Abstract:
According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), sustainable tourism is defined: "as tourism that fully takes into account current and future economic, social and environmental effects, addressing the needs of visitors, sectors, the environment and destinations". It is well known that halal tourism occupies an increasingly important place in the overall tourist traffic, while on the other hand, increasing attention in the world is paid to sustainable tourism. In this paper, we analyze the development of halal tourism and sustainable tourism, their similarities and differences, ie does sustainable tourism also mean halal tourism. Halal tourism is a tourist offer primarily intended for muslims, in which at least two conditions must be met, namely the possibility of performing prayers and halal food.

Abstract:
In recent decades, the impositions of environmental sustainability have resulted in severe challenges for the tourism sector. It is not enough to make tourist destinations greener and more circular. It is necessary to encourage pro-sustainable behavior among tourists. This research aims to explore the role of available reliable information on the sustainability of destinations in relation to the pro-sustainable habits of tourists and to investigate changes in tourist behavior related to travel and tourism. In addition, it aims to assess the influence of tourists’ pro-sustainable habits on changes in their behavior regarding travel and tourism. For this, a sample of 25,711 residents in Europe-27 were considered, collected through the Flash Eurobarometer 499 database (attitudes of Europeans against tourism, autumn 2021) by GESIS—Leibniz Institute for Social Sciences. A quantitative analysis was performed using the Partial Least Square method. The results reveal that the available reliable information on the sustainability of destinations positively influences the adoption of pro-sustainable travel and tourism habits and changes in tourist behavior, guiding them towards pro-sustainable travel and tourism preferences. Furthermore, pro-sustainable travel and tourism habits positively influence pro-sustainable changes in tourist behavior. This study provides accurate and accessible information on the sustainability of destinations, promoting pro-sustainable travel and tourism habits and encouraging the adoption of conscious behavior during travel to work towards a more sustainable tourism industry, which is responsible in regard to the environment and to local communities.

Abstract:
This study examines the present initiatives being undertaken in Nepal to promote sustainable tourism. The long-term positive impacts of tourism on the environment, society, and economy are to be optimized through management strategies that align with sustainable tourism development. Its main objective is to protect and enhance local communities to maintain the environment and cultural heritage. Tourism is a broad term that includes a variety of subjects, things, and aspects related to social, economic, and environmental activities (Perles & Ivars, 2018). Sustainability is a fashionable trend in creation and operation, even in the travel and tourism industry. Disagreement exists about the many interpretations of sustainability and its applicability to the travel industry. This raises the question of whether tourism can be included in the definition of sustainable development. Because of limited resources and rising environmental consciousness, this study emphasizes the importance of sustainable tourist development for the benefit of coming generations. This article presents sustainable tourism's concept, definition, and historical background. In addition, the author critically assesses Poland's sustainable tourism growth, highlighting the need for reform in the present system. Presenting the socio-cultural, environmental, and economic aspects influencing sustainable tourism is the next task following the goals.

Abstract:
In the recent years, the rapid growth of the tourism industry has risen to prominence as a global concern. Tourism empowers communities and uplifts the economy. However, it poses social and environmental challenges, which in turn draws attention to tourism patterns. Sustainable tourism promises protection of the environment and the social-cultural elements of any given destination. Hence, this study aims to understand the complex relationship between sustainability policy, management, and tourist behavior. Thus, we examined the relationships between sustainable tourism policy and destination management, destination social responsibility, and tourist value orientation with sustainable tourism development. We recruited participants at managerial level coming from 163 Malaysian companies and conducted a cross-sectional quantitative study, using partial least square structural equation modeling. We propose that sustainable tourism policy and destination management and destination social responsibility significantly impact sustainable tourism development. Moreover, destination social responsibility partially mediates the relationship between sustainable tourism policy destination management and sustainable tourism development.

Abstract:
This article aims to evaluate tourism competition between countries by examining world tourism indices. Tourism indices are widely used tools to measure and compare the performance of the tourism industry. This study will discuss the Global Tourism Competitiveness Index, Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index and other important indices, explain the calculation methods of the indices and analyze the results. Sustainability, the economic contribution of tourism and future trends are also among the focuses of this article. This study will help us understand how tourism indices affect tourism competition between countries and predict future tourism trends. Major tourist destinations such as Turkey and the USA are making various efforts to promote sustainable tourism practices. This is an important step aimed at growing tourism sectors sustainably in the future. Countries such as Georgia, Azerbaijan and Iran have the potential to offer different experiences for tourists with their cultural diversity and unique traditions. These countries have growth opportunities in the field of cultural tourism. Sustainable tourism practices are important for future growth and success for major tourist destinations. A major tourist destination like the USA aims to make its tourism industry more environmentally friendly by increasing its efforts on sustainability. Iran may not have been able to fully utilize its tourism potential due to regional and international political factors. Security concerns and political instability may limit tourist interest in Iran. As a result, these five countries have different tourism potentials and each offers unique attractions. Turkey, the USA and others aim to grow their tourism sectors in the future by promoting sustainable tourism practices. The competition between the countries examined reflects the development of tourism indices and the diversity of tourist destinations.

Abstract:
In recent years, the problem of inadequate concretization of the paradigm of sustainable tourism, its low operationalization and instrumentalization in the context of tourist systems management at various levels has become widely recognized. The publication focuses on the systematization of the perspectives and effects of sustainable tourism management – with a major purpose of demonstrating their extremely wide practical importance in developing strategic managerial solutions in the tourism industry. The article summarizes more than fifty basic specific perspectives (problems) of sustainable tourism, which it is expedient to systematize and structure in the context of strategic management of tourist systems. As a first discussion option, this publication proposes a classification-grouping of sustainable tourism management applications, structured around four groups of perspectives: 1. macro- and meso-economic, 2. institutional, 3. socio-cultural and environmental, 4. microeconomic perspectives. As an important addition, the study suggests a generalization of the main effects in the field of sustainable tourism, which should be taken into account in the development of tourist systems. Further, some explanations are given regarding the specifics of some of the central and most problematic managerial aspects of sustainable tourism in the context of the Russian tourism and hospitality industry development. The publication also touches upon the issues of further incorporation of sustainable tourism's managerial applications into strategic decision-making, outlining the main promising scientific and practical areas. In addition, the article argues that through the sustainability paradigm unique advantages and high competitiveness of tourism systems can be achieved and ensured in the most accurate and precise way.

Abstract:
AbstractIntroduction. City tourism is one of the most frequently chosen forms of tourism consisting of many motives for doing it. On the modern tourist market, there are many negative phenomena that significantly affect the functioning of urban tourist destinations but primarily have an impact on the decisions of potential tourists about choosing cities as a tourist destination. These phenomena pose a threat to the development of both cities and tourism. They are conditioned by endogenous factors, which result from the functioning of the city, and exogenous ones, i.e. those related to socio-economic relations of the city with the environment, including tourist traffic. Cities, as a destination or transit tourist destination, are characterized by high concentration of tourist traffic; hence, the negative phenomena often affect urban tourist space with great intensity. The aim of the study is to present the author’s concept of sustainable urban tourism policy assumptions. After presenting the concept of sustainable urban tourism development policy, the following issues will be discussed: basics of tourism policy, urban tourism, sustainable tourism, classification of threats related to the sustainable development of urban tourism.Material and methods. The study is of theoretical and conceptual nature. The following research methods will be used: critical analysis of the literature and methods of logical operations.Results. The effect of the considerations is to propose the assumptions of the concept of sustainable urban tourism development policy.Conclusions. The most important problems related to the functioning of sustainable tourism were indicated, taking into account the impact of tourism on the natural environment and on overtourism.

In the pursuit of the tourism boom, there has been a considerable rise in demand and exploitation of exhaustible resources. This not only poses a major menace to the biosphere but also puts oneself in jeopardy. Despite its promising start post-Pandemic, no real research on the influence of nature is being conducted, except for recognizing the beneficial impact that industries have produced. The study investigated various ways in which tourism industries influence the environment. Aside from exploring the destinations, the study encourages each tourist to bring back sustainable ideas as a souvenir of their visit, as well as stakeholders to be conscious of the need of developing infrastructure sustainably. These need active engagement from both tourists and other stakeholders. Finally, the study finishes with a sensible instructive remark about the need of balancing the tourist industry, infrastructural development, and the environment. Abstract:
Even though the World Tourism Organization described Sustainable Tourism as a tourism form that could contribute to the future survival of the industry, the current reality is quite different, since it has not been firmly established in society at expected levels. The present study analyzes which variables drive the consumption of this tourism type, taking tourist awareness as the key element. To this awareness, we must add the current crisis experienced by the tourism industry caused by COVID-19, since it can benefit Sustainable Tourism development, promoting less crowded destinations that favor social distancing. For this, the existing literature on Sustainable Tourism has been examined in order to create a model that highlights the relations among these variables. To determine the meaning of these relations, a sample of 308 tourists was analyzed through structural equation models using Partial Least Squares. The results show that there is a clear attitude on the part of the tourist to develop Sustainable Tourism, driven by the positive effects and motivation it entails, as well as the satisfaction the tourist perceives when consuming a responsible tourism type.

Abstract:
Tourism is an important part of the global economy and culture. However, the tourism sector accounts for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This is why it is imperative to move towards a more sustainable tourism model. Developing countries consider tourism as an essential element for economic development and poverty alleviation. The aim of the research was to reveal the development of sustainable tourism in Essaouira, specifically. We conducted research by gathering data and developing a series of questionnaires. Our sample design, known as simple random sampling, ensured that every item in the population had an equal opportunity to be included in the sample and any possible sample. Essaouira, as a city in the developing country of Morocco, tourism plays an important role in economic growth, and has become a popular tourist destination. Sustainable development is needed in order to increase the length of stay of tourists; therefore, it is necessary to behave responsibly and ethically towards nature. This is also important because certain tourist activities have negative impacts on Essaouira’s environment. Apart from the local population and tourists, the local government should also take a more active role in creating sustainability. The properly chosen marketing policy of tourist organizations can also make tourism more sustainable in Essaouira. Besides, tourism organizations and tourism-related companies should develop sustainable products.

Abstract:
The city of Bou Sa?da is one of the Algerian cities that have diverse tourism resources, but it has not been adopted as a premier tourist spot nor has it benefited from the tourism programs established within the national strategy for sustainable tourism development for Horizons 2030, which made the tourism weak compared to other Algerian regions that have similar tourism elements. This study aims to evaluate the existing tourism strategy to address the shortcomings and provide solutions by focusing on four variables: tourist destination, tourism industry, the tourist market, and actors in tourism. We have relied on the following techniques: SWOT analysis to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the tourism sector in Bou Sa?da, MCDA Analysis using AHP for spatial planning for the future tourism industry, and a questionnaire form distributed to the residents, the tourists and the experts to take their suggestions and use them in guiding the tourism planning process. The results of the study proved that there is a weakness in the tourism planning process in the city of Bou Sa?da, which negatively affects the tourism traffic, that is still weak compared to the qualifications it has, which if exploited according to a wellthought-out strategy, the city will become a targeted tourist destination.

Mancingan Rice Terrace holds potential as a community-based artificial tourist attraction that supports sustainable tourism through a Community-Based Tourism (CBT) approach. This study aims to evaluate the tourism system at Mancingan Rice Terrace, focusing on the role of local communities in management, the development of artificial attractions, and tourism's economic, social, and environmental impacts. A qualitative-descriptive approach was employed to analyze community involvement in destination development and their contribution to tourism sustainability. The findings reveal that artificial attractions, such as trekking paths, photo spots, and agricultural education programs, have enhanced the site’s appeal and boosted local economic growth. Active community participation has not only created jobs but also preserved environmental sustainability. However, challenges such as inadequate promotion and infrastructure remain obstacles to further tourism development in Mancingan Rice Terrace. Recommendations for strengthening promotion, community training, and infrastructure improvements are proposed to ensure more effective and sustainable tourism management. This research provides insights into the importance of community collaboration in developing sustainable artificial tourist attractions.

The article addresses two global challenges in the realm of tourism participation: sustainable development and an ageing society. Our research aimed to determine whether European seniors engage in tourism and whether the factors influencing tourist destinations are related to sustainable tourism. To achieve this, we utilized correspondence analysis with representative Eurobarometer data. Our findings confirm that seniors actively participate in tourism. The majority of seniors in the European Union frequently express their heightened concern for health and safety measures when travelling in the post-COVID-19 era. Moreover, the analysis identified the countries where seniors actively pursue sustainable development goals during their tourism activities. Future research should focus on understanding the decision-making processes of seniors when choosing tourist destinations and accessing tourism offers. These results provide a foundation for designing tourism offerings that cater to the current and future needs of seniors.

Abstract:
Tourists play a vital role in the development of sustainable tourism by boosting the local economy, preserving culture, and reducing environmental degradation. However, tourists’ decisions to visit destinations and promote sustainable tourism are influenced by reliable infrastructure, safety, security, and trust in institutions. A well-developed infrastructure, a peaceful environment, and efficient tourism management encourage tourism and sustainability. Therefore, this research examines the effect of tourism, infrastructure, institutions, and place attachment on sustainable tourism. Additionally, the study examines the role of infrastructure, institutions, and place attachment on tourists’ satisfaction in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Primary data were collected through surveys and Google forms from five tourist districts, Swat, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Upper Dir, and Lower Dir of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A total of 250 responses were collected from tourists using a proportionate random sampling technique. The data were analyzed using the partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique. The results show that place attachment and tourist satisfaction positively affect sustainable tourism, while infrastructure, place attachment, and trust in institutions positively affect tourist satisfaction. Furthermore, sustainable tourism was more influenced by tourist satisfaction, and tourist satisfaction was more influenced by trust in institutions and infrastructure. The study also confirmed that infrastructure mediates the relationship between trust in institutions and sustainable tourism and between trust in institutions and tourist satisfaction. The study provides valuable insight to policymakers in assessing tourists’ behavior and sustainable tourism.

Good tourism management will improve the welfare of the community in the tourism destination area. The relationship between the competitiveness of tourist destinations will have an impact on sustainable tourism. The purpose of creating competitiveness is to gain and expand market share, both domestic and international, by participating in ensuring that the availability of resources to support tourism is used efficiently and sustainably. Along with the demands of sustainable tourism competitiveness, especially in ASEAN countries, it shows that competitiveness and sustainability have a mutual and supportive relationship. Therefore, a DMO (Destination Management Organization) institution is needed that has the function of leading and coordinating destination elements (attractions, amenities, accessibility) and a sustainable environment.

Nowadays tourism has become a very important element of modern life and culture and a significant factor of economical growth. In this article the problem of ecotourism in Poland is presented along with its perspectives of development and the conflicts which occur when it is practised on the large scale. This article presents areas mostly affected by the negative changes during the excessive practice of tourism e.g. seaside areas, high mountains, river banks, forests, caves, national parks, nature reserves. When one particular area becomes a national or scenic park, nature reserve or Natura 200 Area, it immediately attracts increased tourist traffic. All the forms of environmental protection are the most valuable locations to practice ecotourism. The least conflictual form of tourism is ecotourism = sustainable tourism. Indonesia has the potential of natural resources for tourism development. One of the natural resources that the government continues to develop in Indonesia is the Lake Toba tourist attraction. The level of tourism visits at Lake Toba tourist destinations in Indonesia in recent years is low. Policies designed to provide a socially inclusive and ecologically sound tourism framework are weak in encouraging local wisdom-based tourism in the tourist destinations of Lake Toba, North Sumatera, Indonesia. Local wisdom-based government policies are essential and strategic because they can trigger an increase in the quality of tourism in Lake Toba. Government regulations and policies that show concern for local wisdom for the Lake Toba area in North Sumatera, Indonesia, can support and guide community involvement. Introduction. The impact of globalization and convergence on the rapprochement of nations leads to an increase in the tourism role through strengthening human needs for socialization in today's information society. The underutilization of the domestic potential of the tourism industry necessitates its exploration to formulate directions for further development and growth. The purpose of the study is further development of the theoretical basis and conditions for the sustainable develop-ment of the tourism sector in the region. Results. The key issues of constant coordination and harmonization of human relations and environment are identi-fied in the context of sustainable tourism development by vectors of time and space. The alternative absence of sustainable tourism development paradigm has been proved. The concept of «sustainable development» is given. It is suggested to un-derstand the sustainable development of tourism as a development that can fully meet the needs of tourists in the present time, taking into account the interests of the tourist destination in expanding the reproduction of their own resource potential in the future. The determinants, criteria and general principles of the sustainable tourism development concept are defined. The interrelation of the criterion with the following components is justified: «availability – quality – safety» – their essence is disclosed. The role of tourism as a component of sustainable regional development is revealed. The types of sustainability that are inherent in tourism scenarios have been described. The basis of urgent problems of tourist development and recreational sphere of the region is monitored. The changes to tourism legislation developed by the Ministry of Economic Development has been considered. The re-sults of the tourist industry analysis of Ukraine by individual types are given. The low attractiveness of Ukraine as a tourist center has been proved, where the main reason is underdeveloped infrastructure, which requires considerable investment. The directions of development of individual segments of tourism are determined. The ways of brand developing of Ukraine as a tourist destination are considered. <strong>Abstract</strong> Sustainable tourism management can generate income and enhance related business that contribute to economic growth at both local and national level, promote natural and environmental conservation and local culture, create careers and income for local people as well as building long-term strength of local communities and the nation.&nbsp; This research study aims to 1) examine the level of the following variables; tourist attraction potential, leadership, government policy, innovation and sustainable tourism management, 2) explore the relationship among those variables; tourist attraction potential, government policy, leadership and innovation affecting the sustainable tourism management in the east coast tourism development zone, and 3) develop the model of sustainable tourism management in the east coast tourism development zone.&nbsp; The mixed research methodology was applied between quantitative and qualitative terms. In view of the quantitative term, the sample group consisted of 360 tourism operators in the east coast tourism development zone whereas its sample size was calculated based on the 20-time criteria of the observed variables and systematic sampling.&nbsp; Data collection was undertaken through questionnaires that were later analyzed by the structural equation modelling. For the qualitative term, an in-depth interview was conducted with 20 primary informants who were tourism management expertise in the east coast tourism development zone. The research findings revealed that the variables; tourist attraction potential, leadership, government policy, innovation and sustainable tourism management in the east coast tourism development zone were all at a high level, 2) the variables ; tourist attraction potential, leadership, government policy and innovation affected the sustainable tourism management in the east coast tourism development zone with statistical significance level of .05, and 3) the sustainable tourism management model as developed by the researcher was called GLTI-STM&nbsp; Model (G = Government Policy, L = Leadership, T = Tourist Attractions Potential, I = Innovation, STM = Sustainable Tourism Management). Additionally, the qualitative findings indicated that to manage the sustainable tourism in the east coast tourism development zone, the application of new technology and approaches such as 3D (Data Digitizing, Data Sharing, Digitalized Process), intelligence data base management system for tourism data, ecosystem strategy, creation of virtual tour experience and tourism applications are recommended for development and improvement of tourism patterns according to the sustainable tourism principle. The findings in this study can be also applied as a guideline to determine the policy for conservation of natural resources in parallel with the sustainable tourist attraction development, and to standardize the tourism management to be more effective at the international level for future creation of economic value.

PurposeThis paper questions the present state of the world's tourism industry and advocates the need for an approach where quality assumes greater importance than quantity.Design/methodology/approachThis paper provides an analysis of the tourism industry's recent evolution while trying to identify reasons for its decline which amongst others, include security issues and economic crisis.FindingsIn developing a sustainable tourism industry especially in these economically challenging times, we must learn to appreciate what is precious in our own lives and in our respective communities. This in turn will help us maintain and further explore the uniqueness of our tourist destinations. The greatest threat to leisure and tourism (and to a lesser extent to business travel) is the fact that travel has lost a good deal of its romance and enchantment due to a global approach to its development. In the rush for efficiency and quantitative analysis the travel and tourism industry may have forgotten that each traveller has unique expectations.Originality/valueSustainable tourism is not only about how a tourist location adapts but also about what a city or destination accomplishes when re-discovering its inner essence and then promoting it.

Abstract:
Sustainability of tourism destinations has become the main focus in planning and managing tourism development. Despite existing legislation and an institutional framework to safeguard balanced tourism growth, many destinations fail to properly address it. So far, studies are limited in exploring sustainable tourism impacts from a policy perspective. This study follows previous ones in using the triple bottom line sustainability approach to define tourism impacts. It argues, in particular, for a nexus between understanding of policy perception and sustainability, and it applies this to tourist destinations in Serbia to determine whether they are operating sustainably. For this purpose, the data were collected using a combination of multiple methods, involving interviews with policymakers and content analysis of strategic documents. This study further suggests a model that assesses the extent of the sustainability of tourist destinations. The results illustrate the importance of understanding policy perceptions in shaping and facilitating sustainability and informing policy enablers on how to improve and reform current tourism development. The model can be adopted and applied to any tourist destination facing an inevitable need to re-shape their tourism development plans and policies, while the implications address the need to build a participative policy approach to sustainable tourism development.

Abstract:
The impact of tourism on the local community and environment has raised the concern of the sustainability of tourist destinations. Therefore, in the year 1998, the World Tourism Organization (WTO) [1] enriched the concept of sustainable tourism by defining it as “tourism development that can meet the demand of both tourists and host communities while preserving, and improving the opportunity for future development”. Abstract:
With sustainable tourism and escalating food demands, vertical farming emerges as a pivotal innovation that bridges agricultural sustainability and tourism. This paper explores the role of tourist engagement at vertical farms in promoting sustainability awareness, altering perceptions of naturalness of vertical farm agricultural products, and shaping purchase intentions for these products. Utilizing Consumer Socialization Theory (CST) as a framework, the study delves into how tourist engagement at vertical farms can serve as a catalyst for enhancing the appeal and acceptance of sustainable agricultural practices. A cross sectional survey of 558 tourists in Malaysia and the Greater Bay Area of China was conducted using a quantitative approach. A Structural Equation Model (SEM) analysis revealed that tourist engagement significantly increases sustainability awareness and perceived naturalness, which, in turn, positively impacts purchase intentions. Interestingly, while tourist engagement directly increases purchase intentions, sustainability awareness does not directly increase purchase intentions, underscoring the nuanced role perceived naturalness plays in the decision making process. The findings underscore the importance of integrating vertical farming into the tourism experience as a strategy for promoting sustainable agricultural practices and increasing consumer acceptance. This study enriches the discourse on sustainable tourism's role in advancing sustainable agriculture, providing key insights for stakeholders in both the tourism and agriculture sectors to foster environmental stewardship and sustainable consumer behavior.

Abstract:
This study aims to analyze volunteer tourist satisfaction and host community perceptions and design a sustainable volunteer tourism management model. This research includes qualitative research using mixed analysis methods. The data consists of primary and secondary data from Afo Tour and Travel North Maluku, Volunteer Tourists, and the host community in 2018, 2019 and 2021. The study found that volunteer tourism provides satisfaction for tourists and host communities. The most dominant factors providing satisfaction are Nature Tourism, Marine tourism and Shark feeding attractions, Knowledge transfer, Outbound and Culinary. Tourist satisfaction has an impact on loyalty to volunteer tourists. Volunteer tourism managers must implement a “two-sided satisfaction model” that emphasizes the satisfaction of tourists and host communities as the key to achieving the sustainability of volunteer tourism.

Abstract:
Sustainable tourism minimises the adverse impact of tourism on the natural environment and local culture while stimulating the socioeconomic development of regions or even countries. Geoportals and (geo)informational mashup portals significantly affect sustainable tourism planning through modern computer solutions for more sustainable planning of tourist activities on the demand and supply sides. This study had two research aims: (1) to develop a checklist for assessing the functionality of tourist geoportals and evaluate it and (2) to assess the inventory of functions useful for sustainable tourism planning available at selected geoportals with the checklist. The aims were pursued with an original research tool, the Functionality Assessment Checklist (FAC). The FAC is a set of original criteria useful for assessing the quality of tourist geoportals. This study investigated the following research questions: (Q1) What functions should be included on a checklist for assessing the functionality of geoportals useful for sustainable tourism planning? (Q2) What functions should be included in a geoportal to facilitate sustainable tourism planning? The original contributions of this article are (1) the checklist for assessing the functionality of tourist geoportals and (2) the assessment of the impact of geoportal’s functionality on the possibility of planning sustainable tourism. The functionality assessment revealed that the tested geoportals have most of the tourism, informational, educational, and use-related functions. This suggests they can be useful for sustainable tourism planning.

Blanza, Ma Gerlia. "Longitudinal Dynamics of MSME Growth in Iloilo, Philippines: Assessing the Economic and Social Ripple Effects of Domestic Tourism." International Conference on Tourism Research 8, no. 1 (April 14, 2025): 12–20. https://doi.org/10.34190/ictr.8.1.3488.

Abstract:
This longitudinal study delves into the impact of domestic tourism on Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Iloilo, Philippines, highlighting the economic advantages and the concurrent challenges. Interviews with MSME representatives revealed a significant boost in revenue during peak tourist seasons, leading to business growth and enhanced local employment. This economic benefit is further underscored by improvements in community infrastructure, funded largely by tourism-generated revenue. However, the study also uncovers several challenges. Chief among these is the inconsistency of seasonal income, compelling MSMEs to continually adapt to changing tourist preferences. This dynamic presents a complex balancing act for businesses striving to capitalize on tourism benefits while managing the unpredictability of the market. Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) reinforce the positive economic impact on MSMEs, but also bring to light critical concerns about environmental degradation and potential cultural erosion. These discussions suggest a delicate interplay between economic growth and the preservation of environmental and cultural integrity. Collaborative efforts among MSMEs are highlighted as a vital strategy to maximize tourism opportunities. The study recommends policy support, capacity building, and strengthened inter-business collaboration to address the identified challenges and enhance the benefits of tourism. Such collaboration is deemed essential for promoting sustainable tourism practices. Observations during the study indicate that businesses in tourist-heavy areas generally thrive, benefiting from their strategic locations and physical attributes. Nonetheless, there are evident signs of environmental stress in these areas, underscoring the need for urgent implementation of sustainable tourism practices. The study concludes that while domestic tourism is a catalyst for economic growth in Iloilo, it also presents sustainability challenges. These dual aspects of tourism's impact necessitate further research into sustainable tourism practices that can strike a balance between economic development and environmental and cultural preservation. The findings advocate for a nuanced approach to tourism development, ensuring it contributes sustainably to the economic and social development of the community, while safeguarding its environmental and cultural heritage.
