Full textThe main aim of this study was to test and ascertain, objectively, theexistence/occurrence of the phenomenon of Synergy in teams. To do this, the results of anonline course in Umea University, where students are invariably required to do a bunch ofindividual as well as team assignments, were analysed: the idea was to compare the marksobtained by the students in their team assignments with their marks in their individualassignments and to check if there was a reasonably good number of instances where the teammark was higher than the highest individual mark in that particular team. The basicassumption was that in case the team mark of a team was higher than the highest individualmark in that team, then, it can be presumed that synergy has taken place in that team for thatparticular team assignment. And, given a reasonably large sample of teams, it would beinstructive to see what percentage of groups/teams actually show synergy. In case a goodnumber of teams show such results then we could conclude that there was objective evidencein favour of the synergy. In case our analysis brought to fore such results then it would benatural to take the study one step ahead and test a broad causal relationship of synergy withthe complexity/difficulty of task at hand. After analysing the results of about 387 students, who worked in about 104 teams, itwas found that about 69.23% teams scored higher than the highest scoring individual; 93.26%teams faired better than the average score of team members; and, 98.07% teams can be said tohave performed better if compared to the lowest individual score.Further, one level below, when team-score and individual-score were compared acrossdifferent team and individual tasks (Case Studies), it still came to fore that teams hadoutperformed the individuals. And, when a single student’s marks in his team assignmentswere compared with his marks in his individual assignments, in five out of six comparisons itwas found that the team mark was convincingly higher than the individual mark. All these results strongly indicated the existence/occurrence of synergy in teams. In addition to this, an experiment on two teams of students was also performed toshow that synergy was more likely to happen if the task at hand was complex/ difficult. Theresults of this experiment seemed to corroborate the contention of the researchers. Keywords: Project Management, Team, Team Work, Individual work, Synergy

Full textPrevious research has shown that quality management (QM) and market orientation (MO) complement each other to produce a synergistic effect on value creation and delivery, customer satisfaction and performance. However, this literature suffers from several limitations, it is more predominantly conceptual, focuses more on total quality management while neglecting other QM models, and does not consider innovation. Based on the dynamic capabilities theory, the purpose of this thesis dissertation is to overcome those gaps by studying the effects of QM (ISO 9001), the responsive and proactive MO and their synergies on incremental and radical product innovation. Also, we study whether these synergistic effects are moderated by the motives behind ISO 9001 certification and the environmental uncertainty. Using a mixed methodology dominated by a quantitative approach, we tested a structural model, using the PLS-SEM approach, examining hypothetical relationships between QM (ISO 9001), responsive and proactive MO, and incremental and radical product innovation over 130 Moroccan companies certified ISO 9001 having introduced product innovations on the market. The results reveal that QM (ISO 9001) and OM are mutually reinforcing to improve product innovation. In particular, we find that MQ (ISO 9001) and responsive MO have a positive synergistic effect on incremental product innovation, and QM (ISO 9001) and proactive MO have a positive synergistic effect on innovation radical product. These effects are stronger when the level of environmental uncertainty is higher. We discussed in detail these results and their implications

Full textThis doctoral thesis focuses on mechanisms of heat transfer enhancement in plate and fin heat sink geometries. First part of the thesis is dedicated to study an academic configuration using numerical simulations to achieve an improvement in conjugate heat transfer by modifying only the geometrical shape (through punching) of the conductive plane fins. An in-depth local analysis of the flow and thermal fields was carried out with the local synergy principle, velocity and thermal gradients, to understand the effect of geometric modifications. This thesis also presents the development of heat sinks with increased thermo-hydraulic performance for on-board electronic box cooling applications. The intensification of the heat transfer is obtained by the generation of secondary flows which cause an intensive mixing of fluid and reduces the thermal resistance to the wall by disrupting the development of the thermal boundary layer. Different heat sink geometries with two types of secondary flow generators : delta winglet pair and protrusions were numerically studied using RANS approach. The thermo-hydraulic performances of the geometries equipped with vortex generators were compared with that of a smooth reference heat sink. The prototypes were also manufactured and tested on an experimental bench specifically designed to perform global performance measurements in terms of thermal power and pressure drops. Experimental and numerical results were compared to qualify the simulations performed. Subsequently, an optimization study using Taguchi factorial analysis was used to optimize the geometrical parameters of the chosen dissipaters. Two objective functions were considered : maximization of either iso-pumping power performance criteria (PEC) or average wall temperature of the dissipaters compared to the reference case. The global thermo-hydraulic performance analysis of the studied geometries was completed by a qualitative analysis of local flow and thermal fields, in particular with the local field synergy principle

"Positiva miljöeffekter i kölvattnet av Lean produktion : Kan en integrering av miljöaspekter och Lean produktion bidra till att nå synergieffekter och minska risken för suboptimering?" Thesis, Linköping University, Linköping University, Department of Management and Engineering, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-17649.
This report is the result of a master thesis written at the Department of Management and Engineering at Linköping University commissioned by the consultancy firm Sustainia AB.
Lean production, also known as Lean, has during the last decade increasingly become a more attractive production philosophy for decreasing costs and increasing customer satisfaction by improving customer service and obtaining more efficient production flows. Several authors have pointed out that Lean has the potential to directly improve the environmental performance of a company, mostly by decreasing waste generation. Further, there are studies showing that some possibilities for improvement and cost savings risk not being discovered if the operations are seen strictly from a Lean perspective. When an environmental perspective is included there is a chance that these improvements and cost savings are discovered. This indicates that both environmental and cost related advantages might be achieved by integrating the Lean approach with that of the environment.
The purpose of this master thesis was to investigate how the work with Lean and environmental aspects affect one another. If applying the two principles together was shown to be both possible and beneficial from a business point of view, the authors would propose how these two concepts could be integrated into a single model. A combination of literature studies and interviews were used to fulfill the purpose. Four Swedish enterprises, which work according to the Lean principles and also have an active environmental profile, were interviewed about their way of working with the two approaches, as well their views on an integration of these.
From the findings in this study the authors concluded that several of the fundamental concepts concerning Lean and environmental aspects support each other. Within both, continuous improvements and waste elimination are seen as important components, and they both support an organisational culture where the personnel are encouraged to solve problems and improve the performance of the company. Conversely the authors found that there is a risk that certain of the Lean tools risk having a negative influence on the company’s environmental performance. However, in many cases this can be avoided by proactive planning.
Lean can contribute to a company’s environmental work by its proactive approach, structured way of operating and long-term way of thinking. In general the interviewed companies regarded Lean as having a positive influence on their environmental work, even though none of them had carried out an evaluation on how their work with Lean affected their environmental key performance indicators. The quantitative data obtained from the literature study indicates that Lean can lead to a direct decrease of a company’s environmental impact within several areas. As a result of these qualitative and quantitative data the authors of this thesis have found clear indications showing that Lean might have a positive impact on environmental key performance indicators. An active environmental work can also contribute to the work with Lean. Potential cost saving, which might not have been discovered with the Lean perspective, can be revealed when the organisation is studied from an environmental point of view.
The study further showed that it not only is possible to integrate Lean and environmental work, but that it also has potential to be beneficial from both a business and an environmental standpoint. An integration of Lean and environmental issues can reduce the risk of sub optimisations, and synergies can be achieved, meaning that the two systems can accomplish more together than they would in isolation. With this knowledge, the authors composed a model for how Lean and environmental work can be practised and integrated. In consultation with Sustainia AB it was decided that this model should be called Green Lean, which hence refers to an environmentally favourable, “green”, version of Lean.

.In recent years, Taiwan has faced the impact from different respects domestically and internationally. In order to increase competition, merger and acquisition happens more often among the industry, especially among financial institutes. This work also studies the effect and influence of the merger and acquisition among banks and stock brokerages from the view of finance. The objects of the study are the banks and stock brokerages which have been engaging merger and acquisition. The time frame of the study is between 1991 and 1998. In measuring variables contributing to the performance and synergy of merger and acquisition, factor analysis is applied first to select the factor dimension, and then analyze on performance and synergy. The study shows that banks will attract consumers'''' deposits after merger and acquisition ,but no effect on synergy. There is no change on performance and synergy for non-publicly traded companies. After merger and acquisition, the solvency of publicly traded companies will decrease and the operating synergy will increase but happens only during the first one trough the third and the sixth. The merge synergy varies depending on whether the company is traded publicly or privately as well as types of business.

This research is trying to investigate how the partnership between core and satellite factories would affect the business performance under the concept of Synergy Development System in automobile industry. Most researches were done in qualitative way and focused on discussing how partnership could help the performance of core factories rather than satellite factories. Many researches about the partnership of Synergy Development System discussed from the aspects of supply chain management performance and factors which would affect supply chain performance. Contents are trying to find the main variable of the partnership. But there are no researchers conducting control experiment on the relationship between partnership and business performance. This research was based on four dimensions such as partnership, business performance, short term performance and long term performance according to the literature review. Control experiment was conducted on satellite factories located in the southern Taiwan to verify how the partnership would affect the satellite factories in the Synergy Development System. This research applied Principal Component Analysis to derive two new variables to replace the original variables such as information exchange, trust, partnership management, specific assets, partner asymmetry, center-factory performance, resource characteristics and strategic alliance. And to exam the relevance between the variables such as partnership and business performance. If the relevance are significant, which means the partnership variable able to explain the relationship well, and the variables rely and affect each other. For the correlation between the variables of partnership and the operation performance of satellite factories, the verification result showed that there is no significant relevance between the net profit margin and partnership. Besides considering partnership, the satellite factories need to achieve the goals of quality, cost, deliver and service to increase business performance and maintain the constancy of competition advantage. Belief is the most important in the partnership variables. The satellite factories recognized that partnership would affect short term operation performance more than in the long term.

This study focuses on cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&As) from the listed companies in the United States during the period 1990 to 2014.To explore the synergy sources of cross-border acquirers, we use the changes in operating cost ratio, R&D expenses, advertising expenses, and capital expenditures before and after the merger and acquisition as proxy variables to measure the strategic motives behind M&A. The Empirical results show that acquiring firms have significant negative cumulative abnormal returns in the long-run. Further, I find the long-run performance would be different due to different sources of synergy. I find that there is a positive impact on long-term abnormal returns when the operating costs decrease after the cross border M&A. In addition, the regression results show there is a significant positive effect on the abnormal return when the R&D expense increases. This effect, however, I expect that the possible reason is the economies of scale of the lower cost of R&D. Finally, I find that advertising expenses and capital expenditures have no significant effect on long-term performance. The long-term performance is better when the cross border M&A is horizontal and target is privately held. In sum, the post-merger integration and expected synergies might have different impact on the short-run performance in different countries. The acquiring firms should still focus on the initial strategy in the long run.

The law of financial holding corporation was announced in July 2001. The formation of the financial holding company system was big transformation of monetary system for our country, and had huge influence to the financial market. The establishment of the financial holding company is to pursue its synergy in business management. However, its synergy of earnings is achieved through proper integration that the service activities of various subsidiary companies are operated in peak efficiency, and through: 1. Cross selling to increase revenue; 2. Resources sharing to reduce the cost of operation; 3. Capital efficiency effect to promote the investment return Thus, the business integration of various members in the group becomes the key factor that influences whether the business goal will achieve. This research uses the finance ratio analysis that has been widely utilized to study and discuss the operation performance of the financial holding companies, take return of equity (ROE) of shareholder as the foundation to derive each financial ratio variable, and then divide the financial holding companies into two groups based on the level of integration: one for financial holding companies with higher integration, and the other for those with relative lower integration to compare if there is significant difference in operation performance. The purpose is to understand the influence of business integration on operation performance of financial holding companies, providing management decision-making reference for the financial holding companies. The conclusion of this research indicates that business integration has generally positive effect on the financial holding companies. In addition, high integration also has positive contribution to the operation performance of the financial holding companies as explains separately as follows: First, the ROE of financial companies in the highly integrated group is better than those in the lower integrated group. Second, the financial holding companies in the highly integrated group have significance difference on mean value of examination of each financial ratio variable. Third, the trend charts of various financial ratio variables show that the performance of the financial holding companies in the highly integrated group have comparatively better than those in the lower integrated group. Fourth, the performance or the financial holding companies in the highly integrated group have comparatively have better than those in the lower integrated group in growth of each financial ratio variable in various seasons

On the trend of financial globalization, every country in the worldwide removes of financial control. And international financial institutions have a trend with M&A and across trade in business. Currently domestic financial institutions have drastic competition. After joining WTO, domestic financial institutions face with competition from international financial groups. So the Government plans law of Financial Holding Company and executes in July, 2001. This research wants to study after the financial holding companies were formed, their performance become better or not and create synergy. The objects of the research are financial holding companies’ subsidiaries. Factor analysis is applied first to select the factor dimension, and then performance and synergy are tested by Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. All research results are as follows: after the bank industry joins the FHCs, capital ratio, loan to deposits ratio and operating expenses ratio are significantly different and other performance indexes aren’t different; the performance indexes of the sub security and insurance aren’t significantly different. In synergy: the sub banks don’t capture market synergy but capture financial synergy; the sub securities don’t capture market synergy and operational synergy, but capture financial synergy; the sub insurances don’t capture operational synergy and financial synergy, but capture market synergy.

In recent years, the word “M&A”is a very important issue. A firm has channels to expand. One is the internal expansion and the other is external expansion. However, M&A, the most popular way of the external expansion is the fastest one. In past, the most literature about M&A, such as, Kitching (1967)and Lubatkin (1983) focus on the general industry or financial industry in monopolistic competition market. The relative research focuses on the M&A in oligopoly market are few. Telecommunication industry revenue reached 317.6 billion in 2006 and belongs to the strategic industry in Taiwan. This study focuses on Telecommunication industry to study the impact of merger and acquisitions to synergy and performance for enterprise. I expect that the result can provide some implications to investor and enterprise. This study employs Mann-Whitney U to study the synergy and performance of M&A and use OLS to estimate coefficient of the impact factors. Then, ARCH-LM and VIF are used to measure heteroskedasticity and collinearity. Empirical results operating synergy and marking synergy are appearing show that in negative direction. Only financial synergy appears synergy. Financial structure has improved after M&A. Liquidity and growth worsen. Operating capacity and profitability exhibit inconsistency. In terms of factor of impacting, Financial Structure and Profitability are important factors in operating synergy, Growth is important factor in marking synergy and Financial Structure, Profitability and Growth are important factors in financial synergy.

Water is the most abundant component in the planet, its physical and chemical characteristics allows life in oceans, rivers, lakes, mountains, and all over the planet’s surface. It is the most important liquid to preserve life; even so it needs treatment to be drinkable. The Millennium Declaration Goals include a target to “Halve the proportion of people who are unable to reach or afford safe drinking water by 2015” Since long time ago, there has been recognized the relative importance of water quality, quantity, sanitation and hygiene not only to protect but also to improve health. In this work, the performance of a solar type box is evaluated as an alternative to water treatment technology at a household level. In order to analyze different conditions which the water can be warmed up inside the solar type box, several experiments carried out at Department of solar Energy laboratory, Kun Shan University, Tainan, Taiwan R.O.C. were performed with the main focus on E. Coli. These experiments demonstrated that hanging the water container inside the solar type box instead of placing it over the base, allows 40% more UV radiation and the same IR radiation. In relation to materials as a water container; plastic bag (polietilene), glass and PET suggested an efficiency of 75%, 50% and 45% respectively relative to IR, and 88%, 76.49% and 74.94% concerning to UV radiation. The SODIS method vs. solar type box experiment and conceptual analysis comparison indicated that the first one needs 4,800Wh of solar radiation and 16.61Wh of UV radiation to eliminate 99.99% of bacteria; the solar type box needs 1050Wh of total solar radiation and 7.39W.h of UV radiation to get the same results leading to an efficiency of 6.92% and. 52.82% when compare with the first method regarding IR radiation and 56.19% vs. 24.95% in relation with UV radiation. The Solar type box for water treatment is an option for the solution of the drinking water problem, financially viable and physically useful.

In 1995 in Taiwan, the department of the treasury permitted the new bank into business bank industry. At that time, the bank industry began to suffer from stick competition in Taiwan. New banks enlarge the business positions so they merger with cooperate society of credit. In this study, we would test the business bank to merger the local corporate bank. That would increase the performance and synergy or not. After Wilcoxon Test analyzed, we found under conclusion: First, we used matched samples In the indexes of performance, Net income before tax/ income before tax, income before tax/ business income, income before tax/ numbers of employees, the rate of liquidity preparation, the growth rate of deposit, the growth rate of loan, the growth rate of investment had signification changes mergers and acquisitions. In the indexes of synergy, the profitability, market share and the ability of market monopoly have significant changes. Second, After and before terms of mergers, we compared with and concluded that: In the indexes of performances, own capital / risk asset, net income / asset, net income before tax / average net income, income before tax / numbers of employees, the rate of liquidity preparation, term deposits / total deposits, numbers of CP / term deposits, the interest sensitivity of asset / the interest sensitivity of liability, the growth rate of deposit, the growth rate of loans, the growth rate of investment have significant changes. In the indexes of synergy, business income, profitability, and the monopoly of market and market shares have significant changes.

The research uses the method of case research and takes the Yuanta bank as an example to discuss whether the synergy can be created and the operating performance of the subsidiary can increase as expected or not after the banks join the financial holding companies in bank industry , on the practical analysis of operating performance, we take capital adequacy ratio, asset quality, management ability, Earning ability, liquidity (CAMEL )to be the indicators of estimating the bank’s financial performance. On the practical analysis of merger synergy , we use the Tobin’s Q value to estimate the value of the company, and use the percentage of stock share which is hold by foreign institution to estimate the value of corporate governance .The result shows that , the operating Performance of Yuanta bank after joining Yuanta financial holdings: (1) the capital adequacy ratio decreases first ,and then increases insignificantly , but it can reach the normal level regulated by the law (2) the asset quality decreases instead of increasing insignificantly but the over loan ratio has decreased year by year (3) the management ability increases insignificantly but it can help to control the asset quality, increase the risk conscious ability and reduce the operating cost (4) the Earning decreases instead of increasing insignificantly, but the finance is healthy and the prospect of credit rank is stable (5) there is no significant difference for liquidity; the result of the merger synergy after Yuanta bank joins Yuanta financial holdings : (1) the two set of Tobin’s Q values used by two different formulations both increase insignificantly but the corporate value increase (2) the percentage of stock share which is hold by foreign institution increase insignificantly ,but the value of corporate governance increase .

According to the resource-based view, a firm’s competitive advantage is built on a set of strategically relevant resources. When a firm possesses resources which determine the efficiency and capability of an integrated functioning strategy, sustained competitive advantages will thus be attained and maintained; and firm performance will be in turn improved significantly. This study was to explore the relationships among knowledge-based human resource management (HRM) practice, knowledge-based organizational culture, information technology (IT) synergy, knowledge management (KM) capability and firm performance. The central concept of this study lied in KM capability which was designed as pivotal strategic management approach within a firm. Three predictors─knowledge-based HRM practice, knowledge-based organizational culture and IT synergy were hypothesized to positively influence KM capability and firm performance. The mediation effects through KM capability between three predictors and firm performance were investigated as well. This study was designed as an empirical quantitative research by adapting the research method of questionnaire survey. Thirty-one travel agencies contracting with airlines as wholesales and operating outbound group tours were selected as investigated samplings. Data collected from 327 respondents was analyzed by LISREL 8.8 and SPSS 18.0 for Window. A confirmatory factor analysis of structural equation model (SEM) was applied to test the research hypotheses and the measurement of structural model. The research results indicated that knowledge-based HRM practice and organizational culture had significantly positive influence on KM capability; knowledge-based organizational culture, IT synergy and KM capability had significantly positive influence on firm performance. The research results also supported that KM capability had the mediation effect in between knowledge-based HRM practice and firm performance. The study results were provided as references for academics with regards to the researches of travel industry concerning KM, HRM, organizational culture, IT and firm performance. Furthermore, the implications from research results were offered as references and recommendations for practitioners concerning strategic management in the related fields.

Full textThe synergistic interaction between teammates in soccer has properties that can be captured by Social Network Analysis (SNA). The analysis of networks formed by team players passing a ball in a match shows that team success is correlated with high network density and clustering coefficient, as well as with reduced network centralization. However, oversimplification needs to be avoided, as network metrics events associated with success should not be considered equally to those that are not. In the present study, we investigated whether network density, clustering coefficient and centralization can predict successful or unsuccessful team performance. We analyzed 12 games of the Group Stage of UEFA Champions League 2015/2016 Group C by using public records from TV broadcasts. Notational analyses were performed to categorize attacking sequences as successful or unsuccessful, and to collect data on the ball-passing networks. The network metrics were then computed. A hierarchical logistic-regression model was used to predict the successfulness of the offensive plays from network density, clustering coefficient and centralization, by using the number of total passes as a moderator variable. Results confirmed the independent effect of network metrics. Density, but not clustering coefficient or centralization, was a significant predictor of the successfulness of offensive plays. We found a negative relation between density and successfulness of offensive plays. However, reduced density was associated with a higher number of offensive plays, albeit mostly unsuccessful. Conversely, high density was associated with a lower number of successful offensive plays, but also with overall fewer offensive plays and “ball possession losses” before the attacking team entered the finishing zone. An individual team analysis indicated that a relationship between team performance and density is team dependent. Independent SNA of team performance is important to minimize the limitations of oversimplifying effective team synergies.
