Abstract:
Abstract Two Galician poems (one from each of two collections: Cantares Gallegos and Follas novas) by Spain’s most renowned poetess are examined in this critical essay, which includes translations into English, Spanish and Catalan together with an analysis of both poems and a commentary on each with a discussion of such technicalities as metre, rhyme, imagery, lexis and syntax insofar as they aff ect the end-product in each case. The essay discusses the linguistic features of Galician as a preliminary to the appreciation of the poems, draws attention to Rosalia’s statements on her art and work

Abstract:
The language of the traditional Galician songbook of the nineteenth century can be characterised as reflecting a popular and colloquial variety of the language, this due to the way in which these anonymous literary texts were generated and transmitted throughout the Modern Age. However, within this markedly popular register fine examples of grammatical constructions and other usages which can be found, while wholly genuine and legitimate in terms of their place in the language, have been relegated to secondary status or indeed have fallen into disuse in Galicia due to the influence of Castilia

Abstract:
An important line of research within a generative, formal approach to syntax in the early 21st century has centered on exploring phenomena related to the interface between syntax and other linguistic modules in human language. In this paper, we review the notion of interfaces and how they have been viewed within formal theoretical approaches to monolingual and bilignual competence and language acquistion, noting their relevance as they relate to language acquisition and bilingualism in the context of Galicia (Spain). We review a selection of Noun Phrase (NP) structures that implicate a syntact

In this paper I argue that the position and realization of subjects in adverbial non-finite clauses in Italian, Spanish, Galician, and European Portuguese can provide valuable insight into the licensing conditions for pro and postverbal subjects in finite clauses in these pro-drop languages. I first provide evidence that Tense and Agreement constitute separate syntactic heads in these languages, as argued by Belletti (1990) among others, and also apply this analysis to non-finite clauses in Spanish, Galician, and Portuguese. I will also argue, after analyzing the syntactic variation exhibited

Galician is a minority language spoken in Galicia, an autonomous region in northwestern Spain. This paper will provide some basic data on the evolution of the sociolinguistic situation of Galician. It will consider the dynamics of change and revitalisation of the language and will examine the linguistic policies that underpin them. In 1981, the Statute of Autonomy of Galicia was approved, establishing the co-official status of Galician. In 1983, the Galician Parliament passed the Law on the linguistic normalisation of Galicia, which laid the ground for the language

Previous accounts of preverbal subjects in Spanish and European Portuguese (EP) in the literature have debated the syntactic position of these elements. According to some analyses, preverbal subjects are canonical arguments appearing in an A-position (e.g. Goodall 2001, 2002; Suñer 2003 for Spanish; Duarte 1997; Costa 2004 for EP). Other analyses propose that preverbal subjects are non-arguments appearing in a left-peripheral - perhaps CLLD - A'-position (e.g. Uribe-Etxebarria 1990, 1995; Ordóñez & Treviño 1999 for Spanish; Barbosa 1996, 2000 for EP). Recent language policy and planning research reveals how policy-makers endorse the interests of dominant social groups, marginalise minority languages and perpetuate systems of sociolinguistic inequality. In the Castilian-dominated Galician linguistic landscape, this study examines the rise of grassroots level actors or agents (i.e. parents, family members, and other speakers of minority Galician) who play a significant role in interpreting and implementing language policy on the ground. AbstractThis chapter reports on the current state of Language Technology (LT) for Galician. The main conclusion is that there are a limited number of resources, products, and technologies for the Galician language with text-based technologies and services being more mature than those based on speech processing. We start with general facts about Galician, followed by a high-level qualitative description of the LT situation for Galician, and conclude with recommendations for bridging the gap between Galician LT with Spanish and the other co-official languages of Spain.

Abstract:
The popularization of Large Language Models (LLMs), especially with the development of conversational systems, makes mandatory to think about facilitating the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to everyone. Most models neglect minority languages, prioritizing widely spoken ones. This exacerbates their underrepresentation in the digital world and negatively affects their speakers. We present two resources aimed at improving natural language processing (NLP) for Galician: (i) a Llama 3.1 instruct model adapted through continuous pre-training on the CorpusNós dataset; and (ii) a Galician version
