Full textThe dissertation examines the formation of specific groups, their interests and positions related to children with disabilities and their education and care in Sweden developed during 1960―1980. The theoretical framework is based on Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological theory of social space, which assumes that social life is based on symbolic and cultural systems of beliefs with respectively specific doxas and symbolic economies. Consequently, the analysis has focused on the agents’ position-takings and their struggle for recognition and preferential rights of interpretations. The reconstruction of a “habilitation sphere” was conducted through agents, their positions of interests and position-takings as analytical tools. The positions were mainly reconstructed on articles in journals of 10 professional organizations covering 6 occupations and 4 disability organizations. The occupational groups were paediatric doctors/child psychiatrists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, psychologists and pre-school teachers. The other positions were related to the county council union, four disability organizations (DHR, FUB, RBU and HCK), two of which were parent organizations and in addition, the research field of social medicine. Other materials were e.g. reports of commissions of inquiry. In order to explore the social foundations of the occupational positions, materials from archives have been used. The conclusion shows the significance of: a) historical structures related to the exceptional position of medicine in society, the development of the Swedish health care system in general and the organizations of “special” children b) commissions of inquiry as consecration authorities and processes of social mobilization, both important contributions in shaping symbolic economies, c) myths and ideologies in the exercising of symbolic power, d) alliances between the state and medicine, and between occupational groups and clients. The analysis also shows the strengths of the doxas which could work as a shield for the agents but also as obstacles for external agents when entering the habilitation sphere.

Full textThe aim of this study was to examine and investigate if and how resistance can be seen as a part of everyday social interactions between social workers within an organization. The method of the essay was ethnographic and included participant observations and interviews. The interviews were held in the beginning of the period for observation and at the end. This way of working made it possible to focus on the participants' own meaning-creating process and also created a way to contextualize the observed. The essay was based on the theoretical perspective of symbolic interactionism and an understanding of resistance as part of James C. Scott's theory hidden- and public transcripts. In the participatory observations and in the interviews, participants' own statements and opinions were focused on. Resistance can be understood as everyday resistance. The everyday resistance was based on a interactionist perspective which focused on everyday interactions and general tasks and situations of social workers within the office and between colleagues. How resistance is acted out, in what place is the resistance acted out and what meaning does the social worker give the resistance are questions which the essay centers around. The results and analysis of the essay were presented divided between the concepts of stage and acting. This for clarity and narrativity. The findings of the essay are centered on the themes of power, space, body, and language. Themes that emerged from the content analysis of field notes and interviews. The essay concludes that resistance can be understood as acted on stages through social interaction which creates relational meaning to work, colleagues and clients. And is dependent on power distribution, which affects language, body and space.

Full textThe purpose of this essay is to examine how social workers, working with abuse and addiction, look at their, as well as others, responding and treatment to clients with this sort of problems. We wonder what their own experiences of meetings with this particular client has given them and which components that need to take place in order to make this meeting a good one. The purpose is also to examine the social workers experiences and thoughts on the perceptions of client’s with abuse or addiction problems. We have chosen to use a qualitative approach to reach our results and utilize interviews as a tool for this approach. Symbolic interactions and labeling theory are the two main theories used for analyzing the results. We have come to the conclusion that all of our informants for this essay see the meeting between themselves and their clients as the most important aspect to be able to make a different for the client and to build a relationship. We have furthermore realized that it exists as many different opinions as there are people, and in this case social workers. All of the informants does discusses imperative components to create a good meeting and do overall agree that ignorance of such can be fatal for the client and the relationship that are to be build. When asking about perception and prejudice the results poles apart between the informants. Again we can see that the difference is in personal experiences and moral, and perhaps in age and work experience.
