a green revolution. Leaders have attempted to enact a cultural change, organizing events and initiatives to garner the attention of those in position to make a change, and people have taken responsibility for their own actions in choosing more sustainable options in their everyday lives. Very small starts have been made in the colossal struggle against the changing climate, mounting environmental problems and expansive social issues, but these will not be sufficient for sustaining out future. Some entity with power must stand up to lead change, and that entity should be business. While business is largely responsible for much of the world’s environmental problems today, the ability of the free market system to create positive change through sustainable business practices is far more powerful than public polic
