Full textChanges are common in today's organizations and change of organizational culture is one strategy that can be used to improve profitability and achieve objectives. Changes in organizational culture are difficult to implement because of the unconscious assumptions that must be made visible and challenged. The change itself is time consuming. In social interactions individuals shape and reshape culture. According to symbolic interactionism transmission and interpretation of symbols occur through the social interaction. The purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of what contributes to a change in organizational culture and how the leader may be important in this change. The qualitative interview study takes into account the organization's internal material about the change process. There were eight interviews with leaders in the support unit in order to answer the research questions. Contributing to the change according to the leaders is: consensus, measuring, support from the organization, top management and leaders as symbols. The leader is considered to be particularly important because the leader has a central role in the transfer of organizational culture. If the leader is considered to be a symbol, the leader can affect cultural change by acting according to the desired culture.

Full textRecent research in classrooms has often had its focus on the pupil, the individual, and not on the different groups of students that exist. In a classroom there are normally several different groupings, each one having its own personal attitude towards the current lesson. If there had been more research we would find it easier to understand why pupils sometimes behave the way they do.
The purpose of this essay is to analyze how pupils` social relations create groupings. Furthermore I intend to investigate how and why pupils show their belonging to a certain group.
The two questions of the essay are:
1. How pupils’ social relations appear in a classroom?
2. What strategies do the pupils use to indicate their belonging to a grouping?
My final conclusion is that the pupils’ social relations appear in groupings, in which a certain standard dominates how the pupil should behave during a lesson. The members of a group use the same strategies to show their group belonging. For example, it can be different attitudes to the teacher’s lesson that mark a grouping.

Full textThe purpose of this study was to gain an insight into the preschool teachers' views on honesty and its importance related to communication and interplay in preschool. The study has contributed to a deeper understanding of the importance of honesty in the communication and interaction between individuals in preschool. The contribution of the increased understanding and knowledge of the concepts for the benefit of the people in the community who are interested in communication, interaction or interplay and honesty in various businesses, institutions or in private life. Knowledge is achieved by interviewing six preschool teachers from two preshools, and by analyzing and critically reviewed articles and other scientific literature on the subject. The study's questions were: How does preschool teachers define good communication and good interplay? What does honesty or dishonesty mean to preschool teachers as well as the situations in which these concepts can come into conflict with each other? And, how do preschool situations where the concepts of honesty and dishonesty have to be applied in practice? Qualitative interview method, the semi-structured type, have been used in the collection of empirical data. Symbolic interactionism is used as theory and perspective in this study. The results showed that preschool teachers' views on honesty were considered significant in communication, interaction and interplay with children and adults in preschool. White Lies proved to be acceptable in some situations to protect themselves or to protect the child. Respondents considered adults as role models and is expected by the care, nurturing and learning to teach children to become honest and good citizenship. Good communication and good interplay climate was about to dare to express ideas and opinions and to meet its words meant respondents. Honesty was also considered important to obtain a good communication and good interplay climates.

Full textAbstractTitle: If individuals get an information about how to work in a group, could that change their experience about cooperation?Authors: Hayat Ashkar and Görgen JanssonMentor: Ilkka Henrik MäkinenSeat of learning: Uppsala UniversityDate: 5/1 2014The background to this study is based on studies that have shown that if a patient while waiting for a doctor's appointment gets help to self-help, the patient will assimilate more of the treatment than a patient who only has to wait for their doctor’s appointment. That can then be interpreted as any kind of stimuli (self-help) before treatment is favourable. That led to a wonder if the same principle might apply to work in groups. If individuals who are going to do cooperation receive information about working in groups, in terms of social psychology concepts, could that improve their ability to work in a group? The purpose of this paper is to examine whether knowledge in social psychological concepts can be seen to give any impact on students' experiences and attitudes towards working in groups. To examine this, an experiment with different high school classes was conducted. In the experimental group the students implemented a group project and then answered a questionnaire that measured the students' experience of the work. In the next step they had to listen to a lecture about social psychological concepts. After that they did another group project and answered the same questionnaire again. In the control group the students did just the same except listening to the lecture about social psychological concepts. The theoretical concepts used include social negotiation, definition of the situation and priming. The results of this study show that the experimental group showed a consistently higher average current experience of group work. That indicates that a process of change begins in the participants. It can be explained by priming.

Full textThe purpose of this qualitative study is to examine how women talk about crime and the ways they can get out of a criminal lifestyle. By highlighting the meaning women lay behind criminal actions and how those meanings are modified during interaction within both criminal circles and with the professional social workers this study can contribute to increased knowledge of women's criminality. The study is based on interviews with four women who have refrained from a criminal lifestyle. The study was conducted by the inductive method grounded theory and its theoretical resident is symbolic interactionism. During the analysis three main categories appeared in the women's stories: motives, relationships and society, and those categories became the main building blocks of the theory that the result and analysis finally landed in. The theory that is based on the results of the study showed that women could desist from crime if they experienced an internal modifying process while also being offered non-criminal options, conditions and treatments in the three areas of motives, relationships and society. The internal modifying process could be initiated by the women’s own thoughts or by a professional. It was found in the study that women's criminality are both underestimated and undertreated. The support needed to be long term, aimed specifically at crime and designed for the specific needs of women. The women were helped by experiencing healthy female relationships and positive parenting, by developing non-criminal values and by developing a good self-image and non-criminal identity. The challenge for social work is to build a form of treatment that takes into account women's needs from the three levels motives, relationships and society and to both initiate a modifying process and quickly capture the women who are in in the midst of an internal modifying process.

I fokus
människor agerar under anställningsintervjun.
Should an individual expose his true personality, express his emotions,
reveal his inner-self and disclose exactly how he feels or should the individual
assess the social environment and act according to what the individual deems to
be the most acceptable behaviour in the social context, and so project the right
impression? Questions like this have helped us to put together this essay and have
motivated us to find out more.
The above is the theme this paper deals with and investigates. Its focus is
on the interpersonal interaction that takes place during a job interview and how
impression management is used. For the candidate and the recruiter a job
interview is a time when both want to appear in as good a light as possible.
Impression Management is a method to create and reinforce an impression by
using different tactics. We have, from theoretical starting points of symbolic
interaction, obtained both knowledge and inspiration and transferred them to the
job interview as part of the recruitment process. We have interviewed three
recruiters and three candidates who are employed at Växjö municipality’s School
and Child Care Administration. The aim of this thesis has been to achieve a better
understanding and knowledge of how people inter-act during an employment
interview. We have drawn the conclusion that both parties want to see the
interview as a conversation instead of a rigid interrogation or play-acting. We also
found that the two participants want to appear humane and accept faults and
shortcomings instead of giving the impression of being perfect. It is not
considered positive to only show their good sides as in an advertising campaign.
What emerged was that exaggerated capabilities sooner or later are exposed. It is
therefore important to have a general knowledge that makes it easier to expose
impression management.

Full textThis paper will address unemployment among young adults who now find themselves in an action program through a specific company here in Sweden, whose work, among other things, aims to help long-term unemployed into employment. The purpose of the study is based on the informants' experience analyzing what affects their particular unemployment. I have based the study on a qualitative method and conducted six interviews with young men aged 22-26 years. The material was then analyzed and based on two sociological perspectives: symbolic interactionism and emotion sociology. In my analysis of the material I found two corecategories. The first category is young and stigmatized and this category was imbued with that young people not always get the chance to show what they can do. But also because they simply have not yet acquired enough experience or networks. This may be due to the extended provisioning process that research on this subject raises. The other corecategory is social support, wich had a significant role in the informants' situation as unemployed. Support turned out to increase the motivation to get out of their unemployment. If there was no support from families, informants tended to feel ashamed about their situation and thus tended to give a lower motivation for some of them. The informants were also affected by how the people around them viewed them as unemployed, which in turn affected how they felt the rest of society valued them.

Full textIn a society in which gamers are considered to engage in an amoral environment, we intended with this study to examine how ethics and morality appears in the virtual world through a symbolic interactionist perspective. Through qualitative interviews eleven gamers have been able to give their own views about their experiences of the interaction they undergo daily. With help from detailed theories about ethics and morality, symbolic interactionism and gaming culture, this study has a wide theoretical foundation which applies in a hermeneutical analysis. The results show that ethics and morality exists within online games, as well as an amoral gaming culture. It appears to be two cultures, in which this study puts its focus on the first and describes both what the phenomenon is made of, and how it appears. The essence is about the social aspect, what we call sociality. This essence was found through five themes, all regarding group, sociality and interaction. The conclusion shows that there is a moral gaming culture as well as an amoral one, based on the degree of sociality and immersion. The moral gaming culture is created and recreated from the creation of meaning and social needs through the gamers as well as the flexibility of the virtual world. Keywords: Ethics, Morality, Online game, Game culture, Symbolic interactionism.

Full textThe aim of this study is that by the sociological perspective of symbolic interactionism, investigate how users of the social network Instagram is experiencing activity therein as a meaningful element in their everyday lives. The questions asked were: In what way is activity on Instagram perceived as meaningful ? Which standards and expectations develop through the activity? How does the activity adapt to these standards and expectations ? Methods: Qualitative methods in which users of Instagram has been interviewed about their subjective perceptions of the meaning of the activity. Interview responses were then analyzed through the symbolic interactionism perspective, with emphasis on Erving Goffman's contribution to this. Results: The interviewees perceive the activity on Instagram as meaningful as it gives them confirmation and creates a sense of community. Activity on Instagram is expected to be fun, creative and inspiring, which means that expressions that do not meet these requirements are screened out. The interviewees are constantly adapting their activity to that expectation in their quest for confirmation. Conclusion: Instagram is a meaningful part of daily life as the activity meets several basic human needs. However, this is not unconditional, as the users need to live up to the standards and expectations that are created in the activity in order to experience this as meaningful.

Full textAbstract: Meänkieli is one of Sweden's five national minority languages in which research on culture is of limited area focus. The political purpose, expressed in the law on national minorities and minority languages, intends to create a linguistic and cultural revitalization. A new report shows that knowledge gaps are large, both within claims minorities ask for, and also how agencies are working with minority rights. A key word in the law, is the promotion and preservation of minority cultural heritage. Unlike other minoritygroups, meänkieli does not distinguishes a well known particular culture, such as yiddish or romani-chib. What distinguishes Meänkieli cultural heritage in addition to the language? Through a qualitative generational study, we examine how women related to meänkieli, create meaning in a cultural context, and highlights the generational differences that is manifested. The study shows that there are similar cultural markers among participants, and that a cultural- or language revitalization is not particularly striking among the groups.

Full textThe overall aim of this essay has been to contribute to a deeper understanding of self-help on the Internet by illuminating the individual's awareness and interaction with others. The study's subject of research has been seven individual life stories found on a newsgroup on the Internet and was implemented with a narrative research method and a hermeneutic approach. The study is qualitative in its nature and the individual's behavior and self-perceived reality has been the main focus. The theory that has been applied in the study is the pragmatic micro perspective symbolic interactionism with the following theoretical starting points: symbols, displacement, deprived of identity and mutual aid. The thematic structure of the analysis has been based on the study’s three research questions of which the first theme highlighted displacement and deprived of identity as the two main themes in the life stories. The second theme dealt with the importance of group membership, which clearly showed that the newsgroup means a great deal for strengthening their personal identity. The third theme revealed that the changes in lifestyle and habits have been both psychological and physical. Whether or not the spatial separation many informants made from their parents can measure up to an emotional separation that they have not yet reached were discussed and lastly an implication that a combination of professional help such as therapy and newsgroup as a supplement may be a good method to reach the emotional separation.

Full textThe following study deals with the participation of user-representatives from various social enterprises. The overall aim of the study is to examine how participation can be influenced by social interactions between future social workers and user-representatives from social enterprises. A qualified study has been carried out through a participant observation for two days in a future-workshop between social work students, teachers and user-representatives. Empirical data has been analyzed by means of symbolic interactionsm and Goffman's dramaturgical theater analysis. The age range of study participants is at 22-70 years and it was predominately female group of participants. The study-results show that the inclusion of real influence is something pursued both from the policies of the National board and from community citizens, in this study in terms of students and user representatives. However, this is nothing that shows in practice, it is rather a pseudoparticipation which includes a lot of talk and little action, where participation does not lead to any real influence. It requires an even division of power between different group representatives to provide the right conditions in the making of participation on equal terms. Lack of time is a preventing factor. It appears that the success of participation is that we share the same understanding of reality and pursue a power leveling to fight stigmatization. This requires common meeting places. The study shows that a long term approach for a successful implementation at all stages from education to the workplace to the citizen is required. There is at long chain where much can go wrong along the way. This may explain the inertia detected in this study.

Full textAbstrakt

Full textThis study aimed to investigate how school drop-outs describe their way back to any type of occupation. The authors carried out a qualitative study with interviews based on an interview guide to be able to answer the studies questions at issue, with the intention to capture knowledge about the young adults’ opinion concerning turning-points and the meaning of self-image and relations in the surroundings. In a total, four interviews were carried out with young adults in the ages of 17-20 years, whom had dropped-out of high-school but were, at the time of the interviews, back in some kind of occupation. The authors used previously published science articles, along with the theoretical perspective of symbolic interactionism and KASAM to analyze the data. The result of this study showed that all of the young adults had experienced some kind of turning-point during their way back to an occupation, which they found to be substantial. There were some variations in how these turning-points occurred; they turned out to be an event as well as a meeting. Further on, the authors has found that self-image have had a great effect on the young adults´ possibilities to handle turning-point situations, as well as their motivation for studies, and that relations with factors of guidance and a respectful treatment has been crucial for the step towards an occupation.

Full textThe aim of this study was to examine how women’s exercising is formed in different types of gym settings due to the increasing popularity of women only gyms. The study used symbolic interactionism as theoretic reference since it problematizes the taken for granted, a common view when it comes to gender differences. Participating observation was used to gather data at two unisex gyms and one women only gym. The result showed that women’s exercising was restrained in both settings due to their framing which appeared to reflect social ideals. This was most obvious at the women only gym though it is important to note that this institution seems to represent a counter reaction against the male culture at unisex gyms. The conclusion is that unisex gyms pose obstacles for women’s exercising, however, an alternative that provides gender segregation in this case seems to delimit women’s opportunity to diverge ideals and thus seems to reproduce the problem.

Full textIn social work clients encounter arts in different contexts as in, for example, daytime activities, employment or job training. The participation in the activities may be voluntary or mandatory. This study examines how specialist crafts tutor work with creative activities in social work and the structures and attitudes necessary to provide conditions for change for the participant. The work places surveyed in this study all used creative methods involving visual arts such as paintings, ceramics, textile and sewing. The study´s purpose is to deepen the understanding of how visual creative activity is used to enable change for users in the field of social work. The activities evaluated in the study all use forms of visual creativity, which include various forms of creativity such as painting, sculpture, textile printing and sewing. The study was conducted based on a qualitative approach and the choice of method was unstructured focus groups with specialist crafts tutors. The method was extended during the research process by a telephone interview. In total, there were two focus group sessions and one telephone interview with a total of six informants. The theoretical framework from which creative activity is highlighted and analyzed is based on symbolic interactionism, where definition of the situation and sympathetic introspection are two key concepts. Other key concepts in the study are Axel Honneth's definition of recognition as well as Martin Buber's interpersonal encounters. The result of the study shows that specialist crafts tutors work contributes to change through structural and pedagogical approaches, which both are permeated by a process-oriented approach where the participant's own processes are central. In the final discussion the potential of creative activities for change within social work is discussed in relation to the theoretical concepts of interpersonal encounters, definition of the situation and symbolic violence to illuminate a choice between two approaches that social pedagogue faces.

Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Sociologiska institutionen, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-192391.

Thesis, Jönköping University, HHJ, Dep. of Behavioural Science and Social Work, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-1183.
This qualitative study aims to examine how cyberbullying appears, who should be responsible for prevention and measures, and how four organizations work against and cooperates round cyberbullying. The result is based on interviews with BRIS, Friends, LunarStorm and Playahead and analyzed with help from symbolic interactionism. The result indicates little difference between cyberbullying and traditional bullying. The tougher language and the quicker circulation of information characterize bullying on the Internet. The responsibility should, according to the organizations, be placed upon the parents, the school and the children. Legislation regarding cyberbullying is insufficient. In the organizations otherwise rather comprehensive work, efficient cooperation is partly lacking.
The new Internet culture and the youths’ considerably higher IT-skills have led to that they to a greater extent have been left alone to interact on the Internet. According to symbolic interaktionism, satisfying development of the identity is highly dependent on social interaction and the idea of the generalized other. Therefore, the adult absence could be one of the most important explanations to cyberbullying, as well as to why the language has become more harsh and ruthless. To sum up, this essay emphasizes the need of adult presence in the new Internet culture.

Full textThe purpose of the study was to study how the concept of equality of treatment is constructedthrough the use of language in equality of treatment plans drawn up in a western Swedishmunicipality during the school year of 2012/2013. Questions were formulated in relation withthe aim of the study. How is the concept of equality of treatment constructed by the languageuse in equality of treatment plans, what similarities or differences can be seen in how theconcept of equality of treatment is constructed through language use in the different equalityof treatment plans? The study is based on the sections of the discrimination law thatprescribes that an equality of treatment plan should be established in every educationalsystem, as well as in previous research of equality of treatment in relation to concepts such asjustice, discrimination and values. The study is also based on socialconstructionism andsymbolic interactionism. The equality of treatment plans were analyzed using qualitative textanalysis inspired by discourse analysis perspectives and quantitative content analysis focusedon grammar and vocabulary that are frequent in the plans. The result shows that the schoolsuse the words equality of treatment plan, discrimination, feel, goals, action, and responsibilityto construct equality of treatment. There are also signs that some of these words shall holdthe same meaning for all participants in the process. The schools present a reality whereaction is needed to achieve equality of treatment but the schools do not agree on type ofactions. There are clear signs that the schools define the situation regarding equality oftreatment in different ways, which may have effect on the practical work of equality of treatment.

Full textThe purpose of the study was, with initial position from two particular youth homes, to survey the staff’s experiences regarding different youth cultures that might occur at the institutions and how they react to them. The question formulations were as follows: What kind of youth cultures might occur at the institution and how are they being expressed, according to some of the staff members? How do the same staff members, individually, see their role and prospect to influence the type of youth culture that is developing on the institution? Earlier research in the field were used as theoretical starting positions as well as the concepts of “looking-glass self“, “the generalized other” and ”the overtaking of roles” in the symbolic-interactionism. Qualitative research interviews were carried through with three of the employees at the two youth homes and the results of the study evinced that both positive and negative youth cul-tures develops at both of the institutions, concluding the fact that youths affect each other both ways. The results of the positive culture is that the youths identifies themselves with other youths, support each other and by comprehending more might change their attitude toward different matters. The negative culture might be expressed with youths who bring their trou-bles to the institution, youths who discuss divergent subjects within the group, exposure to bad influence which leads to negative behaviour. Henceforth, the personnel considered that they have a propitious potential to influence the youths and the conditions between them. It was deemed crucial that the personnel group acted alike and kept a jointly approach toward the youths.

Full textToday, school is often the subject of debate in the media. A common topic is the lack of order in the classroom and how it leads to poorer results. The general consensus is that tougher discipline is the solution. The aim of this study is to describe how five “förstelärare” create order in their classrooms. To achieve the aim, qualitative interviews based on a vignette were conducted, which our informants were presented with. To analyze the results different theories like symbolic interactionism and leadership theory were used. The results showed that none of the informants was positive to methods such as intimidation, detention, ejection or other forms of punishment. All informants reported a democratic leadership and instead argued for establishing of assurance as the best method, to create a good working environment. They mean that standards of conduct and clear instructions will provide assurance and prevent students’ behavior problems, while dialogs will help students to understand what they have done, so that they do not repeat their behavior. Our hope is to give other teachers tips and ideas on how order can be created in the classroom.

Full textThe aim of this study was to examine how individuals who have left a criminal lifestyle may experience their present life. A symbolic interaction approach was the theoretical framework for this research. Qualitative interviews were conducted with seven individuals who have stated having had and left a criminal lifestyle. The results showed that how individuals experience their present life is highly dependent on individuals’ own view of themselves as well as on how others view them. A sense of being judged on the basis of previous lifestyle and a strive to leave the criminal identity could be discerned. There seems to be of importance for individuals to separate themselves from their prior lifestyle, both in thought and action. By doing this, they demonstrate their change both to themselves and their surroundings. By con-demning their previous destructive actions but not themselves as persons, they can maintain a positive self-image. Making good and giving back to society also tends to be of importance. Furthermore the study indicates that individuals, in addition to a sense of belonging, need to experience both resemblance and contrast in interaction in order to fully be able to leave the criminal identity. Some implications for social work practise were discussed.

Full textFor young adult’s age 18-25 years, Instagram is a popular social network. With the expansion of social media, a new kind of commercial role- model has been created, the so- called Influencers. Based on the understanding and interpretation of previous research, this study will look into what impact the social network phenomena Instagram-Influencers have on young girls’ self-perception and identity. The purpose of this study is to answer the following questions: How do young women experience the social network Instagram and its Influencers? How is the identity of young women affected by the Influencers on the social media Instagram? In what way do young women experience that their identity is being shaped, in those cases it has an impact? To study this, qualitative interviews are used and conducted with six different active female users, between ages 18-25. The collected data were analyzed with a thematic inductive approach. The result is linked to three main themes; Instagram's importance, being an Influencer, Influencers and their impact on their followers, as well as the subcategory: Identity online and identity offline. In my analyzation, the conclusion is, that there is a clear link between an increased digital interaction and social comparison, and their effect on identity and self-perception. The respondents believe that the Influencers display a misleading view of reality. The followers get the impression that the content is filtered and only highlights flattering topics, and that the purpose with this is to enforce and emphasize the value of the Influencers’ statements. Similarly, the respondents themselves are affected to construct images of happiness, but in reality – offline- the feeling of loneliness and sadness occurs. The end discussion addresses the clear link between increased digital interactions and the sense of social comparison, the need for conformity and role-limiting behavior.

Full textThe purpose of the study was to investigate the possibilities and / or obstacles that exist in the prevention work against ANDT (Alcohol, narcotics, doping and tobacco) use among secondary school students (age 12 – 16) through the perspective of the professionals. The method used for data collection is semi-structured interviews with two professional groups, both working closely with young people. The selected occupational groups were school counselors and field secretaries / field assistants. The collected material was analyzed through thematic analysis where six themes emerged, these six themes were then sorted into three main categories which were: the vision of and the work methods in preventive work, school and the field, family and leisure. The empirical material was interpreted through the perspective of symbolic interactionism. The results of the study show that Collaboration is essential when it comes to preventative work. Good cooperation is an opportunity for preventive work, if cooperation fails, this will instead be an obstacle to the entire work. In addition to collaboration, clear guidelines and routines are important factors for how the ANDT preventive work is carried out in the municipalities. Well-functioning ANDT preventative work can be created through enhanced cooperation and trust building between the professional groups, but also with the home and the youth.

Full textThe Swedish Riksdag decided in the spring of 2012 that single women also should have access to assisted reproduction in Sweden. Up until now, and so far, single women have travelled abroad for fertility treatment. The purpose of this study has been to explore how solo mothers (women who have chosen to obtain children as a single parent) reasoned and reason about this choice, and how they view the paternity process and the upcoming legislative changes. Participants were sought through an Internet site for an association where all members are single mothers by choice. Five solo mothers talked about their reasoning in semi-structured interviews. The material was then categorized, coded and thematized, and analyzed by using symbolic interactionism, changes in values and the development of society. The results show that the respondents really thought through their decision to found a family as a single parent. They see the legislative changes mainly as symbolically important, as their form of the family will be recognized by society. They believe that the lack of donors and the age limitations in Sweden will result in that single women continues to travel abroad for assisted reproduction technology. The negative opinions that have emerged during interviews are related to health care contacts in Sweden and how some single mothers have been treated by social service caseworkers. The paternity process could become more legally secure if clear, national regulations were issued also for the paternity process regarding donor children.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to examine high school students´ attitudes towards immigration. Several factors that may influence the attitudes were presented, including gender, national origin and experiences of different cultures. The study was conducted in a small town in central Sweden. A total of 195 students participated in the survey and four follow-up interviews were conducted. Concepts such as attitudes, immigrants and social distance are central to the theoretical understanding of this study. The results have been analysed using theoretical frameworks such as symbolic interactionism and stigmatization. The theoretical foundations have assisted our understanding of how immigrants are assigned negative characteristics and the discrimination against them. Previous research and studies have been used in designing this study, as well as to compare results and thus being able to see changes over time. A conclusion that has been drawn from this study is that negative attitudes towards immigration are often based on a fear of change and that immigrants are regarded as social burdens, a threat and an increased competition for tangible assets. The most important underlying factor to negative attitudes towards immigration is class affiliation where knowledge and education has central influence. Experiences of cultures other than ones own also increase tolerance concerning immigration. Compared to previous studies results show that, generally, positive attitudes toward immigrants increases, although there are still some extremely negative attitudes. Young people need to be given possibility to discuss these issues. The fields of social work as well as education are faced with the challenge to allow open discussion based on fundamental democratic values to increase tolerance towards minorities.

Full textThis study aims to examine how adolescents with diabetes describe and value their experience of participating in a support group and how they describe the issues of being a teenager with diabetes. This is a qualitative study and we have interviewed three young women who have been participating in a support group. The results of the interviews were analyzed through a phenomenological method and then compared to earlier research and interpreted through symbolic interactionism and Erikson's development-theory, which were our theories of choice. Our findings support earlier research when stating that support groups are important and necessary for adolescents with chronic illnesses. Our interviewees stated that they think that one of the most important benefits of support groups is to meet other people in their situation; same age and same chronic illness.

Full textBackground: The choice of subject in this study is based on the altered perception of the importance of a relation between parents and children the last century. The enlarged importance of parent's involvement in their children's lives makes it interesting to study how these parents are made participated by the social worker and their perspectives of a work that promotes participation among these parents and how the social worker perceive their discretion in this work. Purpose: This study aims to describe and analyse, from a symbolic interactionistic perspective, the perspective of social workers about their discretion and the work of promoting participation among parents with children in foster care. Method: This study has a qualitative approach where the material was made by semi-structured interviews and the empirics consists of four transcribed interviews. We contacted social worker who is working with parents that have children placed in foster care to make our selection. The empirics have then been processed and analysed with a thematic analyse model. The result is then presented in relation to this study's theoretical frame and previous research. Result: The results of this study shows that availability and continuity are, according to the social worker, of importance in the making of a relation between the social worker and these parents, which in turn can promote the parent's participation and it can also be for the child's best. In this work the social worker experiencing that they have a wide discretion which enables them to scheduled their own time which they spend in the work of promoting participation among parents with children in foster care. At the same time, they also describe aspects that they feel is limiting their discretion.

Background: Facebook is a social online network that has expanded in popularity during the course of its existence. Many users manage large parts of their social life and share much information about themselves on Facebook. There is no previous social online network like Facebook, that has had the same development among the internet users. In the use of Facebook users create digital identities, which leave traces on Facebook, even if the user is dead. With this as an aspect, we want to study young adults’ views on digital identities and death on Facebook.
Purpose: Our purpose in this study is to find out how young adults view upon their own as well as others use of Facebook related to digital traces and death.
Method: We chose to use focus group as a method of collecting the empirical material. This method is both qualitative and inductive. The empirical material is analyzed with the symbolic interaction as a methodological approach.
Conclusion: There are many different opinions in our results. The participants in the focus groups see both strengths and weaknesses of the medium Facebook when it comes to death and digital traces. This based on the participants view of Facebook as incomplete medium in this aspect.

Full textBeing a young female manager is an unexplored area that needs to be highlighted. This study therefore aims to explore what it means to work as a young female public servant manager. The sample consisted of four young female managers in a large municipality in Sweden. With an ethnographic research approach, eight participating observations including a focus group interview was performed. The result showed that the managers felt that factors such as age and gender did not play a role in their leadership. Despite this, we perceived a sense of ambivalence in the view of the importance of age and gender by making a difference in their employees’ age and gender. The managers considered that younger, older, male and female employees were needed different treatment. To understand the result of the study in its entirety, theories inspired by Charon and symbolic interactionism was used which emphasizes that we become us by the social interaction with others. Systems theory was also used to show how the managers are affected and also affecting the society’s image of the general management role.

Full textIn their daily contact with children, teachers have a unique role in detecting child-maltreatment, as mandated reporters they are subject to a statutory personal and unconditional notification. Nevertheless, reporting abilities are generally low, and it is assumed that there are a large number of children who are maltreated. The purpose of our study was to investigate school staff’s knowledge and attitudes to act in an appropriate and constructive way if suspicion arises that a child is maltreated. A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews were conducted. The empirical data, evaluated through a thematic analysis and linked to previous research and theoretical perspectives and concepts within symbolic interactionism. Our conclusion is that there is a gap between how teachers act regarding maltreated children and how they are supposed to act according to skolverket. We have identified a lack of ability to identify maltreated children and a hierarchy where teachers can be prevented from completing their mandatory reporting.
