Abstract:
In the last few decades, there has been increased interest in the incorporation of data from bi- and multilingual individuals in linguistic theory: from second language acquisition and language attrition to heritage varieties and code-switching. This dissertation discusses a range of ways in which code-switching data can provide insight into the mechanisms that underlie linguistic structures. The data will be analysed within the framework of Minimalist Generative syntax and Distributed Morphology. The first part investigates grammatical gender assignment in code- switching between English, a language without grammatical gender, and two languages with grammatical gender: French and Belgian Dutch. These languages have comparable, but different gender systems. French has two genders: masculine and feminine, whereas Belgian Dutch adds a third: neuter. The study in this part of the dissertation compares gen- der assignment strategies in bilinguals with different profiles. In addition, the code-switching data provide evidence against the default status of neuter in Belgian Dutch. The second part focuses on word order and includes two studies: one on verb-second word order in Dutch-English code-switching and one on adverb placement in English-French and Dutch-English code- switching. The verb-second chapter identifies a lacuna in the traditional Generative analysis for verb second and uses the CS data to address this. The chapter on adverb position looks at placement of the adverb between the verb and its direct object, which is allowed in Dutch and French, but not in English. For all domains investigated, it is found that the finite verb predicts word order.Taken together, these studies demonstrate that bilingual data can shine a light on elements of the theory of grammar which remain in the shadows when only monolingual data is used.

Olsson, Fredrik, and Gabriella Gall. "How do the predictors of switching intention influence switching behavior? : A quantitative study of students’ switching behavior in the retail banking context." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Företagsekonomi, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-57408.

Abstract:
Due to the increased number of niched retail banks in Sweden, the competition for the customers has become severe. Bank customers in the Swedish bank market tend to stay with their bank. The challenge of how to manage to attract new customers is a central part of the retail banks’ management tasks. The research area on which we have been focusing on is the area of consumer behavior. We have been focusing on student switching behavior of financial services provided by retail banks in general and ICA banken in particular. To strengthen the practical connection, we choose to focus on the case of ICA banken. Our objective was to investigate which predictors that affect switching intention and investigate how these predictors affect students’ switching behavior, which in the extension will contribute to how retail banks can work towards manage these rising issues. We formulated the following research question: How do the predictors of switching intention affect switching behavior in the retail banking context? Our purpose was to investigate the predictors of switching intention and their effects on switching behavior in the retail banking context. The study was performed with a quantitative method and a deductive approach. By using a convenience sampling technique, we collected the data electronically. The population examined was the student segment at Umeå University. Our questionnaire was constructed with the theoretical chapter as framework, and the discussion, conclusion and practical implications are based on our empirical findings. Our study was geographically limited to Umeå University. The ability to generalize our findings was also limited, due to our chosen sampling technique. We reached a conclusion that the greatest predictor of switching intention was attitude towards switching. Additionally, the greatest predictors of switching behavior was a combination of attitude towards switching and customer satisfaction. Our practical implications consisted of the recommendation for retail banks to focus on developing marketing strategies that would bank customers more positive towards the act of switching bank in order to attract new customers. Our findings showed that bank customers in general were neither negative nor positive towards the act of switching bank. For ICA banken we gave three proposals; to attract new customers, to transform customers that only partly use the bank to customers that use ICA banken for the majority of their financial transactions and to maintain current customers. These actions are made by managing customer satisfaction, brand image, the relational investment between ICA banken and customers, and subjective norms since these should affect the attitude towards switching bank.

Humala, Acuña Alberto. "Markov switching modelling of interest rate pass-through." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2005. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/34676/.

Full text
Abstract:
The first paper, "Interest rate pass-through and financial crises: do switching regimes matter? The case of Argentina", analyses the dynamic relationship between a money market (interbank) rate and different short-term lending rates by measuring their passthrough. Neither linear single-equation modelling nor linear multi-equation systems capture efficiently this relationship. Several financial crises alter the speed and degree of response to interbank rate shocks. Hence, a Markov switching VAR model shows the pass-through increases considerably for all market interest rates in a high-volatility scenario. The model identifies correctly the periods in which regime shifts occur, and associates them to financial crises. The second paper, "Modelling interest rate pass-through with endogenous switching regimes in Argentina", extends the scope of the Markov switching modelling by including time-varying transition probabilities. Interest rate spreads are used as leading indicators. The model allows devaluation expectations and country risks, (measured by rate spreads) to signal regime switching. Estimation results suggest that the passthrough tends to overshoot with financial instability, but to decrease if that condition is sufficiently large and long-lived. Likewise, results show a quite heterogeneous credit market, with a highly efficient transmission mechanism in the corporate segment, but considerably less in the consumer segment. The final paper, "Regime switching in interest rate pass-through and dynamic bank modelling with risks", builds a theoretical model of dynamic bank optimisation, which provides rationale to a regime-switching behaviour in the interest rate pass-through. It is shown that a regime-switching interbank rate induces a nonlinear behaviour in lending and deposit rates and (by further introducing interbank-alike regime-switching risk premiums) in the pass-through. Thus, the pass-through process is consistent with a nonlinear behaviour even if there are no asymmetric adjustment costs in the response to interbank rate shocks. An empirical application to France and Germany provide results that support these conclusions.

Abstract:
van Norden and Schaller (1996) develop a standard regime-switching model to study stock market crashes. In their seminal paper, they use the maximum likelihood estimation to estimate the model parameters and show that a two-regime speculative bubble model has significant explanatory power for stock market returns in some observed periods. However, it is well known that the maximum likelihood estimation can lead to bias if the model contains multiple local maximum points or the estimation starts with poor initial values. Therefore, a better approach to estimate the parameters in the regime-switching models is to be found. One possible way is the Bayesian Gibbs-sampling approach, where its advantages are well discussed in Albert and Chib (1993). In this thesis, the Bayesian Gibbs-sampling estimation is examined by using two U.S. stock datasets: CRSP monthly value-weighted index from Jan 1926 to Dec 2010 and S&P 500 index from Jan 1871 to Dec 2010. It is found that the Gibbs-sampling estimation explains the U.S. data better than the maximum likelihood estimation. Moreover, the existing standard regime-switching speculative behaviour model is extended by considering the time-varying transition probabilities which are governed by the first-order Markov chain. It is shown that the time-varying first-order transition probabilities of Markov regime-switching speculative rational bubbles can lead stock market returns to have a second-order Markov regime. In addition, a Bayesian Gibbs-sampling algorithm is developed to estimate the parameters in the second-order two-state Markov regime-switching model.

Hardt, Michael Hermann. "Behaviour and ownership in the theory of competition and regulation." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1996. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1447/.

Full text
Abstract:
Ownership matters. It affects residual rights under incomplete contracts and, therefore, incentives. The first chapter of this thesis analyzes in how far ownership can be substituted by other economic factors. Contrary to an assumption found in the literature market foreclosure can be achieved without vertical integration in the following scenarios: repeated games, reputation games, and also in a finitely repeated game when there are switching costs. The main chapter is concerned with implications of ownership in regulated industries where a monopolistic supplier of an essential input is required by a regulator to charge cost based prices. Our analysis focuses on the impact of ownership on the monopolist's incentives to exploit informational asymmetries about production costs. We conduct a comparative study of vertical integration, vertical separation, and joint ownership. Effects on welfare, investments incentives, and entry are analyzed for each ownership structure. Joint ownership performs best. Accounting separation is shown to be generally ineffective as regulatory instrument. We use an alternative model which allows to take into account network duplication. Starting from a free market analysis of equilibrium pricing and entry decisions we explore the relation between ownership and the degree of regulation required in order to ensure efficient outcomes. Two part tariffs, network duplication, price discrimination and a long-term commitment to fixed input prices induce reductions of final prices. The final part of this thesis investigates results in the theory of competitive market equilibrium. Many of these results rely on restrictive assumptions on consumer behaviour. We analyze in how far traditional equilibrium theory is robust against a relaxation of underlying assumptions. We do not assume agents to be rational in the sense that their choices arise from maximisation. Randomly fluctuating demand is allowed for and consequences for predictions made by traditional competitive equilibrium theory are re-examined.

Tan, Min. "Regime switching behaviour of the UK equity risk premium." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2013. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/4400/.

Full text
Abstract:
We apply regime-switching models to study the dynamic switching behaviour of equity risk premia. Traditionally, equity risk premia have been estimated assuming a single regime exists. Regime-switching models allow for the existence of two, or more, regimes. Three regime-switching models are employed: structural break models, threshold models and Markov regime-switching models. Both structural break models and threshold models assume that the switching mechanism is deterministic. The former allow for only a single break and the state variable is solely determined by time. Under the latter, multiple changes are allowed and the state variable is determined by an observable variable with respect to an unobserved threshold. In Markov regime-switching models, equity risk premia are allowed to switch probabilistically for each observation. This is achieved by introducing a state variable which is governed by a Markov process. To capture the co-movements among financial variables, we extend regime-switching models to a VAR framework, employing threshold autoregressive vector models and Markov regime-switching vector models. We estimate models of UK equity risk premia conditionally on the state variable which is related to business conditions. The results of non-linearity tests favour regime-switching models and suggest that regime-switching is an important characteristic of UK equity risk premia.

Iqbal, Javed. "Application of regime switching and random matrix theory for portfolio optimization." Thesis, University of Essex, 2018. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/22633/.

Full text
Abstract:
Market economies have been characterized by boom and bust cycles. Since the seminal work of Hamilton (1989), these large scale fluctuations have been referred to as regime switches. Ang and Bekaert (2002) were the first to consider the role of regime switches for stock market returns and portfolio optimisation. The key stylized facts regarding regime switching for stock index returns is that boom periods with positive mean stock returns are associated with low volatility, while bear markets with negative mean returns have high volatility. The correlation of asset returns also show asymmetry with greater correlation being found during stock market downturns. In view of the large portfolio losses from correlated negative movements in asset returns during the recent 2007 financial crisis, it has become imperative to incorporate regime sensitivity in portfolio management. This thesis forms an extensive application of regime sensitive statistics for stock returns in the management of equity portfolios for different markets. Starting with the application to a small 3 asset portfolio for UK stocks (in Chapter 4), the methodology is extended to large scale portfolio for the FTSE-100. In chapters 5 and 6, respectively, using stock index data from the subcontinent (India, Pakistan and Bangladesh) and for the Asia Pacific, optimal regime sensitive portfolios have been analysed with the MSCI AC Index (for Emerging and Asia Pacific Markets) being taken as the benchmark index. Portfolio performance has been studied using a dynamic end of month rebalancing of the portfolio on the basis of regime indicators given by market index and relevant regime dependent portfolio statistics. The cumulative end of period returns and risk adjusted Sharpe Ratio from this exercise is compared to the simple Markowitz mean-variance portfolio and market value portfolio. The regime switching optimal portfolio strategy has been found to dominate non-regime sensitive portfolio strategies in Asia Pacific and 3 asset portfolio for UK stocks cases but not in Subcontinent case (for the first half of out-sample period). In the case of the relationship of the sub-continental indexes vis-à-vis the MSCI benchmark index, the latter has negligible explanatory power for the former especially for the first half of out-sample period. Hence, the regime indicators based on MSCI emerging market index have detrimental effects on portfolio selection based on the sub-continental indexes. As regime sensitive variance–covariance matrices have implications for the selection of optimal portfolio weights, the final Chapter 7 uses the FTSE-100 and its constituent company data to compare and contrast the implications for optimal portfolio management of filtering the covariance matrix using Random Matrix Theory (RMT). While it is found that filtering the variance-covariance matrix using Marchenko-Pasteur bounds of RMT improves optimal portfolio choice in both non-regime and regime dependent cases, remarkably in the latter case for Regime 2 determined variance-covariance matrix, the RMT filter was least needed. This result is given in Chapter 7, Table 7.5-1. This confirms the significance of using Hamilton (1989) regime sensitive statistics for stock returns in identifying the ‘true’ non-noisy variance-covariance relationships. The RMT methodology is also useful for identifying the centrality, based on eigenvector analysis, of the constituent stocks in their role in driving crisis and non-crisis market conditions. A fully automated suite of programs in MATLAB have been developed for regime switching portfolio optimization with RMT filtering of the variance-covariance matrix.

Kapasi, Zahera Danielle. "Exploring the role of language switching in psychological therapy." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/28336.

Full text
Abstract:
Literature Review: A systematic review was conducted exploring the use of language switching in therapy and its role in therapeutic engagement for bilingual therapists and their bilingual minority ethnic clients. The review identified three main themes of research focusing on the training needs and professional development of bilingual therapists; the emotional aspects of language use; and the use of language switching and its perceived effects on the therapeutic process. Findings highlighted that language switching can be a powerful and useful tool to enhance therapeutic engagement and client self-disclosure though gaps in the training needs of bilingual therapists was evident. Implications for future research and practice are discussed for enhancing our understanding of a tool which may prove valuable for bilingual therapists when accessing and engaging with diverse populations in the therapeutic domain. Research Report: A two-part investigation was conducted to explore the current practices on language switching amongst bilingual clinical psychologists in the United Kingdom. A survey indicated the prevalence of language switching across a diverse range of language skills and backgrounds whilst semi-structured interviews explored, in depth, experiences of South Asian clinical psychologists and the complexities associated with language switching. Findings highlighted the value of language switching and the tensions which arise relating to psychologists‟ identity, professional boundaries and supervision needs. Clinical implications are discussed and recommendations for future research are provided for an area of practice which is valuable in engaging bilingual minority ethnic populations. Critical Appraisal: A reflective diary provided an account of the research process considering the research strengths, limitations and learning outcomes. Those issues pertinent to the researcher have been discussed in this section.

Abstract:
This work describes analysis, design, and implementation of a novel switching robust adaptive control (SRAC) method for nonlinear systems. The proposed method takes advantage of both adaptive control (AC) and robust control (RC) methods. SRAC employs one of the methods when this method is advantageous and switches to the other method when the other one becomes the preferred choice. To this end, RC is used to deal with transient effects caused by uncertainties and disturbances. The system switches over to AC for good steady state performance when certain switching criteria are satisfied. If external disturbances become dominant or new uncertainties are introduced while AC is active, the system will switch back to RC. In this manner, the switching process between AC and RC will continue to take place guaranteeing improved performance, robustness, and accuracy for the entire operation of the system. The novel idea behind the proposed method is a smart novel mechanism of bi-directional switching between RC and AC. In this mechanism, the involvement of estimators and switching rules play a decisive part in guaranteeing the smooth switching and the stability of the system. The implementation and design issues of the novel method were first evaluated by simulation on a mass spring system and then on a robot manipulator system. To control these systems with satisfactory performance, nonlinearities and uncertainties have been properly analysed and embedded into models and control algorithms. Simulation results showed the superior performance of the proposed method compared with other control methods. The experimental validation of the proposed method was conducted on a Puma 560 robot manipulator system which was established by joints 2 and 3 of the robot. Extensive comparative experimental results have validated the efficacy and superior performance of the proposed SRAC method over other control methods in the face of uncertainties and disturbances. As part of this work, a comprehensive dynamic model of robotic manipulator in the presence of joint motors, gravitational forces, friction forces and payload has been developed using MAPLE. A systematic design framework for the SRAC method has also been developed.

Schweizer, Andreas. "Analysis and optimisation of stable matching in combined input and output queued switches." Western Australian Telecommunications Research Institute, 2009. http://theses.library.uwa.edu.au/adt-WU2009.0078.

Full text
Abstract:
Output queues in network switches are known to provide a suitable architecture for scheduling disciplines that need to provide quality of service (QoS) guarantees. However, today’s memory technology is incapable of meeting the speed requirements. Combined input and output queued (CIOQ) switches have emerged as one alternative to address the problem of memory speed. When a switch of this architecture uses a stable matching algorithm to transfer packets across the switch fabric, an output queued (OQ) switch can be mimicked exactly with a speedup of only two. The use of a stable matching algorithm typically requires complex and time-consuming calculations to ensure the behaviour of an OQ switch is maintained. Stable matching algorithms are well studied in the area in which they originally appeared. However, little is presently known on how the stable matching algorithm performs in CIOQ switches and how key parameters are affected by switch size, traffic type and traffic load. Knowledge of how these conditions affect performance is essential to judge the practicability of an architecture and to provide useful information on how to design such switches. Until now, CIOQ switches were likely to be dismissed due to the high complexity of the stable matching algorithm when applied to other applications. However, the characteristics of a stable matching algorithm in a CIOQ switch have not been thoroughly analysed. The principal goal of this thesis is to identify the conditions the stable matching algorithm encounters in a CIOQ switch under realistic operational scenarios. This thesis provides accurate mathematical models based on Markov chains to predict the value of key parameters that affect the complexity and runtime of a stable matching algorithm in CIOQ switches. The applicability of the models is then backed up by simulations. The results of the analysis quantify critical operational parameters, such as the size and number of preference lists and runtime complexity. These provide detailed insights into switch behaviour and useful information for switch designs. Major conclusions to be drawn from this analysis include that the average values of the key parameters of the stable matching algorithm are feasibly small and do not strongly correlate with switch size, which is contrary to the behaviour of the stable matching ii algorithm in its original application. Furthermore, although these parameters have wide theoretical ranges, the mean values and standard deviations are found to be small under operational conditions. The results also suggest that the implementation becomes very versatile as the completion time of the stable matching algorithm is not strongly correlated to the network traffic type; that is, the runtime is minimally affected by the nature of the traffic.

Ng, Han-Yong. "Thermally Controllable Microring Resonator-based Silicon Photonic Switch." Scholarly Repository, 2007. http://scholarlyrepository.miami.edu/oa_theses/82.

Full text
Abstract:
A 4 × 4 photonic switch matrix was designed, fabricated and characterized. The photonic switch matrix was based on microring resonator (MR) and was fabricated on relatively low-cost silicon-on-insulator (SOI). Independent wavelength channel switching was accomplished by thermo-optic tuning of the MRs through highly localized resistive micro-heaters. The device was fabricated using the relatively mature silicon fabrication technology. Waveguide patterns were defined with high definition eBeam lithography, etching was done in a reactive-ion etching chamber, and the top cladding SiO2 layer was deposited through plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. Finally, resistive Nichrome micro-heaters were deposited locally directly above each MR to offer the dynamic tuning capability. The strong optical confinement offered by the high index contrast between silicon and SiO2 makes it possible to fabricate micrometer-sized MRs with acceptable optical power loss caused by the small bending radii. The MRs were designed with a uniform diameter of 10 µm to support a wide free spectral range. All waveguides have a design dimension of 450 nm × 250 nm to allow operation exclusively in the fundamental mode at the 1.55 µm wavelength. A FSR of 18 nm with a spectral linewidth of 0.1 nm were observed for the fabricated MRs offering high wavelength selectivity. The device exhibits virtually no thermal crosstalk between adjacent channels, showing no output peak wavelength shift at 0.01 nm wavelength measurement precision by thermally tuning an adjacent MR with electric current as high as 7 mA, which is equivalent to about 2.5 nm in resonance wavelength tuning. The device showed a tuning delay time of about 1 ms. The overall bare chip size of the device is 20 mm × 4 mm. We demonstrated through this work a wavelength selective photonic switch device using low-cost SOI technology that is compact and easy to fabricate. It shows high potential for further development into high port-count photonic switch matrix.

Richardson, Dean. "Theory of optical nonlinearities in semiconductors: Applications to nonlinear wavemixing and photonic switching." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185450.

Full text
Abstract:
Nonlinear optical switching and grating formation/scattering effects in thin semiconductor samples are modeled utilizing a combined microscopic/macroscopic theoretical approach. The microscopic optical nonlinearities of the materials of interest are treated using the semiconductor plasma theory of Banyai and Koch. Computer simulations are used to evaluate the models developed under both steady-state and dynamic conditions. The overall objective of the simulations is to provide a realistic assessment of the potential performance of semiconductor etalon-based nonlinear optical devices for photonic switching and processing applications. To this end, parameter studies are performed with the goal of finding device designs that can operate cascadably, at subnanosecond speeds, with minimum switching energy. Both bistable and two-wavelength operating modes are investigated, with an emphasis on dynamic determination of system characteristics such as contrast, fanout, and differential gain. For bistable semiconductor etalons, the maximum gain achieveable is found to depend in a fundamental way on the relationship between the pulsed-excitation timescale t(p) and the carrier lifetime τ(R). Significant differential gain is shown to disappear for GaAs etalons as t(p)/τ(R) approaches unity, implying that subnanosecond cascading of bistable devices is impractical in this case. For two-wavelength logic gates, several potential solutions to the well-known input/output-wavelength incompatibility problem are proposed. Through the use of a NOR-gate/upconverter etalon pair, picosecond cascadable operation with a fanout of two and contrast of at least five are predicted, requiring a total input energy of 75 picojoules. Utilizing an injected current and stimulated recombination in an active NOR-gate design, the total input energy can be reduced to about 25 picojoules for cascadable, high-contrast operation. The nonlinear semiconductor field-propagation model is also applied to the case of degenerate four-wave mixing in the Raman-Nath regime. The resulting theoretical framework is compared with widely-used small-signal analyses of DFWM in semiconductors for the case of bulk GaAs. The comparison makes clear the inadequacies of such approaches in extracting nonlinear material properties from DFWM experiments performed using moderate to high input intensities. Dynamic simulations of diffraction efficiency spectra in low-temperature CdS are compared with data from corresponding pulsed experiments, producing good qualitative agreement. On the basis of the observed theory-experiment correlation, several drawbacks of DFWM spectroscopy in comparison to pump-probe techniques are discussed.

Adamson, Jesse Timothy. "Pulse Density Modulated Soft Switching Cycloconverter." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2010. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/315.

Full text
Abstract:
Single stage cycloconverters generally incorporate hard switching at turn on and soft switching at turn off. This hard switching at turn on combined with the slow switching speeds of thyristors (the switch of choice for standard cycloconverters) limits their use to lower frequency applications. This thesis explores the analysis and design of a pulse density modulated (PDM), soft switching cycloconverter. Unlike standard cycloconverters, the controller in this converter does not adjust thyristor firing angles. It lets only complete half cycles of the input waveform through to the output. This allows and requires a much greater frequency step down from the input to the output. The advantages, shortcomings and tradeoffs of this topology are explored as this converter is designed, built and tested. The resulting cycloconverter has many deficiencies, but proves the concept of the PDM soft switching technique. Cases for further improvement and study are outlined. In the end, this converter shows much promise for applications requiring a high step down in frequency, as well as where the lower electromagnetic interference (EMI) of soft switching may be beneficial.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis has to do with certain fundamental queues that are well established as models for delay in simple packet-switching concentrators and networks. We first revisit the single server queue with Poisson arrivals and general independent service times. We then work out a complete delay analysis for a traffic concentrating tandem network of queues with deterministic service and batch Poisson sources connected to every node; this is the most comprehensive analysis available for a network which is not of Jackson type. We also show how to (partially) extend the analysis to a concentrating tree network, and to an arrival process somewhat more general that batch Poisson.
The two parts of the thesis have a close methodological relationship. Our contribution in both cases is to rederive certain known results, and to produce a variety of new ones, using techniques that are essentially qualitative. Our particular view of the stochastic processes in question is guided by a very special queue discipline, namely Last Come First Served preemptive resume; by identifying certain structural features of the sample paths, one can read, almost without calculation, a host of statistics of common interest. The LCFS preemptive resume discipline also enables us: (i) to strengthen the connection between the single server queue with general independent service times and interarrival times, and the fluctuation theory of random walks; (ii) to strengthen the connection between the queue with Poisson arrivals and branching processes.

Appiah, Dominic. "Building resistance to brand switching during disruptions in a competitive market : an identity theory perspective." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/11661.

Full text
Abstract:
The impact of identity on brand loyalty has taken precedence as an area of focus in recent marketing research. This has taken place in an era defined by technological revolution, which has created market disruptions and there are implications for customer–brand relationships. Nonetheless, the extant literature on brand loyalty does not extensively acknowledge the impact of socio-psychological attributes but rather functional utility maximisation. The brand loyalty literature has the notion that the perceived value of a brand is conceptualised and operationalised as a functional utilitarian value. Knowledge that illuminates how firms can reposition themselves to sustain brand loyalty when disruptions occur in today’s complex and globalised business environment is explored in this study, through empirical investigation into the phenomenon of brand switching behaviour among consumers in a specific competitive market, namely, the Smartphone Industry. The current study explores how resistance could be built from an identity theory perspective. As highlighted above, much emphasis has historically been placed on the functional utility of products at the expense of social meanings. Given the relative paucity of literature on identity and brand loyalty, this study adopts a grounded theory methodology based on a survey and a series of in-depth interviews across Ghana and the UK to access consumers’ insights and experiences of specific brands in the Smartphone industry. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and coded, utilising the three-stage process of analysing data; specifically, open, axial and selective coding. This study is the first to combine brand loyalty literature, identity theory and grounded theory to study the behaviour of brand switching in the Smartphone Industry. This study identified a gap in knowledge in the brand loyalty literature, as it focuses only on how brands perform under normal market conditions. Hence, this study provided consideration for market disruptions in the Smartphone industry. Empirical data from Smartphone users confirmed in this study that underlining factors which are non-utilitarian factors such as socio-psychological benefits, motivate consumers to continue buying the brands they buy. The study also established that the sustainability of brand loyalty could be accomplished from an identity theory perspective by adapting and advancing a customer–brand identification (CBI) model, to examine the phenomenon of brand switching in the Smartphone industry at a more matured and competitive stage.

Full text
Abstract:
This research is an attempt at deepening the understanding of hyped cryptocurrencies. A deductive nature is used where we attempt to estimate the linear dependencies of cryptocurrencies with four different time series models. Investigating linear dependencies of univariate time series offers the reader an understanding on how previous prices of cryptocurrencies affect future prices. The linear interdepencies for a multivariate scenario will provide an apprehension on how, and if, the cryptocurrency market is correlated. The dataset used consists of the prices between January 1, 2016 to March 31, 2019 of the four cryptocurrency rivals: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple and Litecoin. The modeling is performed by using autoregression and fitting on 80% of the data. Thereafter, the models are forecasted on the last 20% of the data in order to test the accuracy of the model. The four types of model are used in this thesis and are named by the abbreviations AR(p), MSAR(p), VAR(p) and MSVAR(p) where AR(p) represents an autoregressive model of order p; MSAR(p) represents a Markov-Switching autoregressive model of order p; VAR(p) represents a multivariate model for of the AR(p) also known as the vector autoregressive model of order p; finally MSVAR(p) stands for a Markov-Switching vector autoregressive model of order p. As cryptocurrencies are said to be very volatile, we hope that the Markov-Switching approach would help to classify the level of volatility into different regimes. Further, we anticipate that the fitted time series for each regime will offer a greater accuracy than the regular AR(p) and VAR(p) models. By using scale-dependent error estimators, the thesis concludes that the Markov-Switching approach does in fact improve the efficiency of chosen time series models for our cryptocurrencies.

Full text
Abstract:
The design of space-efficient support hardware for built-in self-testing (BIST) is of critical importance in the design and manufacture of VLSI circuits. This dissertation reports new space compression techniques for particular use in digital core based systems which facilitate designing compression networks using compact or pseudorandom test sets, with the target objective of minimizing the storage requirements for the module under test (MUT), while maintaining the fault coverage information. The suggested techniques take advantage of some well known concepts of conventional switching theory, particularly those of cover table and frequency ordering as commonly utilized in the minimization of switching functions, besides knowledge of Hamming distance, sequence weights, and derived sequences in the selection of specific gates for merger of an arbitrary number of output bit streams from the MUT. The outputs coming out of the space compactor may eventually be fed into a time compressor ( viz. syndrome counter) to derive the MUT signatures. The approaches developed to designing zero-aliasing space compressors utilizing additionally concepts of strong and weak compatibilities of response data outputs are novel in the sense that zero-aliasing is achieved without modification of the MUT, while maximal compaction is achieved in most cases in reasonable time utilizing some simple heuristics. The techniques proposed in the dissertation guarantee simple design with a high or full fault coverage for single stuck-line faults, with low CPU simulation time, and acceptable area overhead. Design algorithms are proposed in the dissertation, and the simplicity and ease of their implementations are demonstrated with numerous examples. Specifically, extensive simulation nuns on ISCAS 85 combinational and ISCAS 89 full-scan sequential benchmark circuits with FSIM, ATALANTA, HOPE, and COMPACTEST programs confirm the usefulness of the suggested approaches under conditions of both stochastic independence and dependence of single and multiple fine errors. A performance comparison of the designed space compressors with conventional linear parity tree space compactors as benchmark is also presented in the dissertation, where zero-aliasing is not realized, which demonstrates improved tradeoff for the new circuits between fault coverage and the MUT resources consumed contrasted with existing designs, thereby aiding to fully appreciate the enhancements. However, for the zero-aliasing compactors, advantages are clearly obvious.

Abstract:
Poor decision making among clinicians to transferring human immune deficiency virus (HIV) patients into second-line antiretroviral therapy (ART) has led to an increase in morbidity and mortality to people living with HIV (PLHIV). No clear barriers are known for clinicians not switching their patients. This is a descriptive qualitative research aimed to discover obstacles that influence clinicians' decision making to transferring patients into second-line ART despite higher level resistance to first-line ART. The researcher applied a participatory action research framework to solve the identified barriers with clinicians. Using the research questions the researcher explored reasons, perceived barriers and enabling factors for clinicians delay in making decision to transferring HIV patients into second-line ART. In-depth semistructured interviews were conducted with 30 participants. Six thematic areas (a) clinicians' capacity to diagnose treatment failure, (b) laboratory investigations, (c) availability, access, and tolerability to second-line ART, (d) clinicians' perceptions on ARV medicines, (e) clients' readiness for ARV medicines, and (f) adherence and retention to ARV medicines were analysed using STATA. Readiness, adherence and retention to ART, knowledge, competence and experience on ART , lack of viral load testing, and shortage of second-line ART were the common major barriers for clinicians in determining transferring patients into second-line ART. The government of Tanzania should acknowledge and create participation, responsibility, and commitment strategies to reduce the observed barriers. Findings of this study generates knowledge and provide actionable plans to help clinicians easily identify HIV patients who are in need of second-line ART.

Alnafisah, Mutleb Yossef. "Functional and Optimality-Theoretic Analyses of English-Arabic Code-switching in Religious Settings in the US." OpenSIUC, 2019. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/2484.

Abstract:
The majority of scholars’ work on code-switching within the sociolinguistic approach of Arabic has been mainly concentrated on the interaction of the Standard variety with other regional dialects in indigenous communities (Albirini, 2011; Bassiouney, 2006; Saeed, 1997; Soliman, 2008). Their work also extends to include the interaction of Arabic with other languages in informal and highly interactional settings (Abalhassan and Alshalawi, 2000; Safi, 1992; Sayahi, 2014). When it comes to the religious settings, their work has been solely devoted to Standard Arabic and Dialectal Arabic in Arabic countries and among Arabic native speakers (Albirini, 2011; Bassiouney, 2006; Saeed, 1997; Soliman, 2008). This thesis, in turn, investigates CS between Arabic and English in highly formal religious settings in the United States and among American Islamic preachers, non-native speakers of Arabic. It aims to enumerate the social functions of CS between English and Arabic and provides the internal optimal bilingual grammar of these speakers. To achieve these goals, two analyses have been conducted, the functional analysis and the optimality-theoretic analysis. The results of the first analysis revealed that preachers chiefly switch from English to Arabic for eight functions: (1) to use formulaic expressions; (2) to introduce direct quotations; (3) to show a level of education in the Islamic studies; (4) to show a level of education in the Arabic language; (5) to evoke Muslimness and Islamic affiliation; (6) to mark emphasis; (7) to stress the importance of a speech segment; and (8) to introduce rhyming stretches. On the other hand, they switch from Arabic to English mainly to fulfill two functions: (1) to translate the previous Arabic stretch; and (2) to simplify, explain, and clarify a segment that was previously mentioned in Arabic. The result of the optimality-theoretic analysis showed that the internal optimal bilingual grammar of American preachers is {FAITH, FACE} >> PERSPECTIVE >> {SOLIDARITY, POWER}.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis develops a stochastic model for satellite packet switching networks, using results from queueing theory that have been previously explored in modeling communication networks. This thesis also analyzes message queueing delay when users of the network are generating data at moderate to high rates. Average packet delay and average number of packets in the system are formulated. The model developed herein is applied to two cases. In the first case packet transmission and back off times are deterministic. In the second case packet transmission and back off times are exponentially distributed. The input parameters to this model are packet arrival rate, average packet transmission time, average back off time and probability of packet collision. The model yields average packet delay and average number of packets in the system. Methods to compute the probability of collision are presented.

Abstract:
The topic of this Thesis is magnetization dynamics on atomic length scales. A computational scheme, Atomistic Spin Dynamics, based on density functional theory, the adiabatic approximation and the atomic moment approximation is presented. Simulations are performed for chemically disordered systems, antiferromagnets and ferrimagnets and also systems with reduced dimensionality The autocorrelation function of the archetypical spin glass alloy CuMn is sampled in simulations following a quenching protocol. The aging regime can be clearly identified and the dependence of the relaxation on the damping parameter is investigated. The time evolution of pair correlation and autocorrelation functions has been studied in simulations of the dilute magnetic semiconductor GaMnAs. The dynamics reveal a substantial short ranged magnetic order even at temperatures at or above the ordering temperature. The dynamics for different concentrations of As antisites are discussed. Antiferromagnets offer opportunities for ultrafast switching, this is studied in simulations of an artificial antiferromagnet. For the right conditions, the cooperative effect of applied field torque and and the torque from the other sublattice enables very fast switching. The dynamics of bcc Fe precessing in a strong uniaxial anisotropy are investigated. It is demonstrated that the magnetization can shrink substantially due to a spin wave instability. The dynamics of a two-component model ferrimagnet at finite temperature are investigated. At temperatures where the magnetic system is close to the magnetic and angular momentum compensations points of the ferrimagnet, the relaxation in a uniaxial easy exis anisotropy resembles results in recent experiments on ferrimagnetic resonance. The different cases of uniaxial or colossal magnetic anisotropy in nanowires at different temperatures are compared. The magnon softening in a ferromagnetic monolayer is investigated, giving results that compare well with recent experiments. The effect of lattice relaxation can be treated in first principles calculations. Subsequent simulations captures the softening of magnons caused by reduced dimensionality and temperature.

Siegfried, Frank. "A cross-cultural study of consumer switching in the retail banking services sector." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2015. https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/a-crosscultural-study-of-consumer-switching-in-the-retail-banking-services-sector(898200e5-15ad-48e5-8e18-77706d4594d4).html.

Full text
Abstract:
The retail banking services sector, a key driver for global economic growth, faces drastic challenges, such as globalised competition and continuously changing customer expectations that call for an in-depth understanding of customer switching, particularly in Asia’s emerging markets. Research shows that minor reductions in switching can notably enhance profitability. Yet only insufficient or fragmented research to explain switching exists. For this study titled “A Cross-Cultural Study of Consumer Switching in the Retail Banking Services Sector” at The University of Manchester, completed in September 2014, Frank Siegfried identified the theory of planned behaviour as the most suitable framework, while Singapore served as a test bed in view of its diverse population. A qualitative pilot study was conducted (February to April 2010), consisting of 22 semi-structured interviews, in which a suitable definition of switching and a better understanding about the cross-cultural context of this study were developed. These insights were instrumental in the design of a new theoretical model, built on constructs that had not been combined in a single framework before, applying constructs of the theory of planned behaviour as the foundational framework, and subsequently integrating the concept of past behaviour, selected cultural dimensions from the GLOBE model and four distinct predisposing and precipitating factors. Next, a quantitative study was conducted (January to May 2013) and, after data cleaning, a quasi-representative sample of 1,431 cases was subjected to analysis. For comparability with other studies, both regression analysis (RA) and structural equation modelling (SEM) were performed. Notable results that were consistent in RA and SEM include: Attitude towards switching (attitude) successfully explained switching intention. Subjective norms had a positive effect on attitude, which implied a mediated effect of subjective norms on switching intention. Contradicting the initial hypothesis, a significant effect of perceived behavioural control on switching intention was negative. Past behaviour had a significant, but weak positive effect on attitude and switching intention, as well as an indirect positive effect on switching intention, mediated by attitude. Lack of trust positively affected switching intention. Service failure had a strong positive effect on switching intention, with perceived behavioural control moderating this effect. Performance orientation had a moderately strong effect on perceived behavioural control. High in-group collectivism negatively affected service failure. These results constitute the new Comprehensive Banking Service Switching Model (CBSSM). Interestingly, a large number of constructs and construct paths that played an important role in the literature could not be confirmed as significant contributors to the model. Overall, tests of model fit still showed a significant contribution of the proposed extensions to the foundational model. Weighting the importance of various constructs in a single framework enhances the understanding of switching of retail banking services in Singapore and offers new insights for strategic planning, particularly in the areas of branding, marketing, service operations and human capital management. Theoretical, methodological and managerial implications are discussed in detail.
