Abstract:
Syllabus, as one of the most important tools of teaching-learning, must contain necessary contents. A clearly designed, well-presented syllabus with the contents following the best practices in the field is a prerequisite for effective teaching. To analyze the contents of the syllabi of English language development courses of Bangladeshi university English departments, this study prepared a checklist of an ideal syllabus following the relevant literature and theories. The study has found that the contents in those syllabuses are presented in a haphazard way. They cannot the meet most of the criteria of an ideal syllabus in terms of contents. Most of them have only some learning topics or items as contents; and names of some books as materials. Regarding the other aspects like goals and objectives, assessment, rubric, teaching-learning methodologies, types of useful materials etc., the syllabuses present a very poor scenario. In the presentation and organisation, a linear fashion is found seemingly without any grading.

Abstract:
ICT education provides the unlimited resources to collect and analyze data, create presentation using ICT tools and acquire depth of knowledge. This research aims to design ICT competence-integrated syllabuses of reading courses (Literal Reading, Critical Reading, Affective Reading, and Syntopical Reading). The types of syllabus for reading courses in this research is process-oriented syllabuses. This research adapted Design and Development Research (DDR). The stages of DDR are need analysis, evaluation, revision, and evaluation. An analysis was also conducted the CEFR-based English reading to provide language learners a set of language qualification to master. The data sources to analyze existing English reading syllabuses were taken from five different universities in Indonesia. The result of sub RQ 1 found that the ICT competences are mostly integrated in teaching methods, and assessments. For the ICT tools in the existing syllabus mostly used computer, laptop, LCD, word and presentation software. UNESCO competence in the existing syllabus mostly integrated implicitly and explicitly in technology literacy. Learning processes mostly appear in the existing syllabus were identifying, discussing, and analyzing. Sub RQ 2 found the integration of ICT into syllabus component can be applied by infusing the ICT indicator into the syllabus components, and the integration of CEFR into learning materials to see the levels of the students. Sub RQ 3 found designing ICT competences-integrated syllabuses of reading courses used process-oriented for the type of syllabus. The components of syllabus that integrated in reading syllabuses were course description, learning outcomes, learning objective, materials, teaching method, assessments, and resources.

Abstract:
The development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has greatly affected the field of education. ICT allow for a higher quality lessons through collaboration with teachers in planning and preparing resources. ICT also develop some writing skills: spelling, grammar, punctuation, editing and re-drafting. ICTs appear as a strategy to improve learners’ difficulties and provide students’ growth in the writing skills. Therefore, this research aims to design ICT competences – integrated writing syllabuses for English Language Education Study Program (ELESP) by analyzing the existing writing syllabuses from five universities in Indonesia. The analysis involved the ICT Competences proposed by UNESCO, Digital Media Descriptors of English Profiling Grid (EPG) and other ICT based – theories. The researcher employed Design and Development Research (DDR) as a research design and qualitative research as the research method. The used stages of DDR in this study are conducted need analysis; stating the objectives, developing the preliminary syllabus, evaluate the preliminary syllabus and revising a syllabus prototype. The data sources of this research are 14 existing syllabuses of writing courses of undergraduate English Language Education Study Program. The result of the research revealed that the ICT competences are mostly integrated in the component of Teaching Method and Media in the syllabuses. The highest level of ICT competences applied in the existing syllabus is Knowledge Deepening level. Although, the integration or infusion of ICT competences were explicit and implicit mentioned in the syllabuses of writing subjects. The research then provide the procedure of ICT integration and the design the ICT competences integrated – writing syllabuses; Basic Writing, Professional Writing, Creative Writing, and Academic Writing. The proposed syllabus implemented the skill-based syllabus.

Abstract:
The objective of this paper is to present part of the research results on Slovenian geography syllabi, which began in an online chat room in the framework of the Meeting of Slovenian Geographers in Maribor in September 2017. Afterwards, it expanded beyond the set framework and continued until April 2018 via the online group ‘Geolista’, in which geography teachers are included. The aim of the research was to determine what kind of syllabi geography teachers in Slovenia want for geography lessons at the primary and secondary levels of education. This paper presents the opinions of the respondents about the basic conceptual orientation of the syllabus for primary school, as well as about its foundation and scope. The respondents evaluated the adequacy of the existing elements of the syllabus and provided suggestions for supplementing/transforming it. The 122 respondents evaluated the existing concept of the geography syllabus for primary school as good, but at the same time, they expressed a wish for a more issue-oriented syllabus. The majority favours a more general and, above all, shorter syllabus for geography lessons in primary school, accompanied by a handbook on how to execute it. A crucial message is that any modernisation of the syllabus should be undertaken in a timely and systematic manner, with sufficient participation of all stakeholders.

Abstract:
Nowadays universities in Vietnam have begun to update their curricula by adopting a backward design with a focus on students’ learning outcomes to replace the old-fashioned forward model. However, to have a constructive alignment is a problem they have to face. This situation has prompted this case study research in May 2020, intending to examine a curriculum to find out whether it is coherent in terms of its main components – objectives, syllabus, methodology, and evaluation. The findings of the study indicate that for this case, although the curriculum was claimed to be of a backward design with learning outcomes as program objectives, it turned out to follow a forward one with more focus on knowledge transfer than competency development. In particular, as the program learning objectives were still written according to knowledge transmission, it was not constructively aligned with the three main components of syllabus, methodology and evaluation: The syllabi were mainly based on the experience of the experts in the field or syllabus designers, the innovation of the methodology as directed by the university with a shift of focus from the lecturer to learners was still interpreted rigidly and mechanically, and the evaluation of student learning was generally claimed to be criterion-referenced only without any elaboration for each syllabus.

The last two decades in applied linguistics—which roughly coincide with the evolution of the communicative approach in language teaching—have seen the development of a number of language teaching innovations, including the notional/functional syllabus, the process syllabus, the Natural Approach, the procedural syllabus, and task-based language teaching. All of these proposals have contributed in important ways to an understanding of theoretical issues related to designing innovative language syllabuses. But it is only rather recently that applied linguists have begun to investigate the problems associated with implementing these innovations.

[English abstract]The objective of this work is to show the present state of education as far as collection development , in the new technological environment in which we are immersed, besides of informig about the results of a study carried out in the international scope of faculties and departments of Library and Information Science (LIS) through their Web pages, by means of the revision as much of the courses that contemplate the education of collection development , as of the specific syllabus. The results of the study indicate that, at the present time, the English-speaking countries are those that offer specialized courses developing collection and those that have their education integrated in the syllabus. In most of cases, education one takes place within the second cycle and with prerequirements for inscription. On the contrary, mainly in many Schools and Faculties of Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa, the index of specific courses on collection development is very low. Another new field that also is approached in this work is education of virtual library providing data of the proposed courses in the universities visited, since, in their contents it always appears collection development.

Abstract:
The never ending argument among linguists and teachers about whether reading difficulties of the non native speakers of English are a reading problem or a language problem is an interesting study to start with. This was one of the questions examined in the study leading to the development of an ESP syllabus for undergraduate students at Bogor Agricultural University (IPB). Chapter One outlines the current English course at IPB where the focus of language teaching is on teaching grammar and reading. Chapter Two looks at the theoretical background and the development of ESP as well as the role of the ESP teachers which is different from the role of General English teachers. Since reading is the only target skill students need to acquire, Chapter Three looks at the theory of reading, outlines necessary reading skills and examines a 'good1 reading teacher. Chapter Four consists of a study and its analysis into whether difficulties in reading is a reading problem or a language problem. These findings are expected to give a clearer idea to the teachers of reading about the problems encountered by the students in reading English texts so they can decide whether the focus of the course should be on grammar development or reading development. Chapter Five discusses several types of syllabus as well as relating to the importance of needs analysis in designing a course, and suggests an outline syllabus for the IPB students i.e. the proportional syllabus including the profile of communication needs, aims and objectives of the course, language content, and the syllabus content.

Abstract:
This study aims to outline, describe, and analyse, using interviews, phenomenology and Marxism, the manner in which EFL teachers in Sweden have experienced the methodological impacts and the ideological implications of the 2011 syllabus reforms. By means of phenomenological reduction, this study aims to accurately represent the life-world of the Swedish EFL professional. Doing so yields insight into the connections between ideology, syllabi, teaching methodologies, and the manner in which these are experienced. The study is based on a text analysis of the 2011 syllabus grounded in Marxist philosophy and four interviews with teachers active in southern Sweden. The design of the interviews was drawn from the phenomenological approach, meaning that the teachers were asked to describe and conceptualise freely. In this manner the phenomena will occur as they are, enabling the researcher to describe without intruding, and extrapolate without interrupting. The interviews revealed the syllabus to be a document with which EFL professionals have little quarrel. Its communicative approach was well-received by the teachers, but by no means overwhelmingly revolutionary. Its openness and interpretative aspects were positive and negative, as it created both freedoms and risks in terms of content and assessment. In ideological terms, the syllabus represented a skill-value relation, where skills and knowledge are subject to criteria of usefulness and marketability within the learners’ future work life.

Abstract:
Within Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) the 1999 HPE syllabus was implemented between 1999 and 2001. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the implementation of the 1999 Queensland HPE syllabus in three BCE primary schools of varying enrolment numbers. The research problem is:.How developed is the implementation of the new HPE syllabus in BCE schools?. The data collection was guided by the following research questions:- How are teachers in these BCE schools implementing the HPE curriculum documents? What readily accessible resources do schools have to assist with the implementation of Health and Physical Education?. What are teachers. perceptions with regard to the HPE Key Learning Area? What are the children.s perceptions of the HPE Key Learning Area? What implementation strategies are required to optimize HPE practices in BCE schools? This study is significant for the feedback it may provide to BCE of the HPE syllabus implementation process and in informing BCE of the current status of the HPE key learning area within a sample of systemic Catholic primary schools. The findings have the potential to contribute to the BCE Strategic Renewal Framework currently occurring within BCE schools for all curriculum areas and planned for completion by the end of 2006. This research has been designed within a constructionist paradigm. An interpretivist study was conducted employing symbolic interactionism. This qualitative, interpretive study is most appropriate as meanings were constructed. The case study methodology was chosen to construct meaning through capturing the context of each school. The sites for the three case studies involved: one small sized BCE primary school (less than 200 students); one medium sized BCE primary school (200 - 400 students); and one large sized BCE primary school (over 400 students). The participants included teachers and students from the respective schools. The data gathering strategies used were; semi-structured and focus group interviews, reflective journal note taking, observations, questionnaire and document analysis. The research concluded that factors which led to the decline in Australian HPE during the 1980s and early 1990s may have contributed to impeding the implementation challenges formulated by BCE. This was evidenced within the three BCE primary schools by unequal allocation of teaching resources, equipment, facilities, HPE teachers and HPE teacher release time for sports coordination. It appears that the implementation process ceased prematurely before all schools had had sufficient time and preparation to design whole school HPE programs. Teachers lacked understandings of practical ways to implement the social justice underpinnings of the syllabus and some school principals were unaware of the necessity of employing qualified HPE specialist teachers. The research revealed that school principals play a significant role in the implementation of the 1999 HPE syllabus, a role made more imperative by the absence of BCE HPE Curriculum Officers and systemic HPE professional development. Therefore, the HPE key learning area requires further system level support and attention so that the 1999 HPE syllabus can be implemented successfully in all BCE primary schools, enabling curriculum change to occur.

Abstract:
This is a two-part study dealing with the curriculum, school leaving examinations and History as a school subject in England and South Africa. Part One is a developmental study. Developments in the curriculum of both countries since the Second World War are traced. In England this period is characterised by a shift from a somewhat laissez faire approach of the authorities at Whitehall to the curriculum of individual schools to the prescription that seems inherent in the National Curriculum. The outstanding development in South Africa during this period has been the introduction of a system of differentiated education. In contrast to minor developments in the South African school leaving examination system, England has witnessed the consolidation of the two-tier GCE and CSE system into a single examination at 16+, the GCSE. In discussing developments in History as a school subject, one is struck by the growth of the "new history" in England (this is described in some detail) against the relative lack of development (at "official" syllabus level) in South Africa where the subject remains rooted in the "traditional", chronological, content-based approach. Part Two of this study compares the current situation in England and South Africa at both the macro (ie. curriculum and school leaving examination systems) and micro (ie. History as a subject in the curriculum) levels. At the macro level the curriculum and school leaving examination systems in both England and South Africa are contrasted and one notes an increasing trend towards centralization in both countries. At the micro level use is made of "official" syllabuses and examination papers to contrast the "new history" approach in England with the "traditional" approach in South Africa. In the conclusion two broad possibilities for curriculum reform in South Africa are considered: Broad reform across the curriculum on the one hand and reforms in History on the other

In this essay, I intent to examine history as a school subject in Swedish compulsory school (for children aged 7-16), it contains mostly an analysis of the syllabus for history in the three latest curriculums Lgr 69, Lgr 80 and Lpo 94. The main purpose of the essay is to illuminate the development and the change history as a subject has gone through during this specific time, and my will is also to illustrate the view on knowledge and learning that is revealed in the syllabus for history in today’s curriculum (Lpo 94).

The survey shows that in Swedish compulsory school, history as a subject has changed significantly. During the examined years, the contents have been exceptionally broadened and that has lead to increasing demands on the students as it has gone from being directed to the individual and its contiguous history with shorter outlooks on the rest of the world, to requiring the individual to be able to see and understand other parts of the world and different time, on the basis of it’s own history and culture. According to my survey, this has lead to problems in the students learning ability. The curriculum as it is presented today demands a deeper kind of knowledge than one can expect from all students since far from all have the capacity to reach this sort of deeper knowledge.

The purpose of this essay is to examine how four of the teachers employed in Huddinge municipality look at the language developing aspects of their teaching, and how their views relate to the curriculum and the national and local syllabi of the subject Swedish within upper level of compulsory school and upper secondary school. The municipality's ambitions and aims with language development as a prioritized area functions as a background throughout the essay.

The main issues concern the teacher's views on language development, their opinions about the course syllabi, the teachers' roles in relation to language development, and their attitude towards the Huddinge municipality's ambition to prioritize language development. Information has been gathered through semi-structured interviews with working teachers, and through analysis of the syllabus documents using a modified level-analysis model. The empirical material is related to several theoretical perspectives, such as socio-cultural perspectives on learning, and curriculum theory.

The main results state that teachers very much emphasize the social and communicative functions of language, and also that reading is stressed as important for good language development. The curricula and syllabi are regarded as supportive tools; however they are not used very frequently in the everyday work. The municipality's ambitions regarding language development are known to the teachers, but they would like to see coordination on a municipal level when it comes to the various language development related projects within the municipality. The teachers also request more occasions for exchanging experiences and dialogue with others.

Abstract In this study, the role-playing game Final Fantasy 7 was analysed in regards of its qualities for English language development. Areas concerning language, specifically vocabulary, and video games explored in this study were academic words, words that express time, collocations, frequency, and keywords. Other areas investigated in this study are video games in connection to the syllabus for English, students’ outside of school interests, and implications for teaching. Data from a corpus-based vocabulary analysis showed that the players of Final Fantasy 7 will encounter a rich variety of words and linguistic features. Further, the text of Final Fantasy 7 shares a lot of the same qualities with texts from English 5 and 6, concerning academic words. Although, an analysis of keywords in the game and in the school texts also showed some differences, mainly in terms of grammatical variations, which indicate that Final Fantasy 7 can function as a complement to typical school texts.

Abstract:
The following dissertation aimed to comprise the process of construction of the new integrated syllabus in a Business Administration major, identifying the space that education for sustainable development (ESD) holds, based on the Cultural-Historical Activity Theory. To achieve the goal, it was necessary to understand the general context of action, mapping the development of other Higher Education Institutions of the city, being possible to embrace the fact that there are some noticeable differences when going through a more or even in a comparison, however, it is clear that for the general public, the nuances that would be the differential of the majors are little highlighted. The improved understanding of the institution and major was also necessary, basing its main events over the years of existence. The major has been active since 1999 and this was the second amendment of the original syllabus, which brought together the integration of activities among three majors, namely, Business Administration, Accounting, and Economics; from proposing the establishment of an Integrated Business School. The data analysis was from the view and perception of Business Administration faculty members. Considering the understanding of the context, the unit of analysis and the effort to change the syllabus, the Cultural-Historical Activity Theory has been chosen, providing a view on the tensions and contradictions in the activities of the actors, being used as a theoretical and methodological baseline. The research developed has been classified as qualitative, descriptive, through a case study, reflecting the unique characteristics of the organization, major and faculty members interviewed. The data collection reflected the willingness of some projections strategies to the major: (i) comprehensive training of professors at Moodle, in order to provide a larger portfolio of alternatives in the classroom; (ii) the creation of a themed room so that many courses can take place simultaneously, and (iii) the construction of a database with the availability of companies for technical visits, strengthening the proposition of putting together theory and practice. Regarding the analysis of the activity system, it was perceived that the expansion of the object of the activity, according to the initial proposal, fostering the creation of the Integrated School of Business, has not happened. The tensions and contradictions during the studies and meetings to change the syllabus demonstrated that the process focused on analyzing subjects common to the three majors, something not mischaracterized as important within the process, but without the possibility of expansion of the object in relation to the initial proposal posed. Notwithstanding, the faculty of Business Administration get to release a methodological tool of interesting constructive power, providing the other teachers of the major the possibility of experiencing joint activities, aiming to interdisciplinary activities called Integrative Seminar. Regarding the space that education for sustainable development (ESD) holds in the courses, there are still limiting factors even in relation to teachers’ education, despite being an imperative to respondents, the need for integration and discussion of the subject in any area, not only guided by the existence of a course to deal with such issues in the major. The suggestion of work regarding the next syllabus change is that it is followed and guided more closely by the Dean’s Office or even by a professor elected to do so, in order to better understand the process and mediate discussions, flow of information, feedback between strategic management and faculty for each major.

Abstract:
Inclusive teaching and learning is central to our educational mission. In this project, we used a whole-institution approach to make our institution’s inclusive objectives concrete and specific. We aimed to develop ways to capture our own community’s goals and objectives in a ‘living document’, a syllabus template in which insights from educational literature on diversity and inclusion are presented alongside the voices and practices of members of our own community of practice (CoP). We created the syllabus template by using the literature to list elements of inclusive design, inclusive delivery, inclusive assessment, and learning-focused syllabi, then identifying examples of those elements in syllabi of local experienced practitioners, and deepening the good practices in interviews with the experienced practitioners. The final syllabus template presents authentic practices from local syllabi, with explanations of the relevance of those examples and reference to educational literature, links to teaching tools, and contact-information for individual colleagues. The shared syllabus template deliberately situates academic development within the practice of the local CoP. We found that even the most experienced practitioners find it challenging to work on inclusive practices, which is all the more reason to stimulate a collaborative approach.

Abstract:
Recent changes in higher education policy in Colombia (South America) have forced educational institutions and universities to consider reducing undergraduate engineering programs from the traditional 5 or 6 years (170 credit hours) to four years (136 credit hours). This reduction is a worldwide trend, mainly due to a lack of financial resources supporting high standards of professional education. Additionally, institutions are restructuring their curricula to adjust to the broader spectrum of career development opportunities for the graduating engineer and the new challenges faced by practicing engineers. Also, engineering education in Colombia needs to adjust to Colombia's necessities as a developing country. In response to the above-mentioned circumstances, the mechanical engineering department of the Universidad de Los Andes (UdLA) has proposed a new mechanical engineering (ME) undergraduate syllabus. This paper summarizes the process undergone by the ME department of the Universidad de Los Andes to review our syllabus and propose alternative approaches. Our new ME syllabus applies a skill-centered approach structured by four priorities: 1) the primary professional role of an engineer is in project development, 2) the engineer needs an in-depth knowledge of the sciences (physics, chemistry and biology) and mathematics; 3) the engineer also needs a general education in the social sciences and arts and, 4) the engineer should master the core concepts of mechanical engineering. These four priorities agree with the US study of the Engineer of 2020. Our restructured syllabus evenly introduces these priorities early in the undergraduate ME program. Our ME Department implemented the new syllabus for first year students in January 2006. Positive results have already started to emerge. This article provides an overview of the higher education quality assurance system in Colombia and a description of the Universidad de Los Andes new ME syllabus.
