Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract This paper discusses a particular type of Arabic word combinations, where basically two words, either antonyms or synonyms, are coordinated in fixed phrases or ‘coup lings’ that are of frequent occurrence in the language. Depending on whether the semantic relationship between the component parts of a given coupling is one of antonymy or synonymy, the study identifies two subtypes of these phrases, namely ‘Antonymous Couplings’ and ‘Synonymous Couplings’, respectively. Both types of couplings are here subjected to a close examination with a view to pointing out their main characteristics and identifying the various types of constraints governing the positioning of their components in relation to each other. The study also sheds light on some cross-linguistic similarities and differences of these couplings, their relevance to human experience, and their translatability from one language into another. It is concluded: (i) that both types of couplings are characterized by brevity, forcefulness, symbolism, and structural harmony; (ii) that the particular order in which the two components of a given coupling are arranged is not haphazard; rather it is governed by one or more of a number of considerations; (iii) that both types of couplings lend themselves well to functional and dynamic translation due to the fact that the pairing of words in such couplings is a linguistic universal, which in turn is attributable to the similarity of human experience.

Abstract:
The article deals with synonymous terms used in the works of the theory and history of literary science published in Lithuanian between 1918 and 1940 (i.e. period of independent Lithuania). The paper discusses extent of terminology synonymy, types of one-word synonyms according to root of terms and their origin, identifies the fate of synonymous terms. The work follows the opposition principle.Synonymy is characteristic to literary terminology of aforesaid time (about 40% one-word terms have one-word synonyms). That proves terminological statement, that synonymy is typical to the first stages of development of terminology in particular domain. Besides terms have been extracted from texts and that might determine greater amount of synonymy and other variation of terminology. Since the better part of sources investigated is textbooks and other works for learning/studies, the reason for some synonyms (especially international) might be a didactic one.Synonymic relations link co-rooted terms (48% of the lines of synonyms), not co-rooted terms (37%) as well as mixed ones (15%). Lines of synonyms comprise of Lithuanian synonyms and synonyms with borrowed root (mostly international one) (38%), only Lithuanian-origin synonyms (36%) or synonyms with borrowed root alone (26%).In accordance with the number of sources, international terms and hybrids with international root not always overtake Lithuanian synonyms. Besides some of the first ones have more than one Lithuanian synonym. From international and Lithuanian synonyms now in some cases international terms are used, in other cases – Lithuanian synonyms or both Lithuanian and international terms. Several former international and Lithuanian synonyms have different meanings at present.Lithuanian-origin synonyms reflect realized possibilities for terminologization and term formation. Words that were terminologizated, in general lexis had synonyms, the same with underlying words of terms derivatives. That is a linguistic reason for some synonymous terms.Surely, some terms of lines of synonyms were used just in one source, but there are terms among them that have remained.Usually the synonym that was used in a greater number of the sources (as well as in the sources of the thirties) has entrenched. An attempt to differentiate meanings of some synonyms is observable in the period investigated. From the side of regulation of terminology, synonymous terms investigated are both the reason for terminology harmonization (efforts to find best terms) and the result of it (a few terms naming one concept for the time being particularly in different sources). Some synonyms might occur due to attempt to avoid polysemy of terms.

Abstract:
The article describes the lexical synonyms of the Evenki language by the example of adjectives denoting the character traits of a person. Their nature is revealed, and a general characterization is given, with specific features identified. The study has employed the most applicable synonymic criteria for Evenki lexical material described in the theoretical literature and used in the research practice of the lexical synonymy of different languages. The ways and means of synonymous resource formation have been revealed. The principle of selecting synonymous series in the Evenki language and allocating the dominant has been developed. The specific features of the synonymic series of the lexical-grammatical category of Evenki adjectives have been clarified, as well as the selected types of lexical synonyms have been characterized. When defining lexical synonyms, it is fundamentally important to understand them as different linguistic units expressing the same concept. The main criterion for distinguishing lexical synonyms in the Evenki language is the commonality of the semantic basis, allowing for the differences of the semantic, stylistic, emotionally expressive nature within the same concept. An additional criterion is the interchangeability of synonyms in determining their meanings.

Abstract:
The contrastive analysis is a new way of describing lexical synonymy, a very important linguistic phenomenon because of its situation in the very heart of meaning and in that of speech : this approach can let us know how each language builds, with its own lexical and morpho-syntaxic means, specific signifying configurations. The described data (chosen in French literary texts compared with their translations in Russian) give evidence for semantic complexity of the visual perception verbs both in French and in Russian, verbs which constitute ramified frames with fuzzy shapes. Cases of plain and direct equivalence are not frequent. .

Abstract:
On June 8, 2007, the Supreme Court of Canada [SCC] overruled its jurisprudence of the past twenty years on freedom of association. The majority of the judges agreed that section 2d) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms protects the right to the process to collective bargaining. In doing so, the SCC rejected the ratio of the majority enunciated in the 1987 trilogy and, at last, gave place to international labour law, in particular to freedom of association principles elaborated by the International Labour Organization's supervisory bodies. The analysis of these principles, focused on three related rights, i.e. the right to collective bargaining, the right to strike and the right not to associate, allows the author to conclude that for the first time, Canada is showing greater respect for its international obligations. What the SCC will decide for the right to strike remains to be seen.

Cambray, Guillaume. "Evolutivité : le cas des intégrons et utilisation de séquences synonymes en évolution dirigée." Paris 7, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009PA077230.

Full text
Abstract:
Phenotypic stability is essential to the success of organisms evolving under steady conditions. However, the environment is subjected to perpetual stochastic variations, to which living beings must constantly adapt. Evolvability characterizes the ability of a population to respond to such selective pressures through the generation of heritable phenotypic changes. Most mutations being deleterious, processes enabling the confinement of mutations to periods of stress, or to specific loci and well-defined phenotypes, have been selected over evolution. Integrons constitute a particularly sophisticated illustration of such processes. Initially identified through their involvement in multi-resistance to antibiotics, these bacterial genetic Systems are specialized in the exchange and stockpiling of accessory genes and therefore constitute an important source of genetic diversity. This work shows that integrons are directly coupled with the SOS System, a major bacterial stress response. By allowing the generation of significant phenotypic diversity during periods of stress without impacting the rest of the genome, integrons hence constitute a paradigmatic example of evolvability. Another aspect of this work demonstrates that synonymous coding sequences - although specifying identical proteins -can access different area of the phenotypic space through ponctual mutations. When properly exploited, this property can enhance the evolvability of any protein in the context of biotechnological applications

Abstract:
The causes of the problem of multiplicity of synonyms in arabic techno-scientific terminology are numerous. However, lexical innovation shows that it is basically methodic differences regarding the use of the whole linguistic processes which create different terms used in a synonymic way to designate the same new things and concepts. Arab academicians classify these processes as follows : reactivation of old words; derivation; formation of compound words; semantic extension of existing words and lexical borrowing. The dialectal sources are to be included. Moreover, the influence of foreign languages, namely, frensh and english significantly contribute to the problem of synonyms. This influence appears mainly in borrowed words and semantic loans (or loan translation) which occur in an interlingual process as a result of languages contact where the plurality of foreign cultural sources lead to two different tendencies within the terminological activity in arabic language

Abstract:
Being able to automatically discover synonymous entities in an open-world setting benefits various tasks such as entity disambiguation or knowledge graph canonicalization. Existing works either only utilize entity features, or rely on structured annotations from a single piece of context where the entity is mentioned. To leverage diverse contexts where entities are mentioned, in this paper, we generalize the distributional hypothesis to a multi-context setting and propose a synonym discovery framework that detects entity synonyms from free-text corpora with considerations on effectiveness and robustness. As one of the key components in synonym discovery, we introduce a neural network model SynonymNet to determine whether or not two given entities are synonym with each other. Instead of using entities features, SynonymNet makes use of multiple pieces of contexts in which the entity is mentioned, and compares the context-level similarity via a bilateral matching schema. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model is able to detect synonym sets that are not observed during training on both generic and domain-specific datasets: Wiki+Freebase, PubMed+UMLS, and MedBook+MKG, with up to 4.16% improvement in terms of Area Under the Curve and 3.19% in terms of Mean Average Precision compared to the best baseline method.

Abstract:
A word in natural language can be polysemous, having multiple meanings, as well as synonymous, meaning the same thing as other words. Word sense induction attempts to find the senses of polysemous words. Synonymy detection attempts to find when two words are interchangeable. We combine these tasks, first inducing word senses and then detecting similar senses to form word-sense synonym sets (synsets) in an unsupervised fashion. Given pairs of images and text with noun phrase labels, we perform synset induction to produce collections of underlying concepts described by one or more noun phrases. We find that considering multi-modal features from both visual and textual context yields better induced synsets than using either context alone. Human evaluations show that our unsupervised, multi-modally induced synsets are comparable in quality to annotation-assisted ImageNet synsets, achieving about 84% of ImageNet synsets' approval.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Consideration of aspects of the functioning of mass media in society requires a comprehensive approach based on universal media theory. The article presents an attempt to consider public events in terms of a functional approach to understanding the media, proposed by media theorist Dennis McQuayl in the theory of mass communication. Public events are analyzed, on the one hand, as a complex object of journalistic reflection and, on the other hand, as a situational media that examines the relationship of agents of the social and media fields in the space of communication interaction. Taking into account philosophical approaches to the interpretation of the concept of event, considering its semantic spectrum, specificity of use and synonyms in the Ukrainian language, a working definition of the concept of public event is given. Based on case-analysis of public events, In accordance with the functions of the media the functions of public events are outlined. This is is promising for the development of study on typology of public events in the context of mass communication theory. The realization of the functions of public events as situational media is illustrated with such vivid examples of cultural events as «Gogolfest» and «Book Forum in Lviv». The author shows that a functional approach to understanding public events in society and their place in the space of mass communication, opens prospects for studying the role of media in reflecting the phenomena of social reality, clarifying the presence and quality of communication between media producers and media consumers.
