Moore, Lauren. "Syncretism in the cult of the Syrian goddess." Thesis, University of Kent, 2017. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/62919/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, I have undertaken to analyse the effect upon the cult of the Syrian goddess of the process of religious syncretism, which occurred through contact between the Aramaic speaking people of the city sacred to the goddess: Hierapolis/ Mnbg, and the peoples of the Hellenistic kingdoms and the Roman Empire. The purpose of my analysis is to examine the extent to which the syncretic developments observed in the cult of the Syrian goddess can be viewed as systematic and whether looking specifically at syncretism in a religion is useful in gaining insights into that religion, where a non-specific approach would not. From previous studies of syncretism in the fields of theology and anthropology, I have established a workable definition of the term religious syncretism and I have combined aspects of structural and cognitive approaches to syncretism. I have focussed on the types of syncretism called association and identification as this yielded the most significant results.

Kaspar, J. "Syncretism : a case study of the particle že in Czech." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2017. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1557346/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a case study of že in Czech. The particle can appear in a number of seemingly unrelated constructions: it can be used in declaratives, interrogatives and exclamatives of various types. Below, three of its uses are considered in detail: subordinating conjunction, question tag, discourse particle. When used as a subordination conjunction or a question tag, že might lexicalise one of the following functional heads: C or I. In both cases, že functions as a semantically vacuous linker, the purpose of which is to mark a relation between a head of one extended projection and some dependent extended projection. As a subordinating conjunction, it links a matrix clause to an embedded clause. As a question tag, it links a matrix clause to a minimal answer. When used as a discourse particle, že might appear in C or SpecCP. In both cases, že functions as a a semantically contenful linker, the purpose of which is to mark a relation between its containing utterance and some other utterance that is part of the previous discourse. In the process of establishing the above, I outline a number of properties of the constructions in which že appears, and I also make a number of general theoretical claims. First, I argue that contrastive topics in Czech appear in a dedicated syntactic position. Second, I propose a new definition of the category contrastive topic. Third, I demonstrate that embedded clauses involving contrastive left dislocation encode an assertoric speech act. Fourth, I argue that question tags comprising že are embedded minimal answers to questions expressed by the clauses to which they are attached. Fifth, I claim that a mechanism akin to feature percolation must exist as a theoretical primitive. Sixth, I show experimentally that discourse is more granular than usually assumed in the realm of information structure.

Ram, Deepak. "A portfolio of original compositions exploring syncretism between Indian and western music." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002320.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation, overviews and detailed examinations of three compositions are presented. These compositions which constitute the portfolio of the M.MUS degree, are an attempt to explore syncretism between Indian and western music. Two of these works are written for a flute quartet (flute, violin, viola and cello) accompanied in part by a mridangam (Indian percussion instrument). The third work is written for a jazz quartet (piano, saxophone, double bass and drums). Syncretism between western and Indian music can take on a variety of forms, and while this concept is not new, there exists no suitable model or framework through which these compositions can be analysed. The approach used In this dissertation IS therefore guided solely by the compositions themselves. The syncretism in these works lies in the use of melodic, rhythmic and timbral elements of Indian music within two ensembles which are essentially western. This dissertation describes each of these elements in their traditional context as well as the method of incorporating them into western ensemble playing.

Abstract:
This thesis develops the concept of religious butinage in order to understand what form of religious mobility and pluralization occur in Brazil, especially in the mediumistic field, since so far the explanations for syncretism do not satisfactorily explain as it occurs. By examining how religious practitioners practice throughout history and culture I identify some kind of experience that escapes the established structure, tradition and culture. It clarifies the syncretic processes. Data have been collected from participant observation, interviews, newspapers, and biographies. I build up the concept of religious butinage by a metaphor from ayahuasca religions. The religious practitioner compared with a hummingbird makes butinage from a religious denomination to another producing syncretism. This doctoral thesis is in some way a continuation of my master's thesis entitled: “Between the rose and the hummingbird: An anthropological study of trajectories in the União do Vegetal (UDV) and the Santo Daime”.

Paul, Vilmer. "Measuring Christian-voodoo syncretism in some Haitian Christian churches in the north of Haiti." Thesis, Nyack College, Alliance Theological Seminary, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10161698.

Full text
Abstract:

This study created a method for measuring the presence of Christian-voodoo syncretism in three Protestant denominations in the north of Haiti. Estimates of voodoo practice among Christians have ranged from 50% to 75%, a;though it is unclear how these percentages were derived. The researcher created a Voodoo-Protestant Scale (VPS), which tests for the presence of fourteen Christian-voodoo syncretistic practices and fifteen Christian-voodoo syncretistic beliefs. The VPS was written and administered in Creole, but the study contains an English translation. A scoring system for the VPS is also explained in Chapter Three, in which four points are counted for "strongly agree" and two points are counted for "agree" responses to syncretistic practice questions (PQs), and two points are counted for "strongly agree" responses and one point is counted for "agree" responses to syncretistic belief questions (BQs). Zero points were counted for "neutral," "disagree" or "strongly disagree." The VPS therefore had scores that ranged from zero to 88. The VPS allowed the researcher to make determinations about the extent of syncretism within the population (the percentage of the participants) as well as the depth of syncretism for each participant (the VPS score itself). The VPS was administered to 218 individuals who attended churches in the Church of God, Baptist, and Evangelical denominations in four urban areas (Milot, Plaine du Nord, Cap-Haitian Petite-Anse and Vaudreuil) and in three rural areas (Grand Bassin, La Jeune, and Maliarette). First, with respect to extent, the researcher discovered that 212 of 218 participants evidenced some syncretism of some kind (97%)—only 6 of 218 showed no trace of Christian-voodoo syncretism. Second, with respect to depth, the researcher discovered that 84 of 218 (39%) evidenced low syncretism (VPS scores from 1-14), 94 of 218 (43%) evidenced intermediate-level syncretism (VPS scores from 15–30), 25 of 218 (11%) evidenced high syncretism (VPS scores from 31–48), and 9 of 218 (4%) evidenced super-high levels (VPS scores from 50–88). Thus, these results offer a more nuanced picture of Christian-voodoo syncretism in Haiti. The study concludes with recommendations for church leaders.

Shinn, Beth Alison. "Christian mission in the early Middle Ages : an examination of mission, baptism, conversion, and saints' lives from the perspective of missiology." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/17581.

Full text
Abstract:
The underlying question explored by this thesis is whether missiology, applied as a lens to examine Christian mission in the early middle ages, can reveal new insights from historical sources. This approach has raised new questions and has revealed new tensions such as that between the group and individual, that between top-down and bottom-up mission, and that between syncretism and contextualization. One of the key insights is the need to hold the group and individual in tension, that is· not to choose to interpret sources as either group or individual oriented but as moving between the two. Taking one's identity from a group did not negate the individual, it only meant that the individual submitted to group decisions. This tension, it is argued, needs to be highlighted and held in balance in order to understand how groups and individuals in the early middle ages reacted to, and interacted with, the Christian gospel message. To make this case mission, baptism and conversion, as foundational to Christian mission, are examined. An examination of a selection of the writings of the Church Fathers, Saints' Vitae, Church councils and synods, and other correspondence of the early middle ages in light of syncretism and contextualization has raised questions about definition and content. With Rome and Constantinople setting the standard of content and practice, often anything that looked different was labelled as heretical, barbaric or pagan and this has usually been defined as syncretism. However, if the central core content of the Christian gospel message was not compromised, what was happening could be contextualization (that is, the working out of the Christian gospel message in an appropriate cultural manner). Although these are contemporary labels, early medieval sources do reveal an underlying concern about the loss of correct belief and practices. The common interpretation of missional work as a top-down movement often fails to take into account the evidence for the bottom-up, or organic, spread of the Christian gospel message. This is not to say that the official accounts should be set aside, but rather these need to be balanced with the evidence for bottom-up growth. To put some of these insights into an appropriate context, the Vitae of Boniface, Anskar, and Cyril and Methodius are examined as case studies. Each of these men represents different cultural starting points, different geographical areas, and different emphases in mission work. However, in each of these Vitae the tensions between the group and the individual, a top-down or bottom-up approach to mission, and syncretism versus contextualization can be examined, especially in light of the issues of baptism and conversion. The conclusion is that missiology has much to offer early medieval studies. It is a field of study that is broadly interdisciplinary in its approach which gives it an elasticity which allows it to illuminate this period of history valuably. On the basis of this thesis, the discipline of missiology deserves to be applied much more frequently to the study of early medieval history.

HUANG, CHI-CHIANG. "EXPERIMENT IN SYNCRETISM: CH'I-SUNG (1007-1072) AND ELEVENTH-CENTURY CHINESE BUDDHISM (NORTHERN SUNG, CH'AN)." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/183819.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a study of the Northern Sung monk, Ch'i-sung (1007-1072), the type of Ch'an Buddhism that he practiced, and the form of syncretism for which he stood. Through an in-depth examination of Ch'i-sung's life and thoughts, this study attempts to uncover some neglected facts of Confucian-Buddhist interaction and discuss the nature of syncretism in eleventh-century China as represented by Ch'i-sung. It also attempts to bridge the gap that recent studies leave between later T'ang and Southern Sung and broaden our understanding of Buddhism from a historical perspective. This study consists of two major parts. The first attempts to discuss the character and significance of Ch'an Buddhism in the intellectual life of eleventh-century Sung society. It also evaluates Ch'i-sung who, as a syncretist of the three teachings, took a leading role in the world of Yun-men Ch'an Buddhism. It, too, provides a history of Ch'an Buddhism--its rise to prominence in the T'ang Dynasty and its continuance as a major school of Sung Buddhism. Attention is focused on the relatively favorable intellectual milieu of the early Sung that allowed Ch'an Buddhism to grow and receive imperial patronage so quickly. The second part discusses Ch'i-sung's life and writings, focusing on his ambitious plan to seek official patronage and imperial support as a way of institutionalizing Ch'an Buddhism. Emphasis is placed on the ways in which he took up the work of reconfirming patriarch lineage and establishing orthodox status for Ch'an Buddhism. This part of the study also examines his argument about the twenty-eight western and five eastern Ch'an patriarchs, his interpretations of "special transmission outside scripture" and "no dependence on words and letters," as well as his advocacy of the "Platform Sutra School." Finally, this section discusses his syncretic views of the three teachings, his use of the three teachings as an integral system to interpret Confucianism and defend Buddhism, and his accomplishment in formulating and theorizing Buddhist-Confucian syncretism.

Blackhurst, Faith Arianna. "The Mediation of the Cross: Spatiality and Syncretism in Pedro Páramo and Grande sertão: Veredas." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2019. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/7491.

Full text
Abstract:
Juan Rulfo and João Guimarães Rosa stand at a literary crossroads, the intersection where traditional regionalists and celebrated Boom-era novelists meet. Although Rulfo and Guimarães Rosa chose the Mexican Llano Grande and the Brazilian sertão of Minas Gerais as the settings of their most celebrated novels, they go far beyond the techniques of traditional regionalism by distancing themselves from their national literatures. They universalize their narratives by incorporating universal religious themes, including the symbol of the cross. The symbol of the cross/crossroad has been analyzed and alluded to in a handful of essays on Pedro Páramo and Grande sertão: Veredas but has never been applied comparatively or in depth, beyond a connection to Hermes, Greek god of the crossroads. Rulfo and Guimarães Rosa use the spatial organizing power of the cross-and by extension, the crossroad-to highlight the importance of racial and religious mixing to Mexican and Brazilian identity, determine narrative structure, and strengthen mythic, religious, and epic themes. The motif allows the reader to transcend (although not eradicate) a geographical conception of setting. Instead, the reader recognizes the construction of a mythic space that intertwines national history with primordial creation stories, modern heroes, and ancient religious symbols.

Abstract:
Art History
Ph.D.;
My dissertation studies the typological juxtaposition and syncretic incorporation of classical and Christian elements-subjects, motifs, and forms-in the art of the Italian Renaissance and the significant meaning of classical subjects and figures in such contexts. In this study, I analyze the interpretative modes applied to extra-Biblical and secular literature in the Italian Tre- and Quattrocento and the syncretic philosophies of the later Quattro- and early Cinquecento and reevaluate selected works of art from the Italian Renaissance in light of the period claims and beliefs that are evident from such a study. In summary, my dissertation considers the use of classical subjects, motifs, and forms in the art of the Italian Renaissance as a means to gloss or reveal aspects of Christian doctrine. In chapter 1, I respond to the paradigm proposed by Erwin Panofsky (Renaissance and Renascences) and establish a new criteria for understanding the difference between medieval and Renaissance perceptions of classical antiquity. Chapter 2 includes a study of the mythological scenes painted in the Cappella Nova of Orvieto Cathedral, which are here shown to gloss and reveal aspects of the developing Christian doctrine of Purgatory. In chapter 3, I study the Renaissance use of representational ambiguity as a means of signifying the propriety of pursuing an allegorical interpretation of a work and specifically address the typological significance of figures in Botticelli's Primavera. In chapter 4, I examine the philosophical concepts of prisci theologii and theologicae poetae and their significance in relation to the representation of classical figures in medieval and Renaissance works of art. This study provides the necessary background for a reevaluation of syncretic themes in Raphael's Stanza della Segnatura, which is the subject of the final chapter. In chapter 5, I identify classical figures in the frescoes of the Stanza della Segnatura-among them, Orpheus in the Parnassus and Plato and Aristotle in the Disputa-and offer a new interpretation of the iconographic program of the Stanza della Segnatura frescoes as a representation of the means by which participants in the Christian tradition, broadly conceived, approach God through the parallel paths of dialectic and moral philosophy.

Full text
Abstract:
Monotheism and its development in Israelite religion is a topic that continues to invite scholarly engagement. Some of the key talking points around it involve whether or not it was developed before or after the exilic period. At the same time, and irrespective of when it was introduced into Israelite religion, the circumstances that facilitated its development have never been acknowledged with unanimity. The purpose of the present study is two-fold: first, it seeks to prove that pre-exilic Israelite religion was as syncretistic as any other ancient Near Eastern tradition, and that exclusive monotheism only became a reality in Persian period Yehud. Secondly, the study is also intended to authenticate the hypothesis that in the wake of the development of monotheism in Yehud, all deities other than Yahweh were demoted to the status of מלאכים, messengers (angels) leaving Yahweh as the only legitimate God.

Abstract:
Urak Lawoi is the name of one of the sea nomadic tribes which lives along the shores of Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia. They are spread on many of the islands in the Andaman Sea archipelago and Ko Lanta is the main settlement. Urak Lawoi is regarded as the indigenous people of the island and they live there as a minority together with Muslims and Thai-Chinese.  The traditional religion and culture of Urak Lawoi is built upon the animistic belief of their ancestors. In the last 20 years Ko Lanta has experienced a tremendous process of change caused by increasing tourism. The conditions of the Urak Lawoi and their way of life have dramatically changed. The fact that this process brings consequences for the traditional culture and religion is obvious, but in what direction is it developing? To be able to interpret and expound the material from my field studies among Urak Lawoi on Ko Lanta in October-December 2009, I have done a literature search to investigate the animistic traditions and the syncretistic nature of belief in Thailand. I have also tried to find theories about the process of religious change and the forces working behind them. In this essay I am trying to do a theoretical analysis of the field study material using theories and parallel examples I have found in the literature.

Isto, de certa maneira, elucida e confirma a formação cultural e intelectual do Apóstolo: judaica e helênica à luz do cristianismo.
The eighth chapter of Romans is apparently its center: a treaty about spirit on various aspects – human, divine and others. The literary unit Romans 8:14-17 is considered the core of this chapter. The pericope develops the causes and effects of the divine filial adoption [yiothesίas, children of God / god tékna] with an equal and distinct terminology elsewhere (eg, Gal 4:4-7); the text contains linked expressions to the Jewish tradition (vv. 14-15) and also a second more ecumenical/Hellenic feature (vv. 16-17), setting up a dual rhetorical structure and, concomitantly, convergent, due to the semantic elements of one and another culture:yiothesίas (v. 15) and hereditary (v. 17) . This, in a way, elucidates and confirms the cultural and intellectual formation of the Apostle: Jewish and Hellenistic in the light of Christianity. The first dimension of the text highlights the formula Aramaic-Greek ABBA patnr, regarded as liturgical; in the second, the text draws on its quantity and quality of co-constructs: symmartyrei, heirs, compassion, syndoxasthomen(Pauline neologisms or a singular use). The uniqueness of the combination deviates from its conventional, suggesting Sitz im Leben and/or a specific context: strata of an idolatrous paternity (Zeύs-patnr) and reminiscences of salvific syncretism of mystery religions because of co-compounds, common in these Greco-Roman rites formulas. This work considers both the accumulation of data and the componential analysis of these in Romans 8:14-17 provided its syntagmas a semantic understanding colliding over idolatry and syncretism.

Jeffery, Susan Elizabeth. "Resistance, religion and identity in Ojitlan, Oaxaca, Mexico." Thesis, Durham University, 2001. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3960/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation analyses resistance to a regional development programme, which centred on the construction of a dam at Cerro de Oro, Ojitlan, Oaxaca, Mexico and the resettlement of the affected Chinantec population into an area of Uxpanapa, Veracruz. The resistance of the people of Ojitlan took various forms over a seven year period (1972-9), including political action, a syncretic millenarian movement, a reassertion of traditional forms of community fiestas and passive resistance to resettlement. Ojitlan has been affected by national economic and political changes since before the Spanish Conquest. Large plantations established in the tropical lowland areas in the 19th century ceded place to small "ejido" communities, set up under land reform in the 1930s. Control of land and the economic relationships of production are seen as factors affecting the patterns of resistance in Ojitlan. The dissertation reviews the anthropological literature on resistance and on ethnicity. The series of forms of resistance studied can be seen as multiple cultural articulations - attempts to "bridge the gap" between the established Ojitec life and the "modern" systems of work and life introduced by the development project of the Papaloapan River Commission. The Ojitec struggle with modernity involved dealing not just with the question of resettlement in the collective ejidos of Uxpanapa, but also with the reforms promoted in the Oaxacan Catholic Church. The traditional ritual of indigenous Catholicism offered a sphere of legitimate agency and autonomy for the Ojitec in the face of new models of agency and power. The dissertation suggests the usefulness of the concept of resistance, tempered with an analysis of accompanying processes of accommodation to change. Evidence from the 1990s indicates that ethnic identity continues to be important in political resistance to the state in Uxpanapa, a sign of the resilience of forms of Ojitec culture.

Abstract:
The heritage of Hryhoriy Skovoroda is considered from the metaphilosophical point of view. This approach is useful because it allows seeing some syncretism as unity of philosophy, theology, religion, myth, and poetry in the legacy of Hryhoriy Skovoroda. Therefore, the author stresses that when we analyze Hryhoriy Skovoroda’s legacy, it is wrong to divide it into such parts as philosophy, theology, religion, myth, and poetry. This division does not lead to the whole understanding of Hryhoriy Skovoroda’s personality and works. The author argues that Hryhoriy Skovoroda is the follower of Philosophia Perennis tradition, characterized by syncretism. Such syncretism of Skovoroda’s writings is neither bad nor good. We see unique unity of philosophy, poetry, religion and mythology in Skovoroda’s life and his works

Thesis, University of Westminster, 2010. https://westminsterresearch.westminster.ac.uk/item/90445/mediated-encounters-in-diasporic-space-exploring-processes-of-transculturation-syncretism-and-identity-redefinition-in-the-ghanaian-diaspora-in-london.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the diasporic experiences of Ghanaians in London and assesses how Ghanaian identity is redefined and constructed in new contexts. The mediated experience dimension of this exploration considers the difference that the diverse menu of cultural resources offered by television is making to dispositions, cultural proclivities, and patterns of identification across intergenerational differences among Ghanaian-Londoners. The study qualitatively assembles and analyses empirical data from primary sources and integrates material from secondary sources to draw its conclusions. The thesis traces the development of the black diaspora as the historical antecedent or precursor to more recent black diasporic formations. The concept of the black diaspora provides a context for understanding or imagining the fledgling Ghanaian diaspora as another offshoot within the family of black identities in Britain. It is argued that the perceptions of blackness that Ghanaian- Londoners encountered in Britain were derived from the racial construction of blackness as the antithesis of whiteness and hence its construction as deviance. This was purveyed in discourses and reinforced in the public imagination through the media. Not only did it run counter to their self-perceptions, it impinged on their experiences as black people as they were confronted with unflattering stereotypes which they repudiated. In marginal spaces they endeavoured to reinstitute traditions from the homeland and to establish a distinctive presence in the ensemble of black identities in Britain, which in part challenges the monolithic imaginations of blackness from ‘othering’ perspectives, and also highlights an area of blackness underrepresented in academic discourses. Furthermore, the study finds that in their cultural consumption, a factor of their diasporic experience, they exhibited a critical edge and a comparative attitude to screen representations, reflecting the dual and sometimes multiple perspectives of their diasporic condition which enabled them to critique or valorise certain cultural practices from the different worlds of their experience, an indication of processes of cultural negotiation, synthesis, and hybridisation. Overall, this thesis contributes to current academic debates around mediated experience and cultural transformations, and the understanding of processes at the intersections between modernity, diaspora and culture in the era of globalization.

It is understood here, syncretism as "coexistence of conflicting objects" (Bastide, 1973, p. 143), or religious practices that are historically divergent. Christianity has opposed the spiritual practice from its origin; However, some religious groups generally called spiritualists, proposes an integration of spiritualism to Christianity, there are those religious groups that even without address us in favor of a syncretic ideology, has in its very praxis of syncretism . Pentecostalism generally resembles syncretic movements. My goal is to understand how is the transition from a religious movement to another and check how is the coexistence of divergent thinking before. The method of qualitative observation observing their rituals and customs current and comparing them with the rituals antigos. Além empirical observation was used to collect data was printed through research, dissemination Film provided by the leader of the study subject who visit the Church of the Nazarene Cabral ( INC ) . This work investigates, through observation, the training of religious leadership and supporters of such movements ; Upon observation it was found that there was migration of other religion for that particular syncretic movement, both by its members and leadership . It was also found that people who attend this church has no idea that some of their practices has similarities with some spiritualistic practice. Their meetings are based more on the music and emotionalism than any dogma. People arriving coming from another religious thread does not receive much education about the local church. Are received and inserted in the current context with the only requirement to recognize Jesus Christ as their only Savior . Given all that follows, this church researched the reasons that led its members to practice syncretism are associated with Brazilian culture that in their formation is influenced by the mix of Amerindian, African and European religions . In search of a religion to fill the existential void that occur in these individuals they found in the INC, a quick and uncomplicated answer to their religious practice. The leading turn is not concerned with a primary education . His method is to first receive guidance later. And so this syncretic church emerges.

Kiehlbauch, Solange Nicole. ""The Gods Have Taken Thought for Them": Syncretic Animal Symbolism in Medieval European Magic." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2018. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/1923.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates syncretic animal symbolism within medieval European occult systems. The major question that this work seeks to answer is: what does the ubiquity and importance of magical animals and animal magic reveal about overarching medieval perceptions of the world? In response, I utilize the emerging subfield of Animal History as a theoretical framework to draw attention to an understudied yet highly relevant aspect of occult theory and practice. This work argues that medieval Europeans lived in a fundamentally “enchanted” world compared to our modern age, where the permeable boundaries between physical and spiritual planes imbued nature and its creatures with intrinsic power. In addition, with the increasingly pervasive influence of Christianity, animals took on supplementary and often negative symbolic dimensions within evolving magical systems, yet retained their sense of power within a new syncretic context. By surveying classical occult inheritance, the pervasive influence of Christian doctrine, the use of animals in medical magic, and their rich symbolic potential within medieval literature, this interdisciplinary work highlights the multifaceted medley of Christian and pagan elements that became intertwined in daily life despite seeming doctrinal opposition. Although further scholarly research has yet to be done, analyzing understandings of a world filled with intrinsic occult power offers a valuable and revealing contrast to an age of increasingly sharpened boundaries between animals, human beings, the cosmic realm, and nature.

This doctoral thesis deals with conservatism as a tradition of thought and action based on modernity. The aim of the thesis is to present conservatism as an ideology of the crisis, exposing its founding historical basis, the expansion by passing during the twentieth century and how some of its central features are expressed in the ideological scene and Brazilian politician in the years 2010. The thesis was built on the literature review and critical-dialectical method. It deals with the ontology of social being in its main categories, to support the critique of conservatism. We seek to expose the genesis and consolidation of the capitalist mode of production as the foundation on which rise conservative ideologies in general and the particular conservatism. The thought of Edmund Burke is debated as founding the conservative tradition. Convergences between the ideology of conservatism and the Bonapartist political forms are exposed as constituting one of the ideological tendencies of conservatism. The US and British conservative aspects are addressed, the most influential in Brazil. We discussed the "conservatism of Brazilian" as private and national expression of this ideology, with moments of incorporation, mutation and specific differences from the classical, European and American conservatism. We recovered the debate on the syncretic structure of Social Work, understanding that syncretism and eclecticism are the current specific drivers reproduction of conservatism in social work, since the results of both contribute, contradictorily, to the direct or indirect apology for capitalism. Political movements of the extreme right in the world and in Brazil, are discussed as material carriers of ideological trends in contemporary conservatism.

Abstract:
Based on an ethnography conducted between 2013-2015 within a religious community in Brazil, this thesis investigates the meanings of a growing worldwide religious movement fusing beliefs and identity claims deriving from Judaism and Charismatic Evangelicalism. Unlike Messianic Judaism, where Jewish-born people identified as believers in Jesus remain faithful to their Jewish traditions while observing Charismatic Evangelical practices or Christian Zionism, Evangelicals who emphasise the theological and eschatological importance of Jews living in Israel, this thesis addresses a different dimension of this trend. Focusing particularly on women's conversion narratives, this study investigates the reasons why Charismatic Evangelical Brazilians are actively embracing a version of Judaism that requires them to follow the strict dress codes and purity laws of Orthodox Jews while believing in Jesus as the Messiah. My analysis concluded that the emergence of these communities should be understood as a revival aiming to restore some Charismatic Evangelical practices. Pointing to the moral permissiveness, materialism, individualism, and petitionary rhetoric enforced in their former Charismatic Evangelical churches-influenced by Neo-Pentecostal tenets-they embrace an austere religious style characterised by self- cultivation centred in Jewish ritual and ethos. This pious revival also involves recovering a collective past. References to a hidden Jewish heritage and a 'return' to Judaism are mobilised for justifying the community's strict adherence to Jewish practices. Drawing upon a socio-cultural and gender-sensitive analysis, this study examines the historical, religious and subjective reasons behind this emerging 'Judaising' trend in Charismatic Evangelicalism. This thesis also engages with the literature of religious conversion, morality, cultural change and debates examining hybridisation processes.

Abstract:
This thesis looks at the life and works of Daphne du Maurier in the context of the inter-related ideas of religion, psychology and politics. Throughout, I use a methodology based on the concept of the palimpsest. But I also use theory provided by Jung, Plato and Nietzsche – all of which were known to du Maurier to a greater or lesser degree. Other theory is used occasionally, but only as it suggests itself in the context under consideration. The ideas of ‘Resurrection, Renaissance and Rebirth' give the thesis a structure and a theme. The interaction of Christianity and Paganism is also examined. Section One, ‘Introduction – Resurrecting Texts/Lives', introduces the idea of the palimpsest. In reality, this is a twice-written document frequently containing a Christian text which is written over a Pagan one, with the Pagan text resurrecting itself over time. In theory, the palimpsest is a textual space where disparate texts collide and collude in an involuted manner. Section Two, ‘Life and Text – Renaissance Inspired Men', looks at two men who drew their inspiration from the Renaissance as either age or idea - the socialist Victor Gollancz and the conservative Frank Buchman - and to what degree du Maurier interacted with both the people and their conceptual framework. Section Three, ‘Life into Text – Renaissance Men', concerns itself with du Maurier's biographies of two Renaissance brothers, Anthony and Francis Bacon, and how their lives have been read, gnostically, by herself and others, notably The Francis Bacon Society and Nietzsche. Section Four, ‘Spectralised Lives in Text - Rebirthing', examines how the foregoing discussion plays itself out in two of du Maurier's novels, Jamaica Inn (1936) and The Flight of the Falcon (1965). The chapter on Jamaica Inn looks at Celtic Revivalism and how the Celtic gods spectralise the characters of the novel leading to a rebirthing experience for the protagonist Mary Yellan – implicit in this is the concept of the Renaissance-as-idea. The chapter on The Flight of the Falcon shows how the Renaissance-as-age daimonises characters of the twentieth-century. The palimpsest as either a document or a theoretical perspective weaves itself in and out of all my chapters. Section Five, ‘Concluding Remarks', leads to two related conclusions, firstly that du Maurier has been spectralised by the Renaissance, and secondly that du Maurier's life and works, taken together, can be read as an involuted palimpsest.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, we depart from the theoretical basis of French semiotics to treat the syncretism of cinematic language, semiotic system in which it is possible to obtain the homogeneous signification of the syncretic code form from the syncretization of concurrent languages. We aim at establishing the place of cinema in semiotic theory so that the analysis of syncretic objects can be broadly elaborated considering all languages involved in its manifestation. Thus, we assume the conceptualization of syncretism by Hjelmslev (1975), Greimas and Courtés (1979) and the theoretical advances proposed by Beividas (1983) to deepen the discussion about how the arrangement and the organization of languages that participate in the system of syncretization in the language of cinema may occur, assuming that they would act as functions of the syncretic system, and also as functives of new functions which would be created. We intend to demonstrate with a model of syncretization of the syncretic code form that a movie can be analyzed in a broad approach of syncretization so that the complexity of the language that constructs its signification is achieved through the organization of several code forms, the individual languages that participate in the syncretic system. Finally, we aim at covering the formal and material peculiarities of cinematic language through the semiotic analysis of its system of signification.

The contact between European Christianism and African religiosities took place prior to the African Diaspora, developing into an African Christianism. In Colonial Brazil, it was inserted into the popular Catholicism spread by the black religious Brotherhoods, most of all in Minas Gerais, where to this day the Congados and Reinados are still carried out. To understand the interfaces of the religious experiences as from a specific case study, the Congado de Bela Vista de Minas, constitutes this research’s purpose. While having a Christian Catholic guidance, the religious experiences of the congadeiros from Bela Vista, expressed in their rituals and narratives, have connections with elements that go beyond the contours of Roman Apostolic Catholicism. Additionally to the pursuit of the holy, through their festivities in devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary, the partakers experience the dislocation of individual and collective identities. Thus, through fieldworks, execution of semi-structured interviews, consults to primary sources, ethnographic description and bibliographic review, this thesis addresses, mainly, the thematic involving religious syncretism and religious identities.
