Abstract:
Previous literature mainly focused on the categorization of prepositions in investigation of the syntactical structure Pashto grammar. This paper will adopt syntactical model of Svenonius to examine the syntactic structure of Pashto prepositional system and will compare it with English to find out differences between English and Pashto prepositions. Svenonius’ model has been applied to the structured data on preposition IN and ON in English and PUH-KE and PUH-BANDE in Pashto retrieved from different sources. Purposeful structured sample was used for analysis. The analysis revealed that the prepositional systems in two languages exhibit syntactic and semantic differences, which often affect the translation and learning of second language. The analysis also revealed that the Svenonius’s model has to be modified to harness the syntactical structure of Pashto language. Moreover, Pashto speakers use the contact schema more often in expression of spatial relations than the English, and this paper suggests further research into spatial schemas to comprehensively analyze the Pashto prepositions.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the semantic-syntactical structure of the appositive phrase in the Ukrainian language. The term “double name”is used for the demonstration of semantical parameteres of the apposition phrase. Two levels of syntactic analysis are considered: abstract-grammatical level (internal structure of the appositive word-combinations) and concrete-grammatical level (the function in sentence structure). The concrete-grammatical analysis indicates that appositional phrases in the sentence are: syntactically indivisible components that serve as a simple part of the sentence (subject, object). The conflict arises between formal analyticity and functional syntheticity. This conflict is caused by nominative features of double name (compound nouns indicates the same subject of objective reality). Therefore they can be referred to as the type of lexical (stable) word-combinations. Abstract-grammatical analysis leads to the conclusion that internal structure of the appositional phrase can express different semantic-syntactical relations between nouns: appositional relations or mutual appositional relations. The mutual appositional relations are peculiar to the majority of stylistically neutral double names. O. Peshkovskiy wrote about mutual relations between nouns. The differentiation of two relation types was done with the help of the semantic principle and predicate transformation method.

Abstract:
<em>In this article the author attempts to analyze the features of the syntactic structure of the diplomatic note text. The importance of this problem is due to the fact that the syntactic structure of Ukrainian diplomatic texts of the second half of the 50&rsquo;s - early 70&rsquo;s of the twentieth century was not subjected to detailed scientific research. The main aim is to determine the features of the syntactic structure of the diplomatic note text as one of the genres of diplomatic documents. The outlined goal involves the following tasks: to identify and characterize the varieties of revealed syntactical units, to investigate the ways of their representation and prevalence in the texts being studied. The results of the investigation prove that the syntactic structure of the diplomatic notes texts is composed of simple and complex syntactical units, which show equivalent realizability in the investigated material. Simple sentences are characterized by the predominance of two-component structures. Complex syntactic formations are implemented through two-component compound sentences of the attributive and object semantics, their predicative parts are characterized by heterogeneous complications. Compound and composite asyndetic sentences are represented by single samples and multi-component constructions with different types of connection are not detected. The predominance of complex syntactical units of elementary structure and two-component simple sentences testifies to the accuracy of the statement, the precision of the wording, and therefore indicates the dynamism of the syntactic structure of the text of the diplomatic note.</em>

Abstract:
In the realm of Senior High School (SHS) education, mastering syntactical structure competence in academic writing plays a pivotal role in fostering effective communication and intellectual growth. This study investigates the level of syntactical structure competence of Grade 11 students from STEM and HUMSS strands across three private schools in Santiago City, Philippines. The research adopts a descriptive-correlational design to describe syntactical characteristics and explore potential correlations among variables. The methodology involved administering a teacher-made test to assess syntactical knowledge in areas such as transitional devices, subject-verb agreement and verb tenses. Data collection included a stratified random sample of 258 students, ensuring representation across various strata. Results indicate varying levels of syntactical competence among students, with significant challenges observed in specific grammatical rules. Statistical analysis revealed correlations between syntactical competence and demographic factors, highlighting areas for targeted instructional interventions. Findings underscore the importance of tailored educational materials to address syntactical deficiencies effectively. In conclusion, this study contributes to understanding the nuances of syntactical structure competence in academic writing among SHS students. By identifying areas of weakness and strengths, educators can develop contextualized instructional materials that enhance syntactical skills, thereby improving students’ mastery of syntactical structure, academic writing proficiency and overall communication abilities.

Abstract:
In the proposed article the author attempts to analyze the peculiarities of the syntactic organization of the text of the diplomatic speech. The study of the syntactic structure of Ukrainian diplomatic texts of the second half of the 50&rsquo;s and early 70&rsquo;s of the twentieth century is important due to the fact that the syntax of diplomatic documents has not yet become the subject of a separate scientific investigation, besides, this period of the development of the official-business style in general and the diplomatic substyle in particular has not been studied. The purpose of the proposed article is to clarify the peculiarities of the syntactic organization of the text of the diplomatic speech as one of the types of the diplomatic documents. The outlined goal involves the following tasks: to identify and characterize all types of represented syntactical units, to explore the ways of their representation and prevalence in the studied works. The results of observations allow the researcher to say that in the syntactical structure of the studied texts there are both simple (two-member complete formations prevail) and composite (the majority of which are two-component complex structures) sentences, the specific feature of which is the presence of numerous complicating elements in their structure (most often homogeneous objects are used).

Abstract:
One of the most noticeable stylistic features of the syntactical structures of the Qur’anic separators is to consider syntax consistency before verbal homogeneity. This research is concerned with the Quranic separators that deviated from the origins in their syntactical structures from the point of view of structural semantics studies for modern structure. The research proved through the study that the relinquishment of the separators from the syntactical origins was not only for the verbal occasion but was first for the creative values and semantics purposes required by the Quranic context.

Abstract:
The paper focuses on the linguistic and narrative manifestations of linear time in rap lyrics compared to fairy tales. It aims at scrutinizing narrative time by the criteria of its acceleration, retardation and generalization, based on syntactical, narrative and pragmatic devices, interpreted from the viewpoint of their iconic isomorphism to the expressed temporal relations. Linear time in fairy tales is self-sufficient, forward-oriented and isolated from external time, while rap narratives are consistent with historical time and free in its movement from the past to the present, and vice versa. Time acceleration in rap occurs in the past or dramatic present and involves syntactical devices aimed either at reducing syntactic patterns by means of detached constructions, asyndeton, nominative sentences and ellipsis, which iconically reproduce the events’ change rate, or at increasing emotional power through climax, reproducing time “condensation.” Instead, fairy tale time is accelerated by lexical-semantic means. The slowed time in rap lyrics relies either on the redundancy of the syntactical pattern, provided by anaphora, repetitions, polysyndeton and enumerations, iconically reproducing the time extension, or on meaning implicatures and their corresponding violation of pragmatic maxims, foregrounded by enjambment, catachresis, aposiopesis and parenthetical phrases, semantically incoherent with the clause they must qualify. Instead, the time extension in a tale never relies on the inference of the deliberately implicated meanings and is expressed by formula and plot elements repetitions. In contrast to subsequent and monotemporal tale narratives, rap lyrics time is often marked by the violation of the temporal sequence, indicating psychological time, inherent in poetry in general.

Abstract:
Names are very significant in people’s lives for they reveal historical, social and cultural ideologies of a people. Place names can be said to be an under-utilized resource in historical, social and cultural contexts which, when fully exploited, has much to tell on what people should value. When linguistically analyzing these names, morphological and syntactical aspects usually merge. This study explored the ideological, morphological and syntactic perspectives of the linguistic landscape of Solusi University, specifically focusing on places on the campus, roads, hostels and other important buildings like the library and halls of residents. A critical internal analysis of name-structures was done. The researcher used qualitative research methodology where documents were studied and semi-structured interviews were administered to local elderly people to receive data on names at the university. Findings show that Solusi University names can be classified under the syntagmatic morpho-syntactic category. Again, the naming at the university brought out what can be termed contribution ideology. Most of places were given names of people who significantly contributed to the establishment and development of Solusi (first as a college and later as a university). The structure of these names reveals morphological and syntactical patterns that are worth to be studied. The study recommends people awareness of place names in their locales so that they appreciate what name contributors have done to humanity. People should also study place names for their aesthetic value as well as for their reference to humanity’s social history.

Abstract:
Aim. We aim to identify V. V. Mayakovsky’s main values by analyzing the syntactic features of his works.Methodology. Using the method of targeted sampling, we collected and analyzed the language material from Mayakovsky’s poetic texts. The structural-semantic method made it possible to establish how the poet’s value attitude to the described phenomena is reflected in the peculiarities of the syntactic structure of his works.Results. It is found that bisubstantive sentences are used to express the author’s values. The value attitude is also manifested in the use of characterizing appeals, different types of repetitions, and incentive sentences with optative semantics as an appeal. The most important value for Mayakovsky is love, which manifests itself in different aspects: love for the revolution, love for the country, and love to a woman. A specific feature of the poet’s manifestation of love is its active character.Research implications. The obtained results complement the theory of the functioning of syntactic units in a poetic text and the information about V. V. Mayakovsky’s idiostyle.

O componente implementado como exemplo neste trabalho trata a sintaxe da linguagem de programação C++.<br>Associated with each version control system there’s a comparison tool for extracting the differences between two versions of a document. These tools tend to make a comparison based on textual information from documents, in which the indivisible element is the line or word. But the content versioned is usually highly structured (for example, programming languages) and the use of this mechanism can disrespect syntactical limits and other properties of the document, becoming difficult to interpret what really changed. In this work we created a tool to identify differences between two versions of a document using a comparison mechanism based on the syntactic structure. Thus, it is possible to identify more precisely the relevant differences to the reader, reducing the effort to understand the semantics of the changes. The tool can support different types of documents by implementing components that interprets the desired syntax. The example syntax component implemented in this work deals with the syntax of the programming language C++.

Abstract:
Chapter I examines linguistic structures fundamental to most tasks of comprehension performed by humans. Chapter II proposes musical elements to be linguistic structures functioning within a musical symbol system (syntax). In this chapter, functional tonality is explored for systemic elements and relationships among these elements that facilitate tonal understanding. It is postulated that the listener's comprehension of these tonal elements is dependent on cognitive tasks performed by virtue of linguistic competence. Chapter III examines human information processing systems that are applicable both generally to human cognition and specifically to tonal comprehension. A pedagogy for listening skills that facilitate tonal comprehension is proposed in the fourth and final chapter and is based on information presented in preceding chapters.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the historical development of the expletive það in Icelandic, from the earliest texts to the present day. This development is set against the backdrop of Icelandic clause structure, with particular attention to verb-second, information structure and the left periphery. The study combines corpus linguistic data and quantitative techniques with theoretical analysis, conducted within Lexical Functional Grammar. I show that Icelandic underwent three syntactic developments in the period 1750-present and argue that these all reflect one overall change: the establishment of það as a structural placeholder for the topic position (the clause-initial prefinite position). I claim that það functions as a topic position placeholder in the earliest attested stage of Icelandic (1150-1350), but is restricted to a specific context: topicless subjectless constructions with a clausal object, where það has cataphoric reference. The three changes in the period 1750-present represent the establishment of this topic position placeholder in new contexts: (1) það generalises to all types of topicless subjectless construction, beyond those with a clausal object; (2) það emerges in presentational constructions (which inherently lack a topic), out-competing the earlier expletive form þar; (3) in cataphoric contexts with a clausal subject, það begins to transition from subject to topic position placeholder. The majority of these contexts exhibit at least a short period in which það - or alternatively þar - behaves like a subject. Icelandic thus exhibits the emergence of a topic position placeholder expletive from an earlier subject-like element. This shift towards prefinite expletives, which sets Icelandic apart from e.g. Mainland Scandinavian, happens relatively late in the diachrony (1750-present). Moreover, the Icelandic development challenges the standard claim in the literature on Germanic expletives, which assumes that subject expletives emerge from prefinite expletives.

Abstract:
This thesis takes as its starting point the proposal in Kayne (1994) that all syntactic structures are underlyingly spec-head-complement, and that they are right-branching. I will investigate this proposal taking data from English degree constructions, namely result clauses and comparatives. A comparison will be made between these constructions and English VPs, on which the majority of the phrase structure debate in the literature has been based. The evidence for left-branching and for right-branching in VPs will be considered, and similar evidence sought for degree constructions. We will see that VPs have a mostly right-branching structure, although left-branching structures are required in restricted circumstances. Also reason and manner adjuncts are argued to be right-adjoined to the VP node, a conclusion that is re-inforced by considering the constituency of VP adjuncts and some PP sequences noted by Jackendoff (1973). In degree constructions too, we argue that both left-branching and right-branching structures are necessary. My conclusion will be that Kayne's proposal is too strong, even though it is ideal from the perspective of a minimalist approach to syntax.

Abstract:
Deep machine learning has enjoyed recent success in vision and speech-to-text tasks, using deep multi-layered neural networks. They have obtained remarkable results particularly where the internal representation of the task is unclear. In parsing, where the structure of syntax is well studied and understood from linguistics, neural networks have so far not performed so well. State-of-the-art parsers use a tree-based graphical model that requires a large number of equivalent classes to represent each parse node and its phrase label. A recursive neural network (RNN) parser has been developed that works well on short sentences, but falls short of the state-of-the-art results on longer sentences. This thesis aims to investigate deep learning and improve parsing by examining how neural networks could perform state-of-the-art parsing by comparison with PCFG parsers. We hypothesize that a neural network could be configured to implement an algorithm parallel to PCFG parsers, and examine their suitability to this task from an analytic perspective. This highlights a missing term that the RNN parser is unable to model, and we identify the role of this missing term in parsing. We finally present two methods to improve the RNN parser by building upon the analysis in earlier chapters, one using an iterative process similar to belief propagation that yields a 0.38% improvement and another replacing the scoring method with a deeper neural model yielding a 0.83% improvement. By examining an RNN parser as an exemplar of a deep neural network, we gain insights to deep machine learning and some of the approximations it must make by comparing it with well studied non-neural parsers that achieve state-of-the-art results. In this way, our research provides a better understanding of deep machine learning and a step towards improvements in parsing that will lead to smarter algorithms that can learn more accurate representations of information and the syntax and semantics of text.

AbstractWe present a general framework to rank assumption in assumption-based argumentation frameworks (ABA frameworks), relying on their relationship to other assumptions and the syntactical structure of the ABA framework. We propose a new family of semantics for ABA frameworks that is using reductions to the abstract argumentation setting and leveraging existing ranking-based semantics for abstract argumentation. We show the suitability of these semantics by investigating a case study based on medical recommendations for patients with multiple health conditions and show that the relationship of the recommendations are enough to establish a ranking between the recommendations.

Abstract:
Recently there has been a strong interest in using semantic technologies to improve information management in the construction domain. Ontologies provide a formalized domain knowledge representation that provides a structured information model to facilitate information management issues such as formalization and integration of construction workflow information and data and enables further applications such as information retrieval and reasoning. SPARQL Protocol And RDF Query Language (SPARQL) queries are the main approaches to conduct the information retrieval from the Resource Description Framework (RDF) format data. However, there is a barrier for end users to develop the SPARQL queries, as it requires proficient skills to code them. This challenge hinders the practical application of ontology-based approaches on construction sites. As a generative language model, ChatGPT has already illustrated its capability to process and generate human-like text, including the capability to generate the SPARQL for domain-specific tasks. However, there are no specific tests evaluating and assessing the SPARQL-generating capability of ChatGPT within the construction domain. Therefore, this paper focuses on exploring the usage of ChatGPT with a case of importing the Digital Construction Ontologies (DiCon) and generating SPARQL queries for specific construction workflow information retrieval. We evaluate the generated queries with metrics including syntactical correctness, plausible query structure, and coverage of correct answers

Abstract:
Video captioning is the task of predicting a semantic and syntactically correct sequence of words given some context video. The most successful methods for video captioning have a strong dependency on the effectiveness of semantic representations learned from visual models, but often produce syntactically incorrect sentences which harms their performance on standard datasets. We address this limitation by considering syntactic representation learning as an essential component of video captioning. We construct a visual-syntactic embedding by mapping into a common vector space a visual representation, that depends only on the video, with a syntactic representation that depends only on Part-of-Speech (POS) tagging structures of the video description. We integrate this joint representation into an encoder-decoder architecture that we call Visual-Semantic-Syntactic Aligned Network (SemSynAN), which guides the decoder (text generation stage) by aligning temporal compositions of visual, semantic, and syntactic representations. We tested our proposed architecture obtaining state-of-the-art results on two widely used video captioning datasets. This is a short version of a paper recently published at a Computer Vision Conference. The complete reference has been redacted to fulfill the double-blind restriction.

Abstract:
This paper show how location named entity (LNE) extraction and annotation, which makes part of our named entity recognition (NER) systems, is an important task in managing the great amount of data. In this paper, we try to explain our linguistic approach in our rule-based LNE recognition and classification system based on syntactico-semantic patterns. To reach good results, we have taken into account morpho-syntactic information provided by morpho-syntactic analysis based on DIINAR database, and syntactico-semantic classification of both location name trigger words (TW) and extensions. Formally, different trigger word sense implies different syntactic entity structures. We also show the semantic data that our LNE recognition and classification system can provide to both information extraction (IE) and information retrieval(IR).The XML database output of the LNE system constituted an important resource for IE and IR. Future project will improve this processing output in order to exploit it in computerassisted Translation (CAT).

Abstract:
Use of syntactic foam as core material in the sandwich structured composites is increasing due to its higher compressive strength, damage tolerance and low moisture absorption compared to the open cell structured foams. Extensive microscopic examination of the syntactic foams tested under compressive and three-point bending conditions is undertaken in this study. The aim of the investigation is to determine the local fracture mode and correlate it with the microscopic structure of the material. Local stress states are identified in the material based on the microscopic fracture features. Syntactic foam tested in the study has resin to microballoons ratio of 1.52 by weight. Compression tests were conducted on the syntactic foam specimens having two different aspect rations, which were 0.4 and 0.91. Three-point bend tests were conducted on the sandwich structures containing syntactic foam as core material and glass fabric as the skin material.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents a new Computer-Aided Design (CAD) synthesis model which uses Plex Grammar as structural relationship descriptors and NURBS surface representation for constructing standard and non-standard solid entities. Here, the designer uses a syntactic design methodology for early topological and geometrical definition of the structure of concept alternatives resulting from the design process. This syntactic scheme provides the capability of describing a large set of complex structures by using a small set of simple entities. The recursive nature of the grammar and the hierarchical representation of the structure makes the description of complex structures simple and under the direct control of the designer. An object structure constructive tree is generated and subsequently translated into Plex Grammar production rules in order to form an Interconnection Matrix (ICM) expressing. The resulting Plex structure defined in the ICM expresses the topological information among entities which form the specific types of objects. By modifying the Plex grammar rules, various objects with different geometry and topology can easily be reconstructed. Compared to conventional solid modeling techniques, this approach provides more systematic object generation, easy manipulation and modification, control over congruity and the ability to represent sculptured shapes. Several examples of syntactic solid modeling applied in design synthesis will be presented for further usage in downstream applications.

Abstract:
In higher education subjects are traditionally taught in the form of lectures, where teachers are required by the curriculum to cover a certain amount of content in order to prepare their students for subsequent courses or examinations. It has been observed that people struggle when they are required to memorize a lot of new information, this phenomenon is explained by the working memory theory [1], and the negative effect is amplified when teaching subjects like programming, with the links between categories of information that has to be memorized not clearly identifiable by beginners. Lecture material for programming courses often mixes language-specific information (keywords, syntactical rules, ready solutions), mathematical basis for a given solution (type theory, algorithm theory), hardware-specific limitations (computer memory management) etc. This often has drastic consequences for students’ success in later courses that rely on material from previous courses [2]. This paper argues, that the process of learning is not simply about transferring knowledge from teacher to student. In fact, knowledge does not have to be “existing in an objective manner” for subsequent transmission, it can also be “built in a constructive manner by the learner" [3]. Within a traditional educational process software engineering students find themselves in situations where text is used to reason about other forms of text: typically code examples are shown first, then the code’s structure and syntax are explained. While there is intrinsic value in reading code written by experts, reading explanations of that code is much less effective than trying to reason about the structure and function of a program, and various features of a programming language. This paper will attempt to showcase several teaching techniques that don't utilize textual explanations (either partially or completely), putting forward the argument that non-linguistic presentations can be more effective in teaching, under certain conditions. Several methods of achieving this effect will be described, with the main goal of appealing to the student's ability for computational thinking.

Abstract:
The multiple schema for the classification of soils rely on differing criteria but the major soil science systems, including the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the international harmonized World Reference Base for Soil Resources soil classification systems, are primarily based on inferred pedogenesis. Largely these classifications are compiled from individual observations of soil characteristics within soil profiles, and the vast majority of this pedologic information is contained in nonquantitative text descriptions. We present initial text mining analyses of parsed text in the digitally available USDA soil taxonomy documentation and the Soil Survey Geographic database. Previous research has shown that latent information structure can be extracted from scientific literature using Natural Language Processing techniques, and we show that this latent information can be used to expedite query performance by using syntactic elements and part-of-speech tags as indices. Technical vocabulary often poses a text mining challenge due to the rarity of its diction in the broader context. We introduce an extension to the common English vocabulary that allows for nearly-complete indexing of USDA Soil Series Descriptions.

Thomas, Strobel. A contrastive approach to grammatical doubts in some contemporary Germanic languages (German, Dutch, Swedish). Goethe-Universität Frankfurt a.M., 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.21248/gups.72278.

Full text
Abstract:
Unquestionably (or: undoubtedly), every competent speaker has already come to doubt with respect to the question of which form is correct or appropriate and should be used (in the standard language) when faced with two or more almost identical competing variants of words, word forms or sentence and phrase structure (e.g. German "Pizzas/Pizzen/Pizze" 'pizzas', Dutch "de drie mooiste/mooiste drie stranden" 'the three most beautiful/most beautiful three beaches', Swedish "större än jag/mig" 'taller than I/me'). Such linguistic uncertainties or "cases of doubt" (cf. i.a. Klein 2003, 2009, 2018; Müller &amp; Szczepaniak 2017; Schmitt, Szczepaniak &amp; Vieregge 2019; Stark 2019 as well as the useful collections of data of Duden vol. 9, Taaladvies.net, Språkriktighetsboken etc.) systematically occur also in native speakers and they do not necessarily coincide with the difficulties of second language learners. In present-day German, most grammatical uncertainties occur in the domains of inflection (nominal plural formation, genitive singular allomorphy of strong masc./neut. nouns, inflectional variation of weak masc. nouns, strong/weak adjectival inflection and comparison forms, strong/weak verb forms, perfect auxiliary selection) and word-formation (linking elements in compounds, separability of complex verbs). As for syntax, there are often doubts in connection with case choice (pseudo-partitive constructions, prepositional case government) and agreement (especially due to coordination or appositional structures). This contribution aims to present a contrastive approach to morphological and syntactic uncertainties in contemporary Germanic languages (mostly German, Dutch, and Swedish) in order to obtain a broader and more fine-grained typology of grammatical instabilities and their causes. As will be discussed, most doubts of competent speakers - a problem also for general linguistic theory - can be attributed to processes of language change in progress, to language or variety contact, to gaps and rule conflicts in the grammar of every language or to psycholinguistic conditions of language processing. Our main concerns will be the issues of which (kinds of) common or different critical areas there are within Germanic (and, on the other hand, in which areas there are no doubts), which of the established (cross-linguistically valid) explanatory approaches apply to which phenomena and, ultimately, the question whether the new data reveals further lines of explanation for the empirically observable (standard) variation.
