Full textDid the Germanic languages fix the position of the adjective epithet before the substantive, did Albanian place it behind, then why French he would not make it ? This position in French being always variable, soon before and soon behind the substantive (of course, it is not valid for all), small problem pose to the French and to the French-speaking strangers. It is for it that we undertook such a research that is especially important that she/it also touches Albanian. From there, it comes out again that the comparative method is the one that predominated our research. A small preview on the source of these two languages appeared us indispensable. We also had need to really know the used terminology. The discovery of the ways of adjectives epithets, used to try to find the reasons of the positions different of this adjective in French as well as the concordances of Albanian on that point. These adjectives can be of the relational, of colour, of shape, of nominal or verbal origin ; they can be also monosyllabic or polysyllabic. Following their adherence in these divisions, their sometimes offer different senses in relation to the position that they occupy by the substantive. It appears us that the adverb also has a some role to play. Most adjectives epithets always have a fuzzy position in French, what makes that the anteposition and the postposition are always present, with a predominance rather important of the second. It doesn't prevent to have some adjectives epithets with a stationary place close to a substantive, either before, either behind ; coordinated juxtaposed either. All it made that this question has been called by specialists all domains, especially by the linguists. This problem has been landed of different sides. Of the linguists, of the old centuries, rather made it of a point of view unscientific, of others, more recent, from a structuralist or semantic view point, as well as from a stylistic and pragmatic view point. Does an acceptable solution exist then, to this phenomenon ? For us only one rule of after which we could choose the position of the adjective epithet in French doesn't exist. On the other hand, there are several choices. It is in relation to what we want to say, and in relation to the means that we use to say it, that these choices intervene in turns

Full textA predicate can take several different morphological forms. However, each form has its own usage and actualization. A predicative adjective (à la mode) is a polylexical entity which conforms to the definitional criteria of a simple adjective (élégant). Nonetheless, its actualization is far richer than what is possible with a simple adjective. It consists in a set of actuators which include light verbs, predicative verbs and adverbs. This work is a contribution to the ongoing effort of the LDI to build semantical classes for the predicates of . The attention given to the actualization of the predicative adjectives in order to design a typology of the state modification markers has allowed to revise the semantical classes of predicates already defined, to incorporate new entities and to link together predicates belonging to different semantical classes through the use of common aspectual markers

Full textThe analysis of the recurrences of the qualifying adjective in Chrétien de Troyes' work starts with a quantitative approach, meant to enable us to perform a qualitative examination of the unit announced by the title. The methodological principles applied are structural and comparative. On the one hand, it is a matter of isolating the adjective in the recurrent structures of Chrétien's poetical language and, on the other hand, of comparing – from the same viewpoint – his novels. Our research related to the functions of the qualifying adjective is the grammatical component of our work. What was at stake here was to prove the originality of this 12th century author, across the literary language of his time. The three aspects – namely the literary techniques, the use of highly recurrent adjectives and the symbolic dimensions of the adjectives – correspond to the leading ideas of the second part of the study. The dynamics of the Middle Ages mentalities is emphasized by the functioning of the qualifying adjective. Chrétien remains faithful to the techniques established by his predecessors and his originality is given by the sequence of units and by the creation of a different medieval world. The Appendixes are, according to us, indispensable for our critical approach, since they represent the corpus

Full textComputationnal linguistics have questioned former studies on fixation. Indeed, it has become essential to describe set expressions given their frequency in texts. This study sets about examining predicate adjectivals in this setting. Taking object classes as a model, a semantico-syntactic typology has been worked out for these sequences. The final objective of our analysis is to create an electronic dictionary of predicate adjectivals. This dissertation communicates three essential points: fixation of adjectivals, their definitions and their classification based on common distributional properties

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to examine the morphosyntactic and semantic properties of abstract nouns related to verbal and adjectival predicates. Since the nouns we examine are linked to verbal and adjectival predicates, the first part focuses on the question of aspectual properties in the nominal domain. We show that 'intensive abstract nouns' (Van de Velde 1995 and Flaux & Van de Velde 2000) constitute a unified aspectual class characterized by the feature [-DYNAMIC]. From the assumption that the stative feature common to these nouns allows a unified analysis, we propose a study relying on the idea that stative nouns are distinguished by their uses, and show that, in addition to a purely stative meaning, these nouns can also convey other information, in which they denote occurrences. The second part is dedicated to the syntactic behaviour of stative nouns, i.e. number and determination, but also adjectival modification. This enables us to identify two distinct morphosyntactic behaviours, that parallel the distinction between stative and occurrence understanding highlighted in the first part. On the one hand, in their property sense, these nouns have a behaviour similar to that of massive concrete nouns and qualify as relational nouns, i.e. they require an argument with which they enter into a predication relationship (at the syntactic level). On the other hand, in their occurrence sense, these nouns behave like concrete count nouns and are not inherently relational. To sum up, the analysis of stative nouns shows that they share semantic properties with certain types of verbal and adjectival predicates, as well as syntactic properties with various classes of concrete nouns

Full textThe argument put forward herein is that a quantitative parallel study of a linguistic phenomenon is bettersuited to the comparative study of two linguistic systems than the observation of the same phenomenon intranslation. The adjectival categories in English and French were studied in such a manner. Common criteriafor identification were first defined from a typological perspective. Then, in two bilingual corpora oftranslated texts of around 10,000 words each, around 1,800 NPs were manually inventoried and labeled ineach language either as having no attributive or predicative adjective, or one or more attributive adjectives, orone or more predicative adjectives, or both at the same time. Other contextual parameters (determiner, syntactic function of the NP, presence of prepositions or relative clauses in the NP, marks of intensity, semantic class of the noun) were manually inventoried as well. Two predominantly literary corpora of around5 million words in each language were collected using common criteria, and tagged with part of speechlabels. Regex searches were used to evaluate the predisposition for attributive or predicative function, andsensitivity to intensifiers of each adjective. The quantitative parallel study of adjectives revealedconvergences between English and French regarding the interactions with determiners, divergences in regardto prepositions, as well as a statistical correlation between the compatibility with predicative function andreceptivity to intensifiers. None of these tendencies

Full textThe aim of this study is the syntactic description and analysis of the verb constructions with an essential prepositional complement in Modern Greek, and the morphologically related predicative noun and/or adjective constructions. The theoretical and methodological framework is the lexicon-grammar (M. Gross 1968, 1975, 1981), based on Z. S. Harris' (1954, 1968) transformational grammar. The fact that we associate morphologically related predicative verbs, nouns and adjectives on the basis of their syntactic and semantic properties constitutes the originality of this work. The perspective of this enterprise is the construction of a general Modern Greek lexicon-grammar, in a similar way to the construction of the general French lexicon-grammar, carried out at LADL
Coiffet, Benoît. "Étude des emplois de l'adjectif invarié en français." Thesis, Toulouse 2, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018TOU20057/document.
Full textIn this study, we analyze verb combinations formed by placing an adjective to the right of a verb (such as "to eat organic" or "to buy French"). Placed in this position, the adjective is incidental to the verb from a syntactical point of view. However, as a defining element, it requires supporting elements, which are systematically absent from the statement. The absence of these semantical supports causes the adjective to be grammatically invariable, and for that reason, we speak of "invariable" adjectives. It can be maintained that, in this syntactical environment, an adjective finds itself in the place of another linguistic structure of which it is the prototypical function and with which it appears to be in competition: the adverb. It appears that, in this syntactical contest, an invariable adjective bears upon several elements. In certain cases, it can be a matter of elements belonging to the argumental structure of the verb, such as the unexpressed object. In other cases, it can involve elements that do not necessarily belong to the argumental structure (as in the combination "to bike + useful"). In this study, we postulate that it can thus be a complement describing the manner

Full textThe object of this work is to describe and explain the use of neuter adjectives as adverbs in Ancient Greek. It is based on a corpus comprising all archaic Greek poetry, from Homer to Pindar. Whenever possible, this data is compared with the data of the Classical and Hellenistic periods, and put into an Indo-European perspective. The examination of the morphology of adverbs in archaic Greek shows that the adverbs in ως are a recent development in Homer, whereas adverbial neuters seem to have been the default way of deriving an adverb from an adjective shortly before the archaic period. The semantics of the adverbs in ως displays typical features of a relatively new adverbial formation: in Homer, the suffix ως is only found in adverbs expressing manner. On the other hand, neuter adjectives used as adverbs are found in almost every adverbial function, which is the expected behaviour of a very productive adverbial formation. Finally, a syntaxic study of the adjectives in archaic Greek shows that the use of neuter adjectives as adverbs cannot be explained as a special case of internal accusative: this hypothesis is unable to account for numerous neuter adjectives used as adverbs, and implies that neuter adjectives could be used as substantives in singular without any restriction, which is not the case in Homer. This syntaxic study also sheds light on the development of the adverbs in ως: they first appeared in contexts where the subject controlled the process, and in contexts where the adverb is subject-oriented

Full textThe acquisition of attributive adjectives is subject to two major difficulties in French. First, adjectives express a property of a larger unit : children must be able to conceive an object as a whole and as a set of properties to use a NP with an adjective. Second, adjectives in French may occur before or after the noun. Alternation is a defining feature of the category but it is not random, and the constraints at play are numerous and preferential in nature. Also, although speakers are aware of this possibility, they tend to choose a fixed position in usage. These facts raise the question of whether the input allows children to construct the notion of attributive adjectives without a resort to innate linguistic knowledge. To answer this, I propose a comparative study of the productions of three children interacting with their family at two times of their development (T1 : 3 ;8, T2 : 4 ;6). I examine four phenomena concerning attributive adjectives (lexicon, placement, combination with other modifiers or adjectival dependents), and I compare adjectives with other nominal modifiers. All of these phenomena show the same evolution. At T1, the children use the most frequent construction in the adult data, with a high degree of lexical specificity. T2 shows the appearance of other constructions according to their order of frequency in the adult data. The construction from T1 is also used with a greater choice of lexical units, but within the same semantic classes. The children thus show sensitivity to quantitative information and a gradual abstraction of constructions by semantic analogy, which pleads for a progressive construction of the knowledge of adjectives based on the input data

Full textThis study aims at detailing the expressive effects produced by the use of the adjective clauses in Clarice Lispectors short stories. This objective was achieved by the selection of noun syntagms containing adjective clauses taken from the narratives found in the first two pieces of work of the authors short stories: Laços de família and A legião estrangeira. By focusing on the semanticstylistic analysis of the description of the characters, the adjective clauses presented themselves as one of the driving engines of the poetic prose, thus contributing to the construction of an introspective fictional world. This can be explained by the semantic relastionships, divided up into the adjective clause and the nuclear subject of the noun syntagm, among which there is and inventive production of images that demonstrate the characters subjectivity and build up a writing full of expressive resources such as the metaphor, the synecdoche and the antonomasy.

Full textThis research project consisted of showing that the place of the adjective depends not only on syntax but also on semantic and pragmatic constraints.A comparative analysis between a romance novel and a naturalist novel aims to show the importance of the place of the attributive adjective within a text, as this phenomenon allows each writer to produce certain effects on their readers which depend on the intention sought and, consequently, on the work studied. The objective of this thesis consists above all in showing that the adjective, depending on the place that it has, will not only allow for different types of precisions to be brought to the referent as designated by the substantive, but moreover to fulfil a macro-speech-act which constitutes a discourse act and also to transmit the speaker’s point of view and to convince the receiver. This phenomenon allows us to show that each literary discourse is unique and to explain the reasons for this

It deals, more precisely, with feeling verbs.Because of the classification's criterions which are not that explicit, our main target is to try tounderstand their syntactic and semantic parameters, then to refine it in order to make small classes, but sharing in common the feeling expressed. Nouns and / or adjectives, morphologically connectedto verbs, and sharing the same syntactic and semantic properties, will be integrated to them. Ouranalysis, based on a large attested Corpus, lead to predicates characterization of “nostalgia”, “regret”,“annoyance” and “astonishment”

Full textThe purpose of this study is the description and classification of the uses of the genitives attested in the Tocharian A and B published texts. A second purpose is comparison : the synchronic description of the genitive (a normative syntax of this case) is compared to the syntax of other Indo-European languages (so-called “classical languages”, such a Sanskrit, Latin and Greek). Three uses of the Tocharian genitive are investigated: the adnominal genitive, the adverbal genitive and the genitive after and adposition (pre- or postposition). The adnominal genitive behaves the same as the (traditionally reconstructed) Indo-European génitive. Nonetheless we emphasize two things : firstly, the Tocharian genitive cannot transpose a verbal phrase [vb + direct object] into a noun phrase. Secondly, very precise criteria rule the competency between genitive and derived adjectives. The uses of the Tocharian adverbal genitive are assumed by the dative in other Indo-European languages. The hypothesis of a syncretism is thus proposed. The study of the genitive after and adposition shows that some adverbial terms or some methods of forming are inherited. In the whole study, one always considers specific parameters of the Tocharian languages, which syntax is widely influenced by Sanskrit, as most part of the Tocharian material is translated from Sanskrit

Full textThe first part consists in a morphologic, linguistic and stylistic study of the English compound adjective. We draw a summary of what the existing literature has said over the years about the adjectival compound form, which allows us to question the morphology of the compound process and the way this phenomenon produces new items of language by associating two or more existing words. We interrogate the possibility of links between the different compound words, notably the connections between the English compound noun and the English compound adjective. This first part also draws boundaries between different processes of morphology; once the compounding process and the compound adjective are defined, we draw a list of the adjectival characteristics of the compound adjective. After having studied the theories surrounding the English compound adjective, we set a typology of the form. This typology is built using the 1,521 instances found in 8 pieces of literature. We then focus our attention on the five most common syntactic formats found in our corpus: each of them is analyzed syntactically and semantically, then stylistically by examining how the authors of our corpus make use of the English compound adjective. The second part of the dissertation proposes to study the English compound adjective and its accentuation. We investigate what has been said in the existing literature about the accentuation of compound forms, notably on the accentuation of compounds versus phrases and on compound nouns
