analysis, design and implementation of a DC-DC converter with active clamp forward topology is presented. The main objective of this thesis is generating a rectified sinusoidal voltage at the output of the converter. This is accomplished by changing the reference signal of the converter. The converter output is applied to an inverter circuit in order to obtain sinusoidal waveform. The zero crossing points of the converter is detected and the inverter drive signals are generated in order to obtain sinusoidal waveform from the output of the converter. Next, the operation of the DC-DC converter and sinusoidal output inverter coupled performance is investigated with resistive and inductive loads to find out how the proposed topology performs. The design is implemented with an experimental set-up and steady state and dynamic performance of the designed power supply is tested. Finally an evaluation of how better performance can be obtained from this kind of arrangement to obtain a sinusoidal output inverted is thoroughly discussed

Abstract:
Digitally-controlled, high power universal telecommunication power supply modules have been developed. In this work, the converter control strategy, and its design and implementation first, by means of parallel-operated, dual, 8-bit microcontrollers, and then by using a high processing power digital signal processor (DSP) have been emphasized. The proposed dual-processor based digital controller provides an extended operating output voltage range of the power supplies, user programmable current limit setting, serial communication based active load current sharing with automatic master-slave selection among parallel-operated modules, user selectable number of back-up battery cells, programmable temperature compensation curves, and automatic derating without extra hardware requirement. Overload and output short-circuit protection features are also controlled by software. One of the processors in the digital controller is employed for user interface purposes such as long term records, display, and alarm facilities, and remote control, which are inherently slow processes. The fast processing speed required by output voltage setting, current limit, and load current sharing however is to be fulfilled by a second processor dedicated to the adjustment of output voltages of modules. Tight dynamic load regulation requirement of a telecommunication power supply has been fulfilled by a 150 MIPS DSP, in place of a low cost, 8-bit microcontroller. The implemented digitally-controlled, 1.8 kW, 0-70V telecommunication power supplies have been tested successfully in several locations in the field.

Nasir, Nasir. "Development of novel low noise switch-mode power supply designs for high fidelity audio power amplifiers." Thesis, Bournemouth University, 2017. http://eprints.bournemouth.ac.uk/29795/.

Full text
Abstract:
Today, linear power supplies are widely used to provide the supply voltage rail to an audio amplifier and are considered bulky, inefficient and expensive due to the presence of various components. In particular, the typical requirements of linear designs call for physically large mains transformers, energy storage/filtering inductors and capacitors. This imposes a practical limit to the reduction of weight in audio power systems. In order to overcome these problems, Switch-mode Power Supplies (SMPS) incorporate high speed switching transistors that allow for much smaller power conversion and energy storage components to be employed. In addition the low power dissipation of the transistors in the saturated and off states results in higher efficiency, improved voltage regulation and excellent power factor ratings. The primary aim of this research was to develop and characterize a novel low noise switch mode power supply for an audio power amplifier. In this thesis, I proposed a novel balancing technique to optimize the design of SMPS that elevate the performance of converter and help to enhance the efficiency of power supply through high speed switching transistors. In fact, the proposed scheme mitigates the noise considerably in various converter topologies through different mechanisms. To validate the proposed idea, the technique is applied to different converters e.g; PFC boost converter, flyback converter and full-bridge converter. The performance of audio amplifier is evaluated using designed SMPS to compare with existing linear power supply. On the basis of experimental results, the decision has been made that the proposed balanced SMPS solution is as good as linear solution. Due to novelty and universality of balancing technique, it can provide a new path for researchers in this field to utilize the SMPS in all other audio devices by further enhancing its efficiency and reducing system noise.

Xie, Manjing. "Digital Control for Power Factor Correction." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34258.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the study, implementation and improvement of a digital controller for a power factor correction (PFC) converter. The development of the telecommunications industry and the Internet demands reliable, cost-effective and intelligent power. Nowadays, the telecommunication power systems have output current of up to several kilo amperes, consisting of tens of modules. The high-end server system, which holds over 100 CPUs, consumes tens of kilowatts of power. For mission-critical applications, communication between modules and system controllers is critical for reliability. Information about temperature, current, and the total harmonic distortion (THD) of each module will enable the availability of functions such as dynamic temperature control, fault diagnosis and removal, and adaptive control, and will enhance functions such as current sharing and fault protection. The dominance of analog control at the modular level limits system-module communications. Digital control is well recognized for its communication ability. Digital control will provide the solution to system-module communication for the DC power supply. The PFC converter is an important stage for the distributed power system (DPS). Its controller is among the most complex with its three-loop structure and multiplier/divider. This thesis studies the design method, implementation and cost effectiveness of digital control for both a PFC converter and for an advanced PFC converter. Also discussed is the influence of digital delay on PFC performance. A cost-effective solution that achieves good performance is provided. The effectiveness of the solution is verified by simulation. The three level PFC with range switch is well recognized for its high efficiency. The range switch changes the circuit topology according to the input voltage level. Research literature has discussed the optimal control for both range-switch-off and range-switch-on topologies. Realizing optimal analog control requires a complex structure. Until now optimal control for the three-level PFC with analog control has not been achieved. Another disadvantage of the three-level PFC is the output capacitor voltage imbalance. This thesis proposes an active balancing solution to solve this problem.

Abstract:
In this thesis a multifunctional DC/DC converter board will be developed for utilization as an educational experiment set in the switched-mode power conversion laboratory of power electronic courses. The board has a generic power-pole structure allowing for easy configuration of various power converter topologies and includes buck, boost, buck-boost, flyback, and forward converter topologies. All the converters can be operated in the open-loop control mode with a switching frequency range of 30-100 kHz and a maximum output power of 20 W. Also the buck converter can be operated in voltage mode control and the buck-boost converter can be operated in peak-current-mode control for the purpose of demonstrating the closed loop control performance of DC/DC converters. The designed board allows for experimentation on the DC/DC converters to observe the macroscopic (steadystate/ dynamic, PWM cycle and low frequency) and microscopic (switching dynamic) behavior of the converters. In the experiments both such characteristics can be clearly observed such that students at basic learning level (involving only the macroscopic behavior), and students at advanced learning level (additionally involving the parasitic effects) can benefit from the experiments. The thesis reviews the switch mode conversion principles, gives the board design and proceeds with the experiments illustrating the capabilities of the experimental system.

Abstract:
In this thesis, the design and implementation of an ac-dc power factor correction system based on single-stage step up/down converters is presented. The system has been designed to regulate the supply current of a string of LEDs connected in series. The driver has the capability to maintain a constant luminous flux and to dimmer the LED in a wide range of current values. Simultaneously, the system maintains a very low level of current harmonics introduced into the AC mains. The analysis has demonstrated the feasibility in applying the sliding mode control for imposing simultaneously, at single-stage high-order converters (Ćuk, SEPIC and Shepard-Taylor), a Loss-Free Resistor (LFR) behavior and a regulated output current. In this context, it has been exposed in detail the dynamic analysis and the design of a current regulation loop for a Ćuk-based LFR supplied from a AC voltage source of 230 Vrms-50 Hz. One of the problems identified has been the presence of distortion in the input current waveform at the zero crossings. Such distortion prevents, for low input powers, the harmonics compliance and therefore limits their use in LED dimming. To overcome this problem, it has been proposed a technique, based on a variable hysteresis window, to improve the performance near the zero crossing of the input current. This improvement is achieved by increasing the switching frequency near this zero crossing region. With this technique, the dimming range goes from 0-100% maintaining at the same time very low harmonic distortion at the input current. Moreover, experimental and computer simulation results presented are given in order to verify the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:
KTH is funding a project whose goal is to send a satellite into space. This project is called MIST (Miniature Student Satellite) which is assembled by a team of students at KTH. On the satellite there are experiments that are invented by other teams, in two of those experiments a power supply is required. This thesis is a technical investigation on how to design the power supply to both of those experiments, which are called SiC and Piezo LEGS. Piezo LEGS will investigate how their nanosized motors will behave and function in a space environment. SiC will investigate how their silicone carbide transistors will be affected by the space environment. A team made of four other students was selected to produce SiC experiments and a PCB in which this work is included. A literature study was done to get a better understanding of how power supplies work and to know how to select a good power supply. When the power supplies were selected they were simulated to meet the requirements. The next step was to do a Printed Circuit Board(PCB) for the SiC experiment and Piezo LEGS to be able to test the power supplies functionality in the physical world. Both of the converters reached the required output and characteristics working on their respective PCB. More time is needed for long time testing and optimization on the PCB layouts.

In the thesis the design of the Data Storage System (DSS) is proposed with the respect to the V-Model methodology. The design is based on users requirements, from which the system requirements are created and the technical specification of the DSS is developed. In the technical specifications the functionality of the DMM and HMI DSS subsystems are described and sub-system requirements are assigned to them, then they are subdivided and assigned to individual DMM (Data memory module) and HMI hardware items. Moreover, requirements are analyzed on hardware items, specific electronic components, are selected and implemented into the block design of the DMM hardware. Based on the block design of hardware, the hardware of the DMM subsystem is designed, selectively simulated and implemented along with the printed circuit board. On the implemented hardware of the DMM subsystems measurements are performed in order to verify the basic functionality of the hardware and the calculated, assimilated and measured values are compared as well. At the end of the thesis there is a short description of the implementation of the software design and its use for basic initialization of the selected processor, together with the verification of its basic function - measuring the frequency of the internal clock sources and the clock domains. The work is completed by sending a message of defined parameters to the selected communication line and sapling it by an oscilloscope, so that the basic function of the DMM subsystem is verified.

Abstract:
For thirty years, the threat of electromagnetic pulses caused by a high-altitude nuclear explosion (NEMP / HEMP) is still an actual concern in the field of security and safety. NEMP couples efficiently on aerial lines of the electricity network allowing to supply houses and factories. Once coupled to these lines, the generated interference can then be propagated to the first encountered systems and disturb or destroy them. In most cases, these systems are household or industries appliances power supplies. In this context, destruction effects of electronic power supplies due to high level current pulse injectionare studied thanks to an injection generator called PIC for Current Injection Platform. A flyback switch mode power supply (SMPS), representative of a majority of common power supplies, has been designed for the thesis in order to fully control its topology and components. The most susceptible components in SMPS have been identified and have been destroyed due to a too high level current over an excessive duration compared to their maximum ratings. These understandings have been supported by X-rays and optical microscope analyzes. These ones allowed to provide first hypotheses on their destruction cause, which were then confirmed by current and voltage measurements on each component during the pulse injection. Finally, PIC and the designed SMPS have been modeled using a Spice electronic simulation software. This thesis is the first step of a work whose final objective is to model the susceptibility of SMPS in order to predict their destruction level

The fast development of high-level computers has promoted the growing demands for switch-mode power supplies with high energy density and efficiency recently. Hence, the switch-mode power supplies operated at high frequency have evidently dominated over the conventional linear power supplies. However, sinusoidal ac currents chopped by the high speed switching devices into current pulses would not only affect the stability of the circuits but also deteriorate the power factor with more energy losses. Thus, the improvement on the power factor of switch-mode power supplies has been the common goal and incentive in the industry. In this thesis, average current control mode has been employed for simulating the complete power circuits with the help of EDA software, namely Pspice, on analyzing circuits and modeling devices such that stability and high power factor can be achieved. Moreover, the paralleling of power supplied has been studied for correcting the power factor with optimized operational regions under power overload conditions. The results are promising for the future applications of simulation in PFC circuits.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to introduce a family of interactive Switch Mode Power Supplies (SMPS) for reducing the overall volume of the conventional converter topologies in low-to-medium power (up to 60W) applications. As shown in this thesis, the interaction between power supplies and electronic devices can be incorporated with emerging digital controllers for SMPS, to implement flexible converter topologies. These flexible topologies dynamically change the converter configuration, based on the load requirement, to provide near ideal transient response and/or improved efficiency over a wide range of operating conditions. This interaction relaxes the energy storage requirement for the converter reactive components and results in a low volume implementation. The interaction with the SMPS can be between the electronic load and the power supply or different conversion stages of a multi-stage converter. The effectiveness of the introduced family of SMPS is verified on digitally controlled dc-dc and ac-dc converter topologies.

In this thesis, a PC-based automatic measurement and filter design system for the electromagnetic interference emission of SMR is developed. The man-machine interface is written in LabVIEW graphical programming language. The effort of solving the conductive EMI is greatly reduced by the fast computing speed and the friendly man-machine interface of the PC. The emission measurement and suppression procedure established can accomplish the reduction of the developing period and cost. Not only the production is speeded up, but also the acceptability of the SMR manufacturers can increase. Finally, in order to verify the feasibility of the developed system, a 3kW SMR is taken as the equipment under test (EUT). The resulted EMI can be successfully solved and make SMR meet VDE Class B limit.

Abstract:
The miniaturization of dc–dc switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) is of a key importance in volume-sensitive portable devices, such as cell phones, tablet computers, and digital cameras. In these systems, multiple SMPS are required to provide well regulated voltage and power to various electronic components such as the central processing unit (CPU) and random-access memory (RAM). The combined volume, weight, and surface area footprint of these SMPS is usually the largest component. Traditionally, SMPS volume reduction has been achieved through increased switching frequencies; however, for power-sensitive applications this is undesirable due to the increased switching losses. This thesis presents two alternative, power-efficient, SMPS miniaturization methods: one control and one topology based. The presented controller recovers from load transients with virtually minimum possible output voltage deviation, reducing the reactive component size. The controller utilizes a simple algorithm, requiring no knowledge of the converter parameters and virtually no processing power. The simplicity of the control concept enabled the design of an area and power efficient integrated circuit (IC) implementation. The entire IC is implemented in a CMOS 0.18µm process on a 0.26 mm2 silicon area, which is comparable to the state-of-the-art analog solutions. For the experimental system the deviation (output capacitor size) is about four times smaller than that of a fast PID compensator having a 1/10th of the switching frequency bandwidth. The second solution is a complementary converter topology that has a smaller output filter volume, improved dynamic response, and lower switching losses compared to the state-of-the-art solutions. To reduce the volume and switching losses, the input-to-output voltage difference is decreased with a capacitive attenuator that replaces the input filter capacitor and has approximately the same volume. Both the attenuator and the downstream buck converter share the same set of switches, minimizing conduction losses. A single multi-mode digital controller governs operation of both stages, seamlessly regulating the output and input center-tap voltages. Experiments with a 5–1.5-V, 2.5-A, 1-MHz prototype show that, compared to the conventional buck, the merged topology has 43% smaller inductor, 36% smaller output capacitor, up to 30% lower power losses, and a 25% faster transient response.

This study presents design and performance evaluation of 100W DC/DC boost converter and 90W AC/DC adapter based on cascoded GaN-HEMTs power device operated at 500 KHz and 250 KHz switching frequency respectively. In high frequency circuits, proper selection of MOSFETs is required in order to have low gate drive power consumption so that high energy efficiency of the converter can be achieved. Even though Si MOSFET has already known for its popularity in low to medium power converters and high frequency applications, GaN HEMTs device could produce better results. This can be done by reducing the total switching loss, conduction loss because of its low Rds-on and gate drive power consumption of the converter as a result of low gate charge, Qg. The experimental results reveal that GaN HEMTs can produce higher energy savings including gate drive power by gaining approximately 4% efficiency compared to its counterpart, Si MOSFET in a regulated 90 W isolated AC/DC converter. In addition, the converter circuit operated at higher frequencies makes it possible to reduce the size of the energy storage elements such as capacitors, inductors and transformers which in turn results in the compact size, weight, volume and the increased power density of the converter.

Abstract:
Functional electrical stimulation (FES) devices have direct applications in the realm of rehabilitation engineering, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and medicine for research, diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. This thesis presents a novel electrical stimulator for use in a FES system. The stimulator produces regulated current pulses using two switched mode power supplies (SMPS) in series. The first power stage - a flyback converter - steps up the supply voltage using primary side digital control. The second power stage is a buck converter with output current hysteretic control. An output switched capacitor circuit shapes the current pulses. All pulse variables are programmable and various pulses can be formed for virtually any FES application. Compared to previous FES devices, the pulses generated here are sharper, have faster rise time and the amplitude and temporal characteristics are more tightly regulated. A single channel prototype system is implemented and experimental results are shown.

Abstract:
Modern switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) used for point-of-load (PoL) applications need to meet increasingly stringent requirements on voltage regulation, while minimizing physical volume and optimizing conversion efficiency. The focus of this thesis is the voltage regulation capability of low-power PoL converters during load transients. The main objective is to investigate converter topologies and control techniques that can achieve fast and smooth transient performance without significant penalty in volume and efficiency. The digital control method is used due to its ability to implement sophisticated control algorithms. The first part of this thesis investigates a dual output stages converter, with a small auxiliary output stage connected in parallel with the main output stage. While the main output stage is responsible for steady-state operation and designed to achieve optimum efficiency, the auxiliary stage is activated when a load transient occurs, to help suppress voltage deviation. Experimental results on a 6 V-to-1 V, 3W buck converter shows 35% improvement in peak transient voltage deviation while maintaining the same efficiency profile, compared to an equivalent buck converter. The second part of this thesis introduces a flyback-transformer based buck (FTBB) converter. In this topology, the conventional buck inductor is replaced with the primary winding of the flyback transformer, an extra switch, and a set of small auxiliary switches on the secondary side. During heavy-to-light load transients the inductor current is steered away from the output capacitor to the input port, achieving both energy recycling and savings due to reduced voltage overshoots. The light-to-heavy transient response is improved by reducing the equivalent inductance of the primary transformer winding to its leakage value. Compared to an equivalent buck converter, experiment results on a 6 V-to-1 V, 3 W prototype show three times smaller maximum output voltage deviation during load transients and, for frequently changing loads, about 7% decrease in power losses.

Abstract:
This Master of Applied Science thesis proposes a new design of low power, power factor corrected (PFC), power supplies. By lifting the hold up time restriction for devices that have a battery built in, the energy storage elements of the converter can be reduced, permitting a small and inexpensive power converter to be built. In addition, a new control technique for controlling cascaded converters is presented, named duty mode control (DMC). Its advantages are shown through simulations. The system was proven using a prototype developed in the laboratory designed for a universal ac input voltage (85 - 265VRMS at 50 - 60Hz) and a 40W output at 12V. It consisted of two interleaved phases sensed and digitally controlled on the isolated side of the converter. The prototype was able to achieve a power factor of greater than 0.98 for all operating conditions, and input harmonic current distortion well below any set of standards.

Abstract:
The main goal of this thesis is to develop practical digital controller architectures for multi-phase dc-dc converters utilized in low power (up to few hundred watts) and cost-sensitive applications. The proposed controllers are suitable for on-chip integration while being capable of providing advanced features, such as dynamic efficiency optimization, inductor current estimation, converter component identification, as well as combined dynamic current sharing and fast transient response. The first part of this thesis addresses challenges related to the practical implementation of digital controllers for low-power multi-phase dc-dc converters. As a possible solution, a multi-use high-frequency digital PWM controller IC that can regulate up to four switching converters (either interleaved or standalone) is presented. Due to its configurability, low current consumption (90.25 μA/MHz per phase), fault-tolerant work, and ability to operate at high switching frequencies (programmable, up to 10 MHz), the IC is suitable to control various dc-dc converters. The applications range from dc-dc converters used in miniature battery-powered electronic devices consuming a fraction of watt to multi-phase dedicated supplies for communication systems, consuming hundreds of watts. A controller for multi-phase converters with unequal current sharing is introduced and an efficiency optimization method based on logarithmic current sharing is proposed in the second part. By forcing converters to operate at their peak efficiencies and dynamically adjusting the number of active converter phases based on the output load current, a significant improvement in efficiency over the full range of operation is obtained (up to 25%). The stability and inductor current transition problems related to this mode of operation are also resolved. At last, two reconfigurable digital controller architectures with multi-parameter estimation are introduced. Both controllers eliminate the need for external analog current/temperature sensing circuits by accurately estimating phase inductor currents and identifying critical phase parameters such as equivalent resistances, inductances and output capacitance. A sensorless non-linear, average current-mode controller is introduced to provide fast transient response (under 5 μs), small voltage deviation and dynamic current sharing with multi-phase converters. To equalize the thermal stress of phase components, a conduction loss-based current sharing scheme is proposed and implemented.
