This thesis presents the design of an integrated power electronics building block (iPEBB) for high-density systems. The PEBB concept allows for modular converters that can perform various power conversions. The design begins with exploring state-of-the-art substrates that will serve as the foundation for the iPEBB. Due to the integrated design, the substrate plays a vital role in the thermal, electrical, and mechanical performance, and contributes to the weight and reliability of the iPEBB. State-of-the-art organic direct-bonded copper (ODBC) substrates and multi-layer silicon nitride substrates are explored in this work. The ODBC is used to develop a common substrate for the converter, which allows for a high level of integration between different SiC half-bridges. Switching-cell prototypes based on the ODBC and multi-layer silicon nitride are fabricated to provide insight into the electrical and thermal performance of different substrates. This information will aid in the further redesign and refinement of the iPEBB concept.

Full textThe aim of this study is to synthesize diblock and triblock copolymers based on tert-butyldimethylsilyl methacrylate and dimethylsiloxane monomer units. These monomer units have been selected to elaborate polymer films both hydrolysable in the marine environment and with a low surface energy. These copolymers have been fully characterized and have been formulated to develop FRC/SPC hybrid antifouling coatings. The performances of these new coatings have been compared to the two main types of antifouling coatings on the market:- the Self-Polishing coatings (SPC), based on hydrolysable polymer binders with an efficiency relied on the release of biocides in the marine environment and the erosion of the coating. Unfortunately, these coatings toxic for the marine environment;- the Fouling Release Coatings (FRC), based on hydrophobic and non-toxic silicone-based coatings which limit the adhesion strength of fouling organisms. Nevertheless, they are not efficient during idle periods. Block copolymers with controlled architecture, chemical composition and molar masses have been synthesized via the RAFT process from poly(dimethylsiloxane)-based chain transfer agents. These macro-chain transfer agents have been previously prepared from mono- and di-hydroxylated poly(dimethylsiloxane)s with molar masses of 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 g.mol-1. Three series of copolymer have been synthesized with molar masses ranging from 12,000 to 60,000 g.mol-1 and a mass content of dimethylsiloxane units ranging from 3% to 57%. The water uptake, the erosion properties (SPC type) and the hydrophobicity (FRC-type) have been studied for both the binders and the coatings formulated with and without biocides. The evolution of the hydrophobic properties of the coatings' surface has been investigated during their immersion in artificial seawater. The anti-adhesion properties of one series of copolymers have been investigated toward two marine bacterial strains. Then, the antifouling efficiency of the binders and the coatings formulated with and without biocides has been evaluated during their in-situ immersion in the Mediterranean Sea for 16 months at a maximum

Full textNew hardware architectures developed for key blocks of the ISO/IEC 14496-10 video coding standard are discussed, proposed, implemented, and validated in this thesis. The standard is also called H.264, AVC (Advanced Video Coder) or MPEG-4 part 10, and is the state-of-the-art in video coding, presenting the highest compression ratios achievable by an internationally standardized video coder (ISO/IEC and ITU-T). The H.264 has already been revised three times: the first included new profiles for fidelity extension and professional applications. The second brought the scalability support (SVC – Scalable Video Coder). The third revision supports video sources with multiple views (MVC – Multi-view Video Coder). The present work developed high performance architectures for CABAC (Context-Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coder), which were challenging because of the bitwise data dependencies. A through revision of the alternative architectures and a specific architectural solution for CABAC encoding are presented in this thesis. A dedicated hardware architecture for a HIGH profile Deblocking Filter is also presented, developed, validated and synthesized for two different targets: FPGA and ASIC. The validation methodology is presented and applied to three different modules of the H.264 encoder. The H.264 blocks dealt with in this thesis work complement those developed by other works in the UFRGS research group and contribute to the development of complete encoders for real-time processing of high definition digital video at 1080p.

Full textThis work aims to verify the efficiency of parameterized SVI (Stochastic Volatility Inspired) model, presenting it as an alternative method to construct the implied volatility for stock and index options in Brazilian market. First, the financial option concept and its pricing theory are presented, including Black-Scholes and Heston models, the importance of implied volatility and its stochastic behavior and detailing the operation of each parameter of the SVI (Stochastic Volatility Inspired) model. An algorithm is developed on top of the theoretical basis, as well as its computational implementation. In addition, experiments are performed with real market data and their results are analyzed and compared with those of previous publications.

Full textWorldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) is the acronym for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.16 set of standards governing Air Interface for Fixed Broadband Wireless Access Systems. In the history of wireless systems, WiMAX is revolutionary technology as affords its users the Wi-Fi grade throughput and cellular system level of mobility. With WiMAX, broadband technology (traditionally ADSL and Fiber) goes wireless and WiMAX users can basically enjoy triple-play application, and split-second download and upload rates. WIMAX also offers full mobility much as traditional cellular systems do with features like seamless hand-over and roaming at vehicular speed; this is made possible because the system design covers the access network to core network. For the operator, WiMAX is a welcome development because it merges traditional cellular networks with broadband technology thus opening them to more business offerings and a larger client base and all this at a reduced cost of deployment. Base stations are comparatively cheaper and do not require extensive planning typical of other cellular systems thus WiMAX is aptly suited for emerging markets where infrastructure cost is a major issue; little wonder a lot of 3rd world countries have signified interest in the technology.
