Abstract:
This chapter asks whether there is a third way beyond the two deeply problematic options of either 1) allowing ourselves to be the manipulated objects of a transcendent symbolism (whether ‘projected’ onto a traditionally conceived divinity, or cynically attributed to the ruthless hands of politico-economic power); or 2) appointing ourselves the quasi-divine rulers of a world whose mastery is predicated on the reducibility of the latter to a set of abstract, manipulable symbolic units, i.e. the ‘laws of nature,’ or – as the case may be – the laws of economics, which is every bit as ruthless in its exploitive logic of value-extraction. It suggests that there isindeed a third role for us in relation to symbolism besides being an object of symbolic manipulations or a manipulator of objects through symbols—a unique mode of symbol-making (or symbol-revision) emergent in the harmonized interstices between our inner and outer realities. It would aim at both experiencing and transmitting the power of something like what Gilles Deleuze calls ‘a life’ – that unique quality of the living that is universal in its singularity. Symbols are not merely fabulations of our imagination, but are produced through the indeterminate and dynamically ecological relations of creative becoming.

Voutilainen, Atro. Part-of-Speech Tagging. Edited by Ruslan Mitkov. Oxford University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199276349.013.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
This article outlines the recently used methods for designing part-of-speech taggers; computer programs for assigning contextually appropriate grammatical descriptors to words in texts. It begins with the description of general architecture and task setting. It gives an overview of the history of tagging and describes the central approaches to tagging. These approaches are: taggers based on handwritten local rules, taggers based on n-grams automatically derived from text corpora, taggers based on hidden Markov models, taggers using automatically generated symbolic language models derived using methods from machine tagging, taggers based on handwritten global rules, and hybrid taggers, which combine the advantages of handwritten and automatically generated taggers. This article focuses on handwritten tagging rules. Well-tagged training corpora are a valuable resource for testing and improving language model. The text corpus reminds the grammarian about any oversight while designing a rule.

Hodder, Ian. Çatalhöyük: A Prehistoric Settlement on the Konya Plain. Edited by Gregory McMahon and Sharon Steadman. Oxford University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780195376142.013.0043.

Abstract:
This article discusses findings from excavations at Çatalhöyük. There is limited evidence for specialized and differentiated economic, political, and social functions at Çatalhöyük. Rather, the effect of a “town” (a large agglomeration of people living packed against each other) is produced by the repetition of social behavior within houses. Daily acts were heavily routinized and reconfirmed the social order. People were brought up within daily routines through which they learned the roles and rules of society. In addition, these rules and conventions were set within an elaborate symbolic system that centered around wild animals and the ancestors buried beneath the floors.

Abstract:
This chapter traces how the rules that governed New England working-class sociability changed dramatically at country and western events. The cowboy names, the clothing, the decor, and the music worked in concert to suspend everyday rules—sociologists would call this phenomenon “alternation.” Normally used to explain how groups of people construct alternate symbolic universes, alternation relies on the use of name change, different dress, and different music in order to radically change individuals' worldview. Alternation describes the constructed frontier space of the country and western event and helps to explain how New England country and western fans of different ethnic backgrounds came to share the same space and work across difference to create a new community.

Abstract:
The reconstruction of the organisational model of Chinese society, with particular reference to the models of forming social relations. The books explores the most important notions of Confucian ethics, the rules of social exchange as well as other terms which influence behavioural norms, perception of the world and basic communication strategies. A Chinese face lian 臉 (moral face) and mian 面 (social face) is described on this cultural matrix. It is a central notion from the perspective of internalised social control, the most important symbolic protected value, built by people in the space of social roles and bonds.
