Mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) are recognized around the world as diverse and ecologically important habitats. In the northern Gulf of Mexico (GoMx), MCEs are rocky reefs with abundant black corals and octocorals, including the species Swiftia exserta. Surveys following the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill in 2010 revealed significant injury to these and other species, the restoration of which requires an in-depth understanding of the biology, ecology, and genetic diversity of each species. To support a larger population connectivity study of impacted octocorals in the GoMx, this study co

Exploration of the deep sea off the Pacific margin of Costa Rica has resulted in the discovery of a number of new species and reports for the region. Here, we report on the occurrence of the octocoral genus Swiftia, and describe a new species collected by the Alvin submersible off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The new species has been observed at around 1000 m depth, growing on authigenic carbonates near methane seeps. Swiftia sahlingi sp. nov. is characterised by having bright red colonies that are with limited branching, with slightly raised polyp-mounds, thin coenenchyme mainly composed

The immune systems of cnidaria are important to study for two reasons: to gain a better understanding of the evolution of immune responses, and to provide a basis to partially redress the precipitous world-wide die-offs of reef corals, some of which have been attributed to diseases and stress. Many immune responses share ancient evolutionary origins and are common across many taxa. Using Swiftia exserta, an azooxanthellate ahermatypic local octocoral, as a proxy model organism to study aspects of innate immunity in corals and cnidaria allows us to address both of the reasons listed above while

This thesis provides an analysis of Jonathan Swift’s and George Orwell’s satire, by bringing out different and similar features of their prose. Gulliver’s Travels is a masterpiece, showing a gorgeous world of imaginative characters and landscapes, but also a ferocious satire that always vexes the reader. Significantly, in his essay Politics vs. Literature: An Examination of Gulliver Travels, Orwell makes a list of six books that should be always preserved, and puts Gulliver’s Travels among them. The 1720s was a decade of crisis in Ireland. Jonathan Swift's occasional writings from these years extend the country's political and economic crises into dramas of personal and national identity. Part One of this thesis investigates the material conditions of the relationship between Swift, his Irish audience, and the underlying problems of identity that such an audience simultaneously poses and occludes. Part Two is an anatomy of the literary modes through which that relationship is figured. The first chapter offers the 1720 Declaratory Act as an important subtext for Swift's 'inaugural' wor

The general tendency in modern hardware is an increase in fault rates, which is caused by the decreased operation voltages and feature sizes. Previously, the issue of hardware faults was mainly approached only in high-availability enterprise servers and in safety-critical applications, such as transport or aerospace domains. These fields generally have very tight requirements, but also higher budgets. However, as fault rates are increasing, fault tolerance solutions are starting to be also required in applications that have much smaller profit margins. This brings to the front the idea of soft

Over time the level of abstraction embodied in programming languages has continued to grow. However, most programming languages still require programmers to conform to rigid constructs. These constructs have been implemented in the name of efficiency for the computer. The continual increase in computing power allows us to consider techniques not so limited. To this end, we have created CABERNET, a Controlled Natural Language (CNL) based approach to program creation. CABERNET allows programmers to use an outline-based syntax.
