Full textThe purpose of this report is to provide insight on how and why we should include more cultural and historical context in a collegiate jazz education. The entry of jazz into academia raises a philosophical dilemma, as it represents an intersection of two contrasting cultures with different governing principles and cultural aesthetics. With the inclusion of jazz into academic institutions, it is possible that the cultural context and integrity of jazz has been marginalized. My aim for this report is to offer general recommendations to the field of jazz pedagogy with the ultimate purpose of better serving the music and the musicians who study it.

"Biological control potential of the spotted stem borer Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) with the entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae." Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Biological control studies were conducted with isolates of entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana and Metarrhizium anisopliae from Ethiopia and South Africa against the spotted stem borer Chilo partellus. The study was conducted from April 2002 to April 2003, at the department of Entomology and Nematology, University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. The objectives were to screen these isolates for pathogenicity and to determine the susceptibility of different larval instars; to study the effect of temperature on fungal development and virulence; to investigate food consumption of fungus treated larvae; to determine compatibility of fungal isolates with insecticides; to study the effect of exposure methods and diets on larval mortality; and to evaluate promising isolates under greenhouse conditions using artificially infested maize plants. Four isolates of B. bassiana and six isolates of M. anisopliae were tested against second instar larvae. Of these isolates, B. bassiana (BB-01) and M. anisopliae (PPRC-4, PPRC-19, PPRC-61 and EE-01) were found to be highly pathogenic inducing 90 to 100 % mortality seven days after treatment. In subsequent assays, the fungal isolates were tested against third, fourth, fifth and sixth instar larvae. Second and sixth instar larvae were more susceptible to these isolates than third, fourth and fifth instar larvae. Conidial germination, radial growth and sporulation of the isolates PPRC-4, PPRC-19, PPRC-61, EE-01 and BB-01 were retarded at 15 and 35 0C. A suitable temperature range for the isolates was from 20 - 30 0C. At 25 and 30 0C the isolates induced 100 % mortality to second instar larvae within four to six days. Second and third instar C. partellus larvae were treated with the isolates PPRC-4 and BB-01, and daily consumption of maize leaf was measured. Treatment with the fungi was associated with a reduction in mean daily food consumption. In in-vitro studies, five concentrations (0.1 ppm, 1 ppm, 5 ppm, 10 ppm, and 100 ppm active ingredients) of the insecticides benfuracarb and endosulfan were tested with the isolates PPRC-4, PPRC-19, PPRC-16, EE-01 and BB-01. Increasing the concentration of the insecticides adversely affected germination, radial growth and sporulation of the isolates. In in-vivo studies combining the fungi, PPRC-4 and BB-01,with low concentrations (1 and 5 ppm a.i.), of the insecticides increased the mortality of third instar larvae from 65 to 100 %. Larvae sprayed directly with conidia, exposed to conidia treated leaves and dipped into conidial suspensions suffered high mortality of 98 to 100 %. Larvae exposed to treated leaves and larvae sprayed directly with conidia produced high numbers mycoses in cadavers. Exposure of larvae to treated leaves yielded high sporulation. At a low conidial concentration (1.25x107 conidia/ml), mycosis and sporulation were high. The optimum temperature was 20 0C for mycosis and 15 0C for sporulation. In greenhouse trails, a conidial suspension of 2 x 108 conidia/ml of the pathogenic isolates was sprayed on 3 to 4 week-old maize plants infested with 20 second instar larvae per plant. This resulted in suppression of foliar damage. Treatment with the fungi also reduced stem tunneling and deadheart. In addition, fungal treatment increased mean plant fresh and dry biomass compared to untreated control plants. In general, results from laboratory and greenhouse studies indicated that there was good potential for the use of these fungal isolates for controlling C. partellus larvae.

Full textThe present work analyzes the crime of granting a simulated contract to the detriment of another, foreseen and sanctioned in art. 251.3 CP. Because of the dispersion of doctrinal tendencies and up to a certain judicial point in force up to the present, the concept of simulated contract is investigated, assuming that its content and meaning must be taken from civil law, that is, as an extra criminal category. In this context, it explains the origin, forms that it adopts and legal consequences of the simulation in private law, its most relevant classifications or types, as well as the different schools that have developed the effects of this negotiation phenomenon. Then, it has been used the reliable history of the establishment of such a precept, in order to try to clarify if it is a crime that constitutes a genuine exclusively Hispanic criminal figure and that appears, for the first time, in the first Penal Code of 1848. Then, a certain concept of a differentiated contract document is proposed, which allows explaining the group of cases by which an agent, who simulates one, can harm another, a concept differentiated from that of a third party. At this point arises the need to distinguish falsehood of simulation, and in particular, to abound about the effect of the defacement of ideological falsehoods committed by private individual in the 1995 Criminal Code, and try to answer if it did not empty of content to this crime, in particular. Once the objective type of crime has been defined, its insolvency relations are established with falsehood, misappropriation, the raising of assets, and mainly, with the unfair administration of the alien patrimony of art. 252 CP.
252 CP.

Prey often use conspicuous, or aposematic coloration to advertise their unprofitability to potential predators. Besides coloration, other characteristics, such as marking patterns or appearance (body shape), can be used in prey recognition by predators. In the present study, I modified the number, size, colour of spots, and body patterns (stripes, circles and mesh) of markings Pachyrhynchus tobafolius and their shapes (cut off a fore wing of cricket, and attached to the elytra of weevils) to test how the Japalura swinhonis recognize the weevils as an unpalatable prey, and which character is critical for lizards’ cognition. Unchanged weevils had lower attacking rates, but prey with manipulated shapes were attacked more often than the other modified weevils. Similarity, attack latencies to the manipulated shapes were significantly shorter than the other modified weevils. Current study suggest that the appearance of prey is the vital signal for visual predators to recognize unpalatable prey.

The Swinhoe‘s pheasant (Lophura swinhoii), which is a near-threatened species in the IUCN Red List indigenous to Taiwan, belongs to the family Phasianidae in the order Galliformes. This pheasant provides an opportunity to realize evolutionary processes following geographic isolation and the Lophura genus could be a good model to investigate adaptive evolution because of their diversified habitats in Asia. Currently, rapid development of next-generation sequencing technology provides an opportunity to get wealth of information from animal genomes. Furthermore, the whole-genome sequencing is a critical foundation for genomic research. In this study, we sequenced high quality Swinhoe''s pheasant genome, which is the first whole-genome assembly among the all twelve gallopheasants (Lophura genus), by integrating sequencing data from Illumina short reads and 10x Genomics linked-reads. Paired-end reads were used to assemble contigs, whereas mate pair and 10x Genomics reads were used for scaffolding. The draft genome contained 1.05 Gb of DNA, 15.3 Mb N50 length and over 90% of complete genes were evaluated by the BUSCO benchmark. The 16,442 predicted genes were identified in the genome. Of these genes, 15,687 were annotated as protein-coding genes. The mitochondrial genome was sequenced and assembled as well as the major histocompatibility complex B-locus (MHC-B) genes were annotated and curated. Compared with other avian genomes, the Swinhoe''s pheasant diverged from the Mikado pheasant (Syrmaticus mikado) approximately 11.6 million years ago. Besides, we annotated and analyzed the size changes of gene families among the Swinhoe''s pheasant, Mikado pheasant, and their common ancestor. The results indicated that the gene families related to fructose and mannose metabolism showed significant expansion in the Swinhoe''s pheasant genome. Conversely, the gene families related to immune system and response to bacterium showed significant contraction. In addition, analyzing the positive selection genes in evolution differences of Swinhoe''s pheasant found that the gene families related to morphogenesis were identified. In conclusion, this study provided a valuable genomic resource for the Swinhoe''s pheasant and revealed insights into the unique evolutionary characteristics from its genome.

Deer velvet has been a kind of traditional medicine which can strengthening the body. The purpose of this master thesis is to investigate the effects of the Formosan Sambar deer (Cervus unicolor Swinhoi) velvet extracts on gonadal development and the ability of testosterone secretion under the oxidative stress in vitro in the male ICR mice. The velvet were obtained from 4 3~5-year-old Formosan Sambar deer stags at 75 days after casting. One side of the velvet was divided into four sections (tip, upper, middle, and base) for phosphate buffer solution (PBS) and 20% ethanol extracts in fresh, the other side was preserved in -20℃ for 3 month in vacuum package for further extraction using the above-mentioned method. All the velvet extract samples were stored in -80℃ for the gonadal steroids (testosterone, progesterone, and estradiol) assay (Study 1), testing the effects on development of the reproductive organ and hormonal function (Study 2), and the semen quality (Study 3). It is showed that the PBS extracts contained estradiol higher than that in the 20% ethanol extracts, and the testosterone and progesterone contents in the 20% ethanol extracts, were higher significantly than that in the PBS extracts in the Formosan samber deer velvet, no matter what divided section or storage method (Study 1). Orally or injection administration of the Formosa sambar deer velvet PBS or 20% ethanol extracts to the male ICR mice in growth stage (weaned to puberty) benefited the reproductive organ development and serum testosterone concentration (Study 2), and the semen quality (Study 3).

This study was aimed to investigate the contents/activities of antioxidant enzymes included superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) for evaluating the quality of the velvet obtained from Formosan sambar deer (experiment I), and the effect of crude protein level in total mixed ration (TMR) on velvet production (experiment II). It is showed that among eight pairs of velvet harvested from Formosan sambar stags (aged 5-10 y, growth periods 63-81 d after casting of the antler), the weight of deer velvet and the velvet growth period (days) was highly related (P < 0.01). The shear force value (16.5-40.0 kg/cm2), lightness(L*, 40.9-36.4) and Ca2+ concentration(2.63-8.80%) were significantly different (P < 0.05) among the section upper, middle and base of the velvet. The contents of SOD, CAT and GPX from upper to base were 3.91-1.50, 2.53-0.90 and 3.95-1.58 mg/mL, respectively. The upper section was most rich in these three essential enzymes (P < 0.05). Also, the upper section was most abundant in the activity of SOD (60.20, 21.11 and 16.97 U/mL, respectively) and the activity of per mg unit of SOD protein (14.97, 9.45 and 9.94 U/mg protein), by comparing the SOD activities among the sections. However, the relationship between antioxidant enzyme of SOD, CAT and GPX with the weight, and the growth period (days) of the velvet were not significant (P > 0.05). The contents and activity of SOD to the Ca2+ concentration, as so as the activity of per mg unit of SOD protein to the shear force value was both in the significantly opposite relation (P < 0.01). (experiment I). When the current TMR used in deer farm contained 13% crude protein in dry matter (CPDM) was designed for the control group, and the treatment groups contained 15 and 11 %CPDM respectively (n=7 in each group), and the ration and fresh water were fed ad libitum to Formosan sambar stags, aged 5-8 y, body condition score (BCS) 3-4, and velvet production 1.9-3.0 kg last year. Results showed that the velvet production (3.01-3.50 kg) was not significantly affected by the CPDM concentrations designed in this experiment (P > 0.05). Also, the daily ration intake (8.44-9.24 kg), and BCS (3.20-3.63) were not clearly different among the CPDM% groups (P > 0.05), although the 15 %CPDM group presented slightly better velvet production (avg. 3.50 kg), that were +10 and +16 % compared to 13 and 11 %CPDM groups, respectively (experiment II). It is concluded that the lower ossification, more whiteness and tenderness, and the higher content of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT and GPX), also the higher activity of SOD in the upper section of velvet. It is expected that the higher CPDM could get higher velvet production. The results in this study could be indicated to appraise the quality of deer velvet, and for the adjusting of velvet production in the Formosan sambar deer.
Duke, Zachariah P. "A critical analysis of a theology of disability in the Australian Catholic Church: a qualitative study into contemporary inclusionary practices." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1959.13/1308110.
Full textThis thesis examines the role of the Australian Catholic Church, its leaders and its relevant agencies and organisations in advocating for and welcoming people living with a disability into the life of the Church. It is intended that this thesis will go beyond issues of accessibility and definitions of “disability” and instead explore developments and tensions in the Australian Catholic Church’s response to issues of disability. It is clear from the literature and the qualitative interviews examined throughout this thesis that, at the rhetorical level, the Australian Catholic Church accepts, welcomes and advocates for all people regardless of their intellectual or physical abilities. This inquiry seeks to investigate the relationship between this rhetoric and actual substantive efforts towards inclusion of people living with a disability. It finds, based on the lack of substantive evidence revealing actual inclusionary practices, that there is a significant contradiction between the policy rhetoric and practice. To this end, it will be argued that the Australian Catholic Church is not engaged in sufficient practical action to foster and support communities to genuinely welcome people living with a disability and to enhance their sense of belonging to such communities. While acknowledging some good work being conducted by individual Church agencies, based on the evidence accrued from the qualitative data gathered for this thesis, it is the contention of the researcher that there are few tangible, consistent or concrete strategies or actions towards inclusion and genuine belonging that one can point to in day-to-day practice in the Catholic Church community. It is a central concern of this research to open up a conversation, dialogue and debate that might bridge the gulf between the policy rhetoric and practice, and so foster more positive inclusionary approaches and substantive change in this area of Catholic Church life.

Full textThis dissertation intends to analyze the relationship between the crimes of slavery, human trafficking and swindle related to work or employment, as well as to answer the practical problem of delimiting the scope of these crimes, when labour exploitation contexts are at stake. To this end, based on a doctrinal and jurisprudential investigation, this study begins with the presentation of a global view on the evolution of each of the aforementioned incriminations and the legal assets they protect, seeking, subsequently, to characterize the concept of “labour exploitation”, to understand in what situations this type of exploitation can be configured as “slavery”, to distinguish the crimes of slavery and of human trafficking for the purpose of labour exploitation, to analyze the relationship between the crimes of slavery and of human trafficking for the purposes of slavery and, finally, to answer the question of whether, today, it is necessary to maintain the crime of swindle related to work or employment in the portuguese Penal Code.
