Abstract:
Abstract The Phase Locked Loop (PLL) has become an important part of electrical systems. When designing a PLL, an efficient and reliable simulation platform for system evaluation is needed. However, the closed loop simulation of a PLL is time consuming. To address this problem, in this paper, a new PLL model containing both digital and analog parts based on SystemC/SystemC-AMS (BETA version) is presented. Many imperfections such as Voltage Control Oscillator (VCO) noise or reference jitter are included in this model. By comparing with the Matlab model, the SystemC/SystemC-AMS model can dramatically reduce simulation time. Also, by comparing with Analog Devices ADI SimPLL simulation results, Cadence simulation results and real measurement results, the accuracy of the SystemC/SystemC-AMS model is demonstrated. The paper shows the feasibility of a unified design environment for mixed-signal modelling based on SystemC/SystemC-AMS in order to reduce the cost and design time of electrical systems.

L'université de l'Alberta a récemment terminé une étude exhaustive des services de protection de l'hygiène du milieu gérés et offerts localement en Alberta, et en a proposé une nouvelle conception. Dans cet article, les auteurs décrivent brièvement les questions clés et les caractéristiques particulières à la prestation de services d'hygiène du milieu, et y présentent l'approche proposée par l'équipe de recherche albertaine pour aborder ces questions.

Abstract:
Powder produced by gas atomisation of metastable beta alloy Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr has been consolidated using field-assisted sintering technology (FAST) to examine the suitability of the process to produce pre-forged billets as opposed to the conventional multi-step Kroll-VAR-forging route. FAST testing was performed using an FCT Systeme GmbH spark plasma sintering furnace type HP D 25 at The University of Sheffield. The dwell temperature was varied between 800 and 1200°C and the dwell time between 3 and 60 minutes. The process was found to allow very precise control over the beta grain size in Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr by variation of the dwell time and dwell temperature, producing grain sizes between ~40 and ~350 μm. However, it was found that the grain size was increased more by increasing the dwell temperature than increasing the dwell time. The porosity was found to be between 99.5 and 100 % for all dwell temperatures at dwell times of 30 minutes or above. FAST has the ability to produce almost fully consolidated Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr pre-forged material from powder with a controlled beta grain size, which is not possible by other methods.

Le perçage profond (Lu >= 5 x Øoutil) à l'aide de la technologie BTA (Boring Trepanning Association) intervient lorsqu'on souhaite fabriquer des pièces avec un bon rendement productif associé à une bonne qualité d'usinage. Les industries mécaniques évoluent dans un contexte de concurrence perpétuelle, avec des exigences technico-économiques toujours plus importantes. Cette étude résulte donc de la volonté de plusieurs acteurs industriels (AREVA et CIRTES) et universitaire (LEMTA, Université de Lorraine), de faire progresser la compréhension des mécanismes d'usinage qui régissent ce procédé. Une analyse bibliographique approfondie a révélé que cette technologie propose un champ d'investigation très vaste et relativement peu exploré car difficile à appréhender et à étudier. Le but de ce travail est d'analyser et de modéliser les phénomènes ayant lieu au cours d'une opération de perçage profond. Une analyse de la morphologie des copeaux a permis d'introduire un nouveau paramètre permettant d'évaluer les contraintes mécaniques subies par le matériau usiné. L'approche proposée permet quant elle de définir le torseur des contraintes mécaniques en intégrant la géométrie effective de coupe, et ce pour toutes les surfaces de coupe actives d'une tête de forage BTA. Les principes des modélisations utilisées permettent une application relativement aisée à de nombreux matériaux et à partir de l'identification d'un minimum de paramètres. Des moyens expérimentaux originaux ont permis d'identifier des paramètres ainsi que d'ajuster et d'étudier la validité des modélisations. Les limitations de la loi de comportement utilisée ont été mises en évidences, et des perspectives d'études complémentaires ont donc été proposées.Néanmoins, l'ensemble des résultats issus de cette étude ouvrent, modestement, des perspectives intéressantes, notamment dans le domaine d'aide aux choix des paramètres de coupe optimaux, et pour l'aide à la compréhension des phénomènes physiques de la coupe
Deep drilling (Drilling distance >= 5 x Øtool) with BTA system (Boring Trepanning Association) occurs when you produce parts with good productive performance combined with good machining quality. Mechanical industries operate in a context of constant competition, with ever greater technical and economic requirements. This study illustrates the desire of many industrial players (AREVA and CIRTES) and university (LEMTA, Université de Lorraine), to advance in the understanding of machining mechanisms that govern this process. A literature review revealed that this technology offers a vast and relatively unexplored field of investigation and study. The aim of this study is to analyze and modelling the phenomena which occurring in a deep drilling operation. An analysis of the morphology of the chips has introduced a new parameter for assessing the mechanical stresses suffered by the material being machined . The proposed approach allows to define the mechanical stress torsor by integrating the real cutting geometry, for all cut surfaces of active drilling head BTA. The principles of modeling used allow a relatively easy application to many materials and from the identification of a minimum parameters. Original experimental methods have allowed the identification of parameters and adjust and examine the validity of modeling. The limitations of the law of behavior have been used in evidence, and the prospects for further studies have been proposed. Nevertheless, all the results of this study open, modestly, interesting perspectives, especially in the field of helping for the choice of optimum cutting parameters, and help in the understanding of the physical phenomena of the cut

Le systeme beta-adrenergique a ete etudie dans deux systemes physiopathologiques: l'hyperthyroidie et l'insuffisance cardiaque experimentales. Chez le rat, l'hyperthyroidie s'accompagnait d'une regulation positive de la densite des recepteurs beta-adrenergiques alors que, chez le chien, il n'existait pas de variation de leur densite en reponse aux memes doses de thyroxine. Ce travail a donc montre que la regulation des recepteurs beta-adrenergiques est dependante de l'espece dans l'hyperthyroidie. L'absence d'augmentation de la densite des recepteurs beta-adrenergiques chez le chien peut expliquer l'absence d'augmentation de la reponse aux catecholamines observee in-vivo chez cette espece dans l'hyperthyroidie. Une insuffisance cardiaque a ete creee chez le lapin par une double surcharge en volume et en pression. Ce modele a entraine une hypertrophie ventriculaire gauche importante avec une diminution de la fonction ventriculaire gauche de base et en reponse aux catecholamines ainsi qu'une reduction de la densite des recepteurs beta-adrenergiques sans modification de leur affinite pour l'isoprenaline. Il existait parallelement une diminution de l'activite de l'adenylate cyclase a l'etat basal et stimulee par le fluorure de sodium ou la forskoline, suggerant une baisse coordonnee de l'ensemble de la chaine allant du recepteur a l'adenylate cyclase. Le traitement chronique par du propranolol a amemiore la reponse ventriculaire in-vivo aux catecholamines sans empecher la down-regulation des recepteurs beta-adrenergiques

This thesis focuses on design of wireless network nodes using modular construction parts with respect to IEEEŽ 802.15.4 standard. Presented platform joins the benefits of the XBeeŽ wireless module and the AVR ATmega128 microcontroller development system. Sensor network prototype is designed to meet the desired first attempt functionality of embedded platform for collection and delivery of small volumes of control and sensor data between the network and the gateway. The control software was developed for TinyOS operating system. Designed platform is used as the framework for future development and possible functionality extensions in related applications.

Abstract:
Analysis of the dynamics of bilinear systems is critical for a variety of civil, mechanical and aerospace structures that contain gaps or prestress that are caused by cracks, delamination, joints or interfaces amongst components. Recently, a method was developed called bilinear amplitude approximation (BAA) to estimate the response of bilinear systems without gaps or prestress. This method was developed on the idea that the bilinear system can be separated into two time intervals both of which the system behaves as a distinct linear system: (1) the open state and (2) the closed or sliding state. In order to couple the linear vibrational response for each time interval, both geometric and momentum constraints are applied as transition conditions between the states. This paper expands the previous BAA method for the case where there are either gaps or prestress in the system. The new method requires the forcing magnitude to be known so that it can accurately determine when the system transitions between the two states, and the new equilibrium positions for each state for a given forcing magnitude. The new method also finds the bilinear frequency of the system, which cannot be computed using the bilinear frequency approximation (BFA) method previously developed since that method is only accurate for the zero gap and no prestress case. The new BAA and BFA methods are demonstrated on single degree of freedom and three degree of freedom systems for a variety of forcing conditions.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper, the performance of a bat searching algorithm is studied from system dynamics point of view. Bat searching algorithm (BA) is a recently developed swarm intelligence based optimization algorithm which has shown great success when solving complicated optimization problems. Each bat in the BA has two main states: velocity and position. The position represents the solution of the optimization problems while the velocity represents the searching direction and step size during each iteration. Due to the nature of the update equations, the dynamics of the bats are formulated as a group of second-order discrete-time systems. In this paper, the performance of the algorithm is analyzed based on the nature of the responses in the second-order systems. The over-damped response, under-damped responses are studied and the parameters requirements are derived. Moreover, unstable scenarios of the bats are also considered when examining the performance of the algorithm. Numerical evaluations are conducted to test different choices of the parameters in the BA.

Abstract:
Bayesian reliability analysis (BRA) technique has been actively used in reliability assessment for engineered systems. However, there are two key controversies surrounding the BRA, that is, the reasonableness of the prior, and the consistency among all data sets. These issues have been debated in Bayesian analysis for many years, and as we observed, they have not been resolved satisfactorily. These controversies have seriously hindered the applications of BRA as a useful reliability analysis tool to support engineering design. In this paper, a Bayesian reliability analysis methodology with a prior and data validation and adjustment scheme (PDVAS) is developed to address these issues. In order to do that, a consistency measure is defined first that judges the level of consistency among all data sets including the prior. The consistency measure is then used to adjust either the prior or the data or both to the extent that the prior and the data are statistically consistent. This prior and data validation and adjustment scheme is developed for Binomial sampling with Beta prior, called Beta-Binomial Bayesian model. The properties of the scheme are presented and discussed. Various forms of the adjustment formulas are shown and a selection framework of a specific formula, based on engineering design and analysis knowledge, is established. Several illustrative examples are presented which show the reasonableness, effectiveness and usefulness of PDVAS. General discussion of the scheme is offered to enhance the Bayesian Reliability Analysis in engineering design for reliability assessment.

Abstract:
The thermal Economic Dispatch (ED) consist of a complex optimization problem of power systems planning and operation that aims to minimize the overall generation cost. The realistic representation of the thermoelectric power units is modeled by practical constraints comprising valve-point eect, multiple fuels and Prohibited Operating Zones (POZ), which makes the ED a nonconvex and discontinuous mathematical programming problem. This paperis proposes an Enhanced Bat Algorithm (EBA) to solve the ED problem with its practical constraints. The EBA is developed to improve the exploration of the search space through some modications in the original Bat algorithm (BA), with the purpose of increasing the eciency in nding good solutions for large scale ED problems. Case studies with statistical analysis are performed to assess the proposed approach, involving a system with all practical constraintsrelated to the ED problem, which is a contribution of the present paper.

Abstract:
Tethered airborne wind energy systems are among emerging renewable energy technologies in recent years. These systems can harness greater power densities at higher altitudes with lower costs of installation and energy production in comparison with those from conventional ground-based energy harnessing technologies. A Buoyant Airborne Turbine (BAT) as a flying aerostat has a horizontal axis wind turbine within its shell and can elevate up to 600m. There are a number of pertinent parameters such as BAT configurations/component dimensions or its aerodynamic characteristics that impact the system total power performance. Identifying the optimum values of these parameters by conducting theoretical and computational analysis will benefit both lab- and full-scale experiments with more accurate dimensional and aerodynamic analysis. This paper presents an analytical model for investigating the impact of a BAT system scaling and in particular the BAT shell dimensions on its power performance/coefficient. The model uses the flying conditions and BAT shell dimensions from literature to derive the system total mass as a function of BAT shell dimensions. The effect of BAT shell variations/scaling on system power coefficient and its optimum value for stable/safe system design are determined. This work provides a basis for the follow on research phases of this project that has focus on studying BAT system aerodynamic performance and its wake behavior at different scales and environmental conditions.

Multi-agent systems (MAS) have been considered a potential solution for developing adaptive systems. The design of MAS however is difficult because the global effect emerges from local actions and interactions that can be hard to specify and control. In order to achieve high level resilience and robustness of MAS and retain the capability of specifying desired global effects, we propose a cellular self-organizing (CSO) system framework and a biologically inspired behavior based design approach (BDA) and a field based regulative control mechanism (FBR). The BDA approach links global functional requirements with the local behavior design of a CSO system. FBR is a real-time, dynamical, distributed mechanism that regulates the emergence process for CSOs to self-organize and self-reconfigure in complex operation environments. BDA and FBR together extend the system adaptability without imposing global control over local agents. This paper describes the models of CSO, BDA and FBR and demonstrates their effectiveness by presenting simulation based case studies in which CSO agents explore an unknown environment and move an object to designated locations.

This paper presents a line-structured laser scanning system for measuring the coplanrity of BGA chip leads. The corresponding methematics model of the system is gived. And also a study of optical image splitting and splicing technique is constructed and used to improve the resolution of the system. Furthemore, a contact-datum-plane assessment method is established to evaluate the coplanarity of BGA chip leads. The experimental studies on a 20 × 20 array of BGA chip is carryed out, the inaccuracy error of the measurement system is 2σ= 0.033μm.
