I address these issues through the use of a commonsense knowledge base, a predefined set of rules regarding driving behavior, and a means of updating the base set of rules as anomalies are detected. In order to explore this problem I have built a hardware platform that was used to evaluate existing anomaly detection developed within the lab and that will serve as an evaluation platform for future work in this area. The platform is based on the open-source MIT RACECAR project that integrates the most basic aspect of an driving autonomous vehicle - lidar, camera, accelerometer, and computer - onto the frame of an RC car. We created a set of rules regarding traffic light color transitions to test the car's ability to navigate cones (which represent traffic light colors) and detect anomalies in the traffic light transition order. Anomalies regularly occurred in the car's driving environment and its driving rules were updated as a consequence of the logged anomalies. The car was able to successfully navigate the course and the rules (plausible traffic light color transitions) were updated when repeated anomalies were seen.
by Tianye Chen.
M. Eng.
M.Eng. Abstract:
Historically, the term robot was originally associated to the human form and also to his behavior. The human being, during its evolutionary process, has developed high level mental abilities such as memory, language, will, among others. Such features allow him to compare information obtained from the environment and from his peers with their memories and deliberate actions or communications by means of a symbolic language, often ambiguous. The research area of robotics cooperation focuses on the interaction among robots and has presented solutions for the adaptive control that, in most cases, provides the robotic agents with reactive capabilities in response to environmental stimuli. However, when the interaction involves robot and human, the approaches that are available in the literature, assign the deliberative role only to the human. This is a constrained solution, especially when looking for new interaction forms that allow a robotic system to effectively collaborate with humans and to tutor the learning of them. Aiming to contribute to the solution of this problem is proposed and presented a new control approach based on distributed architecture that allows the deliberation of cooperative and collaborative behavior. Moreover, the new architecture model allows the interoperation of distributed multi-agents, and thus, distinct parts of a robot manipulator. The presented Scara3D system is used to validate the applicability of the model. The Scara3D is a graphical interface that represents the generator of the virtual environment, the bottom most layer of the global context of architecture. The tests of virtual environment involved the robot teleoperation, and its results prove the integration and communication between local and global contexts of architecture. For the robotic agents and humans decide and deliberate actions during collaborative tasks, they must share the same mental model of the elements involved in this environment. The adopted strategy consists of representation by means of a symbolic language, restricted and non-ambiguous, understandable by humans and interpretable by computers. In this sense, the rules of human-robot collaborative environment are then defined and described in terms of L-Forum, a language that allows abstracting collaborative environments. A case study involving human-robot cooperation in a tic-tac-toe is described in detail, as well as design and development of hardware and software that operate it. The tests describe situations that require the robot selection and application of different rules, and their results validate the process of behavior deliberation by the system. Therefore it is possible to conclude that the collaborative rules usage provides an extra abstraction level to the system, and makes it more flexible and adaptive in environments shared by humans.

In this thesis, we discuss different techniques to bridge the gap between two different approaches to artificial intelligence: the symbolic and the connectionist paradigm. Both approaches have quite contrasting advantages and disadvantages. Research in the area of neural-symbolic integration aims at bridging the gap between them. Starting from a human readable logic program, we construct connectionist systems, which behave equivalently. Afterwards, those systems can be trained, and later the refined knowledge be extracted.

Role Playing Games (RPG) had been constantly criticized or defended in many forms, several times without a scientific approach. These kind of games appear in the playful behaviors of many adolescents. With the increasing use of RPG on education and more researches been developed in the area, it makes necessary a psychological approach of the matter. To make this possible, this work relates the speech of some players with intrinsic aspects of the RPG dynamics. A view of the RPG characteristics could be done with these data, as well as a look on the relations that the subjects make with the game and its possible consequences. The data were grouped in categories after some questionnaires and interviews had been done. The final results show the way of being of a small group of players of Espirito Santo's state and allows a psychological analysis of the characteristics collected. It was possible to evaluate what is the place of RPG in the subjects routine, as well as specific characteristics of the game that are of special interests of Psychology.

Abstract:
Deep Learning has revolutionized the whole discipline of machine learning, heavily impacting fields such as Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, and other domains concerned with the processing of raw inputs. Nonetheless, Deep Networks are still difficult to interpret, and their inference process is all but transparent. Moreover, there are still challenging tasks for Deep Networks: contexts where the success depends on structured knowledge that can not be easily provided to the networks in a standardized way. We aim to investigate the behavior of Deep Networks, assessing whether they are capable of learning complex concepts such as rules and constraints without explicit information, and then how to improve them by providing such symbolic knowledge in a general and modular way. We start by addressing two tasks: learning the rule of a game and learning to construct the solution to Constraint Satisfaction Problems. We provide the networks only with examples, without encoding any information regarding the task. We observe that the networks are capable of learning to play by the rules and to make feasible assignments in the CSPs. Then, we move to Argument Mining, a complex NLP task which consists of finding the argumentative elements in a document and identifying their relationships. We analyze Neural Attention, a mechanism widely used in NLP to improve networks' performance and interpretability, providing a taxonomy of its implementations. We exploit such a method to train an ensemble of deep residual networks and test them on four different corpora for Argument Mining, reaching or advancing the state of the art in most of the datasets we considered for this study. Finally, we realize the first implementation of neural-symbolic argument mining. We use the Logic Tensor Networks framework to introduce logic rules during the training process and establish that they give a positive contribution under multiple dimensions.

Abstract:
The development of a speech recognition system requires the availability of a large amount of resources namely, large corpora of text and speech, a dictionary of pronunciation. As a result, the development of a SRAP for Arabic dialects is fraught with many difficulties, namely the lack of large amounts of resources and the absence of a standard spelling as these dialects are spoken and not written. In this perspective, the work of this thesis is part of the development of a SRAP for the Tunisian dialect. A first part of the contributions consists in developing a variant of CODA (Conventional Orthography for Arabic Dialectal) for the Tunisian dialect. In fact, this convention is designed to provide a detailed description of the guidelines applied to the Tunisian dialect. Given the guidelines of CODA, we have created our corpus TARIC: Corpus of the interaction of the railways of the Tunisian Arab in the field of SNCFT. In addition to these resources, the pronunciation dictionary is indispensable for the development of a peech recognition system. In this regard, in the second part of the contributions, we aim at the creation of a system called conversion(Grapheme-Phonème) G2P which allows to automatically generate this phonetic dictionary. All these resources described before are used to adapt a SRAP for the MSA of the LIUM laboratory to the Tunisian dialect in the field of SNCFT. Kammer, Quentin. Thesis, Bordeaux 3, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018BOR30034.

Abstract:
This PhD dissertation examines how Nelson Goodman understands rightness of projection, i.e. the transition from a set of items to a wider one. A projection is justified by its conformity to general rules of projection and rules are justified by their conformity to some projections we consider valid. To justify, all one needs to do is to describe: a rule is justified if it can count as a description of admitted projections. Yet this call for description faces a dilemma. If a rule is a standard for rightness of its applications, how could it be justified by its sole descriptive adequacy to those cases of application? If a rule is justified by nothing else, what could distinguish it from a mere description of our regular behaviors? Our object is to show how Goodman could resolve this dilemma

Abstract:
This research focuses on the analysis of pictorial images from objects of Germanic/early Scandinavian cultures in order to discriminate elements which are only applied for decorative reasons from those which also express symbolic values. At the outset I introduced an interpretation of the terms 'signs' and 'symbols' in order to inform the reader to which extent these terms were applied. It appeared that techniques, such as the geographical and chronological classification, traditionally used by archaeologists and historians to analyse objects/artefacts, were not always sufficient enough to gain all information which images may offer. Sometimes it seems to be difficult to determine if certain images shown on objects from early mediaeval, central and northern European origin, were created as a space-filling decoration only or if they held additional, probably symbolic, information as well. I have investigated aspects from visual perception, as applied within the domains of psychology, visual art and design. The methods, as they are introduced in this thesis, can be used as a identification scheme, applied on objects of great diversity. I have applied them on guldgubber (little embossed gold foils), bracteates and Gotland picture-stones. Objects of great historical and geographic difference, as well as physical diversity, such as size and material were chosen purposely to create an overview of the symbolic expressions in Germanic/early Scandinavian artefacts and to test the extent of the identification method derived from the domain of visual perception. A detailed analysis of sixty four guldgubber, found in Lundeborg, near Gudme, on the island of Fyn (Denmark), is placed in an appendix. An analysis of these objects appeared to be particularly interesting because it is not known what the purpose of guldgubber were to the present day.

Abstract:
This is a study of nationalism and its visual representation in Taiwan’s architecture. Although nationalism studies have achieved significant theoretic breakthroughs in sociology, politics and history over the past decades, its close relationship with architecture has not received enough attention. In recent related architectural literature, too much emphasis is placed on stylistic analysis concerning ‘national style’, and less on those wider social, cultural and political factors which also play an important role in shaping nationalistic architecture during nation-formation. In order to bridge the gap, this thesis attempts to carry out a cross-disciplinary study, engaging architecture with the notion of nationalism and other relative perspectives in a quest for better understanding. In doing so, Taiwan’s nationalistic architecture is divided into four different building types: the martyrs’ shrine, the museum, the parliament building and the memorial hall. By examining these types and cases, this thesis argues that nationalistic architecture is a particular type of building created by specialised architects who were encouraged to select certain visible and cultural markers, establishing a symbolic link connecting the current nation with its previous ethnic roots in the service of politics during the age of nation-building. As a part of a growing body of research on nationalism and its architectural representations, this thesis aims to advance our understanding of the important issue regarding the relationship between nationalism and architecture in Taiwan, and to contribute to future research on similar topics.

Patrizi, Luca. Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012AIXM3119.

Full text
Abstract:
The root of the word adab is not found in the Qur'ān. In pre-Islamic literature as well as in the hadith, its use is limited exclusively to the sense of “invitation to a banquet”, “education”, “correction” and “punishment” (addaba, ta'dīb). After a period in which scholars did not taken seriously the opinion of Muslim linguists and thinkers concerning the etymology of adab from the “invitation to the Banquet of God (ma'dubat Allāh)”, more recent scholarship has questioned this opinion. In fact, the notion of a divine or sacred ceremonial banquet in the history of ancient civilizations is quite widespread, finding its origin in the archetype of the “Divine Banquet” or “Divine Hospitality”, which had a strong influence on the religious and cultural contexts of a number of different civilizations. However, from the beginning of the 9th century CE Islamic religious literature also began to use the term adab in a new usage, that one might call “technical”. The source of this semantic enrichment should be traced to the court secretaries, the kuttāb, the Persian mawālī who were well-known translators and transmitters of Persian state and cultural heritage. In addition to influencing the cultural imaginary of classical adab literature, the Sasanian court imagery will also influence the technical terminology, as well as the practice in Sufism, producing a genre of the Sufi literature, the ādāb al-ṣūfiyya literature

The analysis of the urban naming establishment both in synchrony and diachrony allows to observe the political and memory-linked concerns at stake, focusing on this medium. The purpose of this study is to highlight the consequences of the political and symbolic confrontations around the corpus of urban namings within Southern France during World War II, especially under the regime of Vichy. The area of the study in question corresponds to the southern part of what was named the Realm of the Marshall, that is to say the 30 departments of the free zone. The chronological markers stretch from the 1938 Munich Conference to the 1948 Coup of Prague, going through the Liberation. Collecting and analysing the decisions of urban naming modifications aims at estimating the diffusion of the National Revolution ideology through the daily and permanent tool that is the blue street plate. The removals of republican monuments are also mentioned as well as the memory-linked confrontations that emerged at the Liberation

Thesis, Paris 4, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009PA040201.

Abstract:
The whole thought of Augustine seems to be the result of a radical questioning: why is there the Other and not just the One? This question leads him to adopt an original reasoned position which ultimately takes the original form of a monastic rule. The broad themes on which the Rule relies outline an ascent from the desire for beauty as revelation of the turning towards the One to the discovery of the relations within the Trinity as a place where desire and desired are united. My research is informed by a systematic comparison of the rules of monastic communities of the 4th and 5th centuries. The Augustinian community is not primarily either a community of ascetics or of men aiming for perfection, but a community experiencing the unity of the Trinity lived by and in the Church. The sacramentum is the means which permits man to make his own the unity of the Trinity. The sacramental symbol leads the individual to interiority and causes him to experience that love of the One in which all are able to come together and unite. In this shared love, the dialectic between the individual and the community is resolved. This discovery leads to an analysis of the idea of the symbol in Augustine and to a re-examination of certain current interpretations of his thought. In the light of these conclusions, it is possible to understand better the central role of worship in the unity of the City and to define the conditions of political unity

Abstract:
The semantic web aims to make the meaning of data on the web explicit and machine processable. Harking back to Leibniz in its vision, it imagines a world of interlinked information that computers `understand' and `know' how to process based on its meaning. Spearheaded by the World Wide Web Consortium, ontology languages OWL and RDF form the core of the current technical offerings. RDF has successfully enabled the construction of virtually unlimited webs of data, whilst OWL gives the ability to express complex relationships between RDF data triples. However, the formal semantics of these languages limit themselves to that aspect of meaning that can be captured by mechanical inference rules, leaving many open questions as to other aspects of meaning and how they might be made machine processable. The Semantic Web has faced a number of problems that are addressed by the included publications. Its germination within academia, and logical semantics has seen it struggle to become familiar, accessible and implementable for the general IT population, so an overview of semantic technologies is provided. Faced with competing `semantic' languages, such as the ISO's Topic Map standards, a method for building ISO-compliant Topic Maps in the OWL DL language has been provided, enabling them to take advantage of the more mature OWL language and tools. Supplementation with rules is needed to deal with many real-world scenarios and this is explored as a practical exercise. The available syntaxes for OWL have hindered domain experts in ontology building, so a natural language syntax for OWL designed for use by non-logicians is offered and compared with similar offerings. In recent years, proliferation of ontologies has resulted in far more than are needed in any given domain space, so a mechanism is proposed to facilitate the reuse of existing ontologies by giving contextual information and leveraging social factors to encourage wider adoption of common ontologies and achieve interoperability. Lastly, the question of meaning is addressed in relation to the need to define one's terms and to ground one's symbols by anchoring them effectively, ultimately providing the foundation for evolving a `Pragmatic Web' of action.

Abstract:
Various Artificial Intelligence methods have been developed to reproduce intelligent human behaviour. These methods allow to reproduce some human reasoning process using the available knowledge. Each method has its advantages, but also some drawbacks. Hybrid systems combine different approaches in order to take advantage of their respective strengths. These hybrid intelligent systems also present the ability to acquire new knowledge from different sources and so to improve their application performance. This thesis presents our research in the field of hybrid neuro-symbolic systems, and in particular the study of machine learning tools used for constructive knowledge acquisition. We are interested in the automatic acquisition of theoretical knowledge (rules) and empirical knowledge (examples). We present a new hybrid system we implemented: INSS - Incremental Neuro-Symbolic System. This system allows knowledge transfer from the symbolic module to the connectionist module (Artificial Neural Network - ANN), through symbolic rule compilation into an ANN. We can refine the initial ANN knowledge through neural learning using a set of examples. The incremental ANN learning method used, the Cascade-Correlation algorithm, allows us to change or to add new knowledge to the network. Then, the system can also extract modified (or new) symbolic rules from the ANN and validate them. INSS is a hybrid machine learning system that implements a constructive knowledge acquisition method. We conclude by showing the results we obtained with this system in different application domains: ANN artificial problems(The Monk's Problems), computer aided medical diagnosis (Toxic Comas), a cognitive modelling task (The Balance Scale Problem) and autonomous robot control. The results we obtained show the improved performance of INSS and its advantages over others hybrid neuro-symbolic systems

Abstract:
In this work, we addressed the problem of developing an agent-based artificial general intelligence that can be implemented in compact and power-efficient electronic hardware. We proposed an approach intended to show the feasibility of using this conceptual hardware-based architecture to replicate simple cognitive behaviours. This research started with surveys on cognitive behaviours and their decision-making architectures and compared them with a production rule-based parallel processing computation architecture. In order to demonstrate their potential, a sample case study of the homing behaviour of honey bees was undertaken to demonstrate the possibility of reproducing cognitive behaviours using a production rule-based cognitive architecture. We developed rule-based agents for a mobile platform which, under experimental conditions, made decisions to retrace its path back to a target position by comparison with the reference images. The agent made consistent overall cognitive decisions using fuzzified elements and guided the system reliably to target positions. Then, the research shifted to finding cognitive data representations and constructing cognitive decision-making structures in that production rule-based system. We introduced a new symbolic way of describing the significant features in an image, which is to use a collection of fuzzy symbolic elements to describe the characteristics of the current environmental information. It filtered out any unnecessary details, yet retained sufficient information describing the frame to enable reliable comparisons between images for the purposes of navigation. Numerical data were converted into fuzzy symbolic representations of the surrounding environment. The modified Fuzzy Inference System includes the reasoning rules used to support the cognitive decision-making process. One of the main disadvantages of a rule-based approach is the effort spent on developing rules. In order to reduce the workload of developing rules manually for agents, a modified Association Rules Mining (ARM) method was introduced to discover effective rules for agents autonomously, based on training data sets. This novel rule development method has been demonstrated through a trainable autonomous parking system, which can develop rules for autonomous parking agents.
Thesis (Ph.D.) -- University of Adelaide, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 2021

Abstract:
104
In the modern life, more and more portable devices contain embedded microprocessors because of process shrinking and popular use of SoC (system-on-chip). Quality of SoC depends heavily on hard IPs, so standard cells play an important role in SoC. Process shrinking very quickly, generation of standard cells must catch up with the technology migration. For layout engineers, it is an extreme challenge to generate new style handcrafted standard cells in a small periods of time. Challenges include different numbers of metal layers used, different numbers of masks in a generation (e.g., double patterning / triple patterning), more and more specific design rules need to be considered…, etc. More and more researchers focus on technology migration, hoping to lighten burdens on layout engineers. To the best of my knowledge, there are two types of technology migration: type 1 is to directly migrate the original layout topology with compaction and new design rules; type 2 is to transfer the original layout to symbolic layout first and then convert it to physical layout through new process.

Awiti, Jane. "Communication rules of the Maasai and the Akamba : a comparative analysis." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/5312.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated the communication rules in the family structures of the Maasai and the Akamba cultures with the aim of comparing the core symbols emanating from the rules. The researcher used the qualitative design to identify and compare the communication rules of the rural Maasai of the Rift Valley Province and the rural Akamba of the Eastern Province of Kenya. The study focused on male and female adult individuals in family situations who were familiar with the traditional expectations of their cultures. Data was collected through focus group and in-depth interviews. From the data it was concluded that although the Maasai and the Akamba are from two different ethnic groups of Africa, namely the Nilo-Hamitic and Bantu respectively, the core symbols of their communication rules that are similar far outnumber those that are different. This phenomenon was noted when comparing the different levels of relationship within the family structures, namely, communication between spouses, communication between parents and children, and communication between siblings. One of the important findings of this study is that there are more similarities than differences in the cultures of the Maasai and the Akamba at family level. Therefore, the similarities of core symbols could imply that ethnic differences should not lead to the assumption that cultural practices will be significantly different. However, similar cultural practices or core symbols might not necessarily rule out conflict, as was indeed the case with the Maasai and the Akamba.Another finding was that the most outstanding core symbol in both cultures was respect, which was the fulcrum of most of the other core symbols in the communication rules.
Communication Science
D. Steyn, Raita. "Christian divine, holy and saintly protection of African rulers in the Byzantine ‘Coptic’ iconographic tradition." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/12506.

Full text
Abstract:
D.Litt. et Phil. (Greek)
This thesis deals with the Christian divine, holy and saintly protection of African rulers in the Afro-Byzantine ‘Coptic’ (mainly Nubian and Ethiopian) iconographic tradition. The term ‘icon’ is used in its Byzantine Orthodox meaning as “a theological art picture; a religious, sacred image”, according to the theological and artistic Byzantine prescriptions.1 The term is also applied to frescos, murals, mosaics, larger wooden panels, illustrations in manuscripts and scrolls and smaller items such as protective amulets and charms, depicting a Christian holy representation. The iconographic themes, representing authority and its preservation and protection will be discussed, analysed and examined, the two coefficients being authority and protection of royals and their deputies and officials (i.e. the ‘protected’) on the one hand, and on the other hand Christ, the Holy Virgin, angels, military and non-military saints, supernatural and holy beings (i.e. the ‘protectors’). Firstly, a historical overview of the Byzantine and Afro-Byzantine Orthodox society in terms of religious, social, cultural and political influences is presented and the importance of Orthodox iconography and hagiography and the transformation of local Afro-Byzantine themes are analysed. As such, once the conversion from paganism to Christianity took place in Africa, influences of the Byzantine iconography and hagiography were transformed and integrated with local African Orthodox themes. Byzantine ideology and political theory as well as their relevance for the Coptic-Egyptian, Nubian and Ethiopian context have been discussed, while the artistic and symbolic iconographic representations of the Byzantine (and Medieval Afro-Byzantine) periods...

Das, Priyanka. "Optimal Relay Selection in Interference-Constrained Underlay Cooperative Cognitive Radio." Thesis, 2018. http://etd.iisc.ac.in/handle/2005/4137.

Full text
Abstract:
Cognitive radio (CR) promises to significantly improve the utilization of scarce wireless spectrum. In the underlay mode of CR, which is the focus of the thesis, a secondary user (SU) can simultaneously transmit on the same band as a higher priority primary user (PU) so long as the interference it causes to the PU must be constrained. These interference constraints severely limit the performance of the SUs. Cooperative relaying combined with selection exploits spatial diversity to improve the performance of interference-constrained SUs. In it, one among the available relays is selected for every instantaneous channel power gains of the various links that include the secondary communication links as well as the interference links between the secondary transmitters and the primary receiver. The mapping between the channel power gains and the selected relay is determined by the relay selection (RS) rule employed by the secondary network. Furthermore, it also depends on the interference constraint, which sets underlay CRapart from conventional wireless communications. Although the peak interference constraint is well-studied in the literature on underlay CR, cooperative relaying for the less conservative average interference constraint has not been as thoroughly studied. In this thesis, we focus on developing optimal RS rules that either minimize the average symbol error probability (SEP) or maximize the average rate of the secondary network that is subject to an average interference constraint. We first develop an SEP-optimal RS rule and its two practically implementable variants when the relays are not aware of the instantaneous state of the direct source-to-destination (SD) link. The proposed rules determine which relay to select and whether to select none of the relays at all as a function of the various channel power gains. They outperform several ad hoc RS rules proposed in the literature for underlay CR and generalize the conventional interference-unconstrained RS rule. Next, we present a novel, SD-aware SEP-optimal RS rule for an average interference-constrained underlay CR network. Akey point that the rule highlights -- for the first time -- is that, for the average interference constraint, the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) ofthe direct SD link affects the choice of the optimal relay. Furthermore, as the SINR increases, the odds that no relay transmits increase. We also propose a low feedback and near-optimal variant of the SD-aware SEP-optimal RS rule that requires just one bit of feedback about the state of the direct SD link to the relays. Compared to the SD-unaware RS rules, these rules markedly reduce the SEP by up to two orders of magnitude. We then analyze the average SEPs and diversity order of the proposed RS rules to quantify their performance. Thereafter, we propose a rate-optimal RS rule that maximizes the fading-averaged transmission rate of an average interference-constrained underlay CR network. It differs functionally from the several ad hoc incremental relaying schemes proposed in the literature, but requires a feedback overhead that is comparable to them. We then analyze the average rate of the secondary network for this RS rule. We gain several insights by studying the asymptotic regimes of low and high average SINRs. Lastly, we study a practically-motivated channel state information (CSI) model for an underlay CR network with multiple primary receivers, in which the channel gains of only a subset of the interference links are available at the source and relays. Moreover, this available CSI is imperfect due to channel estimation error. Based on such incomplete and imperfect CSI, the source and relays back-off their transmit powers in order to satisfy an interference outage constraint. We derive the outage probability and average rate of the secondary network for the rate-optimal RS rule. An interesting observation that comes out of our study is that full diversity order is still achievable even with such incomplete and imperfect CSI.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyzes the major theme of ‘postcolonial genealogy’ in portraying the African bending under the weight of colonial history in Le vieux nègre et la médaille, Une vie de boy of Ferdinand Oyono and Le Chercheur d’Afriques of Henri Lopes. Being a product of a colonial Genesis, the African character runs behind the colonizer’s mirror through his Civilizing Mission. René Girard’s ‘double bind’ theory explains how this cultural assimilation is, in Le vieux nègre et la médaille and Une vie de boy, a dead end because the colonizer needs a subordinate and not an equal. The cohabitation of a black housewife with the French Commander in Le Chercheur d’Afriques should be seen as simply an allegory of postcolonial Africa’s dependency on the West. The consequences of the feminization of the African continent are enormous in the post-colonial imaginary. While the colonizer had conquered Africa with his Herculean body, in Oyono’s novels, his Fall is obtained through the aesthetics of Bakhtinian ‘rabaissement’ which degrades his ‘grotesque body’ to that of the colonized. The colonizer and the colonized are neutralized and leveled in their perishable bodies, thus, making futile the Civilizing Mission that operated by ranking races. Power is never total. It is always imperfect, and can never destroy a subjectivity that resists it. In Oyono’s novels, the Fall of the colonial Father is also obtained through the inquisitive gaze that the colonized return back to the colonizer, and through their ‘subversive mimicry’ that parodies his codes. In Une vie de boy and Le Chercheur d’Afriques, the ‘son-Father’ relationship between the hero and the colonial Father, is also symbolic of the ‘Africa-West’ rapports. Living under the specter of the Father, the son has to negotiate his survival between weaning and parricide. The biological miscegenation in Le Chercheur d’Afriques is a metaphor of the ‘rhizome identity’ of the postcolonial African who renounces both the Fathers of Negritude and those of the Civilizing Mission.
Thesis (Ph.D, French) -- Queen's University, 2011-06-24 12:43:30.006
