Full textThe aim of this thesis is to study the impact of national symbols’ desecration on intergroup relations and socio-psychological factors (identification and patriotism) that may moderate these consequences. Because they strengthen the cohesiveness, distinctiveness and cultural identity of a group, national symbols ensure a secure social identity. Based on social identity theory, we hypothesized that symbol desecration, even if perpetrators are ingroup members, would constitute a threat and thus provoke a diffuse pro-ingroup bias. Intergroup consequences could be moderated by rigid or conservative identification with the national group, i.e., blind patriotism. These issues are explored in four experimental chapters. The first three chapters examine implications of desecrating a national symbol and group identification on intergroup attitudes. On the whole, identification does not explain increases in pro-ingroup bias when symbols are harmed. However, context is determinant. The desecration of a national symbol by an ingroup member in an intergroup (sport competition) or intragroup context leads to strategies of intergroup (increase in pro-ingroup bias) or intragroup (increase in identification) defense, respectively. The fourth chapter shows that blind patriotism is a moderator of consequences of an ingroup national symbol’s desecration in an intragroup context. Higher blind patriots perceive more threat, resulting in an increased and diffuse proingroup bias. Contributions, limits and perspectives of this research are discussed

Full textAlthough most closed-loop synchronizers employ maximum likelihood estimators for symbol value decisions, in general, their symbol timing estimates are not optimum. It would seem only natural that an optimum timing estimator would choose interval partitions based on maximizing the observed sample signal-to-noise ratio. The symbol synchronizer described below achieves optimum performance when decisions on present symbol values are based on current and previously-received symbol samples. This procedure attempts to reestablish the interval independence criterion, thereby reducing timing estimator variance. The realization presented is motivated by an open-loop maximum a posteriori (MAP) structure analysis.

Full textThis study is focused on the analysis of the modellings of the national imagination in contemporary France. With the globalization and its multiple dimensions, the national existence seems to be taken in this alternative: on one hand a standardization in defiance of the national "cultures", and on the other hand an exacerbation of the national cultural peculiarities, the national shape being associated with a positive value in a world in "crisis". Contrary to the alternative between a law of succession of the groups and an essentialisation of an inflexible national reality, this study approaches the national question by the study of contemporary contents of the national imagination symbolic forms. From the observation of the contemporary modulations of their contents, this study is based on the observation of concrete operations of national representation and their integration in contexts of the national "reality" statement. At first, the studyof nation's words approaches the construction of the national shape as sociological object and the contemporary modalities of the national shape statement, particularly the investments around the national identity. Then, from the image as a symbolic shape of social groups statement, we studied a particular materiality of the national imagination, the national philatelic production, which allows to observe the modulations of the nation's social image. Finally, the empirical study of citizenship ceremonies allows to observe the contemporary contents and borders of the national identification from its application

Full textShaped offset quadrature phase shift keying (SOQPSK) is a highly bandwidth efficient modulation technique used widely in military and aeronautical telemetry standards. It can be classified as a form of continuous phase modulation (CPM), but its major distinction from other CPM schemes is that it has a constrained (correlated) ternary data alphabet. CPM-based detection models for SOQPSK have been developed only recently. One roadblock standing in the way of these detectors being adopted is that existing symbol timing recovery techniques for CPM are not always applicable since the data symbols are correlated. We investigate the performance of one CPM-based timing error detector (TED) that can be used with SOQPSK, and apply it to the versions of SOQPSK used in military (MIL-STD SOQPSK) and telemetry group (SOQPSK-TG) standards. We derive the theoretical performance limits on the accuracy of timing recovery for SOQPSK, as given by the modified Cramer-Rao bound (MCRB), and show that the proposed TED performs close to these bounds in computer simulations and is free of false-lock points. We also show that the proposed scheme outperforms a non-data aided TED that was recently developed for SOQPSK. These results show that the proposed scheme has great promise in a wide range of applications due to its low complexity, strong performance, and lack of false-lock points.

Full textDuring the past years mobile technology has moved almost entirely to smartphones. Smartphones are in essence more computers than phones, which we always carry with us and that contain ever more sensitive information. This requires that the level of security around the device increases. This study strives to find a new method of authenticating users, that is more secure than those that are established today, but at the same time has a similar level of usability. Our idea, which we work with under the name Colour a Symbol, is based upon making combinations of symbols and colours in pairs. In order to develop the idea we created a functional prototype, that was evaluated by a smaller test group. The empirical data implies that Colour a Symbol has good usability, if only a little too long login time. Ideas as to shorten the login time are suggested. Theoretically, Colour a Symbol is more secure than for an example pincode, but the test group was not large enough to estimate the practical password space. Design of the symbol theme probably also affects the practical password space to a high degree. Our conclusion is that the idea has clear potential, but that further studies are needed to fine-tune it.

This project is located in Bloomfield, NJ. Less than fifteen miles from New York City, the Township of Bloomfield was first settled by the Dutch in 1691 and later by the English in 1719. In 1812, the State of New Jersey finally incorporated Bloomfield as a township. Until then, it had been a parish of the city of Newark. The Township took its name from the Bloomfield Presbyterian Church. This church was named for General Joseph Bloomfield, the fourth Governor of New Jersey and the first Governor to be born in New Jersey Bloomfield prides itself on its rich historical background. In 1830, a town resident David Oakes established a woolen mill. This mill prospered and provided employment for hundreds of immigrants and among its various materials, uniforms for the Union Army in the Civil War. In addition, the Township housed many military leaders including General George Washington during the American Revolution. Moreover, the community's Green functioned as a military training ground during the war. Today, it remains among the most attractive features of Bloomfield. The Township Green and its surrounding buildings, including the Oakes' mansion, which is now used as a performing arts center, have been recognized as a historic district. In 1945, the Bethany United Presbyterian Church purchased a tract of property from the Township of Bloomfield. Like Bloomfield, this church has a meaningful history. Though the construction of the church building itself began in 1945, the church as a congregation became established years earlier. Its original meeting place was a local storefront just up the street of the now existing church. In 1947, the Bethany congregation marched down the street to its present location. It was a very ceremonial event that marked years of planning, prayer, hard work, and the faith of church leaders and members alike. In expressing the church's interest in obtaining the land, Reverend William H. Neebe, on behalf of Bethany's Board of Trustees wrote to the Bloomfield Town Council, "We believe that as a church we are rendering a public service to the community Our only reason for existence is for service to the town and community... .Anything that aids the church enhances the opportunity that the church has to serve the community."

Gauthier, Patricia. "The Eucharist as Symbol and Reality." Thesis, Regent University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10932876.
Full textThis work examines the theological interpretation that the nature of the Eucharist is the actual body and blood of Christ ingested by the participants at the Lord’s Table. It proposes that the keys to unlocking the mystery of the Eucharist are reexaminations of the Old Testament typology of the “Bread of the Presence,” and the New Testament patristic understanding of symbol and reality that point to the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. These comprehensions serve renewal hermeneutics by advancing Eucharistic theology toward three goals: they provide insights that inform and facilitate our experience of Christ’s Real Presence in the assembly of the Lord’s Table, they call contemporary culture to satisfy their deep longing to experience the Presence of the Living God through Holy Communion, and they recall the hope that Jesus’ prayer in John 17: 20–23 for unity of his one body may be realized.

Full textA number of encoding and decoding methods for SOQPSK-TG are evaluated with their simulation performance under additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The two forward error correction (FEC) codes are serial concatenated convolutional code (SCCC) and low-density parity-check code (LDPC). Two decoding methods are applied: soft-output Viterbi algorithm (SOVA) and symbol by symbol (SxS) detection. Pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) and pulse truncation (PT) filters are designed for SOVA decoding, and numerically optimum (NO) and integrate and dump (I&D) filters are employed for the SxS methods. We discuss the performance of these schemes by comparing and analyzing their Matlab simulation. The LDPC and SOVA with PAM filter outperforms over all the other combinations. We also use timing and phase recovery with various loop bandwidths. The system structures and the synchronization technique are discussed in this paper.

Full textThis work is about radiative heat transfer in heterogeneous materials used in high temperature applications, such as fire safety in buildings, insulation of furnaces or thermal protection for aerospace vehicles. These semitransparent materials with heterogeneous structure absorb and scatter thermal radiation, and their radiative properties at high temperatures are generally unknown. In order to accurately model radiative transfer within these materials and to quantify the impact of radiation in the global heat transfer, it is necessary to determine absorption and scattering radiative properties. In this thesis, these properties are identified by inverse method from radiative models and spectrometric measurements. Experimental identification from spectrometric measurements provides radiative properties at temperature levels close to real operating conditions for the material of interest. To carry out the analysis of the inverse problem, we develop here a methodology based on Symbolic Monte Carlo (SMC) methods. These methods allow expressing radiative fluxes as a simple function of the so-called symbolic parameters. A single calculation expresses radiative fluxes overall the parameter space, which turns out to be very useful in an inversion approach. These methods are particularly suitable for expressing radiative quantities as a function of temperature, of absorption and scattering coefficients. In this thesis, we also propose a new symbolic method based on a series expansion of orthogonal polynomials, allowing the extension of SMC methods to other types of parameters (geometric, phase function, etc.). Expressions of radiative fluxes as functions of radiative properties obtained by SMC are employed to analyze if the inverse problem is well-posed and to efficiently identify the radiative properties, while taking into account the experimental and numerical uncertainties. On the other hand, if the inverse problem is ill-posed, this method can analyze the input of other types of measurements that may allow the identification. The methodology is applied in this work to the identification of radiative properties of a family of heterogeneous materials composed of Quartz fibers
