Abstract:
This chapter presents dynamic and steady-state modeling of permanent magnet synchronous (PMS) machines with the help of reference frames. The modeling starts with a machine model in terms of phase variables. An equivalent two-axis model in a stationary reference is then obtained by a reference frame transformation. A further transformation to a two-axis rotor reference frame, with its direct axis aligned with the axis of a permanent magnet rotor pole, is derived. Another transformation to a two-axis stator flux linkage reference frame is also presented. Finally, a motor model in polar coordinates, based on space vector theory, is developed. In this chapter, PMS motor equivalent circuits are drawn, based on the mathematical models where appropriate. Iron losses and iron saturation are also taken into the models. The chapter ends with a brief presentation of the dynamic equation of PMS machines mechanical parts.

Abstract:
Restricted to special relativity, this chapter observes that the most significant change in the concept of time is certainly the relativity of simultaneity. What events are simultaneous with some event for one observer are different from those that are simultaneous with respect to an object traveling in a different inertial frame. Many believe that this relativity can play a role in an argument for eternalism. This chapter critically surveys these arguments before taking on the implications of relativity for the metaphysics of time. It also tackles the conventionality of simultaneity. Many philosophers of science, especially during the early days of relativity, felt that simultaneity is not only relative but also conventional—there is a crucial element of choice in deciding what events are simultaneous for any other in a given inertial reference frame, so that there is no fact of the matter about what is simultaneous.

Abstract:
Tuzo Wilson introduces the concept of transform faults, which has the effect of transforming Earth Science forever. Resistance to the new ideas is finally overcome in the late 1960s, as the theory of moving plates is established. Two scientists play a major role in quantifying the embryonic theory that is eventually dubbed ‘plate tectonics’. Dan McKenzie applies Euler’s theorem, used previously by Teddy Bullard to reconstruct the continents around the Atlantic, to the problem of plate rotations on a sphere and uses it to unravel the entire history of the Indian Ocean. Jason Morgan also wraps plate tectonics around a sphere. Tuzo Wilson introduces the idea of a fixed hotspot beneath Hawaii, an idea taken up by Jason Morgan to create an absolute reference frame for plate motions.

Abstract:
This chapter recalls several relevant aspects of Newton’s theory of gravity, as well as Maxwell’s theory of electromagnetism, to describe the conceptual path that Albert Einstein followed in going from the theory of special relativity to general relativity. Looking at 1907 and beyond, the chapter shows that the ambition of Einstein was to construct a theory in which all reference frames (and therefore none) were privileged. Moreover, there were no longer any inertial forces, no ordering of Newton’s absolute space. Therefore, Einstein’s theory was one in which the laws of physics had the same form in all frames, inertial or not, so that no frame could be regarded as being privileged. In brief, he sought a theory of general relativity.

Horsnell, Linda. Attachment and Loss in the Works of James Joyce. Lexington Books, 2021. https://doi.org/10.5040/9781666985382.

Full text
Abstract:
Using John Bowlby's Attachment Theory as a frame of reference, Attachment and Loss in the Works of James Joyce critically analyzes James Joyce's representation of grief. Based on cognitive, emotional and behavioral elements, Attachment Theory allows for new and innovative readings to emerge which differ from those offered by Freudian, Lacanian, and Jungian paradigms. Acknowledging the importance of the Theory of Mind and Reader Response, this book uses the concept of internal working models to elucidate how the childhood experiences with which Joyce has endowed his protagonists ultimately leads to how they respond to loss. The texts of Dubliners, Portrait of the Artist and Ulysses, show how central separation and loss were to Joyce’s work. It provides examples of such experiences in different age groups, under differing circumstances and at different stages in the grief process. Attachment Theory highlights the complexity of human relationships throughout the life cycle, not only how they can affect the grief process but how grief affects them.

Huotari, Mikko, and Jürgen Rüland. Context, Concepts, and Comparison in Southeast Asian Studies. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190846374.003.0005.

Abstract:
This chapter argues that the value of comparative area studies (CAS) depends on some original frame of reference, here the field of Southeast Asian studies. We trace the evolution of this field in view of research on other world regions and general methodological debates. The chapter also highlights the role of CAS in overcoming increasingly rigid methodological divides over such core issues as context-sensitivity and the challenges of comparative research practice. We outline a methodologically pluralist framework of area studies comparisons. This requires methodological bridges between mainstream disciplines and area studies as well as innovative approaches to conceptual problems associated with comparing different regions and cultures. In the process, CAS can also increase attention to non-Western regions, which sometimes get short shrift in theory building in the social sciences. Thus, CAS is in a particularly strong position to mediate the ongoing internationalization and “de-Westernization” of global knowledge.

Sørensen, Georg, Jørgen Møller, and Robert Jackson. Introduction to International Relations: Theories and Approaches. 8th ed. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/hepl/9780198862208.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction to International Relations provides a concise introduction to the principal international relations theories and approaches, and explores how theory can be used to analyse contemporary issues. Throughout the text, the chapters encourage readers to consider the strengths and weaknesses of the theories presented, and the major points of contention between them. In so doing, the text helps the reader to build a clear understanding of how major theoretical debates link up with each other, and how the structure of the discipline of international relations is established. The book places a strong emphasis throughout on the relationship between theory and practice, carefully explaining how theories organize and shape our view of the world. It also shows how a historical perspective can often refine theories and provide a frame of reference for contemporary problems of international relations. Topics include realism, liberalism, International Society, International Political Economy, social constructivism, post-positivism in international relations, major issues in IPE and IR, foreign policy, and world order. Each chapter ends by discussing how different theories have attempted to integrate or combine international and domfactors in their explanatory frameworks. The final part of the book is dedicated to major global issues and how theory can be used as a tool to analyse and interpret these issues. The text is accompanied by online resources, which include: short case studies, review questions, annotated web links, and a flashcard glossary.

Abstract:
Interest in retributive theory, and emphasis on proportionality between crime and punishment as a requirement of justice, revived in English-speaking countries in the 1970s. After less than a half century, however, retributivism’s influence is waning. It is beset by challenges. Some, such as difficulties in scaling crime seriousness and punishment severity, and linking them, are primarily analytical and of interest mostly to theorists. Others, such as trade-offs between proportionality and crime prevention, relate to real-world applications. Both sets of challenges can be explored in their own terms, and solutions can be sought. The bigger question, though, is whether the challenges are epiphenomenal and portend displacement of retribution as the most intellectually influential normative frame of reference for thinking about punishment. Only time will tell whether retributivism is in terminal decline. Most likely, the difficulties contemporary philosophers face are as much a reflection of a change in the zeitgeist, in prevailing sensibilities, in mentalités as of sudden realization that retributive ideas offer less guidance for thinking about punishment than was widely understood.

Brock, Lothar, and Hendrik Simon, eds. The Justification of War and International Order. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198865308.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The history of war is also a history of its justification. The contributions to this book argue that the justification of war rarely happens as empty propaganda. While it is directed at mobilizing support and reducing resistance, it is not purely instrumental. Rather, the justification of force is part of an incessant struggle over what is to count as justifiable behaviour in a given historical constellation of power, interests, and norms. This way, the justification of specific wars interacts with international order as a normative frame of reference for dealing with conflict. The justification of war shapes this order and is being shaped by it. As the justification of specific wars entails a critique of war in general, the use of force in international relations has always been accompanied by political and scholarly discourses on its appropriateness. In much of the pertinent literature the dominating focus is on theoretical or conceptual debates as a mirror of how international normative orders evolve. In contrast, the focus of the present volume is on theory and political practice as sources for the re- and de-construction of the way in which the justification of war and international order interact. The book offers a unique collection of papers exploring the continuities and changes in war discourses as they respond to and shape normative orders from early modern times to the present. It comprises contributions from International Law, History and International Relations and from Western and non-Western perspectives.
