The analysis of costumes in Brazilian cinema comes from the construction of the character in the imaginary “country person” figure in the discursive visuality of cinema which was derived from the literary origin. This analysis is intended to investigate to what extent the costumes reconstruct the character in the movies, since the costume that wears (or bares) the literary and cinematographic character is part of the symbolic’s signs in the communication system. The movie’s costumes are understood as one of the key elements to build the identity of the characters concerning the expression of sexuality, identification with a social class or even with power. This approach also assumes to reflect the function of the garment over the movie character's costumes and in relation to the circumstances of the time period the movies were shown. It is intended, then, to analyze the following transpositions to the language of cinema: film by Nelson Pereira dos Santos (1963), from the eponymous book Vidas Secas, by Graciliano Ramos (1938), the film Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol (1964), by Glauber Rocha, inspired from the books Grande Sertão: Veredas, by Guimarães Rosa, and Os Sertões (1902), by Euclides da Cunha, and finally, the analysis of the film’s costumes from Guerra de Canudos (1997), by Sérgio Rezende in relation to the literary work Os Sertões, which the movie was based off. The cutouts were made in order to enable the analysis of the aesthetic design of the three directors of the listed films by means of the wardrobe, considering the literary narrative sense.

Full textThis dissertation aims to examine some aspects of the literary imagination of the desert in various texts in English, Arabic, and French, most of them novels set in the deserts of the Mediterranean area. The desert is a multifaceted and polymorphous object, and at the intersection of many fantasies. It is a unique landscape, one that materializes following a long, institutional and cultural sedimentation of images. Our imagination of this landscape is dependent on medieval images of the desert, as well as travel writing and religious texts. Moreover, as a colonial fantasy, it is often perceived as a space where paradoxes thrive, where the authentic and the artificial, the past and the future, reality and fiction, merge beyond recognition. As such, it is firmly set in the realm of post-colonial discourses. I will first attempt to understand how the desert and its recurring motifs are born, as literary objects, in the travel writings of the XIXth century. Subsequently, I will focus on how the desert of the XXth century, becomes a political space where postcolonial writers reclaim and rewrite their voices and histories. Consequently, the desert in literature, rather than a state, a landscape or a geological fact, appears to be a process of becoming. Thus, the aim of the research was not so much to formulate a definition of what the desert in literature is, but rather of what it can do. In fact, it enables the writers to create borderland spaces, where origins, history, and the future are recreated and, ultimately, where they can forge a desert speech, a hybrid, innovative language that attempts to voice that which has remained voiceless in the fringes of history

Full textI begin with an overview of past attempts to understand the changing role of the service sector in developed economies. Despite their weaknesses new political economy frameworks are shown to perhaps provide the best starting point for the development of a more 'services informed' approach to understanding current economic change.
In an attempt to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of applying such approaches to the study of services I first review their ability to explain and predict changes currently taking place in the tourism industry as a whole. This is followed by a discussion of the empirical findings of the thesis based on 103 interviews with managers and owners of Montreal hotels and travel agencies. I focus on the following key areas: the evolving competitive environment, changes in corporate organization, the adoption of new technologies and shifts in labour use. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
