While individual jurisdictions have crafted their own solutions to questions of definition, procedure, and disposition, a range of specific issues have come to the fore requiring further analysis and resolution. These include the permissibility or otherwise of compulsorily medicating incapacitated defendants to restore competence, the desirability of disaggregating the unitary test for fitness, the movement from cognition to decision-making capacity a

Abstract This book provides a thorough exploration of embodied carbon issues, focusing on the inequities between the Global North and South. It argues that the greatest obstacles to effective global cooperation on embodied carbon policies are persistent global inequality, ongoing development needs in the South, and imbalanced responsibility for carbon emissions. The book challenges the conventional emphasis on operational carbon, highlighting the significant impact of embodied carbon—greenhouse gas emissions from the production, transportation, and assembly of building materials. The sources of useful versus harmful policies in addition to the implications of the latter are discussed. Perhaps the most common source of harmful policies has been heavier emphases placed on punishment by politicians and court actors who are further removed from the prison experience. Common denominators of policies that have generally improved the welfare of prisoners and/or prison staff, on the other hand, include grounding in an increasingly humanitarian view of offenders, a growing

The purpose of inclusive insurance is to build the financial resilience of underserved market segments, such as small businesses, smallholder farmers, and low-income households. This goal can only be achieved if schemes are profitable or financially sustainable. From research and interviews with some of today’s leading inclusive insurers, this paper unpacks what it takes for inclusive insurance programmes to be financially sustainable and, based on their experiences, synthesizes a best-practice tool: checklists of actions that can be taken to improve financial sustainability. The supply of the chemical elements is key to their contribution to alleviating these pressures. Most synthetic and radioactive elements are not available in sufficient supply to contribute in this. Scope Absorption of hydrogen generated by corrosion of steel in wet hydrogen sulfide (H2S) can have several effects, depending upon the properties of the steel, the characteristics of the environment, and other variables. One adverse effect observed in pipeline steels is the development of cracks along the rolling direction of the steel. Cracks on one plane tend to link up with cracks on adjacent planes to form “steps” across the thickness. The cracks can reduce the effective wall thickness until the pipe is overstressed and ruptures. Cracking is sometimes accompanied by surface blistering. Se

Within the context of NLTS, phenomenological modeling goes beyond phase space reconstruction to extract equations governing real-world system dynamics from a single or multiple observed time series. They can be used to characterize the dynamics of variable interactions; for example, whether an incremental increase in one variable drives a marginal increase/decrease in the growth rate of another,

Native temperate grasslands are Australia’s most threatened ecosystems. Grasslands have been eliminated from across much of their former extent and continue to be threatened by urban expansion, agricultural intensification, weed invasion and the uncertain impacts of climate change. Research, however, is showing us new ways to manage grasslands, and techniques for restoration are advancing. The importance of ongoing stewardship also means it is vital to develop new strategies to encourage a broader cross-section of society to understand and appreciate native grasslands and their ecology.
