Abstract:
This study attempted a holistic synthesis of the problems of Sustainable Development (SD) and Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) in the dry deciduous forests of south western Zambia. There are scale-based implications across the entire range of actions required for SFM and REDD+ implementation in tropical forests. Addressing scale mismatches in ecological, social and socio-ecological systems is essential and may help resolve epistemological differences in interdisciplinary research. The importance of local context to SD and SFM supported a case study approach to the social-ecological system.

Sustainable forest management is a key issue in Malawi. Malawi is a relatively small, resource poor, densely populated country, which in some areas is close to exceeding the energy capacity of the environment to support it. Despite the importance of forestry in Malawi, there is a severe lack of knowledge about the current state of Malawi’s forest resources. Remote sensing has the potential to provide current and historical insights into forest cover change. However, Malawi faces a number of key challenges with regards to in-country remote sensing. These include technical capacity for obtaining

Abstract:
This thesis has considered the issue of sustainable highway engineering in Ireland. The research was funded by a Collaborative Award in Science and Technology (CAST), with Lagan Holdings being the industrial collaborator. CAST requires product related research. An extensive review of academic and trade literature identified that the further development of cold mix asphalts should be the product to be investigated. The specific cold mix investigated was wet mix macadam stabilised using foamed bitumen Le. Foamix. This material had been used by the collaborating industrialist for nearly 8 years.

Abstract:
Mineral resources are essential to the functioning and wellbeing of human societies. There is mounting concern, however, about the environmental degradation and social impacts typically resulting from mineral extraction. As a result, the mining industry is increasingly embracing the sustainability agenda, that is, pursuing development which ostensibly balances economic, social and environmental interests. In recent years, escalating anxiety over climate change in particular has propelled forest conservation to the top of the sustainability agenda which, in the case of mining, has increased att

Abstract:
This study examined the contribution that nutrients released from decomposing brash (branches and needles) left on restock sites make to the growth of new trees. Stable isotope techniques were developed to trace the movement of nitrogen, potassium, magnesium and calcium within trees and from brash to new trees. Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.) seedlings were labelled with 15N, 41K, 26Mg and 44Ca in either a generous or poor supply for one growing season. One group of these seedlings was provided with an unlabelled generous or poor nutrient supply for the following season. By varyi
