The scope of this thesis was to study thermodynamics of lead oxide and cobalt oxide as the chemical looping agent for oxygen. Furthermore, the theoretical results were verified experimentally. Ellingham diagrams were constructed for the selected oxides. Then, detailed thermodynamic analysis was conducted for stability analysis at different temperatures and pressures. The goal of this work was to establish the suitable and limiting concentrations of Zn, Cu and Mn compounds during syngas fermentation. The results showed that cells encased in polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) membranes had a faster accumulation of methane in reactors containing fermentation medium dosed with 5 mg/L of each heavy metal compared to free cells. The fermentation of syngas (a mixture of CO, CO2 and H2) to produce ethanol is of interest as an alternative fuel. Clostridium carboxidivorans, has been found to produce higher than average amounts of ethanol and butanol from CO-rich mixtures. This project sought to determine the effects of the redox level in the solution, partial pressures in the headspace and mass transfer limitations on the products obtained through fermentation of syngas.
