Full textThis thesis articulates several important issues in sustainable operations and supply chain management not only to provide insights for enhancing the performance of firms but also to appeal to the enterprises to adopt appropriate means for a better environment of our society. The link from firm level to society level is that, to improve the green performance through better operations management efficiency in firms and supply chains, is an indispensable element to ameliorate the environment in our society. Taking China as an example. Since a few years ago (The Straitstimes, 2017; Stanway & Perry, 2018), the government started to spare no effort in resolving the air pollution problems. An important and useful means is to put strict regulations and monitoring the efforts of firms which will face serious fine if certain standards are not met by random inspection. Therefore, firms have to cooperate for the betterment of its profitability and, more importantly, the environmental impacts. Throughout the endeavor, despite the uncertain future situation, the air quality has gradually improved in China (Zheng, 2018). This thesis, in a more general setting, aims to provide important insights to firms so that they are not only able to meet the regulations but genuinely to make contributions to building a better environment for our future generations. Basically, our goal is to obtain deep understanding of the trade-offs with which companies are faced, and to model the problems for seeking possible solutions and helping firms/supply chains to enhance their performance from a theoretical point of view. Then, indirectly, the work will help firms to realize the importance of developing sustainable operations and supply chain management means on our society. The structure of the thesis is organized as follows. Chapter 2 introduces the thesis in French. Chapter 3 is the first essay, Environmental Collaboration and Process Innovation in Supply Chain Management with Coordination. Chapter 4 includes the contents of the second essay, Remanufacturing of Multi-Component Systems with Product Substitution , and the third essay, Joint Dynamic Pricing and Return Quality Strategies Under Demand Cannibalization, is introduced in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 gives the general concluding remarks of the three essays which is followed by the reference list and the appendices

Full textThis exercise aimed at developing a sustainable supply chain strategy that was adopted by Exxaro Resources (Pty) Ltd. The focus of the approach was to assess the status of Exxaro’s supply chain sustainability compared to that of competitors operating in South Africa and the supply chain dimensions applicable to Exxaro’s scope (i.e. green inventory management, green warehouse/storage management, sustainable procurement or sourcing, sustainable supplier management and sustainable transport/business travelling). The strategy framework used includes a review of supply chain sustainability relating to Exxaro and the requirements thereof, depicting gaps, recommended actions or initiatives to close the gaps, an implementation approach and a schedule. The strategy sets out to distinguish Exxaro in supply chain sustainable development through the setting of guidelines, reporting standards and commitments to economic, labour, human rights as well as social and environmental well-being. The approach envisages collaborating with suppliers and Exxaro’s sustainable development department to continuously improve and embed positive sustainability practices within Exxaro’s supply chain processes. This research report highlights the progress already made with high-level sustainable supply chain management implementation by selected Exxaro competitors, relevant schools of thought and theories with the emphasis on bringing a link to opportunities for Exxaro to progress into supply chain sustainability. The relationship between supply chain practices, environmental performance, social and economic impacts was studied. The mining sector, with its history of negative impacts on societies and the environment, is continuously challenged by the increasing emphasis to demonstrate ethical, social and environmental performance and accountability throughout its business practices. The use of Exxaro as a practical case study limits the extent to which the recommended strategy can be generalised to any mining environment or company. Findings mentioned may be subject to further research by augmenting the scope to include mines operating outside of South Africa or additional mining entities and theories. The approach of the research included empirical studies in the form of in-depth interviews and questionnaire surveys on various internal stakeholders. Some information was obtained from the annual reports of Exxaro and a selected number of South African mining companies that are mining similar products to Exxaro. The data was analysed using statistical methods for social sciences with both qualitative and quantitative evaluation methods.

Full textNegli ultimi anni, insieme alla diffusione di leggi e standard a tutela della qualità e sicurezza dei prodotti deperibili, il mercato si è confrontato con il crescente interessamento dei consumatori verso quelle caratteristiche dei prodotti come qualità, sicurezza e sostenibilità ambientale. Di conseguenza, mentre i diversi attori della filiera richiedono sempre maggiore visibilità sul viaggio dei prodotti, i ricercatori sono chiamati a sviluppare soluzioni logistiche per supportare i manager durante le attività giornaliere. La qualità e la sicurezza dei prodotti deperibili sono impattate sia dalle attività logistiche che dalle condizioni ambientali subite durante lo stoccaggio e il trasporto. L’implementazione della cold chain è il maggiore driver per tutelare tali aspetti, tuttavia la sua realizzazione è altamente impattante sia dal punto di vista energetico che ambientale. Le nuove tecnologie a supporto della tracciabilità rappresentano un’opportunità per le aziende al fine di implementare cold chain efficienti e allo stesso tempo rispondere alla maggiore domanda di informazioni da parte dei consumatori. Tuttavia, anche se la condivisione di informazioni tra gli attori supporta il raggiungimento di una maggiore integrazione e coordinamento nella filiera, l’apertura verso mercati sempre più globali e la diffidenza delle aziende a condividere informazioni strategiche con potenziali competitors, ostacola il flusso informativo lungo la supply chain. Inoltre, sempre più spesso le aziende scelgono di focalizzarsi sul loro core business e di affidare il trasporto e lo stoccaggio di prodotti ad aziende 3PL, che si trovano quindi a dover gestire numerosi clienti e una grande varietà di prodotti. Obiettivo di questa tesi è proporre modelli, metodi e strumenti innovativi per migliorare le performance lungo le filiere di prodotti deperibili. In aggiunta ad una maggiore efficienza, in questa tesi la definizione di ‘performance’ assume altre tre dimensioni: qualità, sicurezza e sostenibilità ambientale. La ricerca presentata risponde a due principali research questions che focalizzano l’attenzione sul miglioramento delle performance agendo sul trasporto e sullo stoccaggio. Per rispondere a tali domande, la ricerca presentata approfondisce alcuni argomenti, esplorati rispetto ad alcune leve. Il quadro metodologico utilizzato in questa tesi include quattro principali aspetti: la riduzione del livello di approssimazione dei dati, l’utilizzo di casi di studio forniti da aziende, l’uso della simulazione per studiare sistemi complessi attraverso i loro modelli, ed infine, il ruolo chiave della visualizzazione dei dati e dei risultati. All’inizio, la tesi dipinge lo stato dell’arte della pratica industriale corrente nell’ambito delle filiere di prodotti deperibili e identifica i principali trend nella ricerca lungo l’ultimo decennio. I successivi due capitoli illustrano l’attività di ricerca svolta. Il primo si focalizza su soluzioni logistiche per la gestione dei flussi di merce tra gli attori della filiera e il secondo si concentra sullo stoccaggio e in particolare sulle operations all’interno dei magazzini. I risultati ottenuti portano contributi alla ricerca, alla metodologia e supportano le aziende a livello tattico e strategico.

Full textEsta Tesis Doctoral se centra en la gestión de la sostenibilidad en la cadena de suministros, poniendo especial énfasis en la extensión de prácticas sostenibles a proveedores a través del uso de prácticas de desarrollo de proveedores. Dicha Tesis viene motivada por una necesidad tanto del mundo empresarial como del mundo académico. Por un lado, empresas como Apple o Inditex afirman auditar a sus proveedores en términos medioambientales, proporcionarles formación con respecto a temas de seguridad laboral y/o trabajar directamente con ellos para mejorar su rendimiento medioambiental. A pesar de la implementación de dichas prácticas, siguen ocurriendo incidentes en las instalaciones de los proveedores. Por otro lado, la literatura que versa sobre la gestión sostenible de la cadena de suministros ha ignorado, en el estudio de la adopción y eficacia de prácticas relacionadas con el desarrollo sostenible de proveedores, aspectos como la dimensión social de la sostenibilidad, el rendimiento de los proveedores y factores contextuales tales como el país dónde se localizan dichas empresas. Estos dos aspectos resaltan la necesidad de seguir estudiando el rol que las prácticas de desarrollo de proveedores tienen en la extensión de sostenibilidad a lo largo de la cadena de suministro. En este sentido, esta Tesis Doctoral pretende, cubrir los gaps existentes en la literatura, así como proporcionar a las empresas un mejor entendimiento sobre la adopción y eficacia de dichas prácticas. De manera más específica, esta Tesis Doctoral pretender estudiar: (1) factores relacionados con la adopción de prácticas de desarrollo de proveedores en términos de sostenibilidad y (2) la efectividad de dichas prácticas en el rendimiento de las empresas. Esta Tesis Doctoral adopta un enfoque positivista y usa encuestas para testear la influencia de una serie de variables en la adopción de prácticas de desarrollo sostenible de proveedores así como la relación entre la implementación de dichas prácticas y el rendimiento. Para testear dichas relaciones, se usan dos bases de datos. La primera, es la International Manufacturing Strategy Survey (IMSS), que incluye una muestra de 931 fábricas en 22 países diferentes. La segunda, es una base de datos desarrollada por el grupo de investigación BuNeD, que incluye respuesta de 120 empresas españolas. Para analizar estas dos bases de datos se utilizan diferentes técnicas estadísticas: regresión por el método de mínimos cuadrados, regresión de mínimos cuadrados parciales y regresión multinivel. Los resultados de la Tesis Doctoral se estructuran en dos partes: (1) antecedentes y (2) rendimiento. En el estudio de los antecedentes, los resultados sugieren que en países dónde las empresas están altamente comprometidas con la sostenibilidad, existe más presión para adoptar prácticas sostenibles de desarrollo de proveedores. En el estudio del rendimiento, existen tres resultados principales. En primer lugar, los resultados sugieren que, en el estudio de la eficacia de las prácticas sostenibles de desarrollo de proveedores, se debe distinguir entre rendimiento de la empresa compradora y rendimiento del proveedor. En segundo lugar, el rendimiento del proveedor tiene un papel clave en el rendimiento operacional de la empresa compradora. En tercer lugar, la dimensión cultural tiene una gran importancia en el estudio de la efectividad de las prácticas sostenibles de desarrollo de proveedores.
The topic of this PhD Thesis is sustainable supply chain management with a special focus on the extension of sustainability to suppliers through the use of sustainable supplier development (SD) practices. The motivation of this PhD Thesis is grounded both on a managerial and a research need. On the one hand, companies such as Apple or Inditex claim to audit their suppliers in terms of environmental issues, provide training with respect to health and safety measures or work together with them in order to improve their sustainability performance. However, besides from the implementation of these practices, there are still incidents at the suppliers’ facilities. On the other hand, the literature on sustainable supply chain management has neglected the social dimension of sustainability, the role of suppliers’ performance and different contextual factors such as the country in which firms are located when studying the adoption and implementation of sustainable SD practices. These two issues suggest that there is a need to further study the role of sustainable SD practices in the extension of sustainability along the supply chain. In that sense, this PhD Thesis aims to both fulfill the abovementioned research gaps and provide a clearer understanding for managers with respect to the adoption and effectiveness of this set of practices. More specifically, this PhD Thesis aims to study (1) factors involved in the adoption of sustainable SD practices and (2) the effectiveness of these practices on firm’s performance. The PhD Thesis adopts a positivistic approach and uses survey methodology to test the influence of different variables on the adoption of sustainable SD practices as well as the relationship between the implementation of sustainable SD practices and performance. To test the abovementioned relationships, we employ two different databases. First, the International Manufacturing Strategy Survey (IMSS) which includes a sample of 931 manufacturing plants in 22 different countries. Second, a database develop din BuNeD Research Group that contains responses from 120 Spanish manufacturing firms. To analyze these two datasets we employ Ordinary Least Squares (OLS), Partial Least Squares (PLS) and multilevel regressions. The results of the PhD Thesis can be classified into (1) antecedents and (2) performance implications. In the study of sustainable SD practices antecedents our results suggest that countries in which firms are highly committed to sustainability there is more pressure to adopt practices that aim to extend sustainability to suppliers. In the study of performance implications three main results need to be highlighted. First, we have emphasized that in the study of SD practices effectiveness it is necessary to consider both the buying firm and the supplier performance since practices impact differently on different performance outcomes. Second, we have been able to highlight the key role of suppliers’ performance in the achievement of buying firm’s operational improvements. Third, we have also shown the role played by national culture in achieving a sustainable supply chain and emphasized its importance in the sustainable supply chain management literature.

In today's fast-paced and turbulent global economy, the topic of risk management has gained significant interest in the business and academic world. However, in practice, risk management remains rather underdeveloped and often dealt with in an informal and reactive manner. To this end, we propose a comprehensive approach to supply chain risk management based on academic and business research and apply it to a company to develop a case study. We survey the state-of-the-art of supply chain risk management by exploring both the qualitative and quantitative sides of risk management in this thesis. We study in detail the reasons why risk is often neglected in organizations, and learn from several conceptual frameworks that have been proposed in the literature. On the more quantitative side, we explore tools that have been used or could be used for supply chain risk management, such as Decision Analysis or Real Options. We apply our proposed supply chain risk management framework to the case company, focusing primarily on qualitative methods. Data for the analysis is collected by way of semistructured interviews with business executives and relevant company documents. The results are presented to shed light on the current risk management practices at the company by highlighting their strengths and potential weaknesses. The research also draws from fields outside the normal realm of supply chain risk management. A policy perspective is taken to isolate important drivers of risk that lie beyond the direct control of organizations, such as political uncertainty and regulations. The objective is to promote a more proactive outlook in organizations to anticipate and exploit the uncertainty in the business environment. Similarly, a market perspective is used to articulate a novel way to uncover information asymmetry in the domain of risk management. Instead of simply pointing to asymmetry as an undesirable fact of business world, we propose two approaches that could be used for developing creative solutions, specifically, prediction markets and credit derivatives concepts. In conclusion, we argue that evolutionary risk management processes accompanied by a radical shift in business risk culture are required to achieve competitive advantage through supply chain risk management.

Full textGrowing concerns over the environmental and social impacts related to the production of clothing and textiles have created a need for more discussion about supply chain practices. Currently, there are no guidelines or strategies for addressing sustainable supply chains in the apparel industry that minimize environmental impacts and uphold socially responsible practices. This exploratory case study traces an apparel supply chain, with a focus on cotton, in South Africa that is under a development strategy to create a sustainable supply chain from farm to retail. In-depth interviews were conducted across the supply chain, including cotton farmers, cotton gins, a cotton yarn manufacturer, a textile mill, an apparel manufacturer, and a retailer. The purpose of the study was to gain an understanding of the business decisions at each node of the supply chain that influence the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainability by applying the triple top line model (McDonough & Braungart, 2002). This study identifies strengths and weaknesses in sustainable practices that adhere to the triple top line model within each node of the supply chain. Results found economic factors were drivers for good social and environmental practices, with the latter being the smallest segment of the three. The study makes recommendations for improving practices at each node of the supply chain and recommendations for strategies for developing sustainable apparel supply chains.

Full textLos servicios sostenibles son aquellos que restringen el consumo de recursos y generación de residuos a un nivel aceptable considerando las existencias y las velocidades de recuperación de los recursos así como la capacidad de soporte de La Tierra. Asimismo, hacen una contribución positiva a la satisfacción de las necesidades humanas y proveen de valor económico a la empresa. La selección de procesos apropiados para la provisión de un dado servicio es el tópico principal de esta tesis.
Esta tesis presenta un marco consistente para el soporte a la decisión hacia alternativas sostenibles. El marco abarca un grupo de métodos y herramientas aplicables al soporte de la decisión en cuestiones de diseño, actualización, y operación considerando criterios de sostenibilidad en términos económicos y medioambientales. Se ha enfatizado la simulación de procesos, el modelado matemático y otros métodos de estadística multivariable. El marco está materializado en un procedimiento de uso que posee cuatro pasos que imitan los de otros métodos actualmente utilizados y un set integrado de herramientas. Las herramientas usadas son en todos los casos modelos matemáticos que permiten una representación precisa de la realidad que simulan. El problema multiobjetivo resultante es resuelto usando una estrategia que permite restringir la mejor solución de compromiso. Una multitud de casos de estudio industriales muestra la forma de aplicación del marco en diferentes escenarios.
El marco se ha aplicado a casos de estudios que requieren de soporte a la decisión. El caso de diseño de procesos continuos se ha incluido tratando tres casos. El primero está relacionado con la selección de opciones de tratamiento de aguas residuales en una planta de producción de ácido fosfórico considerando incertidumbre en variables operativas. Otro caso considera las decisiones relacionadas al uso de diferentes materias primas en una usina eléctrica con tecnología de gasificación. El último caso considera la optimización de las variables operativas en el diseño de un sistema de destilación reactiva. Todos los casos son modelados rigurosamente usando noveles herramientas de simulación y modelado en conjunto con otras desarrolladas para el análisis de los aspectos económicos y medioambientales de la sostenibilidad.
Posteriormente, se ha estudiado el problema operacional de la selección de la planificación de producción. En este caso se ha puesto atención especial a la selección de métricas apropiadas considerando aspectos económicos, medioambientales y de eficiencia que reflejen las características secuenciales del problema. El modelo propuesto se ha construido usando herramientas de programación matemática y la producción de fibras acrílicas es la aplicación considerada.
Finalmente el marco se ha aplicado al diseño y planificación de una cadena de producción. En este caso se modelan decisiones de planificación a medio y largo plazo y se las aplica a la producción de anhídrido maleico en Europa del Oeste. Dadas las características del problema se han estudiado diferentes instrumentos económicos asociados al medio ambiente, como la venta de permisos de emisión y subsidios a la producción. Esto permite mostrar las capacidades del marco para el estudio de políticas gubernamentales.
Los casos de estudio muestran las diferentes compensaciones que aparecen en varios niveles de decisión. Asimismo el marco provee con un enfoque robusto para la trazabilidad y capacidad de verificación de las diferentes hipótesis de modelado, lo cual refuerza el proceso de toma de decisiones.
Industry is often seen as a source of environmental degradation and resource depletion, however it is a vital part of societal development and wealth creation. Moreover, industrial systems cause and determine flows of materials and energy through the society. Sustainable development is associated to all the former issues, by encompassing them altogether under the same umbrella.
Sustainable services are those, that restrain resource consumption and waste generation to an acceptable level, considering Earth's existing capital, rates of replenishment and carrying capacity, make a positive contribution to the satisfaction of human needs, and provide enduring economic value to the business enterprise. The selection of appropriate processes for providing a given sustainable service is the main topic of this thesis.
This thesis presents a consistent framework for decision support towards sustainable design. It encompasses a set of methods and tools applicable to decision aid in process design, retrofit and operation considering sustainability criteria in terms of economic and environmental issues. In this sense special consideration is given to process simulation, general modelling programs and other multivariate statistical methods, as well as their supporting associated tools. The framework is materialised as a procedure for its application in four steps, which mimics other current applied methods; and a set of tools which are integrated. One of the framework aims is the consideration of the uncertainty associated to parameters and values. The tools, which in all cases are mathematical models, allow for an accurate representation of the reality they simulate. In the case of alternatives generation problem, the resultant multiobjective optimisation problem is solved by an strategy that permits narrowing-in the best solution compromise. A multitude of industrial case studies teaches the way to use the framework in different scenarios.
The framework is applied to different case studies which require decision aid. The case of continuous process design is first addressed along with three different studies. The first one is related to the selection of waste water treatment options for a phosphoric acid plant considering uncertainty in operating variables, another analysis considers the decisions related to raw material management in an integrated gasification combined cycle power plant, while the last one addresses the design of a reactive distillation system considering optimisation of operating variables. All case studies are modelled rigorously using state of the art commercial simulation tools in conjunction with other tools developed for the assessment of sustainability concerns, mainly economic and environmental issues.
The operational problem of selecting appropriate schedules, for the production of different products, is addressed next. In this case, special attention is given to the selection of appropriate metrics, considering economic, efficiency and environmental concerns that reflect the sequence dependence features of this problem. The model proposed is built using mathematical programming and the production of acrylic fibres is the application considered.
Finally, the framework is applied to the design and retrofit of the whole chemical supply chain. Mid- to long-term planning decisions are modelled in this case, which studies a maleic anhydride production supply chain in Western Europe. Due to the problem nature, economic-environmental instruments such as emission trading and price subsidies are studied showing the viability of the presented approach for policy analysis.
The case studies and the proposed framework show that different trade offs appear at different decision making levels. Moreover, the framework provides with a robust approach for traceability and verifiability of different modelling hypothesis which strengthens the decision making process.

Unnecessary transports are a negative environmental aspect and means negative environmental impact. Although transports affect the environment, there is little research on the relationship between transport and Green supply chain management. The purpose of the study is therefore to design a strategy for achieving Green supply chain management and reduce unnecessary transport with a focus on uncertainty, variability and transparency. Method- To enable the answering of purpose, a case study conducted with the help of literature and a case company. Results- The case company is negatively affected by uncertainty, variety, and also by a lack of transparency in the supply chain. Unnecessary transportations through recalls are created because of quality defects. This creates obstacles for a supply chain management strategy to be more effective. A systematic approach by Plan-Do-Check-Act can help the case company to create a stable basis and achieve green supply chain management. It is necessary to conduct Plan-Do-Check-Act with good communication in order to create transparency, prevent uncertainty and variation. Green supply chain management can be achieved through a combination of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and Lean. These parts should be conducted with PDCA, which can reduce unnecessary transportation.

Full textThe present thesis delved into the current and future interactions within the European Steel Industry and of it with the environment it is a part of, with the main objective of supporting decision- and policy-making efforts oriented towards sustainability and circularity, helping to shape the future of steel in the European Community. The thesis used the European Steel Industry as a case study to explore the potential benefits of integrating Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) into System Dynamics (SD) under the scopes of Circular Economy and Industrial Ecology. A model representative of the European Steel Industry was built modularly in Stella Architect, following ILCD and ISO guidelines and standards for LCA. Throughout 4 of the 5 articles developed for the present thesis, 21 simulation runs were performed on the aforementioned model: 12 on identifying potential constraints and benefits of End-of-Life policies; 5 assessing the advantages and disadvantages of different Supply Chain Integration (SCI) strategies along European steel supply chains; and 4 addressing the interactions between biophysical and economic dynamics in the steel market. An additional article was developed using the methodologies of Circles of Sustainability and Sustainable Urban Metabolism to appraise the challenges and contributions of steel as part of servitization initiatives in urban environments. Overall results indicated that integrating LCA into SD was not only feasible and capable of reproducing results, trends and behaviors from previous scientific studies, but also of contributing to both methodologies in different levels. This approach has potential to interest policy-makers who seek more granularity within the European Steel Industry as well as decision-makers searching for a broader understanding of their operation’s dynamics beyond the gates, notably regarding raw material scarcity, resource self-sufficiency, and resource ownership retention. From the results of each article it was observed that, (a) pushing for recycling and reuse could generate interesting medium- to long-term results for circularity, transitioning away from fossil fuels and developing a whole new market around end-of-life services; (b) different SCI approaches can be environmentally and strategically promising; (c) six key biophysical variables can distinctively affect spot prices, future prices, EBITDA margins, capacity utilization, dividend payouts, and costs of steelmaking; and (d) servitization can provide significant benefits to sustainable cities, while also being able to substantially alter the supply-side dynamics of steelmaking, highlighting how important it is for steelmakers to pay close attention to the service-providing initiatives that may concern their clients and products

Full textThe effective introduction of sustainability in business requires actions that go beyond organizational boundaries, encompassing the inter-organizational environment. Thus, companies are no longer considered individually; they are analyzed according to their supply chains, composed by organizations that contribute to the achievement of the same performance goals. A supply chain is considered more sustainable when it enters the economic, environmental and social dimensions in their operations, strategies and decision making, possessing good levels of performance on these dimensions. The incorporation of sustainability practices in supply chain can be analyzed in a continuous, formed by two extremes: reactive and proactive response. The sustainable proactivity can be defined as the adoption of actions, performed voluntarily by companies, in order to improve the environmental and social performance beyond legal requirements. A proactive company states its concern and commitment to society and the natural environment in which it operates. Given these considerations, this research premise is: the proactive approach of companies towards sustainable practices encourages better integration with the partners in their supply chain, which contributes to the incorporation of sustainability in the supply chain. In this context, this research aims to analyze the contribution of proactive company integration with its partners to the introduction of sustainability in their supply chain. Therefore, a qualitative research was performed, composed by two phases (exploratory and descriptive), involving a proactive focal company and its supply chain partners. It is emphasized that, because of the complexity and the extent of supply chains, we chose to analyze the upstream chain, i.e., focal company (Mercur S.A.) and supplier firms (LKC Transportes; PAMF Indústria e Comércio de Confecções; Caeté Embalagens; and Artecola Química). The employees of these companies were interviewed. First, it was analyzed the proactivity of sustainable practices of Mercur. The results indicate that Mercur can be considered a proactive company, due to the full adoption of 37 actions for sustainability in the core business of the organization and the partial implementation of six practices. Secondly, it was investigated the integration and the relationship of a proactive company with its supply chain partners. It was found that the interviewees consider that the supply chain is in process of a complete integration. Thus, it can be observed that there are different levels of integration in the supply chain, involving the Mercur and their suppliers. Thirdly, it was examined the existence of sustainable practices throughout the supply chain. These practices were described considering five categories of analysis (strategic orientation, supply chain continuity, collaboration, risk management, and proactivity). Incentives were identified for the design and the implementation of sustainable practices by all supply chain members, contributing to a more sustainable development. From this perspective, given the results, it is assumed that the research premise was confirmed, since the proactive sustainable practices Mercur encourages greater integration with partners in the supply chain, contributing to the sustainable supply chain. However, the integration of Mercur with partners can also encourage that proactive practices in favor of sustainability be incorporated in the supply chain.

This research has divided into three phases; the first phase is to clarify a sustainability measurement framework in supply chain. This framework allows decision makers identifying the sustainability measures based on their interesting area in sustainability criteria. There are eight categories of sustainability criteria in this framework which are financial, non-financial, raw material, natural resources, energy, human health and safety, human resources development, and ethical issues. The sustainability criteria in this framework have developed based on the concept of human needs and the triple bottom line concept. It have been justified by analyze with standard, guide line, and regulation involving sustainable development perspective. Moreover, this proposed framework enhances an engagement level of elements in supply chain as an important perspective to identifying the sustainability measures. After developing the conceptual framework for measuring sustainability performance, this thesis has proposed an approach to construct the performance measurement model. This work enhances the valuable of adopting the value chain model (Porter, 2008) and the process based approach (Chan and Qi, 2003) for constructing the sustainability measures model. This leads to an implementation of the proposed framework allowing decision makers to measures sustainability performance in any process or activity in the company and its supply chain. In order to implementing the proposed conceptual framework and the model construction method in practical situation, this thesis has selected the supplier performance evaluation problem for measuring sustainability performance.The second phase of this work is the development of the tool for measuring sustainability performance by focusing on supplier evaluation problem. The measurement tool is developed based on multi-criteria decision method. This model is not used for making a decision such as selecting the best supplier but it is a multicriteria decision aiding which help manager to establish supplier improvement program based on the results. The measurement tool is developed based on a fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP) approach. This thesis has proposed three FAHP methods by modified the extent analysis method (Method-I), modified the normalization approach (Method-II), and employed the weakest t-norm arithmetic (Method-III) for determining the fuzzy priority weight. These methods are easy to adopt in real-life problem in industry. The method-I is less complexity than method-II and method-III respectively but the method-I also obtains the larger fuzzy spread than method-II and method-III respectively. It is depends on the decision makers to select the proposed FAHP among these three methods for implementing in their situations. The results from supplier’s performance help manager for setting the direction to improve supplier’s sustainability by using the normalization rating from measurement model.The third phase of this thesis is an implementation of the proposed framework and proposed FAHP in the case study company in Thai electronics industry. The case study company aims to evaluate sustainability performance of their suppliers in order to manage and improve supplier’s performance. The sustainability performance measurement model consists of 10 indicators and 25 sustainability measures based on three dimensions (economic, environmental, and social). It is found that the importance weight of economic, environmental, and social dimension are 50.87%, 34.86%, and 15.14% respectively. It means that an economic performance is still the most important and the social performance is the less important of supplier’s evaluation

Full textBackground and problematisation During the 1990’s many companies moved their production to remote low cost countries to reduce their production costs and create an increased competitive advantage. Research has now shown that this trend is reversing and companies are now starting to move their production to their home country or a close by low cost country due to the revelation that the total cost did not increase. Placing the production in or near the home country can result in a lower total cost, reduced risks and an increase of value to the consumer. The production location choice can also strongly be influenced by the companies’ sustainability work. The majority of research is focused around the comparison of Sweden and a low cost country in Asia but very little research has been done comparing Sweden and Europe. Purpose and method The purpose of the study is to compare the strategies inshoring and nearshoring by investigating Swedish sustainable micro companies’ choice of production location. To compare the strategies we will evaluate these through the factors cost, risk and value. The empirical material will be collected through semi-structured interviews with companies producing in either Sweden or Portugal. The result will then be analysed and connected to the theoretical framework around Supply Chain Management, sustainability and the three factors above to answer our research questions. Result and conclusion After the empirical data had been analysed we saw that the companies more or less shared there searchers’ views on that a production in Sweden in many ways was more cost effective, less prone to risks and increased the value to the consumers due to the brand being perceived as more sustainable. Also the design of the product played a big part in the choice of production location, something the literature did not bring up. Our conclusion was that none of the sourcing strategies were considered the best, but the size of the company, product design and the choice of material affected which production country that was deemed the most suitable. The ramp up phase is always the most risky part of any project, especially with a product material the company and its partners have very little experience with. One result of this lack of experience is frequent engineering changes to address design corrections and improvements. High levels of change create uncertainty within both the supply chain and the engineering change management systems. Just as a supplier may not be able to meet production requirements, elements of the change process may not be sufficiently flexible to account for the level of change the project experiences during production ramp up. A study of Bus Solution Systems' (BSS) Super Hotel Coach (SHC) program change management system will show that unsuitable change management system processes can cause downstream delays just as unsuitable supply chain strategy can cause the same. This thesis details a situation where the SHC program's Materials Management Department (MMD) was having difficulty with visibility into the change management system. As a result of the situation, SHC MMD did not have the ability to order parts on time. The effect was that there were an increased number of parts needed for manufacturing jobs but were not in stock, and sometimes yet to be ordered. The ultimate result of this problem, and the multitude of other problems impacting the SHC not investigated in this thesis, was a bus program that was 2 years behind schedule in early 2009.

This thesis aims to correct the SHC MMD engineering change visibility issue by examining the current state of the engineering change process through a shortage part case study and by applying supply chain management strategy principles to extract part ordering information from the SHC General Engineering Change Process earlier. This thesis also proposes a long term systematic solution that would help prevent shortages from occurring in the future. The intent of the recommendation is to reduce the chance of shortage occurrences so as to prevent further delay of the SHC program.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Sustainability is a key requirement for business success and is often regarded a competitive advantage if strategically managed. Sustainability-mature organisations look to their value chains where the retailer-supplier relationship becomes critical in embedding sustainability. With this in mind, it has been established that a large South African retailer, Woolworths, has limited insight into the level of engagement in terms of sustainability with its key food suppliers, and no knowledge of the effectiveness of current tools used in enhancing their supply chain sustainability. This poses a problem, as it hinders the full implementation of Woolworth’s sustainability strategy across their value chain. In response to this, a study was undertaken to establish the level of engagement in terms of sustainability and obtain supplier feedback on the effectiveness of current tools used to enhance Woolworth’s supply chain sustainability. To facilitate this, the United Nations’ Global Compact and the Supply Chain Sustainability Guideline were utilised. Secondary research was conducted by means of a literature review covering the theoretical concepts of corporate social responsibility, sustainability, supply chain sustainability and retailer-supplier collaboration. The qualitative and exploratory nature of the study necessitated a case study research design, while the technique of purposive sampling was used to select the sample of three of Woolworths’ food suppliers. Data was collected by means of semi-structured interviews facilitated by an interview guide, and data analysis was conducted with Atlas.ti software. It was determined that the current engagement around sustainability between Woolworths and their suppliers is still at a basic and broad level, with a strong environmental focus. Additionally, monitoring and support of sustainability initiatives seems to be lacking. Managerial implications emphasise the importance of an integrated sustainability approach driven by the retailer and a strong focus on collaboration and communication with suppliers around ongoing sustainability challenges and opportunities. The United Nations Global Compact Supplier Engagement Continuum was utilised as a framework to map the current level of engagement and was amended for use in the South African context. Future research agendas suggest replica studies in other industries, and that the amended continuum should be tested and further refined for the South African context. In conclusion, specific propositions were formulated to aid future research.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Volhoubaarheid is ‘n sleutel vereiste vir besigheidsukses en word dikwels gesien as ‘n mededingende voordeel indien dit strategies bestuur word. Volhoubaar-volwasse organisasies fokus op hul waardekettings waar die kleinhandelaar-verskaffer verhouding krities is vir die implementering van volhoubaarheid. Met bogenoemde in gedagte, is dit bevind dat ‘n groot Suid-Afrikaanse kleinhandelaar, Woolworths, beperkte insig het aangaande die vlak van samewerking in terme van volhoubaarheid met sleutel voedselverskaffers. Verder is daar ook geen kennis oor die effektiwiteit van huidige tegnieke wat gebruik word om volhoubaarheid in hul waardeketting te bevorder nie. Dit skep ‘n probleem aangesien dit die effektiewe implementering van Woolworths se volhoubaarheidstrategie in hul waardeketting verhinder. Dus is ‘n studie onderneem om die vlak van betrokkenheid in terme van volhoubaarheid te bepaal, sowel as om terugvoer vanaf verskaffers in te samel aangaande die effektiwiteit van huidige volhoubaarheidsinisiatiewe. Om dit te fasiliteer was daar van die United Nations Global Compact en die Supply Chain Sustainability Guideline gebruik gemaak. Full textThe Humanitarian supply Chain is a key element to enhance a performing response to humanitarian crisis. Because of the internal and external pressure, Humanitarian Organizations (HO) has done efforts during last decades to improve the crisis response in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. However, the performance is challenged by the increasing gap between funding and needs. The main donors ask for more transparency and accountability. Moreover, the pressure from the international community is pushing HO to integrate Sustainability challenges on a near future. Is in this context, and field research results, that the difficulties to consider sustainability on HSC decision-making. The lack of Decision Support Systems and a sustainability culture specific to the HSC have been identified as break to improve the planning of sustainable humanitarian operations. This research work seeks to introduce the sustainability notion to the management of the HSC. The approach followed is the development of a decision support system based on performance, to plan the HSC operations. Three research directions have been explored: (a) How to gather an exhaustive knowledge of a HSC, for both field research and development of DSS? The proposed contribution is a Meta-Model of the HSC, for field research porpoise and for developing adequate Decision Support Systems. (b) What sustainability means in HSC context? Based on a literature review and field research, a framework is established to define the HSC sustainable performance. (c) How to make sustainable decisions during humanitarian response? This contribution is based on an Operational Research Algorithm, which permits to integrate the sustainable performance on decision making with an interactive approach. The thesis illustrates the three contributions with use cases based on the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC)
