Abstract:
Characterization of ternary complexes of meloxicam-HPβCD and PVP or L-arginine prepared by the spray-drying technique Ternary complexes of meloxicam (ME) (a poorly water soluble anti-inflammatory drug) with hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD) and either a hydrophilic polymer, namely, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) or a basic amino acid such as L-arginine, were prepared by the spray-drying technique. The solubilizing efficiency, physical properties and dissolution behaviour of each ternary system of ME-HPβCD with either PVP or L-arginine were compared with those of the corresponding binary system of ME-HPβCD. Tablets compressed from the ternary system of ME-HPβCD-L-arginine were compared with plain and commercial tablets. Phase solubility experiments suggested the formation of an inclusion complex of AL type. Ternary system of ME-HPβCD-L-arginine exhibited a stability constant 30.3 times higher than the binary system of ME-HPβCD, while the ternary system of ME-HPβCD-PVP increased the stability constant 2.2 times only. The prepared complexes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and infra red spectroscopy. Ternary solid complexes indicated the presence of strong interactions between the components. The dissolution behaviour of ME from different ternary complexes was higher than its dissolution from the binary system. Tablets compressed from ternary complexes of ME-HPβCD-L-arginine highly improved drug release compared to plain and commercial tablets.

Abstract:
The present investigations were undertaken with a view to evaluate Baptisia tinctoria roots (Wild Indigo; family – Fabaceae) systematically for neuropharmacological activities. The methanol extract (ME) of plant was prepared by extracting properly identified plant in a Soxhlet apparatus with methanol, after defatting with n-hexane. Acute toxicity studies revealed that ME is safe for acute administration. Preliminary phytochemical screening of ME showed presence of alkaloids, steroids, flavonoids, triterpenoids, coumarins and tannins as major classes of phytoconstituents. The ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) was prepared by fractionating crude ME using standardized procedure, which showed presence of flavonoids, alkaloids and triterpenoids. ME (400 mg/kg) and EAF (106 mg/kg) produced significant antistress activity in similar manner as exhibited by the standard drug. The ME and EAF exhibited mild antianxiety activity, and were found to be devoid of anticonvulsant, sedative and analgesic activities.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Lactobacillus casei can metabolize l-malic acid via malolactic enzyme (malolactic fermentation [MLF]) or malic enzyme (ME). Whereas utilization of l-malic acid via MLF does not support growth, the ME pathway enables L. casei to grow on l-malic acid. In this work, we have identified in the genomes of L. casei strains BL23 and ATCC 334 a cluster consisting of two diverging operons, maePE and maeKR, encoding a putative malate transporter (maeP), an ME (maeE), and a two-component (TC) system belonging to the citrate family (maeK and maeR). Homologous clusters were identified in Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Streptococcus uberis. Our results show that ME is essential for l-malic acid utilization in L. casei. Furthermore, deletion of either the gene encoding the histidine kinase or the response regulator of the TC system resulted in the loss of the ability to grow on l-malic acid, thus indicating that the cognate TC system regulates and is essential for the expression of ME. Transcriptional analyses showed that expression of maeE is induced in the presence of l-malic acid and repressed by glucose, whereas TC system expression was induced by l-malic acid and was not repressed by glucose. DNase I footprinting analysis showed that MaeR binds specifically to a set of direct repeats [5′-TTATT(A/T)AA-3′] in the mae promoter region. The location of the repeats strongly suggests that MaeR activates the expression of the diverging operons maePE and maeKR where the first one is also subjected to carbon catabolite repression.

Abstract:
<p>Scarcity of water is one of the most important problems of irrigated farming. Safe use of contaminated water and waste-water needs continuous monitoring of the water quality and its influence on the irrigated lands and cultivated crops. The Ingulets irrigation system is one of the main systems, which supplies with water fields of Kherson and Mykolaiv regions of Ukraine. The water is contaminated by the effluent disposals and wastes of the metallurgic factories. The new water quality improvement technique was introduced in the Ingulets irrigation system in 2010. The study is dedicated to agricultural assessment of the Ingulets irrigation system water quality with the new amelioration technique by using the FAO and DSTU 2730-94 criteria. It was established, that water quality in the Ingulets irrigation system is still poor, though it becomes better each year since 2010 till nowadays. Total dissoluble salts content in the water is 1489-2280 mg/L, toxic ions content in eCl<sup>-</sup> is 10.49-21.63 me/L, sodium adsorption ratio is 4.33-7.94 me/L, sodium percentage is 46.4-58.9%, magnesium to calcium ratio is 1.03-1.68, power of hydrogen is 7.31-8.72 in the period from 2007 to 2017. So, the Ingulets irrigation system water requires further amelioration to become safe and suitable for irrigation without any restrictions. Short-term forecast of the water quality by using the triple exponential smoothing with handling of the seasonal effects with multiplicative method of the Holt-Winters algorithm showed that significant improvement of the water quality by some criteria should be achieved till 2025: total dissoluble salts content in the water should be 1212 mg/L, toxic ions content in eCl<sup>-</sup> should be 6.61 me/L, sodium adsorption ratio should be 4.31 me/L, sodium percentage should be 49.3%, magnesium to calcium ratio should be 1.05, power of hydrogen should be 8.05 in 2025. </p>

Lucas proposed that Godel's theorem made possible a refutation of mechanism—the thesis that mind is wholly comprehensible as a consistent, rule-governed machine. A sympathetic reading of Lucas's argument might run something as follows: ‘If I am a machine then it will be possible in principle to give a specification of the consistent formal system, L, that represents me. If this formal system were handed to me, I would be able to prove a Gödel sentence, G, which L could not generate—that is, L could not model my proving G. But since I have proved G, L is inadequate as a model of my cognitive process.’

Abstract:
The work has examined the influence of slow disintegrating fertilizer rates of Scotts (Osmocote Exact) formulation 15:9:9:MgO + Me on quality of Gazania rigens L. seedlings. The seedlings of Gazania rigens L. was produced in polystyrene containers (speedling system) and polypropylene pots (pot system). During the production of seedlings the fertilizer has been applied in rates (0, 1, 2, 3, and 4g/l). The results show that the fertilizer rate of substrata 4g/l influences the qualitative properties of Gazania rigens L. seedlings.

Abstract:
In a multi-enterprise agriculture model, six different cropping systems have been evaluated at research farm of CSSRI Karnal for nutrient availability in surface soil. All the cropping systems left tremendous effect on soil quality. Among the different cropping systems, sorghum-berseem maintained lowest soil pH (8.14) followed by cowpea-cauliflower-potato cropping system (8.35). Sorghum-berseem cropping system was significantly build-up of soil fertility in terms of available nitrogen, (221.1kg/ha) and soil organic carbon (0.59%) as compared to other cropping systems. However, phosphorus (59.80 kg/ha) availability was higher in vegetable system followed by wheat-green gram cropping systems (48.85 kg/ha) than the other cropping systems. Vegetable system of multi-enterprise agriculture model showed more availability of Ca (3.20 me/L), Mg (2.63 me/L) and S (11.71 me/L) than other cropping systems. Higher amount of Fe (8.44 mg/kg) was observed in maize-wheat-green gram cropping system, whereas higher Mn (6.37 mg/kg) was noticed in sorghum-berseem fodder system than the other cropping system. Zn and Cu availability was relatively higher in vegetable system. Under prevailing climatic conditions of Karnal, sorghum-berseem fodder system was found to be the best with respect to soil quality and ready adaptability by the farmers as it was not much changed by climatic variability over the last 6 years. Vegetable system and fruits + vegetable were more or less similar in accelerating the availability of nutrients. Thus, leguminous crop (green gram) in any cropping system helped in improving the soil health, which is a good indicator of soil productivity.

The aim of this research was to increase sum of total rat’s leucocytes and macrophages using Coriolus versicolor exposure 2-Methoxythanol (2-ME). Coriolus versicolor extract have been primary active compounds are polysaccharide krestin (PSK). This compound PSK contains of ß-glucan. The immune cells had b-glucan receptor. From this reason, Coriolus versicolor extract could increase of immune system after exposed 2-ME. This research used 30 of 3–4 month female rats, and they were divided into 5 groups. K (control), P1 (exposed by 2-ME), P2 (administered with Coriolus versicolor extract before exposed by 2-ME), P3 (administered with Coriolus versicolor extract after exposed by 2-ME), P4 (administered with Coriolus versicolor extract before and after exposed by 2-ME). Coriolus versicolor extract used dose of 300 mg/kg body weight was given with gavage. 2-ME dose of 11 mmol/kg body weight was given with injection at cavum peritoneum. Number on leucocytes and macrophages counted by using Haemocytometer Improved Neubauer. The data was analyzed with ANOVA, further more if any differences were analyzed with LSD. Result of this study showed that (1) P1 decreased on the total number of leucocytes if compared with K, but increased on the total number of macrophage. (2) P2, P3, and P4 increased the total number of leucocytes and macrophage. Suggestion that can be proposed from this research was Coriolus versicolor extract can repair and increase immune system.

Abstract:
AbstractThe effectiveness of microspore embryogenesis (ME) is determined by a complex network of internal and environmental factors. In the present study on triticale and barley, strong positive correlation (r = 0.85) between the generation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and ME effectiveness confirmed the important role of reactive oxygen species in microspore reprogramming. However, for high effectiveness of ME induction, intensive H2O2 generation had to be associated with high activity of antioxidative enzymes, superoxide dismutase and catalase. The strong seasonal effect on the physiological status of microspores revealed in the study suggests a kind of ‘biological clock’ controlling plant reproduction, crucial for microspore viability and embryogenic potential. Although the effect of various modifications of ME-inducing stress tiller pre-treatment was determined mainly by the physiological condition of microspores, at higher stress intensity positive effects induced by antioxidant molecules—reduced glutathione and its precursor, l-2-oxothiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid—were observed. High level of variation in the response to ME-inducing stress tiller pre-treatment was also revealed between the two DH lines of triticale and two cultivars of barley and among microspores isolated from subsequently developed spikes.

Aim. The paper studies the dynamics of the indicators defi ning the antioxidant system (AOS) and endogenous intoxication in patients with microbial eczema (ME) prior to and following treatment.Materials and methods. The experimental group consisted of patients with ME (n=30) and the control group comprising somatically healthy individuals (n=30). In this study, we determined the components of the antioxidant defence system in blood plasma and erythrocyte suspension, as well as assessed endogenous intoxication.Results. The study revealed an imbalance of indicators refl ecting the severity of oxidative stress and endogenous intoxication in patients suffering from ME. Prior to receiving treatment, the experimental group, as compared to the control group, exhibited an increase in catalase activity (CAT) up to 35.93 [32.50; 38.22] mmol / (min • l) (p < 0.001) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) up to 1194.27 [1069.50; 1375.78] μmol / (min • l) (p < 0.001). In addition, there was a decrease in the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) to 13.28 [11.35; 14.10] u/l (p < 0.001), glutathione reductase (GR) to 501.46 [479.77; 542.52] mmol / (min • l) (p < 0.001) and the concentration of reduced glutathione to 1.64 [1.59; 1.78] μmol / ml (p = 0.043). We observed no statistically signifi cant changes in the total antioxidant activity (TAA) of blood plasma (0.59 [0.55;0.62] mg/l; р = 0.375) and the sulphhydryl groups (0.44 [0.41;0.47] ODU; р =0.111). The patients with ME exhibited the syndrome of endogenous intoxication (SEI), accompanied by an increase in the content of medium and low molecular weight molecules in plasma to 12.19 [11.20; 13.37] arb. u. (p < 0.001), with their content in erythrocytes being relatively normal – 15.23 [14.26; 16.44] arb. u. (p = 0.005). Following the treatment, changes in the studied parameters were of a multidirectional character in relation to the control values. An increased level of CAT and GPx (р <0,001), as well as lower values of SOD and GR, continued to be observed (р < 0.001). The TAA in serum (p = 0.308), sulphhydryl groups (p = 0.111) and reduced glutathione (p = 0.107) did not differ signifi cantly from the control values. The treatment did not reverse the SEI: the content of medium and low molecular weight molecules continued to increase in both plasma and erythrocytes, as compared to the control values (p < 0.001 in both cases).Conclusion. The obtained data confi rm the failure of mechanisms underlying antioxidant defence in patients with ME. Despite the attempt of its compensation by increasing the catalase activity, SOD control values were still not reached. An increase in the GPx activity along with a decrease in GR was observed, which could have lead, in turn, to a decrease in the concentration of reduced glutathione. The failure of the antioxidant defence mechanisms is also indicated by an increase in the content of medium and low molecular weight molecules, as well as by the development of the SEI, resulting from the excessive formation of reactive oxygen species and the inability of the antioxidant system to neutralise them.

Abstract:
In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effects of formic acid on the in vitro methane production and in vitro ruminal fermentation of alfalfa hay. Effect of 0.0 (control group: YF0), 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 ml/L (experimental groups: YF1, YF2, YF3, YF4, and YF5 respectively) formic acid (Amasil85-liquid) addition to rumen fluid on ruminal fermentation parameters of alfalfa hay were determined by using in vitro gas production techniques. Methane production of in vitro incubation increased (to about 20%) with addition of linearly increased formic acid. Linearly increased levels of formic acid addition to rumen fluid has significantly changed the production of in vitro total gas production, metabolic energy (ME) and organic matter digestibility (OMD) at linear, quadratic and cubic. The addition of 0.1 ml/L and 0.2 ml/L formic acid to rumen fluid significantly decreased in vitro total gas production, ME and OMD however addition of 0.3 ml/L and 0.4 ml/L formic acid was not changed in vitro gas production, ME and OMD levels and 0.5 ml/L formic acid was significantly increased all these parameters. Ruminal pH was not changed by addition of formic acid. Formic acid is a safe feed additive because of its properties antibacterial and flavorings and also is used as a fermentation promoter in silage. In this study it has been observed that all doses of formic acid increased in vitro enteric methane production and low doses decreased in vitro total gas production, ME and OMD and high doses have increased all these parameters. High doses have a positive effect on ME and OMD; however formic acid should be used at limited levels in diets due to the negative effect of increasing greenhouse gases. The effect of formic acid addition to the feed raw matter and rations of all livestock would be beneficial to investigate in terms of digestive system parameters and global warming, further in vitro and in vivo studies.

Abstract Thyroid hormones (THs) are transported across cell membranes by different transmembrane transporter proteins. In previous studies, we showed marked 3,3′-diiodothyronine (3,3′-T2) but moderate T3 uptake by the L-type amino acid transporter 2 (Lat2). We have now studied the structure-function relationships of this transporter and TH-like molecules. Our Lat2 homology model is based on 2 crystal structures of the homologous 12-transmembrane helix transporters arginine/agmatine antiporter and amino acid/polyamine/organocation transporter. Model-driven mutagenesis of residues lining an extracellular recognition site and a TH-traversing channel identified 9 sensitive residues. Using Xenopus laevis oocytes as expression system, we found that side chain shortening (N51S, N133S, N248S, and Y130A) expanded the channel and increased 3,3′-T2 transport. Side chain enlargements (T140F, Y130R, and I137M) decreased 3,3′-T2 uptake, indicating channel obstructions. The opposite results with mutations maintaining (F242W) or impairing (F242V) uptake suggest that F242 may have a gating function. Competitive inhibition studies of 14 TH-like compounds revealed that recognition by Lat2 requires amino and carboxylic acid groups. The size of the adjacent hydrophobic group is restricted. Bulky substituents in positions 3 and 5 of the tyrosine ring are allowed. The phenolic ring may be enlarged, provided that the whole molecule is flexible enough to fit into the distinctly shaped TH-traversing channel of Lat2. Taken together, the next Lat2 features were identified 1) TH recognition site; 2) TH-traversing channel in the center of Lat2; and 3) switch site that potentially facilitates intracellular substrate release. Together with identified substrate features, these data help to elucidate the molecular mechanisms and role of Lat2 in T2 transport.

ABSTRACT We have detected significant amounts of corticotrophin-releasing factor-41 (CRF-41) in the rat hypothalamo-neurointermediate lobe system using a radioimmunoassay and reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Total amounts of CRF-41 in extracts of median eminence (ME), supraoptic nucleus (SON), paraventricular nucleus (PVN) and neurointermediate lobe (NIL) from control animals were 1076 ± 132, 196 ± 44, 22 ± 7 and 147 ± 50 fmol respectively (means ± s.e.m., n = 6). In animals given 340 mmol NaCl/l instead of tap water to drink for 12 days, no significant changes occurred in the CRF-41 content of the ME, SON or PVN, but CRF-41 content increased more than twofold in the NIL (362 ± 58 fmol). Plasma concentrations of CRF-41 and ACTH in control animals were 23 ± 6 and 51 ± 8 pmol/l respectively. After saline treatment no significant change in plasma CRF-41 was detected (20 ± 8 pmol/l) but concentrations of circulating ACTH were decreased (15 ± 2 pmol/l). The CRF-41 content of both the ME and the NIL was significantly depleted after intracerebroventricular injection of colchicine (414 ± 81 and 34 ± 7 fmol respectively). Abstract:
A field pilot test was conducted on a macro-electrolysis/biological filter with immobilized microorganism system (ME/I-BF) in the Liaohe oilfield, China to treat super heavy oil wastewater with large amounts of dissolved recalcitrant organic compounds and low nutrients of nitrogen and phosphorus. By operating the system for 155 days (including the start-up of 28 days), the BOD/COD ratio of water increases from 0.13 to 0.22 and the COD removal rate is 47.46% after the ME treatment. Then, the COD decreases to 100 mg/L and the COD removal rate is 80.96% after I-BF treatment. When indigenous microorganisms inoculated, the effluent gets better, COD decreases to 70 mg/L and the removal rate of COD increases to 88.54%. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) indicated that the super heavy oil wastewater contains 11 organic compounds and most of them are removed after treatment. This integrated system is a useful option for the treatment of heavy oil wastewater.

Heated tobacco products (HTP) were introduced to the world market as an alternative to conventional tobacco cigarettes. Active advertising, readily available to purchase and the public's perception that HTP are a safer alternative to conventional tobacco cigarettes lead to increasing their consumption by young age group in Ukraine. Despite the claims by the tobacco corporations about reduction of adverse effects the HTP on the activity of cardiovascular system, the published studies of potential vascular endothelial consequences were not found. Therefore, the aim of our study is to assess the HTP effect on vascular endothelial cells by determination of the nitrate, nitrite, S-nitrosothiols, and endothelin-1 levels in saliva of smoking adolescents. The object and research methods. Thirty adolescents aged 14-17 years old were divided to three groups. Group I was introduced by ten healthy non-smoking adolescents (control group). Group II consists of ten smoking adolescents have smoked the IQOS for two years. Group III is formed by ten smoking adolescents who have smoked the IQOS for three years. The salivary nitrate and nitrite levels were measured using the Griess assay such as an indicator of NO production. The salivary S-nitrosothiols were measured spectrophotometrically. The salivary endothelin-1 level was measured with ELISA kit. Statistical analysis of the data was carried out using the STATISTICA 7.0 program. The data were presented as Median values (Me), lower and upper quartile, i.e. Me [Lq; Uq]. Statistical significance was accepted if p < 0.05. Results. The salivary nitrate concentrations in groups II (Me = 14.11 [13.98; 14.52] μmol/l) and III (Me = 12.06 [11.44; 12.31] μmol/l) were significantly decreased compared to group I (Me = 15.89 [14.98; 16.89] μmol/l, KW test: H = 23.59, p=0.000. The values of nitrite in groups II and III were the following: Me = 2.32 [1.47; 2.48] μmol/l and 1.37 [1.25; 1.44] μmol/l, respectively. The indices were lower in 1.41 and 2.36 times than in group I: Me = 3. 24 [3.05; 3.78] μmol/l, KW test: Н = 22.92, p = 0.000. The levels of salivary S-nitrosothiols in group II are: Me = 1.02 [0.84; 1.27] μmol/l and group III Me = 0.36 [0.25; 0.62] μmol/l were reduced in 1.75 and 4.97 times compared to group I: Me = 1.79 [1.67; 1.97] μmol/l, KW test: Н = 24.46, р = 0.000. We assume that the reduction of salivary nitrate and nitrite concentrations is associated with a low level of S-nitrosothiols which serve as deposited and released nitric oxide (NO). Probably, the decrease of nitrates and nitrites is associated with the inhibition of endothelial NO synthase. The salivary endothelin-1 level was significantly higher in group II: Ме=0.58 [0.53; 0.73] pmol/ml and in group III: Ме = 0.82 [0.79; 0.93] pmol/ml than in group I: Ме = 0.17 [0.14; 0.26] pmol/ml, KW test: Н = 23.94, р = 0.000. It should be noted, the significant differences between data of nitrate, nitrite, S-nitrosothiol and endothelin-1 content in groups II and III were found (Mann-Whitney U test, nitrates - Z = 3.62, p = 0.000; nitrites - Z = 2.91 , p = 0.003; S-nitrosothiols - Z = 3.74, p = 0.00; endothelin-1 - Z = 3.36, p = 0.000). These results showed interrelation between adverse IQOS effect on vascular endothelium of adolescents duration of IQOS smoke. Conclusions. The adverse effect of heated tobacco product (IQOS) on the biochemical indicators of the vascular endothelium function of adolescents was found in our experimental study. The salivary nitrate, nitrite and S-nitrosothiols levels were significantly decreased in IQOS smoking adolescents. The salivary endothelin-1 content was significantly elevated in IQOS smoking adolescents. The revealed changes indicate the endothelial dysfunction in young smokers. The development of pathological processes in the vascular endothelium depends on the smoking duration.

The paper investigates the effect of applying different rate of slow disintegrating fertilizer Scotts (Osmocot Exact) with the formula 15:9:9:MgO+Me to the quality of seedlings of marigold and scarlet sage. The marigold and scarlet sage seedlings were grown in poly-propylene containers (speedling system) and poly-propylene pots (pot system). Slow disintegrating fertilizer rate have been applied to the seedlings in the course of their growing (0, 1, 2, 3, i 4 g/l). The obtained data show that the 4g/l substrate rate of slow disintegrating fertilizer has significant effects on the studied parameters of seedlings quality of studied species.

The effects of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1) on L-proline uptake in human skin fibroblasts were investigated. Exposure of the fibroblasts to IL-1 (5, 10 or 50 pg/ml) for 2 h did not change L-proline uptake. In contrast, inhibition was observed after 6 h of IL-1 treatment, and only 60% of the control uptake remained after incubation for 24 h with 10 pg of IL-1/ml. IL-1 depressed the activity of both transfer systems; the low-affinity system inhibited by alpha-(methylamino)isobutyric acid (Me-AIB), corresponding to system A, and a high-affinity transfer system which is unaffected by Me-AIB. The inhibitory effect increased as the L-proline concentration decreased. To determine whether IL-1-induced prostaglandin release influences proline uptake, indomethacin (14 microM) was added as a cyclo-oxygenase inhibitor. Indomethacin itself decreased L-proline uptake but to a lesser extent than did IL-1. When IL-1 was tested in the presence of indomethacin, the inhibition of L-proline uptake was still observed, with values between those obtained with each substance in isolation. This suggests that the inhibitory effect of IL-1 on proline uptake by skin fibroblast does not only involve the prostaglandins that accumulate in the medium, but no firm conclusion can be drawn, due to the fact that the inhibition by the two agents was not statistically independent. Kinetic analyses for 1 min combined with inhibition experiments showed that IL-1 induced a decrease in the Km and Vmax, values of the high-affinity transport system, whereas it increased the Km of system A. Therefore the two systems of proline uptake in skin fibroblasts are probably inhibited by IL-1 via different mechanisms.

The ARC (1980) energy system sees growth in the single dimension of energy retention (ER) which increases, with diminishing marginal efficiency, as ME intake increases. The quantitative relationship between ME intake and ER is predicted from q, the proportion of the gross energy which is metabolisable. An experiment on growing sheep on controlled feeding of different feeds was carried out to provide data suitable for testing ARC (1980) and other energy systems.Scottish Blackface wether sheep in single pens, entered the experiment at 25 kg liveweight (LW), when 11 were slaughtered. The remainder were allocated to 3 x 3 x 3 treatments with an intended 4 replicates per treatment. The factors were (i) feeds: feeds B, U and M shown in Table 1, (ii) levels of feeding. L, M and H where H was 936 g/d at 25 kg and was increased by 52 g/d each week, L was half H and M half-way between L and H, (iii) slaughter point, after 9 or 18 weeks, or at 40 kg liveweight.

Abstract:
The paper discusses the contribution of crop residues (CR) to feed resources in the context of the water productivity of CR in livestock feeding, using India as an example. It is argued that crop residues are already the single most important feed resource in many livestock production systems in developing countries and that increasing their contribution to livestock feeding needs to be linked to improving their fodder quality. Using examples from multi-dimensional crop improvement, it is shown that CR fodder quality of key crops such as sorghum, rice and groundnut can be improved by genetic enhancement without detriment to grain and pod yields. Improving crop residue quality through genetic enhancement, agronomic and management interventions and strategic supplementation could improve water productivity of farms and systems considerably. The draw-backs of CR based feeding regimes are also pointed out, namely that they result in only moderate levels of livestock productivity and produce higher greenhouse gas emissions than are observed under feeding regimes that are based on high quality forages and concentrates. It is argued that feed metabolisable energy (ME) content should be used as an important determinant of livestock productivity; water requirement for feed and fodder production should be related to a unit of feed ME rather than feed bulk. The paper also revisits data from the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) work on livestock–water productivity in the Indian state of Gujarat, showing that water input per unit ME can vary several-fold in the same feed depending on where the feed is produced. Thus, the production of one mega joule of ME from alfalfa required 12.9 L of irrigation-derived water in south Gujarat but 50.7 L of irrigation-derived water in north Gujarat. Wheat straw in south Gujarat required 20.9 L of irrigation-derived water for 1 MJ ME and was in this instance less water use efficient than alfalfa. We conclude that water use efficiency across feed and fodder classes (for example crop residue v. planted forages) and within a feed is highly variable. Feeding recommendations should be made according to specific water use requirement per unit ME in a defined production system.

Abstract An innovative, rapid, and simple dual-dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DDLL-ME) approach was used to extract uranium from real samples for the first time. The main objective of this study was to disperse extraction solvent by using an air-agitated syringe system to overcome matrix effects and avoid dispersion of hazardous dispersive organic solvents by using heat. The DDLL-ME method consisted of two dispersive liquid–liquid extraction steps with chloroform as the extracting solvent. Uranium formed complexes with 4-(2-thiazolylazo) resorcinol in the aqueous phase and was extracted in extracting solvent (chloroform) after the first dispersive liquid–liquid process. Uranium was then back-extracted in the acidic aqueous phase in a second dispersive liquid–liquid process. Finally, uranium was determined by a spectrophotometric detection technique. The variables that played a key role in the proposed method were studied and optimized. The LOD and sensitivity enhancement factor for uranium were found to be 0.60 µg/L and 45, respectively, under optimized conditions. Calibration graphs were found to be linear in the range of 5.0–600 µg/L. The RSD was 2.5%. Reliability of the proposed method was verified by analyzing certified reference material TM-28.3.

Testosterone exerts both beneficial and harmful effects on the cardiovascular system. Considering that testosterone induces reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and ROS activate cell death signaling pathways, we tested the hypothesis that testosterone induces apoptosis in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) via mitochondria-dependent ROS generation. Potential mechanisms were addressed. Cultured VSMCs were stimulated with testosterone (10−7 mol/l) or vehicle (2–12 h) in the presence of flutamide (10−5 mol/l), CCCP (10−6 mol/l), mimetic manganese(III) tetrakis(1-methyl-4-pyridyl)porphyrin (MnTMPyP; 3 × 10−5 mol/l), Z-Ile-Glu(O-ME)-Thr-Asp(O-Me) fluoromethyl ketone (Z-IETD-FMK; 10−5 mol/l), or vehicle. ROS were determined with lucigenin and dichlorodihydrofluorescein; apoptosis, with annexin V and calcein; O2 consumption, with a Clark-type electrode, and procaspases, caspases, cytochrome c, Bax, and Bcl-2 levels by immunoblotting. Testosterone induced ROS generation (relative light units/mg protein, 2 h; 162.6 ± 16 vs. 100) and procaspase-3 activation [arbitrary units, (AU), 6 h; 166.2 ± 19 vs. 100]. CCCP, MnTMPyP, and flutamide abolished these effects. Testosterone increased annexin-V fluorescence (AU, 197.6 ± 21.5 vs. 100) and decreased calcein fluorescence (AU, 34.4 ± 6.4 vs. 100), and O2 consumption (nmol O2/min, 18.6 ± 2.0 vs. 34.4 ± 3.9). Testosterone also reduced Bax-to-Bcl-2 ratio but not cytochrome- c release from mitochondria. Moreover, testosterone (6 h) induced cleavage of procaspase 8 (AU, 161.1 ± 13.5 vs. 100) and increased gene expression of Fas ligand (2ΔΔCt, 3.6 ± 1.2 vs. 0.7 ± 0.5), and TNF-α (1.7 ± 0.4 vs. 0.3 ± 0.1). CCCP, MnTMPyP, and flutamide abolished these effects. These data indicate that testosterone induces apoptosis in VSMCs via the extrinsic apoptotic pathway with the involvement of androgen receptor activation and mitochondria-generated ROS.

One effective bromoamine acid (BAA) degrading strain FL was isolated previously with the ability to use BAA as the sole source of carbon and energy. The strain FL was applied in a combined process of microelectrolysis (ME) and biological aerated filter (BAF) to treat the bromoamine acid wastewater, and the treatment efficiency was investigated. It was shown that when the influent CODcr was lower than 1000 mg L-1, and the total hydrolytic retention time (HRT) was 37.7 h, the removal rate of chrominance and CODcr could reach 95.3% and 77.3% respectively. Most of the chrominance was removed by the ME treatment, while the removal of CODcr is mostly owned to the BAF treatment. After long-term contact with the BAA wastewater, the strain FL became one of the predominent species in BAF. When the system was subjected to hydraulic loading shock, the strain FL ensured the efficient removal of chrominance and BAA.

Magnetoelectric (ME) coupling effects in multiferroic materials have attracted much attention in recent times because of the intriguing science underpinning this phenomena and being currently intense interest in the implementation of this coupling in an electronic devices. A new multiferroic system comprising of BaTiO3 (BTO) and BaFe12O19 (BHF) has been synthesized as a bulk nanocomposite system in variation of weight fraction of BTO : BHF =1:1, 1:2 and 1:3 and the second sinter temperature was 925°C for 5, 10 and 15 hours. The presence of both phases were confirmed by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) studies and MPS Magnet Physik EP3 Permagraph L was used to characterize magnetic properties.The morphology and particle size of nanocomposite was characterized by using Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). No residual phases were identified in the XRD analysis for all parameters confirming the formation of a BTO-BHF composite system. The TEM images show that all samples have particle in nanosize.For weight fraction of BHF until 2 parts there is an increase of intrinsic coersive and magnetization saturation value. If the weight fraction of BHF exceeds from 2 parts, the coersivity and saturation values decrease. Meanwhile in compound of polyvinyl acetate (PVA) and BHF as a compare material, the magnetic properties increase with increasing the content of BHF until 3 parts. From the above results, it presumes that the nanocomposites with weight fraction of BTO : BHF = 1:3 for all time of sintering have ME coupling interaction showing a multiferroic nature. To give evidence of this phenomena, it needs a measurement of ME coupling coefficients for all parameters.

Background. The diseases leading to the need for lung transplantation include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, idiopathic pulmonary hypertension, histiocytosis X, and sarcoidosis. Primary lung transplant dysfunction is a frequent complication after transplantation and represents a multifactorial injury of the transplanted lung, its pathogenesis being associated with a severe hypoxemia of the lung transplant and diffused damage to the alveoli. The clinical presentation is in many ways similar to an acute respiratory distress syndrome, which pathogenesis is primarily effected by the activation of immune system cells. The cytokine production by immunocompetent cells, the synthesis of reactive oxygen and nitrous oxide, being the mediators of inflammation, trigger inflammatory processes in the lungs; the immunoglobulin synthesis derangements also lead to the development of inflammatory abnormalities in the lungs and a poor transplantation outcome.The objective was to study the immunological response in the lung transplant recipients suffering from the underlying disease of various etiology and to determine the immunological predictors of adverse outcome in the early period after bilateral lung transplantation.Material and methods. Twenty nine patients were examined within 2 weeks after lung transplantation: Group 1 comprised 10 patients with cystic fibrosis (6 women, 4 men) aged 27.8 ± 2.7 years; Group 2 included 19 patients (7 women, 12 men) at the age of 38.5 ± 10.4 years having other lung diseases. Mortality was 10% (1 patient) in Group 1, and 52.5% (10 patients) in Group 2. The patients were followed-up according to the standard protocol of postoperative treatment and immunosuppression therapy shemes. Immunological monitoring included the lymphocyte phenotyping, and the assessment of phagocytic activity of neutrophils, the HCT-test, the blood levels of immunoglobulins (Ig) A, M, G, circulating immune complexes, and C-reactive protein. Statistical significance was assessed at p <0.05.Results. On day 5, the T-lymphocyte count in patients of Group 1 was 674 cells/μL (Me), which was 26.7% lower than lower limit of the reference range, but 2.5 times higher than that in patients of Group 2 (266 cells/μL). The number of T-lymphocytes in patients of the 2nd group was recorded at 71.1% below the lower limit of the reference interval (p < 0.05). The blood level of IgA (Me) in patients of Group 1 was within the normal range (Ме– 1.9 g/L), the blood level of IgA (Me) in patients of Group 2 was 1.4 g/L, which was 26.3% lower than below the lower limit of the reference values and lower than in Group 1 (p < 0.05).By day 13, the count of T-lymphocytes in Group 1 had increased 2.2 times compared to day 5, reaching the reference values (Me), and made 1479 cells/μL. In the 2nd group, there was a 1.5-fold increase in T-lymphocyte count (Me 408 cells/μL), which was 3.7 times lower than the lower limit of the reference range and lower than in the 1st group (p < 0.05). The level of IgA in patients of the 1st group increased by 20.8% and amounted to 2.4 g/L (Me), and in patients of the 2nd group, the level of IgA for 2 weeks remained almost unchanged (Me 1.5 g/L ) and was 1.7 times lower than in the 1st group (p < 0.05).Conclusions. On day 5 after transplantation, the patients with cystic fibrosis demonstrated the increase in the T-lymphocyte count and IgA level by 2.5 and 1.4 times, respectively, compared to the patients with other lung diseases. By the end of week 2, T-lymphocyte and IgA values in patients with cystic fibrosis, unlike patients with other lung diseases, had reached the reference range. The T-lymphocyte count and the concentration of IgA below the reference range in the first 2 weeks after lung transplantation were the immunological predictors of adverse outcome.

Abstract:
The spin crossover compound [FeIIH2L2-Me][PF6]2 presents a two-step phase transition. In the intermediate phase, a spin state concentration wave (SSCW) appears resulting from a symmetry breaking (cell doubling) associated with a long-range order of alternating high and low spin molecular states. By combining time-resolved optical and X-ray diffraction measurements on a single crystal, we study how such a system responds to femtosecond laser excitation and we follow in real time the erasing and rewriting of the SSCW.

Abstract:
Because hospitals in Taiwan now place a lot of emphasis on hospital accreditation, leading to a heavy workload for nurses, nurses are unintentional involved in patient medication errors (MEs). In this research, we explore the possible correlation between psychophysiological responses of nursing staff and a hospital management model regarding MEs. We conducted a cross-sectional study design in one hospital in central Taiwan. A total of 345 nurses at Tali Jen-Ai Hospital l were selected. A questionnaire was chosen as the study instrument. The questionnaire asked the following information: basic data, classification of MEs, frequency and severity of psychophysiological responses, and information about the hospital’s management model and support system. We found that the hospital management model had a significant negative correlation with the frequency of physiological symptoms (r = -0.14, p < .01). Likewise, the support system also had a substantial negative correlation with the scores of the physiological symptom, behavioral responses, and psychophysiological responses. Using multiple regression analysis adjusted for work duration, job title, and degree of injury, we found that the support system was significantly correlated with the nurses’ psychophysiological responses. Both the hospital management and the support system decreased the psychophysiological responses of the nurses. Therefore, we recommend that supervisors implement a management strategy to deal specifically with MEs. When nurse managers have frequently empathy and no-blame attitude to replace disrespectful or skeptical ways to nurse with ME, they will empower their enthusiasm and responsibility to improve the reduction of ME.

Arrays of open-pollinated seeds were assayed for allozyme polymorphisms at four loci (Mdh-1, Me, 6Pg-2, and Pgm) to obtain estimates of outcrossing rates for three eastern white cedar populations in northwestern Ontario, Canada. Multilocus population outcrossing rate estimates were low, ranging from 0.507 to 0.745, with significant heterogeneity among populations. Low stand densities and relatively high selfed embryo survival may have contributed to the low effective outcrossing rates observed. Single-tree multilocus outcrossing rate estimates were obtained for nine trees from one population. When estimated jointly with outcross pollen pool allele frequencies, these outcrossing rate estimates ranged from 0.253 to 1.023 with significant heterogeneity among trees.
