Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to examine at how to portray characters in the stories and narratives which depicts one of these children's books and if they really have something to ethnicity and its identification to be done. The Research questions is: What are the different identification markers given, to the reading child in the books, which might indicate that the story depicts people of different ethnicities? How are the characters portrayed in the story and which role is assigned to the main character? What story is portrayed and is it relevant to an identifier can occur? The conclusions of the five children's books shows that it is important with identifications markers, to show that there are different ethnicities. For example the analysis revealed the specific features of the illustrations and how the books portrayes someone with a different ethnicity and cultural background as something exotic. In the texts, the analysis showed how it occurred ethnic differences, by explicitly demonstrating differences between the characters. It was found that the characters were produced mostly as good, happy, curious, suspicious and unsympathetic. Common to all the main characters was that they had been placed, in one for them unusual context and that they were trying to assimilate to the new situations. Depictions consisted of realism and fiction. What emerged here was that most of the stories themselves were not carrying identification purposes, most of the stories needed help with the identification markers from the illustrations, so that the reading child could understand the themes it was about. The methods used in the studies are narratology, semiotics and critical discourse analysis. In particular, I looked at the propositions, inferences, icon, index and symbol.

Syal, Manan. "Untestable Fault Identification Using Implications." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/46173.

Full text
Abstract:
Untestable faults in circuits are defects/faults for which there exists no test pattern that can either excite the fault or propagate the fault effect to an observable point, which could be either a Primary output (PO) or a scan flip-flop. The current state-of-the-art automatic test pattern generators (ATPGs) spend a lot of time in trying to generate a test sequence for the detection of untestable faults, before aborting on them, or identifying them as untestable, given enough time. Thus, it would be beneficial to quickly identify faults that are redundant/untestable, so that tools such as ATPG engines or fault simulators do not waste time targeting these faults. Our work focuses on the identification of untestable faults at low cost in terms of both memory and execution time. A powerful and memory efficient implication engine, which is used to identify the effect(s) of asserting logic values in a circuit, is used as the basic building block of our tool. Using the knowledge provided by this implication engine, we identify untestable faults using a fault independent, conflict based analysis. We evaluated our tool against several benchmark circuits (ISCAS '85, ISCAS '89 and ISCAS '93), and found that we could identify considerably more untestable faults in sequential circuits compared to similar conflict based algorithms which have been proposed earlier.

Smith, Finlay S. "Combining symbolic conflict recognition with Markov chains for fault identification." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/11417.

Full text
Abstract:
A novel approach is presented in this thesis that exploits uncertain information on the behavioural description of system components to identify possible fault behaviours in physical systems. The result is a diagnostic system that utilises all available evidence at each stage. The approach utilises the standard conflict recognition technique developed in the well-known General Diagnostic Engine framework to support diagnostic inference, through the production of both rewarding and penalising evidence. The penalising evidence is derived from the conflict sets and the rewarding evidence is derived, in a similar way, from two sets of components both combining to predict the same value of a given variable within the system model. The rewarding evidence can be used to increase the possibility of a given component being in the actual fault model, whilst penalising evidence is used to reduce the possibility. Markov matrices are derived from given evidence, thereby enabling the use of Markov Chains in the diagnostic process. Markov Chains are used to determine possible next states of a system based only upon the current state. This idea is adapted so that instead of moving from one state to another the movement is between different behavioural modes of individual components. The transition probability between states then becomes the possibility of each behaviour being in the next model. Markov matrices are therefore used to revise the beliefs in each of the behaviours of each component. This research has resulted in a technique for identifying candidates for multiple faults that is shown to be very effective. To illustrate the process, electrical circuits consisting of approximately five hundred components are used to show how the technique works on a large scale. The electrical circuits used are drawn from a standard test set.

Thesis, Rennes 2, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020REN20003.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to study the impact of national symbols’ desecration on intergroup relations and socio-psychological factors (identification and patriotism) that may moderate these consequences. Because they strengthen the cohesiveness, distinctiveness and cultural identity of a group, national symbols ensure a secure social identity. Based on social identity theory, we hypothesized that symbol desecration, even if perpetrators are ingroup members, would constitute a threat and thus provoke a diffuse pro-ingroup bias. Intergroup consequences could be moderated by rigid or conservative identification with the national group, i.e., blind patriotism. These issues are explored in four experimental chapters. The first three chapters examine implications of desecrating a national symbol and group identification on intergroup attitudes. On the whole, identification does not explain increases in pro-ingroup bias when symbols are harmed. However, context is determinant. The desecration of a national symbol by an ingroup member in an intergroup (sport competition) or intragroup context leads to strategies of intergroup (increase in pro-ingroup bias) or intragroup (increase in identification) defense, respectively. The fourth chapter shows that blind patriotism is a moderator of consequences of an ingroup national symbol’s desecration in an intragroup context. Higher blind patriots perceive more threat, resulting in an increased and diffuse proingroup bias. Contributions, limits and perspectives of this research are discussed

Zhang, Ying. "Symbolic Regression of Thermo-Physical Model Using Genetic Programming." Scholar Commons, 2004. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/1316.

Full text
Abstract:
The symbolic regression problem is to find a function, in symbolic form, that fits a given data set. Symbolic regression provides a means for function identification. This research describes an adaptive hybrid system for symbolic function identification of thermo-physical model that combines the genetic programming and a modified Marquardt nonlinear regression algorithm. Genetic Programming (GP) system can extract knowledge from the data in the form of symbolic expressions, i.e. a tree structure, that are used to model and derive equation of state, mixing rules and phase behavior from the experimental data (properties estimation). During the automatic evolution process of GP, the function structure of generated individual module could be highly complicated. To ensure the convergence of the regression, a modified Marquardt regression algorithm is used. Two stop criteria are attached to the traditional Marquardt algorithm to enforce the algorithm repeat the regression process before it stops. Statistic analysis is applied to the fitted model. Residual plot is used to test the goodness of fit. The χ2-test is used to test the model's adequacy. Ten experiments are run with different form of input variables, number of data points, standard errors added to data set, and fitness functions. The results show that the system is able to find models and optimize for its parameters successfully.

Abstract:
This thesis operates under the assumption that the earliest form of mass communication is the religious sermon as recorded in the Bible. This thesis looks to Bormann, who used a sacred to secular approach and found similarities between Puritan sermons and the rhetoric of political speeches. This research reverses that order and moves from secular to sacred by looking first at well-known American speeches and then at landmark addresses to Seminary and Institutes of Religion teachers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—and specifically at Clark's The Charted Course of the Church in Education. This single sermon, delivered in 1938, continues to shape the Seminary and Institutes program after more than seven decades. With the opening of the first LDS Seminary in 1912, the foundations of the program were laid. Yet, each generation seemed to drift away from those foundations enough that a realignment was needed. In 1938, the constitution of Church education was given in the form of the Charted Course and it has served as the realigning document ever since. Subsequent realignments occurred in 1954, and 1963. Since 1976, the Charted Course has been referenced regularly, particularly during the annual Evening with a General Authority address to Seminary and Institute teachers and, consequently, since that time, no great drift has occurred that required another major realignment. Instead, the Charted Course is now used consistently to prevent drift, not only to correct it.

I create art, not out of a deep understanding of the world around me, but out of a lack of one. Human psychology, motives, behaviors, stressors, intentions and identity are the themes that boggle me the most. Therefore, it is only natural that my work would be fueled by the questions these themes pose. In the past I sought to understand what pushes people to make certain choices and how can the world around us affect the formation of identity. Currently I wonder about identity in terms of what do people use to form and reinforce identity both real and fabricated. In addition to this I am working through the question of what creates worth for an object; it’s function or its fabricated identity. Through the use of photography, video, sculpture and installation I explore the possibilities of questions and also understandings that my work can create.

Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 17-20, 1994 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California
Although most closed-loop synchronizers employ maximum likelihood estimators for symbol value decisions, in general, their symbol timing estimates are not optimum. It would seem only natural that an optimum timing estimator would choose interval partitions based on maximizing the observed sample signal-to-noise ratio. The symbol synchronizer described below achieves optimum performance when decisions on present symbol values are based on current and previously-received symbol samples. This procedure attempts to reestablish the interval independence criterion, thereby reducing timing estimator variance. The realization presented is motivated by an open-loop maximum a posteriori (MAP) structure analysis.

Calba, Romain. "L'identification nationale dans la France contemporaine. Les formes de l'investissement symbolique dans l'idée de nation." Thesis, Montpellier 3, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013MON30016.

Abstract:
This study is focused on the analysis of the modellings of the national imagination in contemporary France. With the globalization and its multiple dimensions, the national existence seems to be taken in this alternative: on one hand a standardization in defiance of the national "cultures", and on the other hand an exacerbation of the national cultural peculiarities, the national shape being associated with a positive value in a world in "crisis". Contrary to the alternative between a law of succession of the groups and an essentialisation of an inflexible national reality, this study approaches the national question by the study of contemporary contents of the national imagination symbolic forms. From the observation of the contemporary modulations of their contents, this study is based on the observation of concrete operations of national representation and their integration in contexts of the national "reality" statement. At first, the studyof nation's words approaches the construction of the national shape as sociological object and the contemporary modalities of the national shape statement, particularly the investments around the national identity. Then, from the image as a symbolic shape of social groups statement, we studied a particular materiality of the national imagination, the national philatelic production, which allows to observe the modulations of the nation's social image. Finally, the empirical study of citizenship ceremonies allows to observe the contemporary contents and borders of the national identification from its application

Callan, R. E. "Netting the symbol : analytically deriving recursive connectionist representation of symbol structures." Thesis, Southampton Solent University, 1996. http://ssudl.solent.ac.uk/2427/.

Full text
Abstract:
With the huge research effort into connectionist systems that has taken place over the last decade a debate has developed as to whether the more traditional Artificial Intelligence (AI) paradigm of symbolism or the connectionist paradigm offers the way ahead to developing high level cognitive systems. Central to the debate are issues of representation. Traditional AI has spent many years developing representation languages and representation has long been seen as essential for the development of intelligent systems. Early connectionists have tended to rely on the notion that a network of simple processing units will develop adequate internal representations as a by product of learning. Indeed, with connectionism it would appear on first sight that the development of a representational formalism is somewhat intractable when knowledge is implicit in a distributed pattern of activity. Contrary to this view, some connectionists have agreed with the traditionalists that the mechanism of represnetation must support compositional construction and be understood. Some connectionists would even go as far to say that the representation mechanism should be understood to the point whereby an explicit or easily read description of the knowledge held by a network can be given. This thesis presents some of the key issues which arise when attempting symbol style representations with connectionist architectures. A number of connectionist techniques are reviewed. The emphasis of this thesis is on the presentation of a model that provides a simplified version of a connectionist system that was developed to represent symbol structures. The model is the result of the research reported herin and provides an original contribution in a number of important areas. The model has the benefit of allowing very quick derivation of connectionist representatiions, unlike the slow training environments of a pure network implementation. The model provides a mathematical framework that gives insight into the convergence behaviour of the technique it proposes and this framework allows a statement to be made about generalisation characteristics. The model has immediate practical use in supplying connectionist representations with which to experiment and provides a conceptual cehicle that should assist with the development of future techniques that tackle representation issues.

Abstract:
For several decades, there has been a transfer of ideas from the private sector to the public sector on how to modernize the organization. One widespread idea is the service guarantee. However, when ideas are transferred from one domain to another and implemented in a different context, they are also always transformed. This report centres on what happened in practice when service guarantees were introduced into two Swedish municipalities. The purpose of the study is to investigate how the employees perceived the implementation of a public service guarantee and its impact on the employees in the organization. The study points to the difficulty of transferring the service guarantee idea to the public sector and to reproduce it successfully. The study indicates that the existence of the service guarantee is questioned, and gives rise to new goal conflicts when operating plans are made. Employees expect managers to be committed, while describing a status quo situation. The study indicates that the service guarantee has only become an unexploited symbolic tool in the development of quality assurance.

Abstract:
ITC/USA 2007 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Third Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 22-25, 2007 / Riviera Hotel & Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada
Shaped offset quadrature phase shift keying (SOQPSK) is a highly bandwidth efficient modulation technique used widely in military and aeronautical telemetry standards. It can be classified as a form of continuous phase modulation (CPM), but its major distinction from other CPM schemes is that it has a constrained (correlated) ternary data alphabet. CPM-based detection models for SOQPSK have been developed only recently. One roadblock standing in the way of these detectors being adopted is that existing symbol timing recovery techniques for CPM are not always applicable since the data symbols are correlated. We investigate the performance of one CPM-based timing error detector (TED) that can be used with SOQPSK, and apply it to the versions of SOQPSK used in military (MIL-STD SOQPSK) and telemetry group (SOQPSK-TG) standards. We derive the theoretical performance limits on the accuracy of timing recovery for SOQPSK, as given by the modified Cramer-Rao bound (MCRB), and show that the proposed TED performs close to these bounds in computer simulations and is free of false-lock points. We also show that the proposed scheme outperforms a non-data aided TED that was recently developed for SOQPSK. These results show that the proposed scheme has great promise in a wide range of applications due to its low complexity, strong performance, and lack of false-lock points.

Zhang, Ying. "Synthesis of Local Thermo-Physical Models Using Genetic Programming." Scholar Commons, 2009. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/103.

Full text
Abstract:
Local thermodynamic models are practical alternatives to computationally expensive rigorous models that involve implicit computational procedures and often complement them to accelerate computation for real-time optimization and control. Human-centered strategies for development of these models are based on approximation of theoretical models. Genetic Programming (GP) system can extract knowledge from the given data in the form of symbolic expressions. This research describes a fully data driven automatic self-evolving algorithm that builds appropriate approximating formulae for local models using genetic programming. No a-priori information on the type of mixture (ideal/non ideal etc.) or assumptions are necessary. The approach involves synthesis of models for a given set of variables and mathematical operators that may relate them. The selection of variables is automated through principal component analysis and heuristics. For each candidate model, the model parameters are optimized in the inner integrated nested loop. The trade-off between accuracy and model complexity is addressed through incorporation of the Minimum Description Length (MDL) into the fitness (objective) function. Statistical tools including residual analysis are used to evaluate performance of models. Adjusted R-square is used to test model's accuracy, and F-test is used to test if the terms in the model are necessary. The analysis of the performance of the models generated with the data driven approach depicts theoretically expected range of compositional dependence of partition coefficients and limits of ideal gas as well as ideal solution behavior. Finally, the model built by GP integrated into a steady state and dynamic flow sheet simulator to show the benefits of using such models in simulation. The test systems were propane-propylene for ideal solutions and acetone-water for non-ideal. The result shows that, the generated models are accurate for the whole range of data and the performance is tunable. The generated local models can indeed be used as empirical models go beyond elimination of the local model updating procedures to further enhance the utility of the approach for deployment of real-time applications.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This essay comprises a study of the bridal crowns of Tjust, with respect to their national history, concept and aspect of mythological symbol. The tradition of bearing the parochial bridal crown is closely associated with religious medieval politics, and has also come to include elements of superstition and folklore. Attention is paid to these aspects dealing with the position of the bridal crown within current forms of tradition and culture and the impact on brides of this day and age. As the tradition of Church-owned bridal crowns is intrinsic to this country, and especially in the area of which Tjust is a part, possible solutions to the continued tradition are investigated.

Abstract:
The ability to construct and manipulate recursive symbol structures is regarded as fundamentally important in the domain of cognitive modelling. The aim of this thesis dissertation is to explore how well Pollack's Recursive Auto-Associative Memory (RAAM) networks can represent and facilitate the manipulation of highly-recursive structures. Using mainly skewed and balanced binary trees, the representational power of the RAAM architecture is examined for structures which are lexically simple and syntactically complex. This is in contrast to much published work on RAAM networks, in which the structures encoded are lexically complex but syntactically simple. A new RAAM tree-processing operation, which allows partial information about a set of siblings to be used as a parent pointer, is described and tested. Several empirical investigations are motivated and carried out, to determine how effectively RAAM networks can encode highly-recursive structures. The investigations demonstrate the sensitivity of the RAAM architecture with respect to the initial conditions, training parameters and the training strategies used. This work also introduces some new techniques which help to address the twin problems of extended training times and obtaining successful RAAM encodings. A completely new method for performing terminal detection is presented as well as a technique for refining Pollack's (1990) terminal detection method. In both cases, the rate at which successful RAAM encodings are obtained is significantly better than using Pollack's method. In addition, the new implicit terminal detection method might allow improved RAAM generalisation, although this conjecture has not yet been tested.RAAM networks have been used as an important counter-example to influential analyses of the shortcomings of connectionist cognitive models. The limited success of the RAAM networks in this study brings into question connectionist hopes for an effective RAAM-based cognitive model.

Abstract:
During the past years mobile technology has moved almost entirely to smartphones. Smartphones are in essence more computers than phones, which we always carry with us and that contain ever more sensitive information. This requires that the level of security around the device increases. This study strives to find a new method of authenticating users, that is more secure than those that are established today, but at the same time has a similar level of usability. Our idea, which we work with under the name Colour a Symbol, is based upon making combinations of symbols and colours in pairs. In order to develop the idea we created a functional prototype, that was evaluated by a smaller test group. The empirical data implies that Colour a Symbol has good usability, if only a little too long login time. Ideas as to shorten the login time are suggested. Theoretically, Colour a Symbol is more secure than for an example pincode, but the test group was not large enough to estimate the practical password space. Design of the symbol theme probably also affects the practical password space to a high degree. Our conclusion is that the idea has clear potential, but that further studies are needed to fine-tune it.

This project is located in Bloomfield, NJ. Less than fifteen miles from New York City, the Township of Bloomfield was first settled by the Dutch in 1691 and later by the English in 1719. In 1812, the State of New Jersey finally incorporated Bloomfield as a township. Until then, it had been a parish of the city of Newark. The Township took its name from the Bloomfield Presbyterian Church. This church was named for General Joseph Bloomfield, the fourth Governor of New Jersey and the first Governor to be born in New Jersey Bloomfield prides itself on its rich historical background. In 1830, a town resident David Oakes established a woolen mill. This mill prospered and provided employment for hundreds of immigrants and among its various materials, uniforms for the Union Army in the Civil War. In addition, the Township housed many military leaders including General George Washington during the American Revolution. Moreover, the community's Green functioned as a military training ground during the war. Today, it remains among the most attractive features of Bloomfield. The Township Green and its surrounding buildings, including the Oakes' mansion, which is now used as a performing arts center, have been recognized as a historic district. In 1945, the Bethany United Presbyterian Church purchased a tract of property from the Township of Bloomfield. Like Bloomfield, this church has a meaningful history. Though the construction of the church building itself began in 1945, the church as a congregation became established years earlier. Its original meeting place was a local storefront just up the street of the now existing church. In 1947, the Bethany congregation marched down the street to its present location. It was a very ceremonial event that marked years of planning, prayer, hard work, and the faith of church leaders and members alike. In expressing the church's interest in obtaining the land, Reverend William H. Neebe, on behalf of Bethany's Board of Trustees wrote to the Bloomfield Town Council, "We believe that as a church we are rendering a public service to the community Our only reason for existence is for service to the town and community... .Anything that aids the church enhances the opportunity that the church has to serve the community."

Abstract:

This work examines the theological interpretation that the nature of the Eucharist is the actual body and blood of Christ ingested by the participants at the Lord’s Table. It proposes that the keys to unlocking the mystery of the Eucharist are reexaminations of the Old Testament typology of the “Bread of the Presence,” and the New Testament patristic understanding of symbol and reality that point to the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. These comprehensions serve renewal hermeneutics by advancing Eucharistic theology toward three goals: they provide insights that inform and facilitate our experience of Christ’s Real Presence in the assembly of the Lord’s Table, they call contemporary culture to satisfy their deep longing to experience the Presence of the Living God through Holy Communion, and they recall the hope that Jesus’ prayer in John 17: 20–23 for unity of his one body may be realized.

Abstract:
ITC/USA 2011 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Seventh Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 24-27, 2011 / Bally's Las Vegas, Las Vegas, Nevada
A number of encoding and decoding methods for SOQPSK-TG are evaluated with their simulation performance under additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The two forward error correction (FEC) codes are serial concatenated convolutional code (SCCC) and low-density parity-check code (LDPC). Two decoding methods are applied: soft-output Viterbi algorithm (SOVA) and symbol by symbol (SxS) detection. Pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) and pulse truncation (PT) filters are designed for SOVA decoding, and numerically optimum (NO) and integrate and dump (I&D) filters are employed for the SxS methods. We discuss the performance of these schemes by comparing and analyzing their Matlab simulation. The LDPC and SOVA with PAM filter outperforms over all the other combinations. We also use timing and phase recovery with various loop bandwidths. The system structures and the synchronization technique are discussed in this paper.

Abstract:
This work is about radiative heat transfer in heterogeneous materials used in high temperature applications, such as fire safety in buildings, insulation of furnaces or thermal protection for aerospace vehicles. These semitransparent materials with heterogeneous structure absorb and scatter thermal radiation, and their radiative properties at high temperatures are generally unknown. In order to accurately model radiative transfer within these materials and to quantify the impact of radiation in the global heat transfer, it is necessary to determine absorption and scattering radiative properties. In this thesis, these properties are identified by inverse method from radiative models and spectrometric measurements. Experimental identification from spectrometric measurements provides radiative properties at temperature levels close to real operating conditions for the material of interest. To carry out the analysis of the inverse problem, we develop here a methodology based on Symbolic Monte Carlo (SMC) methods. These methods allow expressing radiative fluxes as a simple function of the so-called symbolic parameters. A single calculation expresses radiative fluxes overall the parameter space, which turns out to be very useful in an inversion approach. These methods are particularly suitable for expressing radiative quantities as a function of temperature, of absorption and scattering coefficients. In this thesis, we also propose a new symbolic method based on a series expansion of orthogonal polynomials, allowing the extension of SMC methods to other types of parameters (geometric, phase function, etc.). Expressions of radiative fluxes as functions of radiative properties obtained by SMC are employed to analyze if the inverse problem is well-posed and to efficiently identify the radiative properties, while taking into account the experimental and numerical uncertainties. On the other hand, if the inverse problem is ill-posed, this method can analyze the input of other types of measurements that may allow the identification. The methodology is applied in this work to the identification of radiative properties of a family of heterogeneous materials composed of Quartz fibers

Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the importance of the mother figure for the definition of the female identity in three novels by the Belgian writer and psychoanalyst Jacqueline Harpman: La fille démantelée, La plage d’Ostende and Orlanda. This perspective is largely motivated by the specific character of the mother-daughter relation which is crucial to the formation of female identity. Freud already argued that it was impossible to understand the female identity without considering a woman’s preœdipal fixation to her mother. The analysis of the three novels is based on the concept of what Kristeva terms primary narcissism, which represents a delicate stage in the relationship between mother and child. In different ways, the analyzed novels are permeated by an oscillation between identification and differentiation. On a thematic level, the female protagonist’s desire to distance herself from the mother is always countered by an awareness of an intimate bond with her, and, paradoxically, it may seem, that the differentiation from the mother opens the way for a happy reunion between mother and daughter, now two individuals who no longer form a symbiotic unit. In this process of individuation described in the novels, a third instance which Freud called father of individual prehistory is crucial. Even though, at first sight, love appears to be the most important theme in the works of Harpman, this thesis argues that the theme of love is intimately linked to that of the mother figure and that it is necessary to read the works of Harpman through the spectrum of the mother-daughter relation in order to achieve a deeper understanding. Such a reading reveals among other things the key role of the inner dynamics of love. Love is not only the main theme of the work of Harpman, it’s also the meeting place of the two “love cures” of Harpman: literature and psychoanalysis, both situated in the field between narcissism and idealization, mechanisms that are inherent to what Freud called the subject’s eternal rebirth. The way in which writing functions as a way for the Harpman female protagonist to become a subject corresponds to Kristeva's idea of the entering into language, or into the symbolic system as Lacan put it, as a way to ward off the emptiness of the abjection. The symbolic system gives the subject a sense of being an individual with clear boundaries in a structured and intelligible world.

Abstract:
The importance of the Hittites derives from the fact that they were an organized central power extending over a large territory within which a number of societies maintained their language, culture and traditions. The archaeological findings of Hattusha, the Hittite capital reveal that the city had reached its maximum limits during the Great Kingdom period and the most magnificient and monumental buildings of the city are dated to this period. Yazilikaya, the open air sanctuary which reached to its final form during the Great Kingdom period too, is an outstanding example of the many temples constructed in Hattusha that belong to different periods and the dimensions of which are quite dfferent from each other. Among the archaeological findings of Hattusha, the royal archives are other important material evidence as they transmit us the Hittites'
perception of the cosmos. However, understanding the antique world which is at a "
distance"
both historaiclly and conceptually is not an easy task. In this context, rethinking and reinterpreting the meaning attributed to Yazilikaya, th eopen air sanctuary, can only be achieved by considering the political, architectural and religious aspects together. This study is an attempt to reinterpret the material knowledge by drawing the appropriate limits of this knowledge with a contextual approach.

Mercier, Hugues. "Communication over channels with symbol synchronization errors." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/904.

Full text
Abstract:
Synchronization is a problem of fundamental importance for a wide range of practical communication systems including reading media, multi-user optical channels, synchronous digital communication systems, packet-switched communication networks, distributed computing systems, etc. In this thesis I study various aspects of communication over channels with symbol synchronization errors. Symbol synchronization errors are harder to model than erasures or substitution errors caused by additive noise because they introduce uncertainties in timing. Consequently, the capacity of channels subjected to synchronization errors is a very challenging problem, even when considering the simplest channels for which only deletion errors occur. I improve on the best existing lower and upper bounds for the capacity of the deletion channel using convex and stochastic optimization techniques. I also show that simply finding closed-form expressions for the number of subsequences when deleting symbols from a string is computationally prohibitive. Constructing efficient synchronization error-correcting codes is also a challenging task. The main result of the thesis is the design of a new family of codes able to correct several types of synchronization errors. The codes use trellis and modified versions of the Viterbi decoding algorithm, and therefore have very low encoding and decoding complexities. They also have high data rates and work for reasonably noisy channels, which makes them one of the first synchronization-correcting codes that have any chance of being used in practical systems. In the last part of the thesis, I show that a synchronization approach can solve the opportunistic spectrum access problem in cognitive radio, where cognitive users want to communicate in presence of legacy users to whom the bandwidth has been licensed. I also consider the amount of communication required to solve a large class of distributed problems where synchronization errors can occur. More precisely, I study how allowing the parties to solve the problems incorrectly with small probability can reduce the total amount of communication or the number of messages that need to be exchanged.
