Barhaido, Emanuel. Thesis, Örebro University, Department of Humanities, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:oru:diva-1486.

Abstract:

Thesis, Mälardalen University, School of Sustainable Development of Society and Technology, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mdh:diva-6851.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate a relatively unknown domain, namely the one of abuse amongst Assyrians/Syriacs. Although the community has lived in Sweden for more than 40 years and yields one for the countries larger immigrant groups, there has been little research performed addressing the question of abuse within the community. Hopefully this study will provide useful knowledge to those whom in one way or another deal with abusing Assyrians/Syriacs, such as for instance rehabilitation institutes or social welfare authorities. It might also promote a constructive debate on the issue within this specific community, which the author thinks is lacking, and to further shed light on the question of abuse in general.</p><p>By the method of qualitative study, five former abusing Assyrians/Syriacs, with backgrounds in drug substance abuse and/or gambling addiction have been studied. The primary questions have been those of how the subjects got into abusing, the time during the abuse, and how the abuse was overcome. Empirical data was collected through four individual face-to-face interviews and one via e-mail, and the resulting conclusions were drawn by relating the data to the theories of deviant behavior, labeling theory and Goldbergs deviant career model.</p><p>The main result of the study is that the respondents to various degrees have suffered a difficult childhood. In the case of many of them one parent was deceased prematurely or for others the parent was largely absent. Furthermore, some had to endure physical violence in different forms, threats, bullying, or discrimination, either in school, at home or by society. It became evident that the respondents have experienced one or several crisis in combination with grief, which has created a sense of insecurity on their lives.</p><p>The path away from abuse has been different for the individuals, although they all share having had the support from the closest family. One of the respondents became a born-again Christian and another went through various therapy rehabilitation treatments. The others have managed on their own with the support from family.</p>

Abstract:

Abstract:

Palm, Gustav, and Nemrud Kurt.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis studies the National Labour Market Board (AMS) and the role it played during the Assyrian/Syrian migration during the 1960s and 1970s. AMS was created at the end of the 1940s with full employment as its main goal. During the 1950s and 1960s this seemingly worked perfectly and AMS had considerable influence on the migration patterns to Sweden. However this changed during the 1970s and a combination of events turned the Swedish economy to a decline. At this point in time a relatively great number of Assyrians/Syrians refugees started to migrate to Sweden. The thesis uses Bo Rothstein’s writings about Sweden as a corporate state as a starting point. Rothstein argues that the “corporate spirit” that had greatly influenced the Swedish politics since the 1930s started to decline during the 1980s in all sectors. I argue that the Assyrian/Syrian migration in the middle of the 1970s is the start of this decline in the labour market sector. I also argue that AMS influential position on the migration field ends, or at least greatly decreases as a result of the Assyrian/Syrian migration.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the connection between migration discourses and politics through the assyrian/syrian immigration to Sweden 1975-1982. Using Bacchi’s “What’s the problem (represented to be)?” (WPR) methodology, which is based on Foucault’s theories of governmentality, this thesis investigates how preconceptions of issues forms understanding of them as problems and shapes the possible solutions to the problem concerned. The results of this thesis indicates that the assyrian/syrian immigration to Sweden was understood by the government and its agencies as an issue of control over the population and over immigration. There was a consensus amongst all parties that immigration to Sweden must be regulated both by law and in numbers and in distribution across the country but disagreements existed on solutions. This study aims to increase knowledge of the different responses to the assyrian/syrian immigration in order to further understanding of how political consensus shapes immigration politics and how border politics and integration politics intersect and affect one another.

Abstract:
<p>The key purpose of this research has been to study and understand how young people with Syriac ethnicity experience their identity, when living in two different cultures. The Syriac minority is something of a special case when it concerns establishing the identity of an individual, since syriac´s do not have an official country.</p><p>To be able to do this research an interview has been done with four young students with syriac ethnicity. The four of them is attending their final year at “gymnasiet” in Sweden which is equivalent to USA’s senior year in high school.</p><p>The multicultural school is today a fact and many immigrants attending the Swedish schools today feels misplaced when they meet the Swedish culture through fellow students and society. A clash between cultures occurs and most of the students, with non-Swedish ethnicity, live some kind of dual life. One side of this twin identity represents the ethnic identity which dominates at home and around relatives. The other side is displayed in circumstances outside of their home, which is at school and in the Swedish society in general.</p><p>This research shows the general opinion, among syriac high school students, concerning the individual identity and in which way they handle their own identity development when living within two different cultures.</p><p>One of my main questions to investigate is to find out if young students, with syriac ethnicity, develops a weak root in their ethnic identity by living outside of the syriac community.</p><p>One of my conclusions is that a student with syriac ethnicity, whom is educated in an intercultural school is rather encouraged in seeking his/her roots. Since the multicultural environment awakens a curiosity in students to seek their own ethnic identity.</p>

Abstract:
It is impossible to resign". The study is based on the assumption that those who immigrate late in life have some odds against them that can make them highly receptive to mental stress, isolation and loneliness. This study aims to deepen the knowledge of the experiences and the perceptions the family members of elderly Assyrians/Syriacs have concerning formal care, informal care and their experiences as next of kin. Based on the exploratory purpose of the study semi structured interviews were conducted with 13 participants from: Turkey, Syria and Iraq, all of them providers of informal care for their older relatives who are late in life migrants in Sweden, and the majority of them beeing illiterate. A clearly perceptible theme in the study is that of being the responsible next of kin. The struggle for relatives to cope with the care giving demands induces both feelings of restriction as well as the satisfaction of being able to return the care that was once offered. Conclusions drawn from this study is that the responsibility of the caring next of kin never ceases. Another conclusion is that care which is not perceived to offer the older person the possibility to be understood will be perceived as insufficient. Ideas appear that there are different ways of looking at how care should be provided by younger and older generations, which is also associated with the personal conditions for receiving formal as well as informal care. It proved to be important to be recognized by the formal care. For the participants it entails to be heard, to be shown trust, to receive financial compensation for their care and knowledge of how care should be provided.

Johanen, Jacob.

Abstract:
Sexual debut age drops and it´s more common with an increased number of sexualpartners. An early sexual debut, however, can be problematic in many aspects. Research shows that early sexdebut should be seen as a sign of a harmful lifestyle when it revealed that adolescents with early sexual relationships also tend to use more alcohol and drugs compared with youths without sexual experience. One study indicates that the Assyrian/Syrian youths in Sweden tend to debut late and have a low number of sexual partners. However, no qualitative studies have been made about the group´s values and behaviors about sexuality. The purpose of this study is to increase understanding of the values and the behaviors about sexuality and if there is an influence from cultural aspects. Furthermore, the study also aimed to investigate whether there is a connection between familyconnectedness with alcohol and drug habits. Based on a qualitative approach 12 Assyrian/Syrian youths is being examined through written interviews answered anonymously. The material was analyzed by sentence concentrator and selected quotes were shortened and categorized based on different themes. In order to interpret and analyze the respondents values and behaviors about sexuality, alcohol and drugs, cultural aspects as well as their family situations, were following selected theories used as tools; intimacy transformation in relation to sexuality, gemeinschaft and gesellschaft in relation to culture and social capital in relation to family connectedness. This is to achieve a deeper understanding of the respondents’ values.  The final discussion involves discussions of a varied presence of values and behaviors regarding sexuality, where some respondents say they are against premarital relationships and other who have a more liberal view and say that it is up to each individual to decide. It also shows that culture or religion has an impact of those respondents who indicates values that are against premarital relationships. Even discussions about family connectedness in relation to alcohol and drugs are presented where there might be a possible link between weak connectedness and poor communication in relation to alcohol or drug abuse.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to investigate segregation from an accommodation perspective. The essay questions how the residents of Ronna feel about their neighborhood and what they think of other people's views of their area. Our purpose is to conduct a qualitative study of whether or not individuals experience residential segregation in Ronna. The essay is based on qualitative interviews, which were conducted with five people who have lived in Ronna for at least five years and who define themselves as Assyrians/Syrians. To analyze our empirical data, we have used two theoretical perspectives. One by Westin and Elias &amp; Scotson, which is the theory about social groups - established and outsiders. The second theory explains how ethnic boundaries and enclaves occur. With the support of previous research, we highlight and define the fundamental factors causing segregation. After analyzing our empirical data, we concluded that residential segregation is a broad concept and that there are several factors that lead to segregation. The result of the study indicates that all informants thrive in their neighborhood and feel a solidarity and cohesion with each other. In Ronna the Assyrian/Syrian is a dominant ethnic community which has formed a strong “We” – group in their neighborhood.<br>Syfte med denna studie är att belysa boendesegregationen i Ronna ur de boendes perspektiv.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This essay is about use, misuse and non-use of history in politics. To recognize genocide is a use of history that has been established in politics, but also sparked debate. The position of non-use of history in international policy towards Turkey's denial policy has increasingly been replaced by recognition of genocide as a matter of making up with the story, moral consider, and where fundamental issues of culture, identity, history and morality has become guiding element in the discourse behind European expansion and integration policies. A breakthrough for this change is due to the Cold War's end; since the 1980s it has become possible to realize the humanitarianism which has its roots in the Enlightenment humanism underlying the United Nations, and later the EU conventions on human rights and genocide conventions. A genocide concept has become an important discourse in world politics that puts moral pressure on states to act. Parliamentary recognition of the genocide of the Armenians, Assyrians / Syrians / Chaldeans and Pontic Greeks, is partly redress for the victims and their descendants, but also an opportunity for reconciliation.

<p>The key purpose of this research has been trying to understand, and study how assyrian/syriac youth create their identity under the influence of two or several different cultures. We have also looked upon how different factors such as history, religion, language, family and school play a role in the youths identity development.</p><p>We have used a qualitative method in our study where we have interviewed six assyrian/syriac youth. Because of their Christian faith the assyrian/syriac group has been forced to migrate from their countries to different parts around the world. In the new countries the group has been forced to create and live in a diasporaculture. The city Södertälje in Sweden has developed to become a metropole for this ethnic group where they have founded a substantial diasporaculture. In the new countries the assyrian/syriac youth have developed an attitude towards the new country and its culture, which is a mixture of their home culture and the majority communitys. Having to integrate and adjust to two different cultures, while at the same time trying to create ones own identity can sometimes lead to conflicts within the own ethnic group and the majority community. It appeared in the study that the assyrian/syriac youth felt like a duality between the home culture and the culture of the majority community, which felt like living a dual life.</p>

Abstract:

Abstract:
This research aims to gain a detailed understanding of the push and pull factors that lead many Syrians in Turkey to migrate to Europe. Syrians are pushed to migrate for various reasons, including socio-economic difficulties in Turkey. It explores the Syrians’ experiences in Turkey and the elements that have deterred them from gaining the fundamental rights of accommodation, access to the labor market, and refugee status. The pull factors refer to the gains that the Syrians might achieve when migrating to Europe. These gains are socio-economic gains that assure a better future for them in Europe in comparison to their presence in Turkey. In this case, this research also explores how the Syrians plan to migrate to Europe by employing the influence of their social networks to conduct their secondary migration. This qualitative study uses seven semi-structured interviews and analyzes the experiences of the interviewees in order to reach concrete conclusions. The results of this study, according to the interviewees’ experiences, show that restrictive Turkish policies and procedures have pushed many Syrians to migrate. At the same time, the Syrians are attracted to migrating to Europe for better protection for them and their children. The findings also demonstrate that social ties influenced Syrians in their decision to migrate to Europe and avoid being deported to Syria.

Abstract:
Syria’s peaceful uprising turned into an armed conflict with Assad’s lethal response to demonstrations demanding dignity and freedom. Looking for an oppositional Syrian political power who might have influenced dynamics on the ground, light was shed on the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood (SMB). As dictatorships toppled in 2011 in the region and were replaced by MB-related parties such as in Egypt and Tunisia, the interest into the previously exiled SMB increased as a Syrian alternative. Research in this area was predominantly concerned with SMB’s history, and did not examine how the SMB’s shaped the ongoing events in Syria, and how in return, the conflict shaped the SMB. This thesis analyses, mainly through exclusive interviews, the SMB’s evolution as a prominent Syrian opposition group both on the domestic and international level. Findings show a shift in priorities within the organization from the hierarchal system to a wide-spectrum approach through various charitable, social and political activities enabling the SMB’s reintegration into the Syrian society. Nevertheless, due to pressures from international and domestic powers, the SMB diluted into the wider opposing bodies and lost the forefront position within the political stage. The international scrutiny facing the SMB increased as the Egyptian MB experienced political damage following the military coup in 2013. This was followed by the threat- driven apathy from the Gulf states towards the MB. Western Governments also did not support the SMB despite the democratic and pluralistic vision for a future Syria being inherent in the SMB’s principles. Eventually, the SMB kept itself over water as Turkey and Qatar acted as a lifeline. The above-mentioned issues including wider historical links and the internal structures of the SMB creates a fascinating angle to the Syrian crisis which had not been researched before and provides the basis for future research on this ever-evolving situation.

Abstract:
It is a widely held view that EMPTY CATEGORIES (ECs) provide a 'window' through which to probe into the principles of Universal Grammar (UG). This work is concerned with the nature of Empty Categories in Syrian. In particular, we concentrate on their implications for the Government and Binding theory. Chapter One considers some THEORETICAL PRELIMINARIES. Specifically, we introduce grammatical theory within the Chomskyan perspective, note the importance of ECs in "GB, and highlight the principles that force their existence in certain situations. We also examine the distribution of overt and empty categories with respect to the conditions of the binding theory, as proposed in Chomsky (1981), and consider both the Lectures (1981) and the Barriers (1986b) version of the ECP. Chapter Two studies CLAUSE STRUCTURE. We discuss how VSO sentences should be analyzed, presenting evidence that VSO order derives from an underlying SVO order. We also look at the nature of verb-fronting, reviewing three analyses. Then, we concern ourselves with verbless clauses. We consider how small clauses are treated in English. We also consider Syrian verbless clauses, highlighting their distribution and provide an analysis. Then, we consider the si tua tion wi th pronominal subjects, extending the analysis. We conclude with some complications. Chapter Three deals with SUBJECTLESS FINITE CLAUSES. We introduce some of the basic characteristics of Null Subject Languages (NSLs). We review two positions on the nature of the element occupying subject position in NSLs: Chomsky's Lectures (1981) and Chomsky's Concepts & Consequences (1982) - and argue for the pro analysis. Then, we focus on Syrian as an NSL, illustrating how the 'richness' of verb morphology triggers the presence of an EC in subject position of finite clauses. Chapter Four looks at CLITIC CONSTRUCTIONS. l-Ie briefly summarize the data, highlight two analyses, and give objections to the movement analysis. Then, we present some further data involving prepositional clitic doubling. Finally, we consider, in the ligh t of Kayne's generaliza tion, Borer's Case absorption analysis and Lyons's approach, some of the theoretical implications of clitic Constructions. Chapter Five is concerned with what are normally called WHMOVEMENT CONSTRUCTIONS. We look at lib-questions, considering the variety of positions in which the EC appears. Then, we look briefly at other Wh-movement -constructions i.e. Relative clauses and Topicalization sentences. We identify certain features that an analysis might use in such constructions. -v- Chapter Six looks at APPARENT RAISING SENTENCES. We explain what is meant by a raising sentence in grammatical theory. Then, we present the basic Syrian data, offering tests for raising sentences. Finally, we consider the implications of the Syrian data, illustating how it poses an apparent problem for GB. We offer a good solution to the problem and show that we are not dealing with raising sentences, but rather with instances of topicalization. Chapter Seven concentrates on PASSIVE CONSTRUCTIONS. We take a closer look at the nature of passives in English, highlighting the distinction between lexical and transformational passives. Then, we consider Syrian Passives looking at ordinary and impersonal passives. We deal with the question of whether or not Syrian has transformational passives, looking at what look like pseudo-passives. We argue against treating Syrian Passives as instances involving NP-movement. Thus, if Syrian has no raising sentences and no transformational passives, then it probably has no NP-traces. Chapter Eight focuses on what look like CONTROL CONSTRUCTIONS (CCs). We look at CCs in English, considering the basic data, highlighting the ways in which control sentences differ from raising sentences. Then, we present the GB analysis of Control Sentences. We consider CCs in Syrian, showing how the Syrian data poses a problem for standard GB, noting that Syrian CCs involve not a PRO subject but a pro subject, presenting alternative GB accounts and arguing that there is no problem here. Finally, Chapter Nine offers a summary of the main conclusions, highlights the questions left open in the thesis, and concludes with a reference to the areas that need further research.

Abstract:
The scope of this work is certain linguistic elements which make no contribution towards the truth-conditional content of their utterances. Nevertheless, they play a crucial role in utterance interpretation. They function as constraints on the inferential computations the hearer performs in order to establish the relevance of the proposition in which they occur. The sort of expressions this work is concerned with are items like so, after all, you see, llowever and although in both English and their counterparts in the Syrian dialect of the Arabic language spoken in two cities, Lattakia and Homs. The framework of this study is supplied by Sperber and wilson who argue that relevance is the key to communication. This relevance-based framework is adopted by Blakemore (1987) in terms of whose ideas the English and the Syrian Arabic expressions are analysed as semantic constraints on relevance. The concept of a "discourse connective" adopted in this study differs greatly from those discourse analysts who use this term in a broader sense. In this study the term "discourse connective" is reserved for those expressions whose function is not to contribute to the truth-conditional content of their utterances rather to indicate how the interpretation of one utterance contributes to the interpretation of the other. As one expects similarities and differences between the English expressions and their Syrian counterparts arise but the similarities are much greater than the differences.

Abstract:
Background: The recent uprisings in Syria have displaced many individuals within and outside the country. Despite the large number of people affected by the war, little research captures their experiences. The literature in this area is predominantly of a statistical nature. This is problematic in the field of Counselling Psychology, which moves away from diagnosis to focus on individual experiences. Aim: The aim of this study is to understand the subjective experiences of Syrian refugees in the UK, particularly the strategies that have aided them in coping with these experiences. Research has indicated therapeutic benefits for the communication of coping strategies. Methodology: The research utilised a qualitative methodology, adapting principles of Narrative Inquiry. A total of three males participated in the research. Each participant was asked one opening question prior to beginning his story. Prompting questions were developed according to the content of each narrative. Each interview was transcribed and analysed in Arabic, which was the language spoken in the interviews. An inductive thematic analysis was utilised to analyse each transcript independently. Analysis: Each participant's story was presented separately, as the themes from each narrative differed from the rest. Essam's narrative was identified as consisting of five principal themes; 'Situation in Syria', 'Searching for a Better Place to Settle', 'Journey from Jordan to the United Kingdom', 'Support and Coping Strategies' and 'Feelings'. Mustafa's transcript was analysed as containing four principal themes; 'Experiences of the War While in Syria', 'Support and Coping Strategies', 'Impact of the War on Health' and 'Coming to the United Kingdom'. Talal's interview was analysed as covering six principal themes; 'Political Opinion', 'Experience of Being in the Army', 'Working to Help and Guide Others', 'Escaping from Syria', 'Life in the United Kingdom' and 'Support and Coping Strategies'. Conclusion: This research generates further understanding of the subjective experiences of Syrian refugees residing in the United Kingdom, which can inform future psychological interventions with this population. The participants' descriptions of various coping strategies that helped them with their experiences may help guide practitioners to understand potential barriers to treatment. Furthermore, cultural differences were identified which could also aid in understanding why Syrians may not attempt to access psychological support. Recommendations are suggested for working psychologically with Syrian refugees, alongside acknowledging limitations of the research and suggestions for further investigation and practice.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates depictions in the Kurdish media (Rudaw and Firat News Agency (ANF)) of mass violence perpetrated against Kurdish civilians in northern and northeastern Syria – an area known to Kurds as Rojava – in recent years. Articles from two media organizations were subject to mixed-method text analysis (quantitative and qualitative) to uncover how mass violence was portrayed. The theory of framing in the media is used to show how violence is committed and what role ideology plays in this process. It is subsequently used in order to uncover commonly used frames for the roles played by various actors involved in mass violence. Hence, a comparison is made between the contents of the two media institutions. The results primarily relate to the role of ideology in the coverage of mass violence by the selected Kurdish media outlets, which are affiliated with two major Kurdish political parties, one left-leaning and one right-leaning. Findings revealed different aspects of mass violence, governed principally by nationalist and partisan orientations. Nationalist agendas played a significant role in Rudaw’s content and a smaller one in ANF’s. Partisan agendas had roughly the same magnitude in both, and the two outlets clashed politically but met nationalistically in many areas. The research questions were addressed through a content analysis of tens of stories disseminated by both Kurdish media organizations during the same time-space.

<p> <i>From Syrian Sea to Shining Sea</i> is a collection of poetry that reflects the lives of Arab-Americans. Whether they may be first generation, Muslim, or immigrants, there is a piece within their self that reflects a longing for the homeland, ties to the motherland, and struggles that arose as a result of the Syrian Civil War. As a first-generation, Arab-American, Muslim woman I wrote these poems through the raw lens that is my experience. </p><p>

Abstract:
From ancient times it has been the practice of humankind to build structures in which to worship God. People built centres of various shapes and sizes in which different kinds of worship were conducted. Within the Christian Church, even though the basic concept of worship is the same, there are different doctrines and customs in different Church traditions. In this thesis I attempt to shed some light on the consecration of churches in the tradition of the Syrian Orthodox Church; this is a relatively uncharted field. It is prefaced by an overview of dedication in the early Christian period and of the Jewish liturgical traditions on which the worship was based. Next I consider some Syriac literary works, the importance of Syriac literature and liturgy, and the liturgical books of the Syrian Orthodox Church. I then describe house churches of the first centuries and their gradual development into today’s magnificent and artistic churches. An important part of my work focuses on the Holy ‘Myron’, which is an integral component used in the consecration of Syrian churches. I discuss the importance accorded to 'Myron' in the church and the different types of anointing involving Myron and other oils. The main part of the thesis focuses on the construction of a church from its very beginning until its consecration once it has been completed, referring to biblical and symbolic interpretations. This includes a detailed description of the different tools and utensils used in the Syrian Orthodox Church (some illustrated) with an explanation of their relevance and meaning. The views of the church fathers such as Aphrahat, Ephrem, Moses Bar Kepha, Dionysius Bar Salibi and Jacob of Serugh, and the references and allegories from the Acts of Thomas and the Sugitho on the Church of Edessa are also included in my work. The main sources for this study are my translations of the Vatican Borg. manuscript Syriac 57 and Paris manuscript Syriac 110. The official version of the church consecration used in the Syrian Orthodox Church is a copy of Vatican manuscript 51. The Syriac texts with translations are provided in chapter two.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited<br>Most international observers believe there are no suitable solutions to the Syrian civil war. They are wrong. By initially establishing the integral principle that the fighting in Syria is a microcosm of the regional cold war being fought between Iran and Saudi Arabia, we recognize that any resolution must satisfy these veto players. Utilizing game theory to evaluate the war, our research deconstructs the problematic position the parties have backed themselves into: perpetual fighting even though peace is more beneficial to everyone involved. The lens of the prisoner’s dilemma, which focuses on rational players acting counter to their best interests due to a lack of trust, helps us identify why both groups are driven to continue down a violent path instead of indulging in suspicion during the peace process. This analysis effectively demonstrates what the international community has failed to realize: a military stalemate is the optimal circumstance for reaching a lasting peace in Syria. This utilization of game theory, while obviously relevant to resolving one of today’s most precarious conflicts, also has larger implications for civil wars. These sorts of clashes are increasingly more commonplace, and an effective resolution knowledge base is necessary for a stable international environment.

Abstract:
The Syrian Civil War has displaced millions of Syria’s inhabitants both around the region and throughout the world. These individuals carry different experiences, views, and perceptions regarding what they have left and their views on the conflict. This study seeks to identify the dominant frames used by 11 Syrian diaspora individuals living in Sweden when framing the Syrian Civil War. It also aims to identify individuals' views of the civil war. The study uses a qualitative framing analysis and applies Kuyper’s function of frames in a total of 11 semi- structured interviews. The study examines interviewees' frames regarding (a) The Arab Spring demonstrations, (b) The Syrian regime, and (c) International Interests. The study found the following frames on (a) horria (freedom), shohada al-thowra (martyrs of the revolution), extremist opposition, (b) dictatorial, dictatorship, fakher (pride), and (c) natural resources, the USA and Russia. The study argues that interviewees adopt different frames based on three factors, (I) media consumption, (II) sectarian affiliation, and (III) geographical origin.<br>Inbördeskriget i Syrien har fördrivit miljontals av Syriens invånare både runt om i regionen och över hela världen.

Abstract:
The news shows us what we already know about the war in Syria and, in fact, any conflict in the Middle East, insofar as it resorts to familiar forms of news reportage. Typically, this can be a stream of constant violent war imagery, which in turn creates a distance between the viewer and the tragedy itself, thus producing a feeling of detachment and indifference - the familiar ‘compassion fatigue’.(Moeller, 1999) The research looks at developing a counter-point to the mainstream media by bringing to light some of the hidden histories of the affected Syrian people. Small histories are told by way of monologues, testimonies, and informal interviews with a known circle of participants. People who lived or are living with the conflict day-to-day, a group consisting of my mother, sisters, nephews, nieces and a few friends. My experience as a Syrian living outside the conflict, my relationships to the participants, and my travel to the country during this time of war are all considered as inspiring material, which both constrain and focus the topic under discussion. This participant-observer methodology incorporation with gathering material from inside the conflict enriched the research findings and pushed it towards an informing exploration of the ever-changing distance between myself and the topic. The project refuses to be another Middle Eastern art cliché. It enjoys qualities of inventive, and at once truthful, documentary practice. It embraces a personal and domestic perspective, looking through the eyes of those whom are living the conflict. At the same time, I adopt a compassionate response that seeks to engage the viewer’s sympathy, not their anger. Consequently, I investigate the ethical issues of war images and argue against the use of violent images. To inform and inspire the practice, I investigate relevant Syrian and Middle Eastern art to position the project within the contemporary Middle Eastern home-related art. These research steps led to a number of hybrid mixes of documentary and experimental short videos. The practice is supported by a number of illustrations – as additional material - which has been created when it wasn’t at all possible to gather material from Syria. The written thesis informs and supports the creative component, while the practice stands as a creative version of the written research and findings. The thesis also provides a reflective commentary on how the practice came to be, the difficult circumstances behind its production and the passage it took before it was finally realised.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to analyse the contents in texts about the intra-Syrian peace negotiations, as well as identify latent political meanings, through examining how the sides of the war are portrayed in al-Jazeera´s coverage. Dr Zainab Abdul-Nabi suggests in her analysis of al-Jazeera´s coverage of another event in the Syrian war, namely the chemical attack in Ghouta, that al-Jazeera has a catalysing role in the Arab Spring when covering the Syrian war in particular. This study continues along those lines that Abdul-Nabi suggests by analysing the coverage of another event in the Syrian war – the UN-led intra-Syrian peace negotiations. Purposefully, this study should increase the awareness of how political meanings could be hidden in texts. The theory of agenda setting, a theory by Walter Lippman which was further developed by McCombs and Shaw, is used in this study: media set the agenda by inserting certain portraits of how things are and what the society should be concerned about. Content analysis is the method used to perform this study, following Halperin and Heath´s model. By interpreting articles from an influential media source – al-Jazeera – the analysis shows that the examined texts portray the opposition as protagonists against a brutal government, plausibly making the media source a part of the war since the texts attempt to set the agenda that a certain side is the protagonists and another is the antagonists. Underplaying the potential capacities of the peace negotiations and not compromising with the other side is evident, as well as holding the other side responsible of the hostilities in the war, in the texts, hence having a catalysing role with its coverage in the war. Also, the texts tend to leave out details concerning the other side (the government side), portraying the opposition to be representing the people..

Abstract:
<p> After the Syrian Civil War began, refugee exodus gained unprecedented momentum. Turkey, as one of the major destinations of Syrian refugees, experienced problems regarding the accommodation of a high number of refugees (Dorman, 2014; UNICEF, 2014; USAID, 2015). The scholars widely debated the problems regarding educating refugee (Akkaya, 2013; Arabaci et al. 2013), but the available studies do not focus on experiences of refugee students in the schools.</p><p> This dissertation study, therefore, examines the schooling experiences of Syrian child refugees in a Turkish public school with a developing conceptual framework named as Middle East Refugee Protection Model (MRPM). The MRPM originates as a result of the different expectations and motives among the host countries located in Europe and the Middle East.</p><p> This study uses Critical Qualitative Research. The data is collected through interviews and classroom observations. I employed the reconstructive data analysis strategies and used NVivo qualitative data analysis software to analyze the data.</p><p> The results show that the Syrian refugee students&rsquo; experiences in the school in Turkey are not dependent on the liability of the legal instruments but social norms and values. The school staff and classroom teachers use a child-centric approach to educate and integrate refugee students through accentuating values such as transparency and honesty, determination and commitment, and approving authority. Syrian refugee students in the public school face challenges due to their language skills, the host communities&rsquo; social expectations, and the lack of sustainable refugee education policy. As they continue facing challenges, refugee students begin constructing survival skills and these survival skills help them become an independent being and develop a sense of agency.</p><p> Based on the interpretation of the results, I have created two models to explain the refugee education strategies in the school, and how refugee students make sense of the school staff's approach in educating them. The first model is the refugee education and protection model. It explains the concepts and principles that school staff uses to regulate their refugee education system. The second model is agency and independence development, which explains the stages that refugee students go through to be an agent and an independent student. This dissertation suggests theoretical, political and practical implications of the use of models and effective strategies for educating refugees.</p><p>

Full text
Abstract:
The Syrian Civil War has led to a devastating refugee crisis unlike any seen in modern history. Millions of people have fled their country and resettled elsewhere, either in refugee camps or host communities. While much of the international focus is on their physical conditions, little attention and funding have been given to the mental health needs of the Syrian refugees. Although ensuring their safety and physical well-being is of primary importance, addressing mental health needs to be better prioritized to avoid the development of significant problems in the future. This paper discusses the significance of the mental health problem in the broader context of the crisis overall, examines the current methods being utilized and their drawbacks, provides a case study of three local refugee organizations, and finally, highlights other programs experiencing success to identify potential opportunities for improvement of care.

Sulaiman, Mais. "The syntax of wh-questions in Syrian Arabic." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/3222.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis discusses some different types of wh-questions available in the dialect of Syrian Arabic. It demonstrates that this variety of Arabic has a very rich and varied system of wh-questions. As a prelude to this, it will first be shown that, as far as basic word order in the clause is concerned, two possible orders are allowed in SA, VSO and SVO. It will be argued that in the past tense, the unmarked order is VSO and SVO as a commonly occurring alternative. In the VSO order, the verb raises to a higher functional head F, a lower head in the complementizer system following Rizzi (2001). The subject raises to SpecTP due to the rich agreement system in SA. In the SVO order, the NP is either definite or specific indefinite. Assuming that F can be marked with a definite/specific feature, it can attract a subject to its specifier. Alternatively F can be marked with a [Focus] feature so it can attract a wh-phrase when a higher interrogative head INT is merged with F. It will be shown that in wh-questions, the V-S order is obligatory; however, this is not a consequence of a V2 constraint. Following Holmberg (2014), it will be argued that this order follows from a constraint on movement across the head F where the verb lands. Only one XP can precede the finite verb in F. After this, the strategies for wh-question formation in SA will be discussed, demonstrating that the in-situ strategy is marginal, being employed only in discourse linked contexts. It will be argued that Merchant‟s (2001, 2005) analysis of multiple wh-questions does not account for the facts of SA. Instead, it will be proposed that they should be accounted for in terms of the clause structure folding approach discussed in Moro (2011). A further topic covered will be pied-piping in SA. Facts from this domain will be used to argue against Heck‟s (2009) edge generalization, according to which a wh-pied-piper has to move to the edge of the pied-piped phrase. However, it will be shown that there is no such movement in the possessive structure in SA, as illustrated in (1): (1) a. hada beit bassel. this house Bassel „This is Bassel‟s house.‟ v b. beit miin hada? house who this „Whose house is this?‟ In (1a), the possessor appears in post-nominal position. In the case of a wh-possessor, as in (1b), it still appears in that position. Specifically, it does not undergo movement to the edge of the pied-piped phrase. In order to account for the pied-piping facts in this construction, I investigate the Q/wh-agreement system in SA, following Cable (2007), trying to determine whether the facts in (1) might follow from SA being a non-Q/wh-agreement language. However, I show that SA is an agreement language and propose that the behaviour of Wh-possessive phrases can be accounted for in terms of a combination of Cinque‟s (2000, 2005) roll up movement and Cable‟s (2007) Q-theory. As I will show, this analysis also accounts elegantly for the fact that wh-possessive phrases cannot contain adjectives. Along with the long extraction strategy, SA also employs the partial wh-movement (wh-scope marking) strategy for questioning out of embedded questions, as in (2): (2) šw fakkar-ty maʕ miin knt ʕam iħki? what thought-2SG.F with who was.1SG PROG speaking „What did you think? Who was I talking to?‟ It will be argued that there is no direct dependency between the wh-scope marker and the embedded wh-phrase. The wh-scope marker is not an expletive. It is base generated in the complement of a copula clause. It will be rgued that the wh-scope marker and the embedded wh-clause form a small clause embedded in the complement of the main verb. This clause takes the embedded wh-clause as its subject and the wh-scope marker as its predicate assimilating the embedded wh-clause to a free relative clause headed by a null head. Another strategy for questioning out of embedded questions in SA involves what looks like clausal pied piping: vi (3) addesh ʕmr-a al-et-l-ak? how.much age-her said-3SG.F.SU-to-2SG.M.OBJ „How old is she, did she say?‟ It will be argued that sentences like (3) are instances not of pied piping but of interrogative slifting, an operation that is different from both scope marking and long distance movement. Following Haddican et al (2014), it will be proposed that the slifted clause does not originate in the complement of the main clause. Rather, it is coindexed with a null operator merged in that position.

Lebbadi, Taha Mohammad. "Computerizing safety management systems in Syrian shipping companies." Thesis, University of Essex, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.605557.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the process of integrating information technology (IT) within the ship safety management system for enhancing compliance with the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. The importance of this integration is based on the need of ship management companies for properly managing safety information within real time scope and across boundaries of geographical space - namely, between the head office ashore and the ships at sea. The way ISM Code implementers and users perceive and feel about network and computer-mediated communication of safety information has never been researched previously, and this is the research gap that the current study tries to address. Two case studies of Syrian ship management companies have been selected to analyze the process of IT integration, its environment and its impact on ship safety procedures. The study has adopted an interpretive approach, and a research conceptual framework that combines between the 'institutional theory' and the 'structural technology adoption model' for the analysis and interpretation of the qualitative data collected. Thematically, the empirics of the study has focused. on exploring the role of the regulator in institutionalizing the IT integration process, and the role of resourcing in enhancing this process in the maritime transport industry. In this regard, this study is the first to utilize institutional theory and legitimization strategies to explain the IT integration process in shipping companies exclusively. The findings of the study show that external institutions such as governments, regulators and international organizations have played a pivotal role in institutionalizing organizational practices, such as compliance with safety codes. With the absence of sufficient coercive or regulative pressures, IT practices could not be fully operationalized or optimized although its usefulness has been recognised by both the individual user and the organization. On the other hand, IT integration was perceived as enhancing to compliance with ship safety codes, but the full integration process was impeded by lack of supportive techno logical environment and pricy telecommunication costs. This research contributes to the theory and practice of e-management and IT adoption research by providing empirical evidence from practice, by highlighting how an e-system for maritime ship management can be accepted and institutionalized, particularly in the area of ship safety management. On the other hand, this research has addressed the need for a conceptual model that is capable of explaining the mechanisms that ship management organizations adopt for introducing a new technological innovation in their work functions. This is a real contribution to the existing research in the areas of information systems, maritime logistics, and ship safety, as well as the areas of organizational management and organizational behaviour.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2003.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 118-[120]).<br>Symbols have played a major role in the development of a Syrian national identity since the beginning of the 20th century. These representations are national, official, and/or public (flag, song, and square), that are repetitively performed by successive generations of Syrian citizens, thus forming the historic collective framework of Syrian memory. The symbols are remembered as past public sites of independence and freedom while they currently signify an imposed loyalty to the authoritarian Syrian regime. In the translation of nostalgic memory as active resistance, the double play of meaning (both official and personal) creates an opportunity to subvert domination. This subversion is inherent in every official performance, in every pledge to the flag, in every performance of the anthem, and in every mandatory demonstration across the public squares. This thesis weaves the visual and spatial representations of power and the subsequent subversions for empowerment to narrate an untold, recollected, Syrian history.<br>by Lina Sergie.<br>S.M.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I have undertaken to analyse the effect upon the cult of the Syrian goddess of the process of religious syncretism, which occurred through contact between the Aramaic speaking people of the city sacred to the goddess: Hierapolis/ Mnbg, and the peoples of the Hellenistic kingdoms and the Roman Empire. The purpose of my analysis is to examine the extent to which the syncretic developments observed in the cult of the Syrian goddess can be viewed as systematic and whether looking specifically at syncretism in a religion is useful in gaining insights into that religion, where a non-specific approach would not. From previous studies of syncretism in the fields of theology and anthropology, I have established a workable definition of the term religious syncretism and I have combined aspects of structural and cognitive approaches to syncretism. I have focussed on the types of syncretism called association and identification as this yielded the most significant results.

Abstract:
This study seeks to achieve a deeper understanding of the phenomenon of child marriage among Syrian refugees, identify the causes and the consequences of this phenomenon, and explore the relationship between the armed conflict in Syria and the prevalence of child marriage practices among Syrian refugees living in refugee camps in Lebanon. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher used the case study approach and mixed-methods methodology in data collection and analysis. Quantitative data were collected by questionnaire from twenty participants, all women who married before the age of eighteen. Qualitative data were collected through interviews with ten of the participants, all of whom married before the age of eighteen. The findings indicate the contributing role played by the Syrian armed conflict in the prevalence of child marriage practices among Syrian refugees and that Syrian refugees used child marriage as a survival strategy. The results also reveal that there are two types of child marriages: forced and consensual. The study demonstrates that child marriage is a serious violation of children's rights.

Abstract:
Newspapers importantly shape our constructed realities. Based on this assumption, I analysed if and how (Syrian) refugees were represented on 1180 front pages of European newspapers in the period June – October 2015. There were significant differences among the various newspapers in their selection of articles, their pictures and their perspectives. I explained these differences by looking in which country a newspaper was published and whether it was a sensationalist or serious newspapers. Most attention was paid, however, on visual themes that were common to all of them. My research was informed by Grounded Theory and I used other theories from media and communication studies and Communication for Development (ComDev) for the analysis. I related my findings about the reporting on refugees to previous discussions on NGO reporting. I argued that, even though both NGOs and newspapers report about similar issues, there has been a surprising lack of reflection on representations in newspapers. Furthermore, the discussions that emerged in the ComDev-discourse did not seem to have affected newspapers much. Given that newspapers potentially influence many more people, I sought to connect ComDev-discussions to traditional media, which might be a starting point for a more ethic journalism.
