Full textThe shipping industry is an industry unlike any other. The conditions prevailing on the vessels can be stressful with the isolated environment as a contributing factor. In addition, shipping has always been and continues to be a male-dominated industry. There are still shortcomings in the workplace in terms of gender equality onboard. The isolated environment and the fact that women are usually fewer than men onboard can create a vulnerable environment for the former. This study has examined how male ship officers experience work environment issues that affect gender equality. The study has also investigated whether there is a possible attitude problem that affects gender equality on board. The study is based on a qualitative method in the form of semistructured interviews. The results show that male officers believe that there is a maledominated culture and jargon on the vessels. In many cases, this leads to women having to adapt to this culture and results in placing them in a vulnerable position.

Full textChange of Swedish ships’ nationality has been an ongoing process for several years. Even though this earlier concerned other segments of the Swedish maritime industry, the changing of a ship’s nationality is now common also amongst ferries. The purpose of this study was to find out what challenges there are in running ferries registered in Sweden. The purpose also included finding out how the future might look for Swedish maritime officers within the ferry industry. The study is based on interviews with five representatives from Swedish ferry companies and two additional interviews with a representative from a Swedish union for Swedish maritime officers and a Swedish maritime officer working in the ferry industry today. The result showed that the biggest challenge for the ferry industry in Sweden today is the cost of labor. This includes both the Swedish agreements and salary levels in Sweden. The result also showed that Swedish maritime officers in the future probably will have to accept working under other agreements less profitable than those existing today, especially as this kind of agreements can be found in other countries in the Baltic Sea Area. It also showed that Swedish maritime officers are highly respected for their competence and knowledge.

Full textShipping is constantly facing new challenges. One of the biggest challengesfacing the shipping industry today is digitalization. Much of the traditionalequipment on board ships today is digitized and integrated on the bridge. When equipment is digitized it does not mean that it gets better for theoperator. It’s important to see how this affects the work on board and that theofficers have the appropriate competence. This study aims to examineSwedish seafarers' views on the competence aspect in digitization and howthe work on digitization takes place within Swedish shipping companies. This study uses qualitative semi-structured interviews. The result shows thatall respondents see great challenges and opportunities with digitization.Swedish officers and Swedish ship owners are positive about digitization. Allrespondents believe that digital competence needs to follow the fastdeveloping digitalization to ensure that work onboard keeps on being safeand effective.

Full textThis thesis was a research on the onboard experience of female officers, today active in the Swedish merchant fleet, and of their thoughts regarding their future at sea. The purpose was to clarify whether the deck officer profession as of today is suited for women and if something could be done to make it more attractive to them; this in view of the small relative number of women in the profession. I chose the qualitative research design, analyzing data from five semi-structured interviews. This method was used since my primary objective was to understand possible gender issues onboard. The result showed that there is nothing in a deck officer’s work that can not be performed by a woman. Furthermore, the result pointed to the conclusion that female deck officers are subject to gender related discrimination and sexual harassment, but scarcely. The greatest obstacle for a future at sea proved to be family related, which also made more specific suggestions on how to make the deck officer profession more attractive to women difficult.

Full textThe aim of this study is to investigate how the next generation of Swedish officers relate to the transformal and transactional leadership at sea and if there is any differences in this relationship between the genders. The theoretical framework is based on the basis of the transformal and transactional leadership styles. For the method, we choses to use a qualitative approach and through semi-structured interviews with elements of scenario questions, we gathered materials and information from aspiring officers at Linnaeus University in Kalmar. The result confirms that a strong organizational culture do not take into account the personal relationships on board and that the lack of leadership is not conducive to building a functioning fellowship. Due to that the women answered more along the lines of the transformal leadership and so did the men but not to the same extent, we can not reliably support if there is any difference in the relationship between the genders.

With this thesis we would like to find out why Swedish students at a nautical choose to study at Maersks master programme instead of Kalmar Maritime Academy.
We also wanted to find out what factors play a role in the choice of school, how the students come in contact with the school and how they experience their studies at SIMAC.
We have interviewed some of the Swedish students during a visit at SIMAC. We chose to perform a qualitative study consisiting of open questions. The interviews were followed up with a questionnaire. These methods were suitable since we were interested in the student´s opinions. Our result is that the students who took part in our study perceived their school sometimes as unstructured and confusing. They also experienced problems with the Danish language. The main reason for staying at the school is the upcomming, remunerative, work at Maersk.
