Abstract:
Taking the high⁃voltage disconnector of the GW46 type as research object, this research first use Solidworks to build its three-dimensional simplified model, then use ABAQUS to simulate the mechanical characteristics of the disconnector over a wide temperature range, analyzing the influence of the clamping force between the dynamic and static contacts on temperature, the contact pressure between the dynamic and static contacts of the high⁃voltage disconnector of the GW46 type increases with the ambient temperature, and the contact pressure becomes smaller. Compared simulation results with experimental data, the error is less than 5%. Analysis shows that using the ABAQUS to simulation analysis of temperature rise of the high⁃voltage disconnector of the GW46 type, it can be determined that the contact pressure between the dynamic and static contacts changes with temperature. It avoids the complexity of the traditional theoretical calculation of query parameters and tedious calculations, and provides strong reference evidence for improving the reliability of the high⁃voltage disconnector of the GW46 type.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on the analysis of the stability of the GW17 high-voltage disconnecting switch drive system. Firstly, the optimization model of the disconnector is established, and the simulation analysis is carried out by ADAMS (Automatic Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical Systems) and the simulation results are verified by experiments. Afterwards, ADAMS optimization design and particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) are used to optimize the drive system of the disconnector, and the results are verified on the experimental platform. After optimization, the space rod is reduced by 15 mm, the minimum corner angle of the lower conductive rod is reduced by 71.0%, the minimum folding arm angle is reduced by 88.7% and the maximum force of the ball pair is reduced by 35.7%, which realizes the lightweight of the rod, reduces the wear of the ball pair, and improves the stability of the equipment operation.

Abstract:
Abstract Gas insulated disconnector switches (DSs) are employed in a gas insulated substation (GIS) to interrupt and to make capacitive currents, in principle. During switching of capacitive currents very fast transient over-voltages (VFTOs) are common to DS. Intense VFTOs may result in peak voltage close to basic insulation level (BIL) of the connected equipment, leading to progressive deterioration and secondary breakdowns in very high voltage gas-insulated systems. At the same time, arcing during switching of bus transfer currents, by the DS, is considered as a source of substantial amount of decomposed products. This contamination may result in significant reduction in insulation strength of the medium. In order to ensure reliability of the design, it is essential to establish the DS for bus charging and bus transfer current duties under most onerous service conditions through suitable tests. The optimal design of DS to meet these test duties is established with suitable analytical techniques. The tests, which have been discussed and analyzed as part of this study, were performed on an indigenously developed 145 kV gas insulated DS as per IEC 62271-102. A detailed arrangement of the DS (main and auxiliary) and guidelines for conducting the above tests are also explained. Different performance parameters like arcing time, pre-arcing time, secondary discharges, trapped voltages, and level of contamination are analyzed. The behavior of DS during these evaluations is also reported in the present paper. Finally, the effect of different design parameters on performance of the DS has been analyzed.

The paper demonstrates the substructuring concept in seismic qualification testing of 550 kV electrical substation disconnect switches. In this study, the full and substructured (i.e., without support structure) switches are tested on a six degrees of freedom (DOFs) shaking table. Different combinations of translational and rotational excitations are obtained from full switch tests and used in the substructured ones. The behavior of the post insulators of the switches are compared to demonstrate validity and identify limitations of the substructuring concept applied to electrical substation equipment. From this comparison, critical DOFs for the response of post insulators in switches supported on flexible structures are identified. It is concluded that the in-plane and out-of-plane behavior of the investigated post insulators are uncoupled. The substructured tests driven by combined translational and rotational signals showed the best match with the full switch tests because the out-of-plane rotations contribute significantly to the response of the post insulators.

Abstract:
Electric utility switching stations and substations in the U.S. typically have hundreds of disconnect switches in outdoor yards that are manually closed and opened. For safety reasons, these switches are usually located at least 10 ft above the ground and require specialized methods to open and close the switch. The most common manual method to open or close a disconnect switch is through the use of an insulated pole that ranges from 6 to 20 ft long. Due to the shear number of required independent tasks (workers may have to open or close 100 disconnect within 30 min), the manual opening and closing of disconnect switches is physically demanding and presents risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), particularly to the upper extremities. The purpose of this study was to model the hand push force exerted by the worker on the insulated pole to close a disconnect switch. A force gauge was attached to the end of the insulated stick while a worker closed a switch. An average of 510 lbs of peak reaction force was measured when the switch was closed. Digital video revealed the average time interval for the worker to push the stick was 210 ms, from the time the motion was started to the time the switch was completely closed. Modeling in Siemens NX6.0 with ADAMS showed that a constant input force of 24 lbs on the stick was required by the worker to generate a peak reaction force of 510 lbs. Because most of the peak reaction force is transmitted to the upper extremities of the worker, these tasks expose the workers to MSDs. This type of dynamic analysis can be applied to many tasks that require a worker to use motion to exert a high peak reaction force. Furthermore, this method can enable researchers to assess the forces applied by a worker throughout the duration of a task, rather than just at the endpoint, which may provide more insight into which part(s) of a task present the greater risk of MSDs.

Electrical substations and vital components, e.g., disconnect switches, experienced severe damage that caused blackouts during past earthquakes. To improve the seismic resiliency of power grids and use probabilistic decision-making frameworks, comprehensive fragility data for the different substation equipment are needed. The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic performance of and develop component and system fragility curves for a critical substation component: disconnect switches. The seismic vulnerability of two common switch types was evaluated and two operational configurations were considered. Detailed nonlinear finite element models for the full switches were calibrated using previous experimental data and used to conduct incremental dynamic analysis and carry out the fragility assessment. A total of 160 triaxial ground motions representing four sets of different ground motion characteristics were used. The switches’ fragility curves were developed and presented to be readily used for new substation design, prioritizing retrofit/maintenance activities and reliability assessment of power grids.

Abstract:
One of the biggest impacts of the vision ‘Internet of Things’ is the massive number of connected devices, where billions of nodes will exchange data, information and commands. While wireless systems offer advantages such as increased flexibility, they also introduce one major challenge: how to power each individual node. In many cases, there is no way around the use of batteries. To minimize the environmental impact, increasing the battery’s longevity is the most important factor. This paper introduces a wireless battery-assisted node that has a drastically reduced energy consumption in the standby mode. The state (on/off) will be changed by harvesting a radiofrequency signal. A latching switch connects or disconnects the load—for example, a microcontroller—and the battery. The switch is connected to a charge pump which converts an AC (alternating current) signal into a usable DC (direct current) control signal. An antenna is mounted to the charge pump via a matching network. An electromagnetic wave is emitted by a remote control switch that switches the system on and off. The used frequency is 868 MHz and therefore in the UHF RFID (ultra high frequency radio frequency identification) band. The measurement results show that the wireless node consumes less than 16 nW in the standby mode. The remote controlling is possible from a distance of more than 12 m . The presented system can be integrated in further work on a UHF RFID tag. Thus, the existing protocol standard can be used to identify the object to be switched. By custom commands, the switching request can be transmitted from the remote control (UHF RFID reader) to the switching node.

Abstract:
The thesis deals with the design of a transformer station for the outgoing power of cogeneration unit with an electric capacity of up to 1 MW. The thesis describes the design procedure of individual devices such as a transformer with a nominal ratio 22/0,4 kV, high voltage switchgears and low voltage switchgears. With the proper selection of the transformer, along with the technical parameters, the economic benefits that come from its purchasing and operating costs with the transformer operation are also considered. Based on this, the economic comparison of selected types of oil transformers during 20 years is also developed. Another part of the thesis deals with HV and LV switchgears, which are dimensioned according to shortcircuit conditions in the transformer station. In conclusion this work deals with the grounding of a transformer station and design protection in accordance PPDS.

This master thesis is focused on the design of earthing switch for the indoor three pole generator disconnector from IVEP, a.s. The main task of the theoretical part of the master thesis was mechanical and electrical calculations on the contact system and the design of two variants of earthing switch construction. It has been proposed two variants of earthing switch construction. The first variant included three earthing knives for each pole of earthing switch and the other variant included two earthing knives for each pole. The aim of the practical part of this diploma thesis was to create a model of the earthing switch for generator disconnector, to simulate the heating of the contact system by passing the short-circuit current and to prepare the production documentation. For modeling, calculations and simulations were used Autodesk Inventor 2018, Matlab and Ansys Workbench.

Abstract:
This thesis concerns monitoring in Middle- and Low-Voltage distribution systems penetrated by distributed generation. Monitoring itself means measuring voltages and power flows and sending relevant data to the supervisory system. The first part of the thesis describes distribution systems with differences between individual voltage levels. The following chapter is focused on consequences of high share of renewable energy sources in distribution systems. Most of the problems are partially resolved by technical conditions for connection of the new power sources. However, difficulties with voltage regulation and uncontrolled power flows to higher voltage levels remain. These are the reasons for measuring voltages and currents in medium voltage networks. Second to last subhead of this chapter is dedicated to possible benefits of monitoring. The fourth part of the thesis deals with voltage and current sensors with their advantages and disadvantages. The best suitable devices are chosen in the end of the chapter. It is crucial to mention that sensors are only part of measuring system. Analog outputs from current or voltage transformers need to be converted to digital signal and further processed. After that required quantities are finally sent. Properties of these circuit cards are described in the sixth chapter. Following part aims to define a certain key that will determine the suitable locations for installation of the measurement. The final part of the thesis compares measured voltages and power flows from real 22 kV network with calculated values from computer program PAS DAISY Bizon.

Machines such as counters, computers, and Colossus process information. Items of information are given a physical identity which can be recognised and transmitted over distance. The identity is transmitted by what is called a signal and the relationship between the signals and the information they represent is called a code (as distinct from a cipher). Certain types of numbers are commonly used to identify items of information, because they are universally known and endless in quantity: the information, processors, and processing are then said to be digital. Processing consists of logical operations carried out serially on the numbers until a conclusion has been reached, expressed in numbers which can be converted to information by the code. Automatic number processors may be wholly or in part mechanical, electromechanical, or electronic. For the present purpose, electromechanical operation is the easiest to describe and to understand and so will be used as the starting point of this exposition. Electromechanical processors comprise electrical circuits consisting of switches interconnected by wire conductors. A switch is a device which can be set into one of two states, the unoperated or OFF state and the operated or ON state. The earliest switches used movable metal elements called contacts which could be pressed together to connect, or separated to disconnect, two wires that were attached to the contacts. Some metal contact switches used electric motors to operate them. All switches are stable in their OFF states. In their ON states, they may be stable only so long as the operating force is maintained. When this force is removed, they may remain in the ON state or revert to the OFF state. An electric light switch is an example of a manually operated switch which is stable in both the OFF and the ON states. A bell ‘push-button to ring’ switch reverts to the OFF state when the operating force is removed. Electromechanical (i.e. electromagnetically operated) switches usually take the form of relays, each of which consists of a U-shaped iron structure, as shown in Figure 1, around part of which a coil of wire has been wound. A hinged iron armature bridges the open end of the U.

The United States is facing challenges in applying First Amendment principles from the 18th century to modern communications. This chapter examines cases where the government has intruded upon First Amendment rights. The first section examines when the government attempts to prevent protests by cutting internet access. This amounts to a digital gag and ear plugs for the protesters. Aside from cutting access to a single area, some governments have access to total internet “kill switches.” This allows unsurpassed censorship of speech. Now there are technical means installed in most phones that could allow governments to disconnect internet access at the individual phone. In the area of social media, the courts are struggling to identify what constitutes speech. For example, when is a “like” or a “wink” speech? Equally important, when can a political figure censor speech through blocking users on social media? These cases represent warning signs that the United States, just like other countries, is struggling to adapt eighteenth century legal principles to modern communication.

Abstract:
In many vehicles, the largest electrical cable, located between the battery and the starter/alternator, is not fused and has limited mechanical protection. Being generally located in the front of the engine compartment, this cable poses a serious fire risk in cases of a crash, collision, or rollover. Vehicle deformation during a collision or rollover can damage the insulation of electrical cables and ground the wires. The high current caused by short circuits can produce elevated temperatures as well as electrical sparks or arcing that can ignite the cable’s insulation, ignite released flammable liquids or vapors, and can ignite nearby plastic components inside the engine compartment. Circuit protection devices are designed to disconnect the main power supply (battery) to cables and other electrical components, thereby reducing the occurrence of such fires. This paper reviews these devices and reports on the test results of a pyrotechnically driven safety switch engineered by Delphi.
