Abstract:
Generation of designs allow firms to gain more competitive advantages and attract more potential customers over their competitors. This is a reason why design protection is important. Design protection plays an important role in preventing the authorised use of a firm’s designs by their competitors and the number of applications for design rights each year are high. Apart from a solution to the appropriation problem that design protection provides, firms may have other motivations for seeking its use. This study aims to understand financial motivations of having designs protected, and as such examines the relationship between design rights, profitability and performance of Swedish firms. Pooled OLS regression is applied to analyze the design and financial data from 1,735 Swedish firms from 2003 to 2016. It is shown that European and Swedish national design rights are negatively related to subsequent profitability of Swedish firms. However, for only European design rights, they do show a positive relationship with subsequent performance of Swedish firms.

Abstract:

Internationalisation is today part of every firm’s reality and impossible to deny. Researchers have developed several models and theories concerning this topic describing firms internationalisation in terms of innovation models, behavioural-, sequential-, and learning processes. However, there is a lack of export research for small firms that are practically oriented towards a specific market. Small firms often lack the resources and time to investigate new markets. We have seen an empirically driven need for research about entry strategies due to a request from a Swedish design company.

The Japanese economy is the second largest in the world with a population interested in consumer goods such as design products and services. During the last years, the fascination for western cultures, Swedish design and lifestyle has grown. Due to this, it is interesting for small Swedish design firms to examine the Japanese market.

The purpose of the thesis is to empirically examine small Swedish design firms’ internationalisation process to Japan. Appropriate export entry strategies will be evaluated in order to find suitable suggestions for other design firms with similar characteristics that wish to expand to Japan.

To fulfil this purpose, a qualitative method with an orientation towards induction was used. Primary data was gathered by interviews with five Swedish design firms with experiences from Japanese market penetration. To approach the Japanese market and entry strategies from another perspective, complementary information and interviews were conducted with for example the manager at Swedish Trade Council Japan, and the founder of the agent association Japan Porten.

Internationalisation theories, export entry strategies, and theory about the Japanese market have also been presented. As a result of the theory chapter, research questions rose concerning what international entry strategy this type of companies should use. What entry mode and distribution channels are most appropriate, how should the marketing plan be composed and what other things should to be considered before a Japanese market entry? A cross-analysis was then made contrasting and comparing theory and empirical data in order to reach conclusions.

The conclusion gives suggestions about what steps small Swedish design firms should take after they have decided to enter Japan. We have found evidence during this research process that suggests them to use a direct entry mode, contracting an agent or distributor. To get in contact with business partners, the companies can participate in trade fairs or events, promote themselves through magazines, and take help from the Swedish Trade Council. Products should be slightly adjusted to the Japanese market, especially in terms of physical size and packaging materials that has to be flawless and professional. The price can be set higher than in Sweden and the company should position themselves as high quality producers. Swedish design, originality, and handicraft tradition should be promoted. Further, the Japanese business culture has to be respected, where negotiation manners, honesty and politeness should be considered. The companies also have to bear in mind that things take time in Japan and it is important to develop personal life-lasting relationships.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Detta är en uppsats som analyserar tre nedslag tagna ur svensk designhistoria. Bakgrunden ligger i Sveriges varumärke, nation brand.

Abstract:
Brands are now more aware of the importance of implementing a mobile marketing strategy by employing a QR code campaign with the intent of enhancing brand awareness and strength the relationship with customers. Thus, an extensive research has been conducted on this subject with focus on the Swedish premium fashion market .The purpose of this research study is to analyze a new mobile marketing tool called Quick-response (QR) codes, and understand this phenomenon on the premiumfashion segment in Sweden, while relating at the same time with concepts such as customer relationship management and brand awareness. In this study a qualitative research method was chosen, by applying qualitative semi-structured interviews and qualitative content analysis. The research shows that there is a problem with customers' awareness regarding QR codes and its usage. Companies should also be educated for the importance of integrating a mobile marketing program within their marketing and communication strategy. Nonetheless, the study has shown that brands may increase brand awareness and drive CRM if all the requirements above stated are fulfilled, since all of the participants in this research acknowledge the relationship between a brand and its customers extremely important.

Abstract:
Users can assess the visual appeal of a web page within 50 milliseconds and color is the first thing noticed onscreen. That directly influences user perception of the website, and choosing appealing color combinations is therefore crucial for successful web design. Recent scientific research has identified which individual colors are culturally preferred in web design in different countries but there is no similar research on hue combinations. Currently no effective, scientifically based guidelines on combining hues for web designers exist either, since recent research by Ou et al and Szabo et al, among others, proves the classic color harmonies invalid. Therefore this study aims to identify guidelines for culturally appropriate hue combination in context of web design. The study is limited to culturally appropriate combining of hues in Thai and Swedish web design.

Abstract:
At first glance, the image of a map looks familiar to a graphic designer. It comprisescolours, shapes and typography. But beyond the graphical surface it hides a complex system of techniques and rules, like the clockwork behind a dial. This thesis tries toapproach and improve map production from a starting point in graphic design. Byaddressing visitor maps for nature reserves it aims to make nature more accessibleand appealing to a larger group of people. The main purpose of the thesis is to examine how Swedish nature reserve visitormaps can be improved with focus on relevance for their aims and use and how thisis communicated through the visual presentation. A secondary purpose is to examinehow to produce such maps in a rational way, using digital geographic informationsystems (GIS) and adopted working processes. The research was conducted using a combination of traditional methods and techniques combined with research through design activity. Methods and techniques were gathered from ethnography, action-research and usability-research and include literature studies, interviews, questionnaire surveys, participatory observation, action-research protocols, beta-testing and collection of samples. The design activity resulted in both free-standing sketches and map-sketches forthe Gotlandic nature reserves Langhammars and Stora Karlsö. Two processes and one descriptive structure were developed and described: a process to adopt visual representations of map-information to its contextual relevance, a process to produce nature reserve visitor maps, and a structure to present practical design work in a scientificcontext. Results also comprised collected answers, discussions and samples from questionnaire surveys, participatory observation, interviews and general research. The thesis concludes that it is fruitful to consider the visitor map as “a product made for use” and apply a usability-approach as it is rather an example of visual information than visual communication. Close research of both sender and users is also important to be ableto select, adapt and fine-tune the information in the map in relation to its aims and use.The digital possibilities that enables GIS to provide easy accessible and accurate data can produce efficient workflows in map design if combined with the graphic designers experience to develop and streamline design processes. The combination of modern technology, practical design work and research is profitable in both an analogue and digital context and makes visitor maps a contemporary and interesting area for both researchers and practitioners.

Abstract:
Abstract Technology and engineering might be characterized as becoming more knowledge-intensive. A huge amount of data is used and produced in most product development projects. Increasing competition requires shorter reaction time to customer demands and a higher level of innovation. Concurrent Engineering (CE) is a strategic response to competition. It has proved to be a powerful approach to integrating engineering activities in product development. However, integration and parallel activities, that is the essence of CE, add complexity to the process. Consequently, information management is recognized as a major component in many CE models. Product Data Management (PDM) systems are a class of computer based systems that address the need to manage product related information that is mainly formal and computer interpretable. PDM systems are sometimes referred to as CE enablers. Results from a resent survey of PDM implementation projects in six Swedish industrial companies, with products ranging from telecommunications systems to trucks and medical equipment, indicate the importance of also utilizing the Concurrent Engineering (CE) approach in the process of implementing an enterprise-wide PDM solution.
