Abstract:
Design history tends to focus on designers and design outcomes, primarily objects. In contrast, historical accounts and analyses of designing are rare. This paper argues for the need of design histories that also address the origins of our design methods with respect to contexts, values and ideas in order to understand what these actually bring to the contemporary design situation. To illustrate what such a historical approach to design methods might bring, we present a study on the origins of Scandinavian user-centered design. In particular, we discuss the Home Research Institute's (HFI) development of methods for investigating and reforming everyday life and domestic work in mid-1940s Sweden.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose building code changes that would benefit both architectural design and the potential of achieving nearly zero energy goals by analyzing the architectural implications of the energy system boundaries within the Swedish code. Design/methodology/approach – The analysis is driven by three questions that relate the national implementation of EU directive on nearly zero energy 2020 to the premises set out in the guidelines for revising the Swedish building code aiming at a performance-based regulation. A crucial part of the research is a comparative analysis of the design implications of the code to research findings in scientific articles on near-zero energy or low-energy design. Findings – The energy system boundaries in the Swedish code are steering the architectural design and energy consequences of offices towards using less heat but more electricity. The energy section is also limiting the architectural design choices by ignoring the positive energy aspects of daylight. A proposal of a new comprehensive energy section taking all architectural design related energy aspects into account is presented, in order to support design of nearly zero energy buildings. Practical implications – A building code that relates the energy system boundaries to form will help integrated design choices that are more likely to support the strive towards nearly zero energy buildings. Originality/value – The paper reveals the design implication of the Swedish energy section to be counterproductive regarding energy efficiency as well as limiting architectural design choices.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines the transfer of Swedish concepts of urban modernity to British cities after 1945. It shows how an affinity between design and architecture elites facilitated the transfer of key concepts that were mediated in cities. Moreover, it argues that the often contested transfer of Swedish modern architecture and design to northern English cities initially meshed with municipal ambitions to improve working-class housing and culture. Thereafter the influence of Swedish modern was continued in altered form by the preponderance of Swedish prefabrication techniques in the construction of new poured concrete and high-rise estates during the 1960s. These aspirations to improve the urban environment with Scandinavian examples of good living often magnified the difficulties of modernising the industrial conurbations of the north.

Abstract:
Objectives: The study investigates the significance of country of birth for hip fractures among the elderly in a Swedish urban setting. Design: Cross-sectional register-based study. Methods: All people aged 65 or above hospitalized because of hip fracture in Stockholm County over the years 1993—95 were identified in the County's Hospital Discharge Register. Information was obtained from Sweden's National Population Register on the countries of birth of the people affected (reference year: 1994). The foreign-born were grouped in two ways: according to the geographic location of their country of birth, and to the level of development of that country (as measured by the UN's Human Development Index). Age-standardized odds ratios were computed for men and women separately, with the Swedish-born elderly as reference group. Results: Many of the foreign-born groups registered significantly lower odds of hip fracture than their Swedish-born counterparts, regardless of whether countries of birth were grouped geographically or according to level of development. This applied to both men and women. Conclusions: As a whole, the Swedish elderly population has one of the highest prevalences of hip fracture in the world. When country of origin is accounted for, the foreign-born elderly are significantly less vulnerable than native Swedes. This contrasts remarkably with other health outcomes.

Abstract:
Abstract Objective SLE is known to have an aggressive phenotype in black populations, but data from African cohorts are largely lacking. We therefore compared immunological and clinical profiles between Sudanese and Swedish patients using similar tools. Methods Consecutive SLE patients from Sudan (n = 115) and Sweden (n = 340) and from 106 Sudanese and 318 Swedish age- and sex-matched controls were included. All patients fulfilled the 1982 ACR classification criteria for SLE. Ten ANA-associated specificities and C1q-binding immune complexes (CICs) were measured. Cut-offs were established based on Sudanese and Swedish controls, respectively. Disease activity was measured with a modified SLEDAI and organ damage with the SLICC Damage Index. In a nested case–control design, Swedish and Sudanese patients were matched for age and disease duration. Results Females constituted 95.6% and 88.1% of Sudanese and Swedish patients, respectively (P = 0.02), with younger age at inclusion (33 vs 47.7 years; P < 0.0001) and shorter disease duration (5 vs 14 years; P < 0.0001) among Sudanese patients. Anti-Sm antibodies were more frequent in Sudanese patients, whereas anti-dsDNA, anti-histone and CICs were higher in Swedish patients. In the matched analyses, there was a trend for higher SLEDAI among Swedes. However, Sudanese patients had more damage, solely attributed to high frequencies of cranial/peripheral neuropathy and diabetes. Conclusion While anti-Sm is more common in Sudan than in Sweden, the opposite is found for anti-dsDNA. Sudanese patients had higher damage scores, mainly because of neuropathy and diabetes. Sudanese patients were younger, with a shorter SLE duration, possibly indicating a more severe disease course with impact on survival rates.

Abstract:
<p>The main objective of this study was to provide a contribution to the entrepreneurship education field through evaluating and describing changes in students’ attitudes towards entrepreneurship. A pre-test and post-test design was used to evaluate a course design where sport psychology was the main topic with an embedded element of entrepreneurship education. The course was part of university program in Masters Programme in Sports Psychology or Physical Trainer Programme. Sport psychology-students are not the traditional group of students that are selected and trained to get both skills and a positive entrepreneur mindset. There were 39 students completing both the pre-test and post-test questionnaire (response rate 84.4%), mean age 23 years (SD=2.90). Both the pre- and post-test results showed that the sport psychology students had positive attitudes towards entrepreneurship, and the embedded course design have significant effect on students’ subjective perception of their ability to create and commercialize new ideas. The results from this case study shown that an embedded course design with sport psychology and entrepreneurial education make it possible to strengthen students’ entrepreneurial attitudes. The positive results point out that it is important to continue examine embedded coursed designs between entrepreneurial education and non-traditional areas (e.g., physiotherapists, dentists, architects, e.g.).</p>

Abstract:
Fashion and retail ought to be a happy marriage. Yet several entrepreneurs in the field of fashion speak of a climate that is difficult to penetrate because of economic and cultural factors. For example, the chain store concept is an expression of the specific and current fashion situation in Sweden: democratic fashion that is cheap and accessible. At the same time, customers now demand personal, unique and ethical fashions. However, there are few possibilities in this climate for low cost development in progressive Swedish design. This article addresses the questions of how special trade conditions are reflected in the relationship between fashion and retail, and how different interests and values are expressed in the culture of Swedish fashion. To gain a deeper understanding of diverse working conditions and strategies, this article analyzes the culture of the Swedish fashion business as a narrative of different social and cultural processes. A conclusion drawn is that a cultural perspective on the oppositions between different practices and logics in the fashion business may contribute to mapping and managing these oppositions.

Abstract:
[full article and abstract in English] The aim of this study is to compare Lithuanian and Swedish pension systems from the point of view of their design and performance in order to elaborate reasonable recommendations to Lithuanian pension policy based on the best Swedish experience. Swedish income, premium and guaranteed old-age pensions system are compared with the analogous Lithuanian system of the “first,” “second” pillars and the “social” pensions. The main features of the systems are discussed, and the performance of the systems, mainly from the point of view of adequacy, is compared. The differences in system design and performance are identified, and the possible reasons of these differences are examined. Special attention is paid to differences in financing and the approach to the definition of benefits. The Lithuanian pension points approach is compared to the Swedish Notional Defined Contribution (NDC) approach. Each system is analyzed, and the relevance of transforming the Lithuanian first pillar pensions into a NDC system is examined.

Abstract:
Purpose Defence supply chains (SCs) aim at operational outcomes, and armed forces depend on them to provide availability and preparedness in peace and sustainability in war. Previous research has focussed on strategies for SCs aiming at financial outcomes. This raises the question of how suitable commercial supply chain strategies (SCSs) are for supply chain design (SCD) in defence. The purpose of this paper is to explain the constructs of SCSs that satisfy military operational requirements and to propose SCSs that are appropriate in defence. Design/methodology/approach This paper reports on a Delphi study with 20 experts from Swedish defence authorities. Through three Delphi rounds, two workshops and a validation round, these experts contributed to the reported findings. Findings The findings demonstrate that commercial SC constructs are acceptable and applicable in defence but not sufficient. An additional strategy is required to satisfy requirements on availability, preparedness and sustainability. The paper shows that different requirements in peace and war make it challenging to design suitable defence SCs and proposes eight SCSs that satisfy these requirements. Research limitations/implications The results emanate from the Swedish defence context and further research is required for generalisation. Originality/value This paper extends theory by investigating SCs aiming at operational outcomes. For managers in companies and defence authorities, it explicates how the unique issues in defence must influence SCD to satisfy operational requirements.

Abstract In recent literature on survey nonresponse, new indicators of the quality of the data collection have been proposed. These include indicators of balance and representativity (of the set of respondents) and distance (between respondents and nonrespondents), computed on available auxiliary variables. We use such indicators in conjunction with paradata from the Swedish CATI system to examine the inflow of data (as a function of the call attempt number) for the 2009 Swedish Living Conditions Survey (LCS). We then use the LCS 2009 data file to conduct several “experiments in retrospect”. They consist in interventions, at suitable chosen points and driven by the prospects of improved balance and reduced distance. The survey estimates computed on the resulting final response set are likely to be less biased. Cost savings realized by fewer calls can be redirected to enhance quality of other aspects of the survey design.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to assess innovation in the hotel sector in Sweden and to investigate how structural and organizational factors influence hotel’s likelihood of producing service/product, process, organizational and marketing innovations.Design/methodology/approachThis paper is based on responses from 174 hotels with membership in the Swedish hotel association. Responses were collected via a web-based survey.FindingsThis paper provides insights about the nature and extent of innovations in the hotel sector. Although traditionally considered rigid and non-innovative, around half of the responding hotels produced at least one type of innovation. Most common are service/product and marketing innovations. A hotel’s likelihood of innovating depends largely on structural independence (non-chain), having an explicit innovation strategy and investing in non-traditional R&D.Research limitations/implicationsBecause of the chosen design (convenience sampling), the results of this paper may lack generalizability. Therefore, future research is encouraged to test the hypotheses further.Practical implicationsManagers in the hospitality industry can influence the production of innovations in the hotel sector. By promoting flexibility, defining and communicating an innovation strategy, and engaging in non-traditional R&D activities, practitioners can better respond to the changing business environment.Originality/valueThis paper presents a systematic, and internationally recognized, method for assessing four types of innovation in the hotel sector. Its originality stems also from its approach to investigating how key structural and organizational factors, when considered in the same analysis, predict service/product, process, organizational and marketing innovations.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to contribute to the debate concerning the asserted end of the globalization process. Design/methodology/approach This paper is a description of the evolution of all Swedish MNEs, the 50 largest companies and the ten truly global MNEs, building on data compiled by the authors, mainly from annual reports. Findings The largest Swedish MNEs have continued to globalize and have at the same time improved their financial performance during the period of study, 2010-2016. Practical implications The proposition that multinationals are heading home cannot be confirmed in the Swedish case. There is therefore a need to compare Swedish experiences with other national examples to better generalize the findings. Social implications The political decisions regarding external trade and foreign direct investment should support continuous liberalization and facilitation of cross-border economic interaction. Originality/value As Swedish MNEs are more globalized than the average in advanced economies, this study offers insight into the contemporary internationalization process.

Sweden reacted to the oil crises of the 1970s by initiating a comprehensive programme of research into, and development of, alternative energy sources. One of the problem areas in this connection is that of energy storage. This paper describes documented Swedish experience of seasonal thermal energy stores, concerned with such aspects as heat balances, heat losses, water sealing, stratification and temperature fields in heat stores and their surroundings. The paper concludes with mention of a number of design guidelines developed from Swedish R&D experience.

Abstract:
Hypertension can be defined as a persistent blood pressure where the systolic pressure is above 140 mmHg and the diastolic pressure is above 90 mmHg. One of the changes that occurs is the increased blood pressure caused by increased resistance of the peripheral blood vessels, normal systolic approximately 170 mmHg and normal diastolic approximately 90 mmHg. Swedish Massage to lower blood pressure in hypertensive patients Swedish massage is a massage technique that focuses on relaxation and improves blood circulation by engaging the muscles. the use of massage by nurses has the potential to significantly improve health status. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Swedish massage on reducing blood pressure in hypertensive patients in the inpatient room of An-Nisa Hospital, Tangerang in 2020. The research method used in this study was a quasi experimental design: one group pre test and post test design. The population in this study amounted to 60 respondents. The technique used for data collection is accidental sampling. Results: Based on the t-paired test that p-value <0.05, it can be stated that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted, meaning that there is an effect between Swedish massage on reducing blood pressure in hypertensive patients in the inpatient room of An-Nisa Hospital, Tangerang, 2020. Conclusion : there is an effect of Swedish massage on reducing blood pressure in hypertensive patients in the inpatient room of An-Nisa Hospital, Tangerang, 2020.

Abstract:
Abstract Globalization and internationalization of higher education around the world is “forcing” many universities and colleges from non-English speaking countries to offer a significant part of their educational programs in English. The main motivation to do so is partly to successfully implement student exchange programs such as the European Erasmus Program, and partly to attract “fee-paying free-moving” students from abroad. A third long-term reason to teach in English is to educate young pre-professionals for the global market. However, the adaptation of technical courses from national languages to English cannot be done overnight. On the contrary, this process demands time-consuming preparations that typically involve the expansion of background references and careful planning. In addition, the English skills of course instructors must assure the effective transmission of information, and very often professors face certain difficulties and uncomfortable limitations. Generally speaking, instructing in a foreign language results in less “colourful” expressions. Recent investigations conducted in Sweden on higher education show that teaching efficiency is inferior for courses taught in English when compared with the same courses given in Swedish. This paper deals with various experiences related to the process of changing the language of instruction from Swedish to English in three Machine Design courses taught at Linnaeus University.

Abstract:
Objective. The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate and compare the effects of reflexology and Swedish massage therapy on physiologic stress, pain, and mood in older cancer survivors residing in nursing homes.Methods. An experimental, repeated-measures, crossover design study of 18 nursing home residents aged 75 or over and diagnosed with solid tumor in the past 5 years and following completion of cancer treatments. The intervention tested was 20 minutes of Swedish Massage Therapy to the lower extremities, versus 20 minute Reflexology, using highly specified protocols. Pre- and post-intervention levels of salivary cortisol, observed affect, and pain were compared in the Swedish Massage Therapy and Reflexology conditions.Results. Both Reflexology and Swedish Massage resulted in significant declines in salivary cortisol and pain and improvements in mood.Conclusions. Preliminary data suggest that studies of Swedish Massage Therapy and Reflexology are feasible in this population of cancer survivors typically excluded from trials. Both interventions were well tolerated and produced measurable improvements in outcomes. Further research is needed to explore the mechanisms underlying the potential benefits of these CAM modalities in this patient population.

Abstract:
Proposed guidelines for the computation of spillway design floods in Sweden are described. The guidelines are based on the transformation of extreme hydrological conditions to floods by use of conceptual hydrological models. Floods computed according to the guidelines are compared to observations for both autumn conditions when rainfall dominates and for snowmelt conditions in spring. The highest floods are in the order of 60% of the proposed guidelines. Comparisons with frequency analysis show that the computed floods are well beyond the 10,000 year flood according to the Gumbel and Lognormal 2 distribution functions, while the results according to Lognormal 3 are more uncertain.
