Abstract:
This research was motivated by the low initial reading ability of Indonesian elementary school students. This is because teachers still use conventional learning methods where learning is only centered on the teacher while students are not involved much or are not active in learning. In this condition, the syllabic method (silaba) becomes an alternative solution method, because the syllabic method involves interaction between students and teachers, so that there is no longer any learning that only dominates the teacher or only dominates smart students. This research also aims to review how the syllable method (sylaba) affects the beginning reading abilities of lower grade elementary school students. The method used for the review is systematic or Systematic Literature Review (SLR) by analyzing research results that have been published nationally relating to the syllable method (sylaba) on the initial reading ability of lower grade elementary school students for Indonesian language lessons, sample analysis are 15 journals that have been published in the last 10 years. The journal discusses the syllable method, based on the findings of the analysis of the syllable method (sylaba) which has a positive influence. From each article or journal that has been analyzed, there are differences, but overall this research shows the conclusion that the syllable method for beginning Indonesian reading skills in lower grade elementary school students has a significant influence on elementary school students' reading abilities.

Abstract:
This research examined pronunciation errors in syllabic consonant sounds uttered by fourth-semester students in the English and literature departments. This study aimed to find out how fourth-semester students read the text and pronounce syllabic consonant sounds. The theories of English phonetics and phonology were proposed by Peter Roach and Corder's theory of error analysis. The data was gathered using the descriptive qualitative method. The researcher used the phone as an instrument to record herself reading aloud text. According to the findings, the students made three errors: addition, omission, and selection. First, they began using the schwa sound with long syllabic consonant words. Second, some syllables were removed, which was most common in the final syllable. Third, they identified where a syllable in a word should go because they heard a vowel sound that should not be there or a sound in a syllable that was in the wrong location. This mistake occurs in the middle and last syllables

Abstract:
Syllable card media is a tool aimed at enhancing students' early reading skills by visualizing images and syllables that are affixed to a board. The purpose of this study is to investigate the Influence of Syllable Card Media on Reading Ability Quality of Students. The research was conducted at a public elementary school in Deli Serdang, with the subjects being second semester first-grade students, consisting of two classes: class IA and 1B. The research utilized a quantitative method with a Quasi-Experimental approach. The results from the Wilcoxon signed-rank test indicated an Asymp. Sig (2-tailed) value of 0.000, which is smaller than 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05). This leads to the conclusion that the "Hypothesis is Accepted," implying a difference in students' early reading ability using media between the Pre-Test and Post-Test. Thus, it is evident that Syllable Card Media has an Influence on the Quality of Reading Ability among Students. The recommendation from this research is for educators to utilize media in teaching to enhance early reading skills.

Abstract:
Purpose The current study investigated the therapeutic potential of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on speech intelligibility, speech-related physiological and vocal functions among post-stroke dysarthric patients. Method Nine chronic post-stroke dysarthric patients were randomly assigned to the stimulation or sham group. The stimulation group received 2mA of anodal tDCS over the left inferior primary motor cortex for 15 minutes, while the sham group received 30s of stimulation under the same settings. All the participants received 10 daily 15 minutes of individualized speech therapy targeting their dominant phonological process or phonemes with the greatest difficulty. The outcome measures included (1) perceptual analysis of single words, passage reading and diadochokinetic rate, (2) acoustic analysis of a sustained vowel, and (3) kinematic analysis of rapid syllable repetitions and syllable production in sentence, conducted before and after the treatment. Results The results revealed that both the stimulation and sham groups had improved perceptual speech intelligibility at the word level, reduced short rushes of speech during passage reading, improved rate during alternating motion rate, AMR-kha1, and improved articulatory kinematics in AMR-tha1 and syllables /tha1/ and /kha1/ production in sentence. Compared to the sham group, the stimulation group showed significant improvement in articulatory kinematics in AMR-kha1 and syllable /kha1/ production in sentence. The findings also showed that anodal stimulation led to reduced shimmer value in sustained vowel /a/ phonation, positive changes in articulatory kinematics in AMR-tha1 and syllables /pha1/ and /kha1/ production in sentence at the post treatment measure. In addition to positive effects on articulatory control, reduced perturbation of voice amplitude documented in the stimulation group post treatment suggests possible tDCS effects on the vocal function. Conclusions The current study documented the beneficial effects of anodal tDCS over the primary motor cortex on speech production and suggested that combined tDCS and speech therapy may promote recovery from post-stroke dysarthria.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a lip reading method based on convolutional neural networks applied to Concatenated Three Sequence Keyframe Image (C3-SKI), consisting of (a) the Start-Lip Image (SLI), (b) the Middle-Lip Image (MLI), and (c) the End-Lip Image (ELI) which is the end of the pronunciation of that syllable. The lip area’s image dimensions were reduced to 32×32 pixels per image frame and three keyframes concatenate together were used to represent one syllable with a dimension of 96×32 pixels for visual speech recognition. Every three concatenated keyframes representing any syllable are selected based on the relative maximum and relative minimum related to the open lip’s width and height. The evaluation results of the model’s effectiveness, showed accuracy, validation accuracy, loss, and validation loss values at 95.06%, 86.03%, 4.61%, and 9.04% respectively, for the THDigits dataset. The C3-SKI technique was also applied to the AVDigits dataset, showing 85.62% accuracy. In conclusion, the C3-SKI technique could be applied to perform lip reading recognition.

Abstract:
This study is a study related to the technique of spelling closed syllables in Malay (KVK). The objective of this study is to describe the technique of spelling closed syllables regressively (from back to front) by using Malay syllabification theory. The research method used in this study is a qualitative method that using the Malay syllabification theory modified from Goldsmith's syllabification theory (2011). The qualitative study used in this study is a bibliographic method, which involves reading written materials related to Goldsmith's (2011) syllabification theory and its application to Malay syllables. The findings of this study are an explanation related to the technique of spelling closed syllables (KVK) in Malay language. This technique of spelling closed syllables begins with the sounding of phonemes or letters that follow the International Phonetic Alphabets (IPA) phoneme sound and then the process of spelling closed syllables regressively, that is from right to left. This spelling process is that the vowel in the nucleus position needs to be combined with the consonant in the coda position to form a rhyming sound (VK). In the next step, the consonant in the onset position will be combined with the previous rhyme sound to produce the sound of the closed syllable KVK. In conclusion, this study is expected to be able to make it easier for teachers to teach pupils or children about closed syllables in Malay language.

Abstract:
To advance the study of lip-reading recognition in accordance with Chinese pronunciation norms, we carefully investigated Mandarin tone recognition based on visual information, in contrast to that of the previous character-based Chinese lip reading technique. In this paper, we mainly studied the vowel tonal transformation in Chinese pronunciation and designed a lightweight skipping convolution network framework (SCNet). And, the experimental results showed that the SCNet was sensitive to the more detailed description of the pitch change than that of the traditional model and achieved a better tone recognition effect and outstanding antiinterference performance. In addition, we conducted a more detailed study on the assistance of the deep texture information in lip-reading recognition. We found that the deep texture information has a significant effect on tone recognition, and the possibility of multimodal lip reading in Chinese tone recognition was confirmed. Similarly, we verified the role of the SCNet syllable tone recognition and found that the vowel and syllable tone recognition accuracy of our model was as high as 97.3%, which also showed the robustness of our proposed method for Chinese tone recognition and it can be widely used for tone recognition.

The learning media used by teachers at MI Darul Ulum in improving students' reading skills, especially class I, still uses the syllable method so that students can only recognize letters and memorize some syllables. To overcome this, all researchers suggest using new media to improve students' reading skills. Drawing board media is media that consists of picture elements and can be disassembled with tools using small nails. These problems are discussed through Classroom Action Research (CAR) using two cycles. The results obtained from this study are that the use of drawing board media can improve the reading ability of MI Darul Ulum class 1 students with a total of 9 students. This can be proven from the significant increase in students' learning mastery and classical absorption from the two cycles that have been carried out, the indications are the increase in the average score of pre-cycle students, namely 58%, cycle I 72%, cycle II 83%. Likewise, the percentage of students' classical learning completeness also experienced a lot of improvement, namely 33% in the pre-cycle, 56% in the first cycle and 100% in the second cycle.

Abstract:
Background: Reading fluency is essential for our functioning in the literate society in which we live. Reading expressiveness or prosody, along with speed and accuracy, are considered key aspects of fluent reading. Prosodic patterns may vary, not being the same in children learning to read as in adulthood. But little is known about the prosodic characteristics and reading fluency of people with neurodegenerative diseases that causes language impairment and reading difficul- ties, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Objective: The aim of this work was to study reading fluency in AD, considering reading speed, ac- curacy and reading prosody. Method: The participants were 20 healthy elderly Spanish adults, and 20 AD patients, aged 64-88 years. An experimental text was designed, that included declarative, exclamatory, and interrogative sentences, words with different stresses and low-frequency words. The reading of the participants was recorded and analyzed using Praat software. Results: The AD group showed significantly longer reading duration, both at the syllable level and at the word and sentence level. These patients also committed more pauses between words, which were also longer, and more reading errors. The control group showed a variation of the syllabic F0 in the three types of sentences, while these variations only appeared in declarative ones in the AD group. Conclusion: The pauses, along with the slight pitch variations and the longer reading times and er- rors committed, compromise the reading fluency of people with AD. Assessment of this reading feature could be interesting as a possible diagnostic marker for the disease.

Abstract:
Most of the classic texts in Kurdish literature are poems. Knowing the meter of the poems is helpful for correct reading, a better understanding of the meaning, and avoiding ambiguity. This paper presents a rule-based method for the automatic classification of the poem meter for the Central Kurdish language also known as Sorani. The metrical system of Kurdish poetry is divided into three classes quantitative, syllabic, and free verses. As the vowel length is not phonemic in the language, there are uncertainties in syllable weight and meter identification. The proposed method generates all the possible situations and then, by considering all lines of the input poem and the common meter patterns of Kurdish poetry, identifies the most probable meter type and pattern of the input poem. Evaluation of the method on a dataset from VejinBooks Kurdish corpus resulted in 97.3% of precision in meter type and 96.2% of precision in pattern identification.

This research aims to elucidate whether a syllable-based automated method yields results akin to manual processes when calculating speaking rates across diverse groups [i.e., individuals with dysarthria secondary to multiple sclerosis (MS) or Parkinson’s disease (PD), and healthy controls]. Moreover, this study examines the performance of an automated method across three distinct speech tasks: isolated sentences, paragraph reading, and spontaneous speech. The methodology involves adjusting parameters within a version of a published script specifically designed for calculating speaking rate through syllable detection (Praat Script Syllable Nuclei; de Jong et al., 2021). Using a sample of 60 speakers (20 MS, 20 PD, and 20 healthy controls), this study aims to evaluate the accuracy and validity of an automated script in calculating speaking rate. Ultimately, these findings are intended to guide speaking rate measurement of dysarthria in research and clinical practice.

Abstract:
The low reading proficiency of children served as the driving force for this study. This poor performance is believed to be caused by a lack of stimulation suited to the stages of early childhood development, particularly in relation to the students' disinterest in the teaching materials. The purpose of this study is to ascertain how using syllable-rich bottle cap media can help first-grade students at MI Darul Hidayah in Bangsalsari District, Jember Regency, improve their reading abilities. Pre- and post-tests are used in this kind of research, including control and experimental groups. The 22 students that made up the population of all subjects were split into two groups (control and experiment). The method used to gather data on the reading abilities of first-graders at MI Darul Hidayah, Gambirono Village, Bangsalsari District, Jember Regency, was asking students written questions. The SPSS software, version 25, is used in the data collection method. The average pre-test reading skills of the experimental class differ from the post-test reading skills of the experimental class test, as shown by the sig (2-failed) value of 0.00 < 0.05, according to the findings of the hypothesis testing using the paired sample t test. Aside from that, the experimental class's average pre-test score was 62.37, which was lower than the class's average post-test score of 83.18. So it can be concluded that there is an influence of using syllabic bottle cap media in improving the reading skills of grade 1 students at MI Darul Hidayah, Gambirono Village, Bangsalsari District. Thus the hypothesis in this research is accepted.

Abstract:
Purpose: Vocal fry (VF), a low-pitched, grating voice quality, appears to be trending among young women. Current research lacks consensus of listeners' perceptions associated with VF. This study investigated practicing speech-language pathologists' (SLPs) perceptions of graduate speech-language pathology students who speak with VF. Method: Thirty-two graduate students were recorded reading the Rainbow Passage and providing a brief monologue. VF was detected perceptually and acoustically for all 32 students' recordings. For the 127-syllable passage, percent of VF (%VF) ranged from 2.36% (three syllables) to 40.16% (51 syllables) with an average of 12.25% (15 syllables). Twelve recorded passages were selected and sorted into two statistically significant groups ( p = .001; seven with the most %VF and five with the least). Passage samples were randomly uploaded into a Qualtrics survey. Practicing SLPs listened to each sample and provided categorical and visual analog ratings for voice pleasantness and perceived speaker competence, education, hirability, and professionalism. Results: The online survey was completed by 150 experienced SLPs who spanned differing geographical locations, work settings, and years of experience. Chi-square tests of independence and independent-samples t tests revealed statistically significant findings for all rated characteristics, indicating that VF samples were less pleasant, and their users less competent, hirable, educated, and professional. Conclusions: These findings support those of Gottliebson et al. (2007), whereby 32% of our cohort had ≥ 15 instances of VF during passage reading, and those of Anderson et al. (2014), that VF negatively impacts how a speaker is perceived. Speech-language pathology graduate students should be cognizant of VF use, as they seek to secure competitive externships and jobs.

Full text
Abstract:
The article considers the methods, the major stages and results of the study of how gender influences the syntagmatic properties of phrasal rhythm in the course of extemporaneous reading aloud in contemporary American English. The given description is the second stage of the study focusing on the influence of gender on phrasal rhythm in the type of language activity being considered. Previously, gender specific male and female “repertoires” of statistically valid types of rhythmical groups (i.e. the paradigmatic properties of rhythmical groups) were determined. A rhythmical group is understood as a suprasyllabic prosodic unit comprising one stressed and a number of unstressed syllables adjacent to it. The position and the number of the unstressed syllables in the rhythmical group determine its type. At this stage of the study, the peculiarities of the combinability of different types of rhythmical groups and their valency are being scrutinized. In the realm of combinability peculiarities of rhythmical groups, the statistics of the types and kinds of observed contacts are being analyzed: contrastive/non-contrastive increase/decrease of rhythm, the rate of rhythm changes as well as cases of unchanged rhythm. Statistically valid genderfactored differences are being determined. Among the statistical tools the following were mostly employed: measures of central tendency (the mean value), measures of variability (dispersion) and the probability theory (to determine the valency). It has been established that the type of the language activity, which is being considered here, allowing almost no freedom of the speakers to organize the phrasal rhythm at their own discretion, greatly influences the results. Thus, male and female manifestations in a vast number of indicators show no statistically relevant differences, especially when group mean values are considered. The majority of statistically valid gender specific differences are observed only in the values of dispersion, which show the degree of uniformity, immutability of the events. The discussion section of the article represents the author’s speculation about the accuracy and efficiency of the auditory-functional method that is being employed to determine the contrastive/non-contrastive rhythm modulation: by the difference in the number of unstressed syllables between the adjacent rhythmical groups without regard given to their positions relevant to the stressed syllable. Eventually the author concludes that the controversy of the method is to be smoothed out by the acoustic analysis of the actual data.
