Abstract:
P2P video streaming combining SVC and MDC In this paper we propose and evaluate a combined SVC-MDC (Scalable Video Coding & Multiple Description Video Coding) video coding scheme for Peer-to-Peer (P2P) video multicast. The proposed scheme is based on a full cooperation established between the peer sites, which contribute their upload capacity during video distribution. The source site splits the video content into many small blocks and assigns each block to a single peer for redistribution. Our solution is implemented in a fully meshed P2P network in which peers are connected to each other via UDP (User Datagram Protocol) links. The video content is encoded by using the Scalable Video Coding (SVC) method. We present a flow control mechanism that allows us to optimize dynamically the overall throughput and to automatically adjust video quality for each peer. Thus, peers with different upload capacity receive different video quality. We also combine the SVC method with Multiple Description Coding (MDC) to alleviate the packet loss problem. We implemented and tested this approach in the PlanetLab infrastructure. The obtained results show that our solution achieves good performance and remarkable video quality in the presence of packet loss.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Superior vena cava (SVC) isolation has improved the outcomes of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) originating from the SVC. However, right phrenic nerve (PN) injury is a major complication of this procedure. Therefore, in cases where the right atrium (RA)-SVC conduction site is near the PN, tremendous care is required to prevent PN injury. Case summary Repeated SVC isolation was performed due to the recurrence of SVC-triggered AF. The RA-SVC activation map revealed that the partial conduction block line was detected, and the propagation broke through the gap at the course of the PN site from the RA to the SVC. Since the course of the PN identified at high-output pacing was wide, the SVC was isolated by making longitudinal lines on both sides of the PN in a cranial direction, except for where low-output pacing captured, confirming compound muscle action potential to detect PN injury. Eventually, the SVC was successfully isolated without PN injury, and the sinus rhythm was maintained without antiarrhythmic drugs during a 14-month follow-up period. Conclusion Superior vena cava isolation was difficult depending on the course of the PN, and some methods to avoid PN injury were reported. However, this method can facilitate safe and effective SVC isolation with the conventional system, including the cases with AF foci located on the course of the PN.

Abstract:
In this paper, new static VAR compensators SVCs schemes for inductive and capacitive reactive power are developed. The provided schemes improve the flexibility and power system quality of SVCs by developing new circuit topologies with new control strategy of the reactive power. New circuit schemes are introduced for thyristors switched reactors TSR and thyristors switched capacitors TSC to design harmonic-free SVC with higher discrete number of reactive power levels. This paper provides the control algorithm and block diagram of the new SVCs schemes. The switching strategies of TSR and TSC are described and implemented. The new scheme of TSC requires special modifications to decrease transient effects and implementation of specific switching strategies to acquire SVC with high power quality indexes.

An ASIC front-end design of intra and inter prediction module based on H.264/SVC standard is proposed in this paper. State machine is used in intra prediction module for timing control. A branch reusable unit ADDR3221 is constructed and optimized to implement the intra prediction in RTL-level. In inter prediction module, the three-level MUX is used to realize the level control from the frame-level to block-level. According to the different segmentation of luma and chroma, the computation of the motion vector and interpolation is realized. Abstract:
In the current scenario, transmission cost allocation is one of the significant difficulties arises due to the expansion in power exchanges in transmission open access looked by electric energy area. The proposed method calculates transmission cost allocation by considering bilateral & multilateral transactions. The transmission cost allocation approach in the proposed method derives from equivalent bilateral which states that a small amount of every generator provides with each request in consistently and separated manner. The influence of power flow in network via all lines due to a transaction is measured by power flow solution. This paper discusses the congestion problem in the deregulated electricity market using an optimal power flow (OPF). The transmission lines are uncongested using re-dispatch method and then taxes are calculated for the establishment of the flexible A.C. transmission systems (FACTS) devices in the transmission network to reduce taxes. The excellent location of FACTS device can be identified by the bus on which highest T. The result indicates that the combination of TCSC and SVC incredibly discount the measure of re-dispatched power which provides optimal operating point nearer to the market settlement. Hence, TCSC and SVC gives convenient option to block the execution of transmission estimation utilizing approaches and calculate the transmission price.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Pacemaker-induced cardiomyopathy (PICM) can occur in up to 9% of patients having a pacemaker. Pacemaker-induced cardiomyopathy can be treated by upgrade to a biventricular pacemaker with a left ventricular (LV) lead implantation. The procedure can be technically challenging in patients with persistent left-sided superior vena cava (PLSVC). Case summary We report the case of a 72-year-old gentleman with a PLSVC, who had a dual-chamber pacemaker implanted 15 years ago for complete heart block. After 12 years of good health, the gentleman developed breathlessness due to PICM. At upgrade to biventricular pacemaker, his coronary sinus was found to be occluded and a collateral branch was used to successfully position an LV lead. Marked clinical improvement was seen before representation with syncope after 2 years due to simultaneous failure of both LV and right ventricular leads. Subsequently, a right-sided de novo biventricular pacemaker was implanted. In this instance, the PLSVC was beneficial because it isolated the existing leads from the new implant, thereby reducing the risk of SVC obstruction. Discussion Although implantation of pacemaker leads through a PLSVC constitutes a challenging procedure due to manoeuvring difficulties of the pacing leads into the cardiac chambers, in this particular case, the presence of PLSVC was beneficial because it meant that no leads were present in the true SVC, reducing the risk of occlusion and avoiding the need for lead extraction.

Abstract:
The need for high-density power electronics converters becomes more critical by the day as energy consumption continues to grow across the world. Specifically, the need for medium-voltage (MV) high-density converters in power distribution systems, electric ships, and airplanes become more critical as weight and space becomes more a premium. The limited space and footprint require new packaging technologies and methods to develop an integrated power converter. The advancement of wide-bandgap (WBG) devices like silicon carbide (SiC) allows converters to have higher power and faster switching... To benefit from these devices, the packaging of the converter needs to be carefully considered. This thesis presents the design of a 250 kW integrated power electronics building block (iPEBB) for future electric system applications. This work explores the common substrate concept that would serve as the electrical, thermal, and mechanical foundation for the converter. State-of-the-art organic direct-bonded copper (ODBC) is explored to serve as the material foundation for the common substrate. Multi-domain simulations are used to design the integrated SiC bridges to achieve a power loop inductance of 3.5 nH, a maximum temperature of 175 °C, and a weight of 16 kg. ODBC and silicon nitride switching cells are packaged and analyzed in order to see the benefits on a multi-layer design as well as determining electrical and thermal trade-offs. The insights gained from hardware testing will help in the redesign and refinement of the iPEBB.

This thesis presents the design of an integrated power electronics building block (iPEBB) for high-density systems. The PEBB concept allows for modular converters that can perform various power conversions. The design begins with exploring state-of-the-art substrates that will serve as the foundation for the iPEBB. Due to the integrated design, the substrate plays a vital role in the thermal, electrical, and mechanical performance, and contributes to the weight and reliability of the iPEBB. State-of-the-art organic direct-bonded copper (ODBC) substrates and multi-layer silicon nitride substrates are explored in this work. The ODBC is used to develop a common substrate for the converter, which allows for a high level of integration between different SiC half-bridges. Switching-cell prototypes based on the ODBC and multi-layer silicon nitride are fabricated to provide insight into the electrical and thermal performance of different substrates. This information will aid in the further redesign and refinement of the iPEBB concept.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to synthesize diblock and triblock copolymers based on tert-butyldimethylsilyl methacrylate and dimethylsiloxane monomer units. These monomer units have been selected to elaborate polymer films both hydrolysable in the marine environment and with a low surface energy. These copolymers have been fully characterized and have been formulated to develop FRC/SPC hybrid antifouling coatings. The performances of these new coatings have been compared to the two main types of antifouling coatings on the market:- the Self-Polishing coatings (SPC), based on hydrolysable polymer binders with an efficiency relied on the release of biocides in the marine environment and the erosion of the coating. Unfortunately, these coatings toxic for the marine environment;- the Fouling Release Coatings (FRC), based on hydrophobic and non-toxic silicone-based coatings which limit the adhesion strength of fouling organisms. Nevertheless, they are not efficient during idle periods. Block copolymers with controlled architecture, chemical composition and molar masses have been synthesized via the RAFT process from poly(dimethylsiloxane)-based chain transfer agents. These macro-chain transfer agents have been previously prepared from mono- and di-hydroxylated poly(dimethylsiloxane)s with molar masses of 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 g.mol-1. Three series of copolymer have been synthesized with molar masses ranging from 12,000 to 60,000 g.mol-1 and a mass content of dimethylsiloxane units ranging from 3% to 57%. The water uptake, the erosion properties (SPC type) and the hydrophobicity (FRC-type) have been studied for both the binders and the coatings formulated with and without biocides. The evolution of the hydrophobic properties of the coatings' surface has been investigated during their immersion in artificial seawater. The anti-adhesion properties of one series of copolymers have been investigated toward two marine bacterial strains. Then, the antifouling efficiency of the binders and the coatings formulated with and without biocides has been evaluated during their in-situ immersion in the Mediterranean Sea for 16 months at a maximum

Abstract:
New hardware architectures developed for key blocks of the ISO/IEC 14496-10 video coding standard are discussed, proposed, implemented, and validated in this thesis. The standard is also called H.264, AVC (Advanced Video Coder) or MPEG-4 part 10, and is the state-of-the-art in video coding, presenting the highest compression ratios achievable by an internationally standardized video coder (ISO/IEC and ITU-T). The H.264 has already been revised three times: the first included new profiles for fidelity extension and professional applications. The second brought the scalability support (SVC – Scalable Video Coder). The third revision supports video sources with multiple views (MVC – Multi-view Video Coder). The present work developed high performance architectures for CABAC (Context-Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coder), which were challenging because of the bitwise data dependencies. A through revision of the alternative architectures and a specific architectural solution for CABAC encoding are presented in this thesis. A dedicated hardware architecture for a HIGH profile Deblocking Filter is also presented, developed, validated and synthesized for two different targets: FPGA and ASIC. The validation methodology is presented and applied to three different modules of the H.264 encoder. The H.264 blocks dealt with in this thesis work complement those developed by other works in the UFRGS research group and contribute to the development of complete encoders for real-time processing of high definition digital video at 1080p.

Wu, Jia. "Implementation of a 100kW Soft-Switched DC Bus Regulator Based on Power Electronics Building Block Concept." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32468.

Full text
Abstract:
Power electronics building blocks (PEBBs) are standardized building blocks used to integrate power electronics systems. The PEBB approach can achieve low cost, high redundancy, high reliability, high flexibility and easy maintenance for large-scale power electronics systems. This thesis presents the implementation of a 100kW PEBB-based soft-switched bus regulator for an 800V DC distributed power system. The zero current transition (ZCT) soft-switching technique is used to improve the performance of the bus regulator by minimizing switching loss and improving overall efficiency. PEBB modules and a digital control building block are the subsystems of the DC bus regulator. This thesis addresses the design issues at subsystem and system levels. These include: operational principles and design of ZCT PEBB modules; design and implementation of the digital control block, based on DSP and EPLD; and modeling and control design of the DC bus regulator. There are several considerations when using the ZCT soft-switching technique in three-phase applications: the timing of the auxiliary switch gate signals must be arranged differently; there are low-frequency harmonics caused by the pulse width limits; and there is high thermal stress on the resonant capacitors. These issues are resolved by utilizing the sensed phase current information and the design freedom in the PWM modulator. A PWM modulation technique is proposed that can considerably reduce the switching events and further remove the associated loss while keeping THD low. Reduced switching events alleviate the thermal issue of the resonant capacitors. The same modulation technique can avoid the low-frequency harmonics caused by the pulse width limits and double the sampling frequency. The phase current information is used to deal with the control timing issue of the auxiliary switches and to control the three-phase soft-switching operation in order to achieve better efficiency. Additionally, the phase current information is used to implement dead time compensation to reduce THD. The soft-switched DC bus regulator has been tested up to a 100kW power level with 20kHz switching frequency. Experimental results demonstrate that high performance of the DC bus regulator is accomplished in terms of wide control bandwidth, low THD, unity power factor, high efficiency and high power density.

Abstract:
We live in an information hungry age, we generate and process information at a rate never before recorded in the history of mankind. Today’s computing platforms are run on Gigahertz multi-core processors churning out Gigabits streams of data that need to be transmitted as quickly as possible. Often times the source and the destination are mobile which means wired connections are not a choice. This has led to an ever increasing need to develop wireless access technologies that support high throughput regardless of the transmission environment. Till date, many proprietary solutions exist that seek to bridge this gap with little or no support for interoperability. For the sheer scale of development that is required, a standard based solution is the key. The IEEE 802.1x committee oversees the development of standards for wireless systems, it formed the 802.16 working group to develop a standards-based Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) solution. One of the fruits of this effort is the 802.16e standard fondly referred to as mobile WiMAX and it is the subject of study in this thesis. This thesis seeks to analyze the transmission characteristics of two of the antenna systems defined in the standard i.e. Adaptive Beamforming Systems and Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Systems. Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO): utilizes multiple antennas at the transmitter and receiver to provide diversity gain, multiplexing gain or both. Adaptive Antenna Systems (AAS): Adaptive array system uses an antenna array to generate in real-time radiation patterns with the main lobes and/or nulls dynamically tuned to specific directions in order to increase or suppress signal power in that direction.
Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) is the acronym for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.16 set of standards governing Air Interface for Fixed Broadband Wireless Access Systems. In the history of wireless systems, WiMAX is revolutionary technology as affords its users the Wi-Fi grade throughput and cellular system level of mobility. With WiMAX, broadband technology (traditionally ADSL and Fiber) goes wireless and WiMAX users can basically enjoy triple-play application, and split-second download and upload rates. WIMAX also offers full mobility much as traditional cellular systems do with features like seamless hand-over and roaming at vehicular speed; this is made possible because the system design covers the access network to core network. For the operator, WiMAX is a welcome development because it merges traditional cellular networks with broadband technology thus opening them to more business offerings and a larger client base and all this at a reduced cost of deployment. Base stations are comparatively cheaper and do not require extensive planning typical of other cellular systems thus WiMAX is aptly suited for emerging markets where infrastructure cost is a major issue; little wonder a lot of 3rd world countries have signified interest in the technology.

Abstract:
The Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been conducting R&D on thermochemical water-splitting Iodine-Sulfur (IS) process for hydrogen production to meet massive demand in the future hydrogen economy. A concept of sulfuric acid decomposer was developed featuring a heat exchanger block made of SiC. Recent activity has focused on the reliability assessment of SiC block. Although knowing the strength of SiC block is important for the reliability assessment, it is difficult to evaluate a large-scale ceramics structure without destructive test. In this study, a novel approach for strength estimation of SiC structure was proposed. Since accurate strength estimation of individual ceramics structure is difficult, a prediction method of minimum strength in the structure of the same design was proposed based on effective volume theory and optimized Weibull modulus. Optimum value of the Weibull modulus was determined for estimating the lowest strength. The strength estimation line was developed by using the determined modulus. The validity of the line was verified by destructive test of SiC block model, which is small-scale model of the SiC block. The fracture strength of small-scale model satisfied the predicted strength.

Abstract:
In automotive applications problems related to management and diagnostics play an important role to improve engine performance and to reduce fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. In the design of control systems the use of theoretical models for the simulation of engine behaviour proved to be very useful, and it is apparent from the literature. However, since automotive engines have become very complex plants, their modelling requires a comprehensive description of the behaviour of many processes and components. Combustion process has a strong influence on performance and emissions, but its theoretical description can be hardly combined with the requirements of control-oriented models (especially as regards “real-time” applications). Two simplified theoretical models are proposed in the paper, based on a thermodynamic and a simplified approach respectively. In the first case a single-zone method was followed with the introduction of an apparent heat release rate (HRR) described as a superposition of two Wiebe functions. Coefficients of these burning functions are estimated by means of Learning Machines (LM), i.e. Support Vector Machines (SVM), trained from experimental data and then embedded in a Simulink® block. In order to make calculation time shorter, a simpler and faster model based on the application of SVM was defined to describe combustion process. Starting from experimental data, the proposed SVM was trained and implemented in a Simulink® block to evaluate exhaust gas temperature and bmep directly from engine operating parameters. Both blocks were defined to be easily embedded in engine simulation models for control-oriented applications. Results were promising for both models, showing very short computation time. A comparison of theoretical outputs with experimental data is reported in the paper, together with an application of both calculation procedures to a comprehensive model of a modern automotive turbocharged Diesel engine.
