Jeffery, Susan Elizabeth. "Resistance, religion and identity in Ojitlan, Oaxaca, Mexico." Thesis, Durham University, 2001. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3960/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation analyses resistance to a regional development programme, which centred on the construction of a dam at Cerro de Oro, Ojitlan, Oaxaca, Mexico and the resettlement of the affected Chinantec population into an area of Uxpanapa, Veracruz. The resistance of the people of Ojitlan took various forms over a seven year period (1972-9), including political action, a syncretic millenarian movement, a reassertion of traditional forms of community fiestas and passive resistance to resettlement. Ojitlan has been affected by national economic and political changes since before the Spanish Conquest. Large plantations established in the tropical lowland areas in the 19th century ceded place to small "ejido" communities, set up under land reform in the 1930s. Control of land and the economic relationships of production are seen as factors affecting the patterns of resistance in Ojitlan. The dissertation reviews the anthropological literature on resistance and on ethnicity. The series of forms of resistance studied can be seen as multiple cultural articulations - attempts to "bridge the gap" between the established Ojitec life and the "modern" systems of work and life introduced by the development project of the Papaloapan River Commission. The Ojitec struggle with modernity involved dealing not just with the question of resettlement in the collective ejidos of Uxpanapa, but also with the reforms promoted in the Oaxacan Catholic Church. The traditional ritual of indigenous Catholicism offered a sphere of legitimate agency and autonomy for the Ojitec in the face of new models of agency and power. The dissertation suggests the usefulness of the concept of resistance, tempered with an analysis of accompanying processes of accommodation to change. Evidence from the 1990s indicates that ethnic identity continues to be important in political resistance to the state in Uxpanapa, a sign of the resilience of forms of Ojitec culture.

Paul, Vilmer. "Measuring Christian-voodoo syncretism in some Haitian Christian churches in the north of Haiti." Thesis, Nyack College, Alliance Theological Seminary, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10161698.

Full text
Abstract:

This study created a method for measuring the presence of Christian-voodoo syncretism in three Protestant denominations in the north of Haiti. Estimates of voodoo practice among Christians have ranged from 50% to 75%, a;though it is unclear how these percentages were derived. The researcher created a Voodoo-Protestant Scale (VPS), which tests for the presence of fourteen Christian-voodoo syncretistic practices and fifteen Christian-voodoo syncretistic beliefs. The VPS was written and administered in Creole, but the study contains an English translation. A scoring system for the VPS is also explained in Chapter Three, in which four points are counted for "strongly agree" and two points are counted for "agree" responses to syncretistic practice questions (PQs), and two points are counted for "strongly agree" responses and one point is counted for "agree" responses to syncretistic belief questions (BQs). Zero points were counted for "neutral," "disagree" or "strongly disagree." The VPS therefore had scores that ranged from zero to 88. The VPS allowed the researcher to make determinations about the extent of syncretism within the population (the percentage of the participants) as well as the depth of syncretism for each participant (the VPS score itself). The VPS was administered to 218 individuals who attended churches in the Church of God, Baptist, and Evangelical denominations in four urban areas (Milot, Plaine du Nord, Cap-Haitian Petite-Anse and Vaudreuil) and in three rural areas (Grand Bassin, La Jeune, and Maliarette). First, with respect to extent, the researcher discovered that 212 of 218 participants evidenced some syncretism of some kind (97%)—only 6 of 218 showed no trace of Christian-voodoo syncretism. Second, with respect to depth, the researcher discovered that 84 of 218 (39%) evidenced low syncretism (VPS scores from 1-14), 94 of 218 (43%) evidenced intermediate-level syncretism (VPS scores from 15–30), 25 of 218 (11%) evidenced high syncretism (VPS scores from 31–48), and 9 of 218 (4%) evidenced super-high levels (VPS scores from 50–88). Thus, these results offer a more nuanced picture of Christian-voodoo syncretism in Haiti. The study concludes with recommendations for church leaders.

Abstract:
Based on an ethnography conducted between 2013-2015 within a religious community in Brazil, this thesis investigates the meanings of a growing worldwide religious movement fusing beliefs and identity claims deriving from Judaism and Charismatic Evangelicalism. Unlike Messianic Judaism, where Jewish-born people identified as believers in Jesus remain faithful to their Jewish traditions while observing Charismatic Evangelical practices or Christian Zionism, Evangelicals who emphasise the theological and eschatological importance of Jews living in Israel, this thesis addresses a different dimension of this trend. Focusing particularly on women's conversion narratives, this study investigates the reasons why Charismatic Evangelical Brazilians are actively embracing a version of Judaism that requires them to follow the strict dress codes and purity laws of Orthodox Jews while believing in Jesus as the Messiah. My analysis concluded that the emergence of these communities should be understood as a revival aiming to restore some Charismatic Evangelical practices. Pointing to the moral permissiveness, materialism, individualism, and petitionary rhetoric enforced in their former Charismatic Evangelical churches-influenced by Neo-Pentecostal tenets-they embrace an austere religious style characterised by self- cultivation centred in Jewish ritual and ethos. This pious revival also involves recovering a collective past. References to a hidden Jewish heritage and a 'return' to Judaism are mobilised for justifying the community's strict adherence to Jewish practices. Drawing upon a socio-cultural and gender-sensitive analysis, this study examines the historical, religious and subjective reasons behind this emerging 'Judaising' trend in Charismatic Evangelicalism. This thesis also engages with the literature of religious conversion, morality, cultural change and debates examining hybridisation processes.

Abstract:
Urak Lawoi is the name of one of the sea nomadic tribes which lives along the shores of Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia. They are spread on many of the islands in the Andaman Sea archipelago and Ko Lanta is the main settlement. Urak Lawoi is regarded as the indigenous people of the island and they live there as a minority together with Muslims and Thai-Chinese.  The traditional religion and culture of Urak Lawoi is built upon the animistic belief of their ancestors. In the last 20 years Ko Lanta has experienced a tremendous process of change caused by increasing tourism. The conditions of the Urak Lawoi and their way of life have dramatically changed. The fact that this process brings consequences for the traditional culture and religion is obvious, but in what direction is it developing? To be able to interpret and expound the material from my field studies among Urak Lawoi on Ko Lanta in October-December 2009, I have done a literature search to investigate the animistic traditions and the syncretistic nature of belief in Thailand. I have also tried to find theories about the process of religious change and the forces working behind them. In this essay I am trying to do a theoretical analysis of the field study material using theories and parallel examples I have found in the literature.

Abstract:
Juan Rulfo and João Guimarães Rosa stand at a literary crossroads, the intersection where traditional regionalists and celebrated Boom-era novelists meet. Although Rulfo and Guimarães Rosa chose the Mexican Llano Grande and the Brazilian sertão of Minas Gerais as the settings of their most celebrated novels, they go far beyond the techniques of traditional regionalism by distancing themselves from their national literatures. They universalize their narratives by incorporating universal religious themes, including the symbol of the cross. The symbol of the cross/crossroad has been analyzed and alluded to in a handful of essays on Pedro Páramo and Grande sertão: Veredas but has never been applied comparatively or in depth, beyond a connection to Hermes, Greek god of the crossroads. Rulfo and Guimarães Rosa use the spatial organizing power of the cross-and by extension, the crossroad-to highlight the importance of racial and religious mixing to Mexican and Brazilian identity, determine narrative structure, and strengthen mythic, religious, and epic themes. The motif allows the reader to transcend (although not eradicate) a geographical conception of setting. Instead, the reader recognizes the construction of a mythic space that intertwines national history with primordial creation stories, modern heroes, and ancient religious symbols.

Abstract:
The Black Brotherhoods of Goiana were advocates of devotion and defenders of religious and african cultural traditions. This study considers them under three perspectives: as diverse forms of collective representations and expressions of the sacred; as a technique in societal control by catholic authorities; and, as syncretism while simultaneously being a mythical-symbolical strategy of resistance. In this historical reconstruction, the Black Brotherhoods reveal their sacred and black cultural reminiscences in their feasts, processions and funerals. The strong control exercised by both Church and State over the Brotherhoods forced the black man to create collective representations, ways to organize so that he could preserve his ethos. This happened at the same time when it was possible for him to affirm his identity in a social and cultural space as resistance. In this perspective, syncretism, as lived in the Black Brotherhoods, was a significant force in maintaining african traditions

Abstract:
Starting from an anthropological perspective, this thesis deals with the relationship between football and religion in Brazil. In particular, it aims to understand a practice adopted by Brazilian footballers, which is called ‘fechamento’. This term refers to the set of verbal and bodily expressions that footballers systematically display before competitions, which differs from similar practices used for the collective recitation of the Lord’s Prayer. From a symbolic point of view, hermeneutics of ‘fechamento’ allows us to acquire an understanding that transcends the object per se, thus revealing a particular world view (Geertz, 1989). Starting from an ethnography carried out with the players of the youth team of Sport Club Internacional de Porto Alegre, Brazil and integrated with the experience gained by the researcher during his long stay in Brazil, this thesis aims to reveal the deep meaning of this polymorphic practice which, because of its intrinsic features, appears to be a ‘religious bricolage’, made up of ‘pieces’ of various elements of different beliefs, thus forming a ‘mosaic’ (Bastide, 1953-1970), for which the Catholic-Christian root represents the backdrop Starting from this perspective, it becomes possible to relativise the impact of Neo- Pentecostalism on Brazilian football (Rial, 2012; 2013), by taking into consideration its “religiophagous” (Oro, 2015) or “anthropophagous” (Almeida, 2003) feature, i.e. the tendency to incorporate, redefine and re-symbolise elements of beliefs taken from other religions. The case of ‘fechamento’, among Brazilian footballers, seems to be emblematic of this process which, instead of revealing its Neo-Pentecostal ‘face’, strengthens even more the already high degree of ‘religious bricolage’. Therefore ‘fechamento’ as a ‘syncretic’ product would no longer be based on one religion (Neo-Pentecostalism) but on all. This would explain its success regardless of the religious orientation of players.

Grosjean, Sophie. Thesis, Paris 4, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009PA040182.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to study Demeter and Persephone’s singularity at Cyrene. Throught the personnality of the two deities and the rites performed in their honour, we explain how they worship and how original they were. The rapid expansion of their worship in Cyrene and the popular appeal that it raised were due to a prior chtonic goddess of fertility whose personality was strong enough not to be literally swallowed up by the Greek goddess of the colonizers. The Libyan Demeter hides under the mask of a canonical deity, a fantastic green power rooten in the soil and connected to the world of the dead. This is not a simple analogy between two existing cults and cannot occur without a movement of deep faith. The changes undergone by the goddesses of Cyrene existed potentially in the imported deities by the first Cyrenians. But barbaric rituals were introduced to enable them to flourishin Libyan territory. This phenomenon doesn’t merge into a confusion between the characteristics of the Libyan deities and the Greek gods, but rather deities living together and allowing goddesses being richer as they mingle together. Finaly, the contact between the two civilisations did not upset the Greeks and the natives : the Cyrenian Demeter, just like the Libyan deities of fertility, remained totally original even when the syncretism phenomenal took place

We treat this thesis the relationship between the Brazilian recognized as the sacred feminine, from this central theme touched on cross-cutting issues such as syncretism, gender, religious experience, interfaith dialogue, Ethos, and to discuss the viability of a science of religion, there thinking its epistemology and its methods of inquiry. The complexity of the proposal led to a structure that divided the text into two parts: first there are the more theoretical discussions, the epistemological and methodological field, try to anchor there in the thoughts of the Phenomenology of Analytical Psychology of Jung, in Psychology James and pragmatic structuralism, seeking some concepts serving as benchmarks to think the religious experience of Brazil with this sacred feminine. In the methodological field try to present an open dynamic, involving a number of different research as participatory research, ethnography and data collection for quantitative analysis. In the second part of the work dedicated to the analysis of the experiences observed in the field, looking to make the link with the concepts proposed in the first part, then to be able to build an understanding of the importance of the sacred feminine in the constitution of the Ethos of our people. The expression of the sacred feminine is more than a whim; presents itself as a force of resistance and as a need for people who are in this expression an identity and a sense of possibility for their religiosity.

Abstract:
This thesis looks at the life and works of Daphne du Maurier in the context of the inter-related ideas of religion, psychology and politics. Throughout, I use a methodology based on the concept of the palimpsest. But I also use theory provided by Jung, Plato and Nietzsche – all of which were known to du Maurier to a greater or lesser degree. Other theory is used occasionally, but only as it suggests itself in the context under consideration. The ideas of ‘Resurrection, Renaissance and Rebirth' give the thesis a structure and a theme. The interaction of Christianity and Paganism is also examined. Section One, ‘Introduction – Resurrecting Texts/Lives', introduces the idea of the palimpsest. In reality, this is a twice-written document frequently containing a Christian text which is written over a Pagan one, with the Pagan text resurrecting itself over time. In theory, the palimpsest is a textual space where disparate texts collide and collude in an involuted manner. Section Two, ‘Life and Text – Renaissance Inspired Men', looks at two men who drew their inspiration from the Renaissance as either age or idea - the socialist Victor Gollancz and the conservative Frank Buchman - and to what degree du Maurier interacted with both the people and their conceptual framework. Section Three, ‘Life into Text – Renaissance Men', concerns itself with du Maurier's biographies of two Renaissance brothers, Anthony and Francis Bacon, and how their lives have been read, gnostically, by herself and others, notably The Francis Bacon Society and Nietzsche. Section Four, ‘Spectralised Lives in Text - Rebirthing', examines how the foregoing discussion plays itself out in two of du Maurier's novels, Jamaica Inn (1936) and The Flight of the Falcon (1965). The chapter on Jamaica Inn looks at Celtic Revivalism and how the Celtic gods spectralise the characters of the novel leading to a rebirthing experience for the protagonist Mary Yellan – implicit in this is the concept of the Renaissance-as-idea. The chapter on The Flight of the Falcon shows how the Renaissance-as-age daimonises characters of the twentieth-century. The palimpsest as either a document or a theoretical perspective weaves itself in and out of all my chapters. Section Five, ‘Concluding Remarks', leads to two related conclusions, firstly that du Maurier has been spectralised by the Renaissance, and secondly that du Maurier's life and works, taken together, can be read as an involuted palimpsest.

Kiehlbauch, Solange Nicole. ""The Gods Have Taken Thought for Them": Syncretic Animal Symbolism in Medieval European Magic." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2018. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/1923.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates syncretic animal symbolism within medieval European occult systems. The major question that this work seeks to answer is: what does the ubiquity and importance of magical animals and animal magic reveal about overarching medieval perceptions of the world? In response, I utilize the emerging subfield of Animal History as a theoretical framework to draw attention to an understudied yet highly relevant aspect of occult theory and practice. This work argues that medieval Europeans lived in a fundamentally “enchanted” world compared to our modern age, where the permeable boundaries between physical and spiritual planes imbued nature and its creatures with intrinsic power. In addition, with the increasingly pervasive influence of Christianity, animals took on supplementary and often negative symbolic dimensions within evolving magical systems, yet retained their sense of power within a new syncretic context. By surveying classical occult inheritance, the pervasive influence of Christian doctrine, the use of animals in medical magic, and their rich symbolic potential within medieval literature, this interdisciplinary work highlights the multifaceted medley of Christian and pagan elements that became intertwined in daily life despite seeming doctrinal opposition. Although further scholarly research has yet to be done, analyzing understandings of a world filled with intrinsic occult power offers a valuable and revealing contrast to an age of increasingly sharpened boundaries between animals, human beings, the cosmic realm, and nature.

In this production, it will be to investigated the religious syncretism as a factor to recover the afro-descendant ethnic and religious identity. It will be started from the hypothesis that Pai João de Abuque s courtyard is a space in which afro-descendant identity can be recovered and that the syncretism is a contributor factor to this. The place where fetichism is practised ( courtyard ) is a construction and reconstruction space of this way. Syncretism, as it will be seen, is a characteristic of every any religion.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the cult and mythos of the goddess Kali both in her Eastern and Western contexts, comparing and contrasting them in order to gain a better understanding of the Western appropriations of Kali within feminist goddess spirituality. Utilizing a variety of methods, including ethnographic research conducted at Kali temples in California, this research is aimed at providing an entry into the lived contemporary tradition of the Western Kali within goddess spirituality circles, focusing on embodied experience, devotion, ritual, and syncretic practices. Kali, a fierce Indian goddess, is often seen in the Hindu context as a central manifestation of the all encompassing Mother Goddess (Mahadevi, Devi, Shakti, etc), and therefore is a particularly engaging example of contemporary Western appropriation of religious and cultural symbols and narratives. This thesis contributes to understanding Kali in her new North American domain, as well as serving as a case study of the shifting religious landscape in the West.

Therefore, we reassemble the formation of Brazilian Catholicism that makes up part of the national culture through historical research. To contextualize the historical component resort to authors who reflect on the formation of Catholicism and, consequently, the Church in Brazil, because to understand the sculptures had to first understand the historical process where they were built. After the historical reconstruction, we analyze the elements, cultural - symbolic, which summarized the socio-cultural and devotional extracts resplendent in pieces, trying to thus demonstrate the importance of this heritage, which make up part of Brazilian cultural identity.

One of the major characteristics of the brazilian religious matrix is religious sincretism. This is a result of the process of conflict and interaction of indigenous, European and African cultural currents. Afro-catholic syncretism, lived by thousands of brasilians, is one of the more valuable and complex variations of this process, “Afro-catholic syncretism: between Oxun and Our Lady of Carmo”, the subject of this dissertation, focuses its research on the city of Goiana, Pernambuco. Beginning with the contribution of afro-catholic syncretism based on the theory of archetypes of C. G. Jung as presented by Pedro Iwashita, this study seeks to understand the sincretic experience of the some of the devotees of the orixá Oxun and Our Lady of Carmo. The results of this dissertation contribute to the comprehension, in an interdisciplinary manner, of the phenomena of afro-catholic syncretism.

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to investigate syncretism in burial mounds that were active burial places during the Iron Age and the change of religion from pre-christianity to christianity in Mälardalen. The study consists of a comparative analysis of two burial mounds that was recycled and has two different burials pracites on its primary and secondary graves. The essay is a literature study and based on fieldwork reports from excavations of the two burial mounds and the burial fields Spånga RAÄ 193 and Valsta RAÄ 59. Tombs can have been a visible power symbol in the landscape during the Iron Age. A physical link between the dead and the living, between people and the ownership of the earth and the odal concept. The grave ship during the Iron Age had a great variety. Concepts like syncretism can be difficult interpreted because it was used as a concept in religious history from the beginning. It deals with the process of diffrents religions meet and the consequences of that meeting.

Abstract:
This thesis develops the concept of religious butinage in order to understand what form of religious mobility and pluralization occur in Brazil, especially in the mediumistic field, since so far the explanations for syncretism do not satisfactorily explain as it occurs. By examining how religious practitioners practice throughout history and culture I identify some kind of experience that escapes the established structure, tradition and culture. It clarifies the syncretic processes. Data have been collected from participant observation, interviews, newspapers, and biographies. I build up the concept of religious butinage by a metaphor from ayahuasca religions. The religious practitioner compared with a hummingbird makes butinage from a religious denomination to another producing syncretism. This doctoral thesis is in some way a continuation of my master's thesis entitled: “Between the rose and the hummingbird: An anthropological study of trajectories in the União do Vegetal (UDV) and the Santo Daime”.

Abstract:
In spite of a lively debate during the last century, there is still no scholarly consensus about the identity of the opponents in Colossians. The aim of this essay is not to put forward yet another attempt to solve this complex historical problem, but rather to examine how boundaries are drawn between the author and the opponents in Colossians and how similar boundaries are maintained, developed or even created in scholarly historiography. In what Jonathan Z. Smith refers to as the “Protestant Historiographic Myth”, nineteenth and early twentieth century scholars of biblical studies often understood early Christian developments in terms of an original purity that was lost at a later stage. According to this historiographic construction, the essence of Christianity was distorted through interaction with the cultural and religious environment of the Roman Empire and through the incorporation of pagan elements. Throughout this essay, I argue that this essentialist conception of early Christianity has shaped the construction of the opponents of Colossians in scholarly literature. In studies of Colossians, many modern scholars have, problematically, recreated the dichotomy between an original apostolic Christianity and later Hellenized deviations. This legacy of the “Protestant Historiographic myth” is mainly expressed in two ways, either as an opposition between the author’s pure apostolic Christianity and the opponents, who are understood as a syncretistic group, composed of a mixture of various Hellenistic elements, or as a dichotomy between Christianity, as represented by the author, and “religion”, as represented by the opponents.

Abstract:
Between 1847 and 1874 approximately 142,000 Chinese indentured laborers, commonly known as coolies, migrated to Cuba to work primarily on sugar plantations following the demise of African slavery. Comprised of 99.97% males and contracted to work for eight years or more, many of those coolies that survived the harsh conditions in Cuba formed consensual unions with freed and enslaved women of color. These intimate connections between Chinese indentures and Cubans of African descent developed not only because they shared the same living and working spaces, but also because they occupied similar sociocultural, political, and economic spheres in colonial society. This ethnography investigates the rise of a discernible Afro-Chinese religiosity that emerged from the coming together of these two diasporic groups. The Lukumi religion, often described as being a syncretism between African and European elements, contains impressive articulations of Chinese and Afro-Chinese influences, particularly in the realm of material culture. On the basis of qualitative research that I conducted among Chinese and Afro-Chinese Lukumi practitioners in Cuba, this dissertation documents the development of syncretism and discursive religious practice between African and Chinese diasporas. I conceptualize a framework of interdiasporic cross-fertilization and, in so doing, disassemble Cuba’s racial and religious categories, which support a notion of “Cubanidad” that renders Chinese subjectivity invisible. I argue that Afro-Chinese religiosity became a space for a positive association that I call “Sinalidad”. I also argue that this religiosity has been elaborated upon largely because of transformations in Cuba’s social and economic landscape that began during Cuba’s Special Period. Thus, the dissertation uses religious practice as a lens through which I shed light upon another dimension of identity making, transnationalism and the political economy of tourism on the island.

This study proposes to reveal the candomblé angola circumscribed in the city of São Paulo, trying to comprehend the moment in which the search for affirmation of it´s identity couples up to the search of it´s African origins. This posture, manifested by some (pais de santo), promotes the dialogue as well as the confrontation among adepts of the Angola nation, pointing to the irreconcilable forces of tradition and translation . In this clash are revealed not only the hybridization process, in which sincretisms are recognised, but also what is no allowed to merge. This way, the oral stories collected from pais and mãe de santo, the observation of parties, the examination of old photographies and informal talks with the adepts, unveiled the questionings, anxieties and resistances that hold at the moment in the São Paulo Angola nation. The search for the imagined Africa can take many paths. But it may not produce africanisms, attest religious orthodoxies or separate nations into fixed frontiers. Besides this, to considerate that angola nation forms a religious continuum with the African Bantu traditional religions will end up dividing nations into pure and mixed , desconsidering constant transformations in ritual practices. In São Paulo, the Afro-Brazilian religious identity, has a cultural origin. The Africa that lives in the angola nation is one marked by diasporization and transformed in the New World. It is this imagined Africa produced by candomble´s narrative that may offer resources for the angola nation today. Even though, as only elements of culture with roots remain and flourish, we can not forget that the original elements were transformed by the process of cultural translation

Created in 1945 in Rio Branco (AC) by Daniel Pereira de Mattos (1888-1958), the Barquinha is a highly complex and little studied religious movement that is influenced by black, white and amerindian religious matrices. Through the drinking of the Daime (ayahuasca), rituals of mediumistic trance, intense Christian devotion, altruistic ideals, and an ample marine and esoteric imagery, this ayahuasca line flourished in several ramifications after the death of its founder and, although discreet, has been gaining adherents of diverse brazilian localities and social contexts. The main objective of this work was to identify and present the history; the main religious influences and the fundamental rituals of the Barquinha line. In addition, the dissertation sought to point out and expand the main concepts used by the researchers of this religious movement, in order to foster some reflections previously presented by them. For this, a systematic bibliographical survey was carried out on the Barquinha literature, which contents had been analyzed and organized in four chapters, in the light of the concepts like symbolic anthropology, from Clifford Geertz, and cultural hybridism, from Peter Burke. In addition to updating the literature on the timeline of this religious movement and identifying its main rituals and religious influences, it was possible to recognize that most of the authors who study Barquinha use the concepts of syncretism and eclecticism to define this religious movement. It was possible to note that most of the authors emphasize the use of ayahuasca in their reviews, not reliably highlighting the influence of esotericism on the symbolic constitution of this religious movement. Finally, through the concept of cultural hybridization, it was possible to broaden the understanding of the constituent processes of this religious movement

Abstract:
Once upon a time there was an oasis kingdom called Kroraina. It was situated in what is today the Xinjiang-region in China. In 1901 approximately one thousand Kharosthi documents was discovered under the sand in the ruins of the ancient lost city of Niya, Kroraina. The documents and artefacts reveal the everyday life of inhabitants and religious syncretism, in about the 3rd and 4th centuries C.E. Niya was abandoned shortly after it peaked, and much of its history is still a mystery, likewise the story of its women. The aim of this thesis is to examine the status of women in Niya, both in local society and in religions. To achieve this, I use a theory of social constructionism and a method of content analysis with a gender perspective. In the study of Kharosthi documents and graves of female mummies I discovered a connection. The result shows that the former high status of women in religion and society was decreasing, and a lower status of woman was at the time for Buddhist establishing in Niya. The time of witches was gone. The time of monks was coming. But different kinds of male-dominant religions in this syncretistic landscape contributed to this decline for women. It doesn´t matter if she is a witch, a female slave or even a queen. Womens position in Niya was a mix; high and low at the same time, and sometimes almost invisible.

Abstract:
Such research aims to study the Feast Laundering dedicated to orisha Oxalá held at wide of Rosário, Penedo, Alagoas. The ritual takes place for about thirteen years, and was inspired by the traditional washing of Lord of Bonfim in Salvador, through the redefinition symbolic elements. During its realization are washed the churchyard of the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary of Black and Alley of Laziness, spaces that represent the opposition between the sacred and the profane, which are taken by the festivities of the street carnival after washing. The ritual presents itself as a festival of purification, being the greatest expressions of religious syncretism in the city, and develops through an action that relates Catholicism and Candomblé honoring Oxalá, the orisha of creation, but also have a reference to African mythology. The goal is to develop a discussion about the meaning of the ritual washing of the Rosary from the ethnographic work, analyze the involvement of the participants and their performances, ritual symbols, its organizational and historical context, as a ritual that combines faith and celebration and that develops over time and space festive carnival.

Abstract:
Based on an intensive field work related to ombwiri rituals performed in two provinces of Gabon, this dissertation discusses the relevance of common theorisation of African contemporary religions as expressions of syncretism. The author considers that syncretism cannot be applied unilaterally to African rituals, as it might only emphasize the diachronic level in cultural and linguistic borrowing, without outlying the synchronic one which makes the borrowing even possible. More consequently, syncretist theorisation neglects fundamental aspects of ritual creativity and specific empowerment to integrate what it likes or not, including outdoor elements resulting from historical and particularly cross-cultural conjunctions. Therefore, the author suggests to start up with a new conceptual framework of “interreligious correspondences”, so as to prevent scientific productions from colonial recurrent ideologies, and give evidence of cognitive mechanisms which habilitate African minds as others, to go on integrating new with old, extraordinary with ordinary, and all kinds of resources, in a permanent creative dynamism including the indefinite limit that one likes to give to oneself

Abstract:
The central objective of this dissertation was to show how messianic jews from Beit Sar Shalom synagogue see themselves and how they are seen by the groups outside their ethnicity frontiers, in the present case, how they are seen by Jew leadership secular and religious from São Paulo city. Messianic Judaism is a religion that mixes elements of Christianity, because they believe that the messiah sent by God is Jesus and Judaism because maintaining part of the rituals, festivities and traditions. The results of this analyze should be seen as indicators that the religion was concluded as a kind of paradigmatic syncretic one, in which elements of Christianity and Judaism are carefully selected and applied to the doctrinaire body. The study was developed having as starting point the ethnography of the Beit Sar Shalom, messianic synagogue, located in São Paulo in the borough Higienópolis. Ritualistic aspects of this religion were analyzed as were identity aspects such as initiation and passage rituals, comparing them with traditional jewish rites.

This thesis is a study regarding the problem of religious syncretism, when it is considered in the dialogue between anthropology and theology. For this purpose, the study employs a hermeneutical exercise of conceptual resignification, based upon various theories about syncretism and their anthropological and theological uses, seeking support in the thought of Michel de Certeau and Paul Tillich for that resignification. Thus, the perspective of Certeau regarding a heterological reflection of culture and the notion of demonic in theology and philosophy of meaning of Tillich provide the basis for the perception of syncretism as a theory of mediation between religion and culture. This means that syncretism operates in a dialectical relation with its named pole, in this thesis, of diacretism , considering the cultural and religious dynamic as an inventive space, a position that manifests ambiguous aspects of the creation of positive meanings (experience of syncretistic approximation) and the creation of distorted meanings (experience of diacretistic fragmentation), the essence of the relation with the sacred, lived culturally. The culture, understood as space for the living of the religious, expresses itself in a profound relation between tactics and strategies, denoting the ambiguity previously affirmed, when it recognizes that the social actors in interaction, even when marked by proper places strategically established, as places of power, do not inhibit the formation of tactical actions that inventively subvert these same places, offering the rightful cultural dynamic. The thesis analyses, also, as a case study, the implications of this comprehension of syncretism for the interpretation of the religious experience of the Guarani and Kaiowá native indigenous groups, on the indigenous land of Dourados, MS, on the frontier between tradition and translation performed by the indigenous people, based on the Presbyterian Indigenous Church Project (IIP), resignifying its alternative religiosity in the interface with the multiple Christianities present in the villages, affirming the possibility of a religious teko retã ( a way of being that is plural, multiple ), based on the syncretistic and diacretistic relations that are proposed.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the popular theatre of the late-nineteenth century and focuses on the most commercially successful and popular playwrights of the era: Henry Arthur Jones, Arthur Wing Pinero, and Oscar Wilde. Looking at the major popular playwrights reveals that the commercial stage had different concerns than the avant-garde theatre of Ibsen and Shaw. Foremost among these concerns was religion, and starting with Jones’s 1884 play Saints and Sinners, a massive change swept through the commercial stage as religious prejudice and official censorship fell by the wayside. In its place, religion started to become a topic that was once again seen as acceptable, and the fin de siècle stage was awash with syncretic religious views. This syncretism was aided by the publication of scripts and the religious pluralism of the day. Though publication aided the literary and religious quality of the texts, they were crafted as staged works, complete with the shared, collective experiences and emotions of the audience, a collective affect that mimics the collective emotional experience of a congregation in a church, and the stage thus became one of the largest venues for ecumenical religion during the late-Victorian era. The alacrity with which this happened challenges not only the common conception of the secularization of the late-Victorian stage, but also of the larger culture
