External chemical reactors for steam reforming and water gas shift reactions are needed for a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell system using syngas fuel. For the preheating of syngas and stable steam reforming reaction at 600 °C, residual hydrogen from a fuel cell and a certain amount of additional syngas are burned. The combustion temperature is calculated and the molar ratio of the syngas into burner and steam reformer is determined. Based on thermodynamics and electrochemistry, the electric power density and energy conversion efficiency of a PEM fuel cell based syngas are expressed.

Abstract Corrosion of alloys and coatings for syngas coolers of entrained slagging gasifiers is accelerated by exposure to moist air during the start-up and shutdown periods of operation. Modes of attack include general corrosion, pitting, intergranular corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. Abstract An investigation into the rupture of a carbon steel elbow in the methanation area of the Great Plains Coal Gasification plant is discussed. Attack on the four-year-old line was localized and led to a fire and plant shutdown. Detailed visual inspection and laboratory examinations showed that corrosion was caused by carbonic acid formed by carbon dioxide and water contained in the gas. The root of the problem was the off-specification performance of an upstream heat exchanger that led to higher outlet temperatures and CO2 concentrations. Abstract The answers provided by fundamental metal dusting research do not match industrial experiences in the production of synthesis gas (syngas) for methanol and other gas-to-liquids (GTL) processes. This can most probably be attributed to a misunderstanding of what constitutes an aggressive gas environment, ignoring the influences of oxidation in the metal dusting process, and the duration of laboratory experiments. This paper reviews the development of a metal dusting research strategy to attempt bridging the gap between laboratory and reality, as well as the trends in syngas technology.

Using syngas as fossil fuel offers the benefit in term of suppress consumption of petroleum fuel. Gasification and reforming process can be used for syngas production. This work investigated the combined of gasifier and reformer process of charcoal with recycled CO2. The investigation was carried on both simulation and experimental. The simulation results show that carbon conversion depended on operating temperature. The effect of O2 in feed stream offered more heat obtained from process which optimum at O2/B = 0.2.
