Abstract:
Several features of this compact passage have puzzled scholars ever since the discovery of the Aristotelian Constitution of the Athenians a century ago. First, did the Athenian Assembly really deliberate on all these disparate matters in the chief meeting of the sixth prytany, and if so, why? Second, why did it limit complaints (probolai) against sycophants to a total of six divided equally between citizens and metics? Since the answers we give to these questions are fundamental to our understanding of basic Athenian institutions, they deserve careful consideration. This paper will argue that the Assembly did deliberate on these matters at the same meeting and indeed that this was natural, since they are all symbolic, as well as practical, instruments for controlling behaviour inimical to the demos' interests. It will also suggest that the limitation on probolai against citizen and metic sycophants was introduced to safeguard against the sort of abuse of the label ‘sycophant’ that took place under the regime of the Thirty, and that the measures described in Ath. Pol. 43.5 were, therefore, most likely linked together in the early years of the restored democracy.

Maràs, Anastasios G. "The Issue of Rhetoric for Christian Apologists in the Second Century." Augustinianum 50, no. 2 (2010): 409–21. http://dx.doi.org/10.5840/agstm201050214.

Abstract:
Viewing rhetoric as a product of pagan culture, the Apologists take a negative stance toward it. For Justin the art of persuasion may be useful in all areas ofpublic life but it is useless when it comes to the metaphysical truth of Christianity. The strength to teach or interpret Christianity, Justin posits, comes from God, not rhetoric. For his part, Tatian dismisses forensic rhetoric on the grounds that it often subverts Christian ethics by defending injustice, sycophancy and money-making, in effect promoting that which is not virtuous. As for Theophilus, he places greater value on the substance and meaning of Christian purposes and less on the orator’s virtuosity and linguistic means of expression.

Mayer, Jeffrey L. "Niccolo’s Lesson: Machiavelli’s Advice to Policy Advisors." Public Voices 14, no. 2 (2017): 43. http://dx.doi.org/10.22140/pv.9.

Full text
Abstract:
Machiavelli thought that princes should be able to lie, but he wrote—and lived as if he believed—that policy advisors must tell the truth. To do less, he thought—to shape analyses to fit the preferences of powerful patrons—was to sacrifice both political utility and professional self-respect. But also, he knew that speaking truth to power is dangerous business. To lessen the risks, he counseled advisors to rely on boldness or, as conditions might require, to practice artful sycophancy (an echo of his advice to princes about imitating lions and foxes). The twist in Machiavelli’s story is that he could not follow his own advice. He should have known, but acted as if he didn’t, that advisors fail for the same reasons princes do—because of ignorance and an inability to adjust their methods to shifts in circumstance. In that sense, “Niccolo’s Lesson” is a cautionary tale that illuminates the duties, risks, and destinies of policy advisors in every age.

Abstract:
This article examines Stephen Chifunyise’s calculated focus on the domestic spaces – the family, personal relationships and the psycho-sexual dilemmas at the expense of the wider national socio-economic and political context during a period in Zimbabwe that has come to be known as the “decade of crisis”. Ignoring a plethora of social, economic and political challenges such as the collapse of a welfarist state, unprecedented inflation, political violence, sycophancy and corruption among others, the dramatist chooses to focus solely on the contradictions within the home and the family. The central question with which the article grapples is the ideological motivation behind this deliberate focus by the dramatist. Using Wall’s (1989) theory of the dialogue of the deaf in conjunction with Macherey’s (1978) theory of the “unsaid” in a text, the article argues that despite the author’s calculated omission or silence on the socio-economic and political realities, the average intelligent reader is not only able to read into the dramatist’s ideological position and motive but also the ugly reality that he is trying to cover up or hide from the reader.

In this dissertation we put together socio anthropological contributions to think about the gainful domestic service from a historical cultural perspective. The concept of domestic job and the notions of indecentsycophancyand authority, defended by Sennett, are taken as references for the empiric data analysis. Besides the bibliography review on the theme, we will approach the social imaginary –fed by long years of slavery -, to think about the ideological subtleties which give meaning and “shape” to the activity nowadays. The fieldwork was done inthe city of Recife, in the year of 2011, when fifteen maids were heard. The empiric data revealed differences on the perception and existence, particularly pointed by the generational representations. Roughly, the domestic job has acquired meanings of fatality (“natural” consequences of gender and class relations) to the older women while the younger ones noticed the occupation as secondary and temporary. The activityis strongly marked by ambivalences which are substantiated from day to day, but the affectivities developed do not sweeten the “social distances”between the subjects in the relationship. The obtained testimonies revealed that the full regulation of the profession in Brazil has a positive effect in the self-esteem of the maids. On the other hand, typical advantages from the “informal world”, like the “gift” exchange, are pointed by the professionals as relevant and positive aspects from what is worth at the domestic service. The feeling of excessive exploitation and the indecent sycophancywas revealed in different levels by almost all the interviewed, but it suffered variations according to the employment link: monthly or daily workers.

Dogru, Sedat. "Sycophant Wireless Sensor Networks Tracked By Sparsemobile Wireless Sensor Networks While Cooperativelymapping An Area." Phd thesis, METU, 2012. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12615139/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis the novel concept of Sycophant Wireless Sensors (SWS) is introduced. A SWS network is a static ectoparasitic clandestine sensor network mounted incognito on a mobile agent using only the agent&rsquo
s mobility without intervention. SWS networks not only communicate with each other through mobileWireless Sensor Networks (WSN) but also cooperate with them to form a global hybrid Wireless Sensor Network. Such a hybrid network has its own problems and opportunities, some of which have been studied in this thesis work. Assuming that direct position measurements are not always feasible tracking performance of the sycophant using range only measurements for various communication intervals is studied. Then this framework was used to create a hybrid 2D map of the environment utilizing the capabilities of the mobile network the sycophant. In order to show possible applications of a sycophant deployment, the sycophant sensor node was equipped with a laser ranger as its sensor, and it was let to create a 2D map of its environment. This 2D map, which corresponds to a height dierent than the follower network, was merged with the 2D map of the mobile network forming a novel rough 3D map. Then by giving up from the need to properly localize the sycophant even when it is disconnected to the rest of the network, a full 3D map of the environment is obtained by fusing 2D map and tracking capabilities of the mobile network with the 2D vertical scans of the environment by the sycophant. And finally connectivity problems that arise from the hybrid sensor/actuator network were solved. For this 2 new connectivity maintenance algorithms, one based on the helix structures of the proteins, and the other based on the acute triangulation of the space forming a Gabriel Graph, were introduced. In this new algorithms emphasis has been given to sparseness in order to increase fault tolerance to regional problems. To better asses sparseness a new measure, called Resistance was introduced, as well as another called updistance.
