Abstract:
Since long before computers were even thought of, data has been collected and organized by diverse cultures across the world. Once access to the Internet became a reality for large swathes of the world’s population, the amount of data generated each day became huge, and continues to grow exponentially. It includes all our uploaded documents, videos, and photos; all our social media traffic; our online shopping; even the GPS data from our cars. Big Data: A Very Short Introduction explains how big data works and is changing the world around us, the effect it has on our everyday lives and in the business world, and it considers the attendant security risks.

Abstract:
In Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit megamusicalThe Phantom of the Opera(Broadway 1988), the title character invites a range of interpretations from both fellow characters and audience. Presented sometimes as superhuman (ghost, phantom, god, angel), sometimes subhuman (monster, animal, murderer, sociopath), the Phantom almost never manifests as a man with a disfigured face. Swathed in romance and coated with a layer of false pity, this musical invokes a number of standard plot tropes involving an Other versus a community, including several variations posited by scholars of Disability Studies. This chapter explores how this supposedly modernized take on a story so readily plays into old stereotypes without seeming to, resulting—without audience awareness—in an updated take on the freak show.

Abstract:
The reformed structures of composite monarchy would serve the Habsburg cause well in the struggle with the highly centralized French state. The Estates again managed the routine structures of ordinary taxation and the imposition of much extraordinary taxation; and they interposed their credit on behalf of the government. The War of the Second Coalition (1799–1801) would be another highpoint in the history of their financial mediation. The Estates helped preserve Habsburg authority during Napoleon’s occupation of Vienna and large swathes of the central lands on two occasions. That the government did not wobble in any significant way or the population succumb to the siren calls of the French is also attributable to the Habsburg regime’s firm base in the landowning classes as represented by the Estates.

Abstract:
Conflicts over natural resources are impossible to ignore in our world. We know that the tribespeople of the Amazon have been brutally dispossessed as great swathes of rainforest are destroyed. We understand that a key factor in many of the civil wars which have devastated African communities is the struggle to gain control over supplies of oil, diamonds, and gold. We may even remember that a relentless thirst for natural resources spurred Europe’s colonization of the world, shaping the very boundaries of nation-states in its aftermath. Countries such as Argentina, the Ivory Coast, and the Gold Coast (now Ghana) were even named after the resources to be found (or pillaged) there. Others (including Nigeria, Cameroon, Senegal, and Gambia) were named for the rivers which sustained local communities....

Abstract:
Bern’s newssheet gave a justification for its aggression, couched as a defence of Protestantism in Geneva (though Catholic Valais’s expansion was mentioned), but also to give reassurance that the geopolitical balance of power remained intact, given that the French conquest of Savoy was a fait accompli. The role of Fribourg for control of the Vaud has been underplayed by historians, concerned to emphasize Bern’s unremittingly aggressive intentions. But were not Bern’s motives primarily to neuter Savoy by holding strategic fortresses in pawn, and milking the Vaud financially, rather than controlling swathes of territory? But French designs upon Geneva and Savoy obliged Bern to switch tack. After the conquest, of course, defence of Protestantism did require territorial control. Fribourg’s motives combined territorial expansion and safeguarding Catholicism, while seeking to avoid encirclement by Bern.
