Abstract:
In immunocompromised conditions, latent syphilitic infection can lead to secondary syphilis. We present here a case of neurosyphilis (syphilitic meningomyelitis) in a kidney transplant recipient. Atypical presentation, the typical maculopapular rash, and a serological test all pointed to secondary syphilis. The scenario illustrates a crucial point: infections can go undetected, whereas a patient is on immunosuppressive therapy.

Annotation. Syphilis remains one of the infections of particular concern worldwide, being one of the most important medical and social problems. Scientists' reports and WHO data show an increase in the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases. Syphilitic infection is still a pressing problem in Ukraine. Because syphilis facilitates the transmission of HIV and STIs, a comprehensive model for the prevention of HIV, STIs, and syphilis at the same time is needed. This requires the health authorities to strengthen treatment and prevention measures, among which an important role is to improve the

The peculiarities of the state of newborn babies born from mothers who have suffered syphilis are described. To date, the incidence of syphilis in Ukraine has a clear tendency to decline, but still remains quite high. The maximum incidence of syphilis is observed in women aged 15-20 years. Syphilis is an important health problem worldwide; however, few studies have probed the impact of syphilitic infection on T cell turnover. The mechanisms behind the frequency of T cell subset changes and the associations between these subsets during syphilitic infection remain unclear. Herein, we used a cell-staining method and flow cytometry to explore changes in T cell subpopulations and potential contribution of apoptosis and pyroptosis that triggered therein. We investigated caspase-1-mediated pyroptosis and caspase-3-mediated apoptosis of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, the major effector lymphocy

This chapter discusses the profound impact of psychiatric disorders, using Eleanor's experience of schizophrenia as a vivid example. It details how her life was upended by disembodied voices that escalated into menacing demands, highlighting the disorder's severe social and emotional toll. Schizophrenia, affecting about 1% of individuals globally, exemplifies the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors that contribute to psychiatric conditions. Abstract One of the more alarming medical therapies, loosely based on physiological theorizing, was introduced by a formidable Viennese psychiatrist, Julius Wagner-Jauregg (1857—1940). He did not hold with the Freudian philosophy, which in Vienna admitted of little dissent, and was an early enthusiast for pharmacological intervention. He had, he thought, seen an improvement in the condition of some of his disturbed patients after they recovered from feverish infections. This led him to a hypothesis (which later proved wrong) of how an increased body temperature might redound on the brain. He d
