Full textMy research, which uses the methods of comparative literature, is based on the concept of ‘world literature’ developed by Durisin; he supports the opportunity to pursue studies on the development and influence developed by Bloom from whom the comparison between different literatures can be done even in the absence of relations. Therefore, the comparison between Italo Svevo and Yi Sang, between Italian and Korean literature can be a fruitful issue to be addressed by this hermeneutical approach, even if there is not any direct connection between two authors. The intent of this thesis will be offered some further reflection on the historical significance of the presence of Svevo and Yi Sang in the culture of their country in this century, on the live value permanently of their shocking discovery (especially in the field of arts), on the ray of hope that their ‘message’ still leaves open, through the theme of psychoanalysis; the discovery is the condition of sick of our time; and the hope is a kind of salvation that could come from a painful duty as the need for continuous and ruthless self, which brings the man within the limits of a clear awareness of the importance of his being ‘sick’, so as to arrange an understanding and management criticism of reality, through a careful patrol of its interior, with/without self pretend.

Full textA breakthrough novel specially regarding its incorporation of psychoanalysis into literature , La coscienza di Zeno, by Italo Svevo, is also the masterpiece of an author placed in many intersections: he wrote from the boundaries of different cultures; in an adopted language; during the transition of two centuries; amid changes at the political and economical settings of Europe; and through the transformation of ideas and the narrative. This study aims to gather elements to better relate La coscienza to the complex intelectual environment of the late 19th century (marked by the conflict and the coexistence of scientism and irrationalism, positivism and pessimism), as well to the tradition of european novel. To this purpose, it benefits from the literary and sociohistorical criticism, and from Svevos articles and essays.

Full textFeeling himself a misfit in the world, the svevian protagonist apprehends it through devices (art, writing, drugs, and so on) which contribute to turn him away from it. He perceives reality as a plot to carry him into a struggle for life, therefore finally towards death. His way of protecting himself consists in the annihilation of all desire - which is made easier to the protagonist of Svevo's third novel by his age - and in the contemplation through writing, thereby finally mastering reality, creating by expression a less crude one from which death is banished
Céron, Emmeline. "Goethe, Musil, Svevo, de l'universalisme heureux à l'indétermination malheureuse." Thesis, Tours, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012TOUR2010.
Full textOn the one hand, the comparison of the Goethean utopias and Weltanschauung with the various modes of expression, in the works of fictions of Robert Musil and Italo Svevo, of the crisis of the European consciousness of the beginning of the XXth century and the meeting, in particular, between the golden age of the "happy" novel of formation that the work of Goethe embodies and the indetermination which characterizes the works of Svevo or Musil, allow to measure the evolution of both the conception of the individual and the process of individuation as well as to sound the nature of the new stakes which accompany the permanence of concerns such as the questions of the Me, the fate and the chance, the morality or the aesthetics. On the other hand, it is a question of observing how the ideals and the mythical fantasies (Faustian temptations, desire for absolute knowledge, ideal community, myth of the primitive androgyne) which already live in the Goethean spirituality find a place in the crepuscular context of the European crisis of the individuality or in the literary representation of a world in decline, without escaping however the lucid and ironic character of the respective styles of Musil and Svevo

Full textAlthough rewarded by a minor fortune than that which occurred to the novels, Svevo’s plays are a determinant parenthesis of his literary career: in fact, the writer has left thirteen commedies, distributed over a biographical arch which extends from 1880, the year of Ariosto governatore, up to, with La rigenerazione, the years immediately preceding his death. Consider, too, that the theater was a passion that accompanied Svevo for the whole of life, both as a frequenter of shows in Italy and abroad, both as a critic for the most important newspapers in Trieste. For these reasons, it seemed appropriate in this research back on a theme - that of Svevo’s plays - less regarded by critics. In the first section of the thesis, entitled Svevo e il teatro, after a short outline of the criticism and of the history of representations, we tried to delineate the borders of the relationship that joined Svevo to the world of the stage. In the second section of the work, entitled Trasgressione, ribellione e falsificazione nel teatro sveviano, were taken into analysis the plays; comedies were grouped according to three themes: transgression, rebellion and forgery.
