Abstract:
SummaryDue to a perceived need for better information on the occurrence and repair of equine fractures, we developed a system designed to gather data on an interinstitutional basis. Fundamental to our task was the creation of a system of classifying the injuries most commonly treated by internal fixation, but including other fracture forms as well. The initial ("paper") documentation system, designed along the lines of the existing AO/ASIF Human format was praised by pilot study participants for its thoroughness and relevance, but individual clinician compliance was low due to the system’s length and complexity. The present ("diskette") version was designed for use with the Apple Macintosh, and was later modified for IBM PCs and their clones. It is currently being distributed to participating AO/ASIF Vet member clinics. The AO/ASIF EFDS was designed with a view toward crossover with existing human and developing small animal systems. As such it should provide an important building block for efforts in veterinary comparative orthopedics and traumatology. The need for a classification of commonly occurring equine fractures was recognized, and a corresponding system developed. Originally conceived on paper with computer-readable sheets, the system was later modified to be committed to diskettes. In its current form, the system is in use documenting the outcome of repair of exercise induced fractures. Updates will incorporate other (e.g. long bone) fractures, and long-term follow-up data.

Abstract:
The United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) manages the National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS). The USDA's National Genetic Resources Program was created in 1990, using the NPGS as the model by which other life forms would also be preserved and utilized. While the NPGS is a broadly defined system, ARS has a specific role of acquiring, characterizing, preserving, documenting, and distributing germplasm to scientist users for research and breeding. The NPGS provides genetic resources to users at no cost but with a request to return data to incorporate in the Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) database. The database is available as hard copy, diskette through PC-GRIN, and, for some crops, a CD-ROM disk. Service to users is the primary objective. The NPGS and 40 crop advisory committees exchange technical information on the most important conservation issues. Recent research advances at the National Seed Storage Laboratory provide guidance for storage management of orthodox and desiccation-sensitive seed and vegetative germplasm. Cryopreservation may receive more attention and play a more important role for the vegetative germplasm because improved seed management under conventional refrigerated storage is now possible. Key words: Germplasm, databases, cryopreservation

Abstract:
In 1985 an extension consumer horticulture computer information system (HORT) was initiated on the Virginia Tech mainframe computer to mitigate the demands on agents' time while providing monthly professional updates and accurate, timely information for use in their local programs. Agents access the information through their office microcomputers, which are linked to the Virginia Tech mainframe computer. Agents can transfer the needed information onto a diskette for reference, immediate use, or further editing or print a hard copy on campus to be mailed to them. Slide sets or videotapes can be ordered from the Virginia Tech Learning Resource Center (LRC) on this system. The monthly releases are available at no charge to anyone in the land-grant system with a BITNET or Internet user identification number.

Abstract:
This article describes the latest version of a computer program, first published in 1982, that attempts to integrate quantitatively the physiological and pharmacological knowledge of the cardiovascular system. This new version incorporates pressure-induced autoregulation of arterioles, distensibility of venous and pulmonary resistances, and some aspects of pericardial constraint on cardiac function. The program allows the researcher or student to explore the complex interactions resulting from changes in a wide variety of cardiovascular parameters and to synthesize the cardiovascular actions of drugs in the human, dog, or cat. The program can be run on an IBM-compatible computer with math coprocessor and with DOS® as the operating system. The program can be modified by licenced users of QuickBasic®. The program is available on diskette from the authors. This model represents our attempt to put together some of the complex interactions within the cardiovascular system. Every relationship, every initialized parameter, and every drug action can be questioned and alternatives can be proposed. However, the model allows these alternatives to be tested and their consequences to be predicted. We believe that the value of the model lies in the thought, discussion, and experiments that can be generated by this process.Key words: computer model, vascular resistance, blood pressure, cardiac output, capacitance, blood volume, catecholmines, heart failure.

Abstract:
In 1988, the Farmer's Bookshelf started out as a computerized information system of crops grown in Hawaii. The first version was created on an Apple Macintosh computer using a hypermedia program called HyperCard. Because HyperCard came with each Macintosh computer, only the crop files needed to be sent to clientele. As the demand for an IBM-compatible version of the Farmer's Bookshelf increased, the Windows version was created using a hypermedia program called Plus. In addition to the crop files, the runtime version of Plus was also distributed to clientele. Later, other files were added to the Farmer's Bookshelf, including files to diagnose problems of macadamia in the field, select ground covers, select landscape trees, recommend fertilization, calculate nut loss for macadamia growers, and calculate turfgrass irrigation. Cost of analysis spread-sheets for several crops were also added. Recently, the Farmer's Bookshelf was moved to the World Wide Web, which has the advantages of reaching a world-wide clientele, easier updating and modifications, and linking to sites of related information. We have added links to newspaper articles on agriculture in Hawaii, to related sites on a particular crop, to on-line agricultural magazines and newsletters, to agricultural software, to upcoming agricultural events, and to Y2K sites. Because of the benefits of the Web version, the diskette versions (Macintosh and Windows) are no longer supported. Putting the Farmer's Bookshelf on the Web has allowed us to better meet the needs of our clientele for up-to-date information.

Full text
Abstract:
World Watch is a nifty little software package for Windows which displays world and regional maps showing cities and the local time for various locations selected by the user. In addition, a dynamic illuminated pattern in the centre of the map shows those areas of the world currently experiencing daylight. The pattern highlights the progress of seasons, displays sunrise and sunset as they happen and automatically adjusts to summer or daylight saving time. World Watch also doubles as a very nice screen saver which utilises all the functions of the program. The package contains a 3.5″ disk and user manual (pretty good), and installing the program is simplicity itself — simply insert the diskette and follow instructions, and in an instant the program is ready for use and/or customisation. There is the possibility to use small fonts (as opposed to the Windows system fonts), though these fonts are not mentioned in the manual. Besides how to operate and customise World Watch, the user manual also provides some technical information on how the program works, a glossary of terms, and the coordinates and time relative to GMT of the cities included in the package.

Tait, Russel J., Alan M. Bond, Barrie C. Finnin, and Barry L. Reed. "Rapid scanning voltammetry under steady-state conditions in a flow through thin layer cell with a microelectrode." Collection of Czechoslovak Chemical Communications 56, no. 1 (1991): 192–205. http://dx.doi.org/10.1135/cccc19910192.

Full text
Abstract:
A microelectrode based detector system has been developed for measurement of steady state voltammetric curves in flowing solutions. Two microprocessors operating in parallel allow the direct transfer of collected data to a floppy diskette. Long term experiments can then be performed, with individual voltammograms being rapidly obtained, recorded and stored. The system can be used with scan rates up to 10 V s-1 and with 1 mV resolution over a potential range of 2.5 V. When a 10 μm diameter micro-disk platinum electrode serves as the working electrode, rapid scan voltammetry (scan rate 1 to 10 V s-1) can be undertaken under steady state conditions for reversible processes with a flow rate in the range of 1 to 3 ml min-1 as evidenced by the observation of sigmoidal rather than the peak shaped curves obtained with previously described rapid scan systems. That is, complete voltammograms can be obtained with minimal distortion due to uncompensated resistance and charging current which is not the case when conventionally sized electrodes are used or when microelectrodes are used at excessively high scan rates where linear diffusion terms become important. The working microelectrodes were developed to suit a conventional thin-layer cell design and therefore permit ready adaptation to existing flow through electrochemical detection systems. The detection limits for the determination of ferrocene in methanol at flow rates up to 3 ml min-1 were 10-6 mol dm-3 after background correction, and the response was found to be linear over the concentration range 10-3 to 10-6 mol dm-3. Three-dimensional methods of data treatment and contour plots can be used to interpret results obtained from steady state or near steady state voltammograms of incompletely resolved chromatograms as demonstrated with range of biologically important compounds.

Hamlin, Gordon A. "The Zymark BenchMate™. A compact, fully-automated solution-phase reaction work-up facility for multiple parallel synthesis." Journal of Automated Methods and Management in Chemistry 22, no. 6 (2000): 181–86. http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/s1463924600000328.

Full text
Abstract:
The rapid growth of multiple parallel synthesis in our laboratories has created a demand for a robust, easily accessed automated system for solution-phase reaction work-up, since the manual work-up of large numbers of small-scale reactions is both time-consuming and tedious, and is a rate limiting step in the generation of large numbers of compounds for test. Work-up in chemical organic synthesis consists of a series of post-reaction operations designed using differential chemical properties to remove excess reagent or starting material, reagent products and, where possible reaction by-products. Careful consideration of post-reaction operations as a clean-up step can obviate the requirement for purification. Generally, work-up can be resolved into four operations: filtration, solvent addition (dilution, trituration), washing and separation (partition) and it is the selection and ordering of these four basic operations that constitutes a chemical work-up. Following the proven success of centralized Zymate robotic systems in the compilation, execution and work-up of complex reaction sequences, a centralized chemical work-up service has been in operation for over 12 months. It now seemed prudent that the needs of multiple parallel synthesis would be better served by the development of a compact, automated system, capable of operating in a standard chemistry laboratory fume-hood. A Zymark BenchMate platform has been configured to perform the four basic operations of chemical solution work-up. A custom-built filtration station, incorporating an integrated tipping facility for the sample tube has also been developed. Compilation of each work-up is through a set of Visual Basic procedure screens, each dedicated to a particular work-up scenario. Methods are compiled at the chemist's own PC and transferred to the BenchMate via a diskette.

Harris, Regina M., Susan G. Hill, and Robert J. Lysaght. "Operator Workload Knowledge-Based Expert System Tool (OWLKNEST) Demonstration." Proceedings of the Human Factors Society Annual Meeting 33, no. 17 (1989): 1140–41. http://dx.doi.org/10.1518/107118189786758049.

Full text
Abstract:
Objectives The Operator Workload Knowledge-based Expert System Tool (OWLKNEST) is a tool that provides guidance in selecting the most appropriate technique(s) for estimating or predicting Operator Workload (OWL). This demonstration will provide hands-on usage for interested parties in utilizing OWLKNEST to determine the most appropriate OWL technique for their particular situation, interpreting the resulting outputs, and performing sensitivity analysis to assess the impact of changing responses. Description of subject matter A variety of OWL estimation techniques are available, but information about these techniques and their appropriateness for particular situations may be difficult to assimilate. Furthermore, information on practical issues concerning the applicability of a particular tool is often unavailable—e.g., time, cost, personnel issues, etc. The selection of the appropriate technique(s) for assessing OWL is complex and beyond the scope of many practitioners. Therefore, an expert system approach was selected to provide a tool which can serve as a clearinghouse of knowledge as well as providing recommendations for workload estimation techniques. OWLKNEST requires an IBM PC type microcomputer equipped with a minimum of 640 Kb memory and two floppy diskette drives of at least 360Kb. Exsys Professional, a rule-based, backward-chaining system, is the expert system shell used for OWLKNEST. OWLKNEST incorporates an hierarchical logic structure that quickly focuses on the most applicable technique(s) and minimizes the number of questions posed by the system. It is based upon a taxonomy which divides OWL techniques into analytical and empirical techniques. OWLKNEST utilizes a question-and-answer dialogue to facilitates use by inexperienced analysts and is supplemented by embedded help features. The inputs are fed into the expert system, which applies rules and knowledge based on user information. The result is a suggested list of appropriate techniques. The user can obtain brief descriptions of the recommended technique(s) including references and descriptions of prior applications. OWLKNEST assumes that users have at least a fundamental knowledge of OWL concepts but can be novice computer and expert system users. The development of OWLKNEST was sponsored by the Army Research Institute and free copies of the runtime version of OWLKNEST are available to interested parties. Additional details about OWLKNEST are available in Hill and Harris, 1989 and Harris et al, 1989. More complete information about utilizing OWLKNEST can be obtained in the user's guide—Handbook for Operation of the OWLKNEST Tool (HOOT) (Harris et al., 1989). Importance The increasing criticality of performing OWL assessments throughout the system development cycle has Id to the recognition that a comprehensive, easy-to-use tool to recommend the appropriate OWL techniques is needed. OWLKNEST provides this capability and supplies information on the appropriate OWL techniques based on individual needs and resources. Possible Applications OWLKNEST will be useful in military application as well as other application areas where prediction and evaluation of operator workload is of interest. Similarly, the workload techniques are not application specific, but can be used in a variety of domains. OWLKNEST can provide the information and guidance of an appropriate selection of workload techniques for a broad range of applications.

Abstract:
This experiment, conducted at the OECD Halden Reactor Project, Halden, Norway in the spring 1991, aimed to assess the effect on nuclear power plant operators diagnostic behaviour when using a rule based diagnostic expert system. The rule based expert system used in the experiment is called DISKET (Diagnosis System Using Knowledge Engineering Technique) and was originally developed by the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI). The experiment was performed in the Halden man-machine laboratory using a full scope pressurized water reactor simulator. Operator performance in terms of quality of diagnosis is improved by the use of DISKET. The use of the DISKET system also influences operators problem solving behaviour. The main difference between the two experimental conditions can be characterised as while the DISKET users during the diagnosis process are following a strategy which is direct and narrowed, the non-DISKET users are using a much broader and less focused search when trying to diagnose a disturbance.

Full text
Abstract:
A computer-controlled automated gas-exchange system was developed to perform repetitive measurements of physiological activities in intact plants. Shoot and root temperatures, flow rates, gas pressures, rates of leaf CO2 and H2O exchange, and rates of CO2 exchange, H2 evolution, and C2H2 reduction by the roots can be determined for four plants in a single experiment. The controlling computer operates 32 switches that control gas flows, sampling devices, lighting, and irrigation and it records and processes analog data from 15 measuring instruments. Rates of physiological activities are calculated automatically and results are printed and stored on diskettes for later plotting or analysis. A wide variety of experimental protocols are possible with little need for computer programming, because the system is controlled by a master program and an interactively developed file of experimental variables. The values recorded from the measuring instruments are proportional (r2 > 0.999) to either independent determinations or to calibration standards and the rates of physiological processes, measured with the system, are reproducible and within expected ranges.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends periodic tuberculin skin testing of healthcare workers with potential exposure to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. However, many healthcare facilities have neither a system to identify workers due for their skin test nor a means of analyzing aggregate data. To illustrate some of the complexities involved in tuberculin skin test (TST) tracking and analysis, and how these might be addressed, this report describes a software package called staffTRAK-TB, developed by the CDC to facilitate surveillance of tuberculosis infection in healthcare workers. staffTRAK-TB records data for each healthcare worker, including demographic information, occupation, work location, multiple TST results, and results of evaluations to determine if clinically active tuberculosis is present. Programmed reports include lists of workers due and overdue for skin tests, and skin test conversion rates by occupation or worksite. Standardization of types of occupations and locations allows data from multiple facilities to be aggregated and compared. Data transfer to the CDC can be performed via floppy diskettes. staffTRAK-TB illustrates important issues in software structure, standardization of occupation and work-location information, relevant data items, and reports and analyses that would be useful in practice. Developing software that adequately addresses the epidemiological issues is complex, and the lessons learned may serve as a model for hospital epidemiologists, infection control personnel, occupational health personnel, and computer programmers considering software development in this area or trying to optimize their facility's TST surveillance.

Petrovič, Dušan. "Long term archiving orienteering maps project in Slovenia." Abstracts of the ICA 1 (July 15, 2019): 1. http://dx.doi.org/10.5194/ica-abs-1-298-2019.

Full text
Abstract:
<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Nowadays we can explore many examples of different types of maps, made during centuries on all kind of solid material: bones, tusks, stone plates, wood, clay, metal, glass, plastics, paper etc. Some of them were preserved for more than thousand years is condition, which still allow us reading their content. But, archiving all kind of maps in digital form is a great problem both for map and archive community. Early digital storage media, like floppy diskettes, magnetic tapes or compact discs aren’t readable anymore; storage formats of archived maps are usually unsupported by new software after only a decade and storage data couldn’t be retrieved.</p><p>Large cartographic companies, state mapping agencies and other larger map producers and providers usually organise their own long term storage system, adapted to their needs and used equipment. Non state-institutional maps, published by some interest groups or organizations, such as orienteering maps are often excluded from such solutions and need special focus. The orienteering maps particularly usually cover some specific smaller areas of interest. On the same territory maps with slightly different content may exist (e.g. versions of map for different orienteering sports’ disciplines), each of those map usually has its specific updating period, also only part of old map can be updated, different maps can overlap. Most of those maps should be safely long term preserved; they are part of mapping heritage, source for different analyses, like analysing former O-events or championships, repeating the same courses at anniversaries or other special occasions. Archived maps are important funds for the owners and have to be safety stored, on the other hand they can be of interest for many users and therefore should be easy accessible for them.</p><p>There are some options for long term document archiving using different file, server or repository systems, where each has advantages and weaknesses. Slovenian orienteering federation together with Archives of the Republic of Slovenia started the test project with possible solutions of long term archiving orienteering maps. Initially we are defining, what should we preserve from orienteering maps: map originals – colour layers, final maps (printed, in raster or in vector form), maps with some most attractive courses (printed or digital), source material (photogrammetric plots, field work scratches, data bases, photos…) and map documentation (standards, procedures, etc). Slovenian orienteering clubs and some others created so far all together about 500 orienteering maps, all of them are registered by Slovenian Orienteering Federation. Our final goal is to archive all of them, including first 22 maps, which have been produced on plastics using analogue procedures. For each map we are intending to store original version (if available) and image for overview. Proposed storage formats are geo tiff for rasters and gml for vector forms, supplied with all relevant metadata (map type, SW type and version used for production, ISOM or other standard that was followed, used source data, owner, accessibility). Documentation should be also INSPIRE compliant. Success of the project might lead to common solution for various other smaller map corpuses, like maps at students’ work and similar.</p>

Capili, Michael D. "Robust Control for Die Attach Machine Recipe Management System." Journal of Engineering Research and Reports, January 29, 2021, 126–29. http://dx.doi.org/10.9734/jerr/2021/v20i117255.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the problems facing the Die Attach engineers at Front of Line is the lack of control of their Die Attach Recipes. Currently, all Recipes are stored on a computer that is accessed by all users and transferred to the Die Attach machine using a diskette via a simple file copy operation.
This kind of setup is vulnerable to the tampering of the Recipes, which may lead to problems in the production line, affecting the quality of the product. It is also difficult in the current setup to know which user copied the Recipe or changed its contents, making those activities untraceable. Finally, the manual management of Die Attach Recipes by file copy raises the risk of human error. To increase the quality of production as well as to protect Recipes from tampering, a computer-based program has been developed to fix the issues in the current setup.
The Die Attach Recipe Management System, or DRMS, is a computer program that can do the following: (1) protect the Die Attach Recipes to prevent unauthorized users from accessing and changing them; (2) monitor users who access the Recipes; and (3) simplify the recovery and storage process to eliminate human error problems.
