Abstract:
The first stable AA group in Sweden was founded in 1953. For many years Swedish AA lived in the shadow of a successful dissident movement, the Links. Thereby thousands of alcoholics got acquainted with the disease concept and with other parts of the AA ideology. The introduction of the Minnesota Model for alcohol treatment in the 1980s coincided with a general transition towards a market economy and the demands for professionalism in treatment. The impact of these changes on the Swedish AA should not be underestimated. The development had a turbo effect on it. This time the changes outside of

August Davis (1852–1936) led a group of Swedish Free Mission Friends in America known as the Free-Free, an early branch of what is today the Evangelical Free Church of America. Davis and his followers were known for such phenomena as falling down in the Spirit, having ecstatic visions, uttering unintelligible sounds, communicating the Holy Spirit through the laying on of hands, and teaching the baptism of the Holy Spirit as a second work of grace. Such activities occurred mostly in Chicago, Illinois, and throughout western Minnesota between 1885 and 1900. Davis and the Free-Free had direct org

The ank gene of the agent of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) codes for a protein with a predicted molecular size of 131.2 kDa that is recognized by serum from both dogs and humans infected with granulocytic ehrlichiae. As part of an effort to assess the phylogenetic relatedness of granulocytic ehrlichiae from different geographic regions and in different host species, the ankgene was PCR amplified and sequenced from a variety of sources. These included 10 blood specimens from patients with confirmed human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (three from New York, four from Wisconsin, two from Slove

In the 1880s, capitalism as a social and economic system integrated new geographic areas of the American continent. The construction of the Duluth & Iron Range Railroad (D&IR), financed by a group of Philadelphia investors led by Charlemagne Tower and later owned by the US Steel was part of this emerging political economy based on the exploitation of human and material resources. Migrant labor was in demand as it came cheap and, generally, floated between various construction-sites on the “frontier” of capitalism. The Swedish immigrants were one part of this group of “floaters” during

Chapter 1 compares the spatial agendas of the Swedish welfare state and Syriacs. The “Million Program” (1965 to 1974) saw Sweden develop one million dwelling units through standardized forms meant to reduce social inequalities. In contrast, Syriacs’ experiences with discrimination in theMiddle East made them positive to enclaves and spatial differentiation.

The Introduction explores modernism, equality, and standardization in the development of European suburbs. I question the predominant narratives of post-utopian decline or, alternatively, grassroots resilience and place the book within the framework of studies of suburbs and questions of European immigration and integration. Chapter 5 analyzes several new and controversial Syriac-dominated neighborhoods of custom-designed and formally elaborate single-family houses that majority Swedish planners regard as cautionary tales of too-flexible planning regulations. Syriac architectural displays of difference in affluent enclaves have required new forms of professional planning practice and reconsiderations of “participation.”
