Three series of alkoxy substituted tolans p-X-C(_6)H(_4)-C≡C-C(_6)H(_4)-p-OC(_n)H(_2n+1) [X = H (series 1), CH(_3) (series 2), OCH(_3) (series 3)] with varying chain length were synthesized by Pd/Cu-catalysed Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions of terminal alkynes and iodoarenes, crystal structures and phase behavior of three series of tolans. Twenty-eight of the tolans were structurally characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Hydrogen peroxide oxidation of acyclic and cyclic N,N'-dialkylthioureas furnished S,S-dioxides in agreement with computational predictions. Some s,S,S-trioxides were also isolated. In the first results chapter, the first organocatalyst for the carbonyl-ene reaction was discovered and found to give high conversion using 1,3-bis(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)thiourea. Various carbonyl and alkene precursors were examined in the ene reaction in both catalysed and uncatalysed reactions. Quinones are widespread compounds in nature, where they play key roles due to their biological activity. Quinones have proven their usefulness in the field of synthetic chemistry, being excellent oxidants and electrophiles. In this thesis work, two example of efficient exploitment of quinones as electrophiles are presented. In one case, an asymmetric organocatalyzed biaryl couling is presented, a reaction which proceeds with the addition of a nucleophilic naphthol to a substituted electrophilic quinone, followed by rearomatization of the quinone.
