Full textWithin the framework of generative syntax, this dissertation offers an in-depth investigation of the syntax of the noun phrase (DP) in Mauritian Creole. In addition to the internal structure of complex DPs, it investigates the distribution of determinerless simplex DPs and of adnominal adjectives. It is shown that the referential properties of bare nouns and plural noun phrases containing the bann arise in part from their syntactic position and in part from the global content of the sentence. Other topics of investigation include adjectives, possessive DPs, relative clauses and free relatives. Diagnostic tests are provided to define Adjectives as a syntactic category in MC. New analyses are proposed for the third person pronoun so in possessive noun phrases, the complementizer ki, resumptive pronouns and the morphological word se-ki/sa-ki occurring in free relatives

Full textThis thesis is based on the theoretical framework of generative grammar and, more specifically, on its current model, barriers (chomsky; 1986). Modern greek is the first language of my interest but the hypotheses presented always take into account interlinguistic data and methods of comparative syntax. The structure which is examined in depth is the noun phrase but the analyses are extended to the sentence as well. The problems posed are as follows : (i) the internal structure of a non phrase, of an adjective phrase and of a small clause (ii) the status of the category agreement (iii) the predication theory (iv) the argument structure of the category n (v) the pronominal clitics (vi) the nature of zero elements x (vii) the implications of all these problems to conceptual questions concerning case theory, theta theory and bounding theory. Finally, i propose a more functional conception of transformational grammar based on a typology of movements (:a movement takes place for morphological reasons and is necessary in syntax while a' movement takes place for logical reasons and is necessary in lf

Full textNominals in Chinese show several interesting phenomena that fascinate linguists working on the generative grammar. Among these characteristics, die use of individual classifiers and the DE element are especially important. These questions have been discussed in existing literature, but one can hardly find studies which cover the whole range of phenomena in question in order to propose a coherent solution in formai syntax. This dissertation intends to carry out such a research, by paying a special attention to the numeral construction and the role of die DE element in the XP-DE-YP construction among other issues. This dissertation is grounded within the generative grammar framework. More specifically, die phenomena will be studied in the "linearization" perspective in Kayne (1994)'s sense, fundamental work that considers the relation between linear order and syntactical hierarchy. The research is organized as follows: die Chapter I is dedicated to a complete presentation of different linearization theories and their evolutionary path. This part will not put emphasis on 'Chinese data in order to keep a more general and theoretical background; die Chapter II is concerned about die numeral construction, the main tasks are to find an appropriate syntactical representation of the construction and to account for phenomena that are semantics-related such as the distinction of count and massif nouns and the interpretation of singular and plural; die Chapter III will focus on the DE element and the three following structures- complementary propositions, deverbals and relatives; the Chapter IV will investigate die syntax of non-nominal syntactical categories in Chinese in order to complete the studies in the Chapters II and III. Some conclusions regarding the linearization previously obtained will also be reconsidered more profoundly within die Minimalist Program framework

Full textThis thesis focuses on a particular aspect of the way the noun phrase operates in latin: the use of genitive (in plautus and terence). An analysis of the datives of "possession" and "sympathy" casts a doubt on the existence of strictly "possessive" uses: in point of fact, the genitive reveals a subordination in which the word in the genitive designates a "particular term". Comparing the genitives and ablatives of "quality" then makes it possible to identify certain classifying uses. The study of the genitives of "measurement" finally suggests to distinguish an operation of quantification and an operation of partition. A new mode of genitive classification is subsequently proposed, which is based on the referential properties of the terms under review. A general reflexion on the use of the cases and the nature of syntactic functions in latin concludes the study

Full textThe topic of this study is the composition, which is very important in area "natural language processing", where the identification of linguistics’ units bigger than a word is needed in this work, composition is defined as a modification of syntactic properties of at least one of the components. Properties of compounds beginning with a preposition are then considered. The items are consequently automatically classified. Relational data analysis (Condorcet criterion) allows us to establish a statistical classification showing they are adverbs, which can be characterized with a positive correlation between syntax and semantic on the one hand, and between the compound's frozenness and their integration into phrases on the other hand

Full textThe major goal of this thesis was to study the role of morphosyntactic gender cues during syntactic processing. The grammatical incongruency effect observed in a lexical decision task with grammatical priming ( i. E. Word recognition is longer when the target noun is preceded by an incongruent, prime, la (fem) bureau (masc) ) has been used as a paradigm to explore morphosyntactic processing within noun phrase. The first aim of the thesis was to assess the syntactic nature of this process. This was made by showing that the incongruency effect was only observed when a syntagmatic relationship was described between the prime an the target (ex. Between two nouns). In addition, it has been shown that the incongruency effect was mediated by a grammatical processing of gender and did not simply reflect form-based statistics. The second aim was to specify the properties of this process. It appeared to be independent of semantic features (natural gender vs arbitrary gender) and morpho-phonological information carried by word endings. Furthermore, the use of longer noun phrases allowed us to emphasize the role of the determiner and the syntactic unit in syntactic processing. The third aim was to study gender processing in two different groups : elementary school children and Williams Syndrome subjects (WS). For the children, an incongruency effect was observed from the third grade. For the WS, it has been show that computational operations were spared in WS whereas retrieval of specific gender information seemed impaired

Full textWe study the syntax of the noun phrase (NP) and constructions where the argument of the noun appear out of the NP in Korean and in French. The noun is the head of an NP without postposition (pp) but the latter is the head of the phrase it marks, pp take an NP as complement and share most of its features, including its category. They are divided into three types : pp with oblique case value, pp with marked value in the feature MARK, and pp with semantic and discoursive meaning. In Korean and in French, noun's non saturated argument may appear in local sentences or be bounded to the NP modified by the relative or in the cleft position. We assume that the verb inherits the argument of the noun for the first case. We propose to analyze also unbounded dependencies by argument inheritance. In fact, they observe same constraints as the realization in local sentences. In our analysis, the verb inherits the argument of the noun, and realizes it in its domain or propagates it to the upper domain for an unbounded dependency
Gouguet, Jules. "La réduplication syntaxique et la structure du groupe verbal en mandarin, en anglais et en autres langues." Paris 7, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008PA070085.
Full textThe first part of this dissertation studies the complex structure of the Mandarin verb phrase. The syntax of arguments and postverbal adverbials in Mandarin has been the object of much research, but no analysis has yet been able to account for all the data. Part of the difficulty owes to the practice of analysing postverbal adverbials as verb complements. A uniform analysis becomes available once this hypothesis replaced by one where adverbials are specifiers of aspectual projections internal to the extended verb phrase. The analysis can be extended to cover Mandarin resultative verb compounds as well as the reduplicative phenomenon known as "the verb copying construction". The second part of this dissertation seeks to establish how and why complex syntactic movement, as is proposed for the verb copying construction, can give rise to reduplication. A theory of the phonological interpretation of movement chains is proposed which allows for reduplicative movement to be distinguished from remnant movement in derivational terms, particularly based on phase theory. This new theory is applied to cases of reduplication and remnant movement in several languages, and notably to predicate fronting in English, for which a new analysis is proposed
Avezard-Roger, Cécile. "Description syntaxique du syntagme verbal en breton : approche dynamique." Paris 5, 2004. http://www.theses.fr/2004PA05H004.
Full textThis piece of work consists in a syntactic description of how verbs function in Breton. It relies on functional linguistics and uses the theories developed by André Martinet and his followers. This study of the verb is organised around four main axes. First, in the chapter dedicated to predication, the distinction between connective syntax and nucleus syntax is established and a list of the linguistic means used in Breton is presented within the frame of connective syntax. The different verb units constituing the verbal system are then singled out. The opportunity is seized to take a stand on some difficult point linked to the verb such as "verbal particles" (traditional terminology), the status of the imperative form and the identification of classes of parasynthems in Breton. The third part deals with the various syntactic constructions with a verbal nucleus existing in Breton and presents a typology of the "verb structures" in niew of composition of the verb phrase. The last chapter is devoted to syntactic functions. This analysis is based on an oral corpus collected from speakers from several areas which allows to draw dynamic components related to dialect variation

Full textThis PHD thesis offers a synchronic description of Reunion Creole's determiner system as well as an analysis of the interpretation of its noun phrases. The thesis includes new data from two kinds of sources: a small collection of oral corpora, and grammaticality/felicity judgments. We investigate the distribution of the different kinds of NP, the morphosyntactic status of pre- and postnominal elements, the number system, and the expression of definiteness in Reunion Creole. We analyze a distinction operated by three different forms (bare NPs; lo+N;N+-la), that endorse distinct roles in a definiteness split similar to the one described by Ebert (1971) and we explain this split within Löbner’s (1985 ; 2011; 2015) theory of definiteness

Full textDid the Germanic languages fix the position of the adjective epithet before the substantive, did Albanian place it behind, then why French he would not make it ? This position in French being always variable, soon before and soon behind the substantive (of course, it is not valid for all), small problem pose to the French and to the French-speaking strangers. It is for it that we undertook such a research that is especially important that she/it also touches Albanian. From there, it comes out again that the comparative method is the one that predominated our research. A small preview on the source of these two languages appeared us indispensable. We also had need to really know the used terminology. The discovery of the ways of adjectives epithets, used to try to find the reasons of the positions different of this adjective in French as well as the concordances of Albanian on that point. These adjectives can be of the relational, of colour, of shape, of nominal or verbal origin ; they can be also monosyllabic or polysyllabic. Following their adherence in these divisions, their sometimes offer different senses in relation to the position that they occupy by the substantive. It appears us that the adverb also has a some role to play. Most adjectives epithets always have a fuzzy position in French, what makes that the anteposition and the postposition are always present, with a predominance rather important of the second. It doesn't prevent to have some adjectives epithets with a stationary place close to a substantive, either before, either behind ; coordinated juxtaposed either. All it made that this question has been called by specialists all domains, especially by the linguists. This problem has been landed of different sides. Of the linguists, of the old centuries, rather made it of a point of view unscientific, of others, more recent, from a structuralist or semantic view point, as well as from a stylistic and pragmatic view point. Does an acceptable solution exist then, to this phenomenon ? For us only one rule of after which we could choose the position of the adjective epithet in French doesn't exist. On the other hand, there are several choices. It is in relation to what we want to say, and in relation to the means that we use to say it, that these choices intervene in turns
Marcu, Tiberiu. "Constructions temporelles réduites en français moderne." Toulouse 2, 2006. http://www.theses.fr/2006TOU20069.
Full textThis thesis proposes the analysis of a category of structures that the author terms “reduced temporal constructions”, which, under certain syntactic and semantic conditions, play a role in the temporal arranging of the discourse. The main characteristics of these structures are: the subordination character, the lack of the verb for a conjugated tense, the secondary predication, the possibility of being paraphrased by a “complete” temporal clause, the fact that they refer to a stage within a temporal range. Detachment in front of the main clause (very often at the beginning of the complex sentence) is also a defining feature of delimiting the class. The constructions in view are divided into two classes: 1. Constructions based on preposition plus noun syntagm; 2. Detached constructions based on past participle, noun, adjective, adverbial elements of spatial localisation, present participle or gerund

Full textThis study is an investigation into noun complementation with a prepositional phrase in contemporary English (for instance "a liking for chocolate"). This subject has been little studied so far, as linguists have been more interested in prepositional verbs, and in the distinction between prepositions and adverbial particles. The purpose of this work is to try to explain why a particular preposition is used after a noun. Is the choice of a preposition arbitrary or does it follow logical rules? We mainly focus on semantic studies, both of the head noun and the preposition, in order to find some patterns of semantic coherence extending over the whole set of occurrences. Moreover, what links can be established between verb complementation and noun complementation? To what extent does the noun inherit its prepositional complementation from the corresponding verb? Indeed, the prepositional phrase can sometimes be common to both verb and noun, but when the preposition differs or when there is no verb corresponding to the noun, then how to account for the selection of the preposition? The thesis also aims at investigating prepositions themselves, showing that some of them seem to incorporate others, in order to reach a higher degree of abstraction. The diachronic and synchronic analyses carried out in this work lead us to study more thoroughly between and over, but also of, which remains a very original preposition. The purpose here is to show that "preconstruction" is a key notion in the study of prepositions

Full textThe article in French constitutes one of the most important sources for learners of French as a foreign language. Regarded as a meaningless morpheme transmitting only few information, the article is often treated slightly in traditional and school grammar, but actually it represents considerable values in terms of "semantics" and "referential". The use of the French article was the subject of many researches (the work of Guillaume on the question is the most famous trace). Based on syntactic and semantic approaches, more "traditional", we propose a new approach - "semantico-referential" - which makes it possible to better account for the operation of the French article, in particular, for the operation of the article in a noun phrase : "N1 + de + N2"

Full textThe grammatical categories of the noun phrase and operations of determination are essential characteristics of languages. When compared with one another, the latter offer obvious differences and similarities. How should those differences and similarities be treated when one passes from one language to the other ? In order to answer the question this dissertation provides a contrastive study of the noun phrase in French and in Vietnamese and an analysis of the translation problems that have risen from a corpus of students'works and official translations. The study led me to defend a functional theory of translation, in which communication is the essential objective between the co-speakers. In the light of this theory, a pedagogy of tutorial guidance has been developed with a view to obtaining better learning results

Full textThe goal of this dissertation is to provide a description of the noun phrase and to correlate interpretation and morphosyntax. Traditional grammars of Albanian distinguish between two surface forms of the noun: a "determined" form (e shquar) and a determinerless/ "undetermined" form (e pashquar). Two observations may be made from the data (both drawn from attested texts or discourse, and elicited), namely, that contrary to expectation, a some "undetermined" noun phrases are open to "definite" readings and (ii) that, to some extent, the distribution of "undetermined" noun phrases corresponds to that of bare nouns in other languages. The analysis of Albanian determinerless noun phrases as bare nouns sheds some light on their distributional and interpretative properties. The present study is also concerned with the following topics: (i) the interpretations available for definite DPs — weak definite, strong definite and generic (ii) demonstrative noun phrases (iii) the ‘connective article’, which I analyse as an agreement marker signalling that an inflected noun phrase has raised to the left of some modifier

Full textThis thesis is a first step in syntactic analysis of noun-phrases within pronominal approach. Through a systematical observance of all "nom1 de nom2" forms in transcribed records of spoken french, this thesis leads to a formal classification of thirty-four kinds of non-phrases. For these thirty-four kinds of noun-phrases, syntactic analysis sets up "lexicalization progresses": each "nom1 de nom2" receives an analysis according to its equivalence with pronouns; the whole ordered set of pronouns shapes a "lexicalization progress" from the most general pronoun to final lexicon. This thesis deals with many fields: quantification, possession, predicative nouns, verbal locutions, approximation. . . In a further stage, the different kinds of noun-phrases are grouped into five syntactico-semantic classes. For actual noun-phrases (i. E. "nom1 de nom2" appearing in right syntactic position), we have to distinguish between three possibilities: we have a purely nominal behaviour, with a neutralizable nominal head (ex: j'ai visite la cuisine de bocuse celle de bocuse celle-la); we have a rather verbal behaviour, with a directing noun and its valency (ex: j'ai attendu l'arrivee des deux navires l'arrivee de quoi, de ceux-la. . . Celle-la); and we finally have a complex-nominal behaviour

Full textThe gender (masculine, feminine) appears, in french, like a classification system. This system (includes two modalities: one sexual gender, for example: brother-sister and one conventional gender, for example: chair (feminine) or seat (masculine). Boys and girls are of the first modality differently, girls using the sexual language semantic and boys using a morphological analysis. However, whatever the sex, the subject uses an analysis of the final syllabe in order to determine the formal gender, for example : the sun (masculine) - the moon (feminine). In addition, where is an analysis of an item in relation to its adjectives, for example, or others words within the lexique when its gender is unknown. The study of the use of the gender in a deteriorated state, confirms these hypotheses and the equality of the two masculine and feminine categories. With the nominal substantive, the irregularities appear when the numbers increase. The study of the syntax modality and the lexical morphology implies an insertion within a tree of derivations; the higher the numbers position and the more superficial the gender, an experimentally confirmed hypothesis. The studies in aphasia renforces the method of understan ding the effects of the gender and number, and in explaining the method of determining the differents features of the gender

Full textIn Mandarin Chinese, as in French, nominal determiners (demonstrative and numeral) precede in general the noun. French requires the presence of the article, a grammatical category that is not found in Mandarin Chinese. Rather, in Mandarin Chinese, quantification is carried out through the presence of noun classifiers. As for nominal morphology, in Mandarin Chinese, an isolating language, nouns are preferably formed through the composition of different semantic features. By contrast, in French, considered as mainly flexional, only the nominal root holds the semantic unit. In French, determiner and noun agree in gender and number, whereas in Mandarin Chinese, that does not distinguish gender, number is expressed by noun classifiers. Understanding these differences is essential to the acquisition of these two languages. In order to facilitate the understanding of the functions of these grammatical phenomena, this research proposes accurate analyses and explanations that allow second language learners to overcome more effectively the difficulties of nominal determination

Full textThis work deals with the linguistic representation problem of n de n predicative groups in contemporary franch in the theoretical and methodological framework of lexicon-grammar (m. Gross 1975; z. Harris 1976, 1991). The solution adopted in lexicon-grammar (g. Gross 1987, 1988) establishes that thousands of n de n groups are compound words and that they must receive the same lexicographic treatment as the simple words. The analysis of linguistic facts in the harrissan theoretical framework, on which lexicon-grammar is based, shows that the predicative groups with the carrier verb avoir present various relations of equivalence with others constructions, that their components can receive modifyers and that the first noun of the group is the predicative nucleus which selects the arguments of the sentence. This analysis is correlated of the studies realized on compound words : there is not any formal criterion which permits to identify, in the n de n group set, the groups which are compounds nouns. This identification is just based on personal judgements. We licence in this manner a new documentary research program which consists of recognizing, in the n de n groups set, the groups which incorporate an equivalence relations sub-system. This set will receive a lexico-syntactic treatment and not just a lexical one. The others will be inserted in the dictionnary and in the lexicon-grammars with precaution, because this relational sub-system experts a systematic pression on the language which can result its reanalysis as nominal groups

Full textThe analysis of pronominal anaphora in "N1 de (dét. ) N2" constructions requires on the one, hand, a study of anaphora and of relations supported by "de", and on the other hand, an examination of the referential functionning of preposi tional construc-tions. To be understood, these anaphoric relations call linguistic, cognitive, si tuational and contextual information. An approach limited to' syntactic and semantic arguments does not allow to discuss all phenomena classified in this category of relations. Furthermore referent identification of linguistic antecedent recognition in a "Nl de (dét. ) N2" is related to notions of accessibility and salience

Full textIn Natural Language Processing, there is many works in Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD). It's explained in two points : first, this task is used in many application software, second, there is no agreement for the method. We present a new model based on theory of dynamic construction of meaning. Polysemy is in the centre of this theory. This model provide a geometric representation of meaning based on a continuum. We develop a new type of semantic classes of lexical units which depend of context

Full textThis research is devoted to the study of idiomatic expressions whose nucleus is a verb in a Berber dialect : Kabyle. After having defined and identified the idioms among all types of fixed forms, their analysis followed, it concerned notably the verbal idioms which has a constituent being an item referring to the human body. The review of the idiomatic expressions needed a study on the syntactic, semantic, pragmatic and rhetoric levels. On the syntactic level, we determined a list of the grammatical functions fulfilled by the nouns which concern the the human body parts. This was followed by the categorization of the idioms according to their formal structure and the grammatical function of the item that is subsequent to the verb phrase. Then, the idiomatic expressions were subjected to checking test of their change possibilities. On the semantic level, there was a classification of the idiomatic expressions according to the criteria of the idiom's motivation of global meaning in relation to the meaning of its separate constituents. Ensued the establishing of the pejorative or ameliorative values linked to the effects of meaning of each idiom, lastly the lexico-semantic analysis of the constituents. The pragmatic analysis is devoted to the conditions that govern the use of the idiomatic expressions in the extra linguistic environment as well as their functions. As to the rhetoric analysis, it is composed of the various phases linked to the use of stylistics (metaphor, metonymy, synecdoc) that bind the nouns of the human body parts. Lastly, the work ended with an inventory of the stylistic functions that are fulfilled by tropes in speech

Full textThis thesis puts forward a systematic description of complex noun phrases containing the relators ney, rɔbah or absence of relator (0). Generally regarded as quasi-synonyms, the difference between these relators is associated with a registry problem. Starting from the assumption that each relator has its own semantic identity (related to their lexical value in the case of neyand nbah) that cannot be reduced to a relationship of possession or ownership, this study seeks to show that the choice of a relator can be associated to specific constraints (syntactic, semantic and pragmatic). Each relator is subject to a chapter. Each chapter is devoted to the systematic description of the data illustrating the diversity of uses and values of each type of noun phrase followed by a rational representation of the observed phenomena. At the end of each chapter, we propose a general synthesis of different values. The case of competition between ney, rɔbah and gare discussed in Chapter V (conclusion)

Full textThis PHD dissertation specifically examines the determiner without nominal rection in contemporary Spanish. It contains three parts in which the occurrences of nounless nominal groups are studied. We first compare Spanish to four other languages (French, Italian, Portuguese and English) to show that Spanish can express certain things in a way the other four languages cannot. Then, we focus on Spanish itself and determine four kinds of grammatical categories that can be preceded with the definite article. Our main goal is to understand how a nounless nominal group can emerge with a nominal value, with non-nominal categories replacing the noun. We aim at finding what element gives the nominal value to those nominal groups and at testing what roles the article plays in the nominalization of those elements. Such a work first consists in detecting the cases of ellipses and the cases where the article has a pronominal value, so that those cases are eliminated from the scope of this study. The second part studies the grammatical categories introduced by the article (adjective, infinitive, subordinate clause and prepositional phrase). Restrictions are detected by tests opposing utterances to one another. It is shown that the determiner does not give any nominal feature to the construction and that syntax mainly depends on semantic criteria. We explain the utterance classes, their grammaticality and ungrammaticality through obligatory semantic features. The third part proposes to insert the hypothesis under DP hypothesis (Determinant Phrase) and we propose a [class] feature under D head, which enables to give a nominal value to the sentence with the help of a grammatical category bearing specific semantic features

Full textThe nominal group in French is structured around the noun which is a center of the group; its insertion in the phrase is made with an article. The noun can also acquire predeterminants and postdeterminants which represent the supplementary determination of the noun. The new grammatical logic distributes of the determinants of the noun in quantitative strict, numerical and bipolar; in characterized strict numerical and possessive and in combined quantitative and characterized strict, possessive and demonstrative. The nominal group in basaa is also structured like the one in French; but it is not articulate. It is the same in language like in phrase. The stem is always prefixed to one of thirteen different prefixes of classes. Apart from determinants bipolar quantitative and possessive characterized, the basaa language have like the French language determinants strict, numerical quantitative, combined quantitative and characterized strict, possessive and demonstrative. Those determinants are called dependent nominal in relation with the independent nominal: the nouns. The system of agreement in these langages. .

Full textThis study proposes a grammatical description of the noun phrase (NP) of the English-lexicon Creole of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (VinC). VinC, which coexists with its superstrate, is at present linguistically unaccounted for. As a result, prior to the syntactic analysis, we reflect on the process of creolisation that could account for the origin of VinC, based on historical documents. We then provide a phonological analysis, which gives a concise idea of the phonemic and accentual features of VinC. The alphabet recommended, is intended to render the transcription of the examples provided in the study conform to the phonological nature of the creole. The grammatical description itself, covered in three chapters, hinges on the functionalist and structuralist frameworks, as it seeks to describe the syntactic relations existing between the constituents of the NP. Firstly, we study the features of the head of the NP, i. E. The noun and its substitutes. We then analyse the left expansions of nouns, i. E. Determiners as well as modifiers. The penultimate chapter offers a unified analysis of the post-modifiers of the VinC NP, i. E. Relative clauses, complementizer clauses, prepositional clauses and noun complements. The final chapter focuses on the concept of reference and how it influences the choice of definite and indefinite determiners. Here, we advocate an analysis based on the theory of familiarity and degree of identification from the hearer's point of view that could account for definiteness and specificity: grammatical-semantic notions that often fall short in their analysis of the null determiner
