Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited<br>Current fiscal constraints are driving the reduction of system life cycle cost (LCC). A key objective of HSI is the reduction of operational cost and the improvement of operational performance. This thesis seeks to develop a Human Systems Integration (HSI) Synthesis Model for Ship Design. This model is based on the premise that ship design characteristics interact with the domains of HSI. The thesis begins with an historical overview of ship architecture and technology and their interactions with the domains of HSI. The HSI Synthesis Model for Ship Design was developed using the Framework of Naval Postgraduate Schools Systems Engineering Ship Synthesis Model. Quantitative data analysis was conducted using Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) design data from Information Handling Services (IHS) Janes database. The data analyzed included 35 ships from 21 nations. Multiple regression analysis consisted of nine independent ship design variables and a response variable of manpower. Data analysis revealed that ship length and ship draught were statistically significant. The proposed HSI Synthesis Model accounted for 49 per cent of the variance of crew complement. This thesis lays the foundation for future qualitative and quantitative analysis of the interaction between ship design characteristics and HSI domains. Additionally, it provides an initial HSI model that can be expanded upon by including additional HSI domains and, ultimately, may lead to a viable design tool for HSI practitioners and systems engineers.

Abstract:
In low temperature processes, such as natural gas liquefaction, refrigeration and power systems are highly interacted with each other through mechanical power consumption and supply. Shaft power consumption of a refrigeration process has a significant impact on equipment selection for a power system. Such influences are eventually passed on and dramatically affect the overall fuel consumption of the power system, which represents a large proportion of operation cost in low temperature processes. This research has been devoted to exploit the interactions between refrigeration and power systems, and develop systematic design methodologies for both refrigeration and power systems. For refrigeration system synthesis, novel refrigeration processes have been proposed to balance the performance between shaft power consumption and process structural complexity. For each refrigeration process, a generic algorithm has been applied to identify the best operating conditions. Although the global optimality can not be guaranteed due to the highly non-linear nature of this problem, greater confidence in solution optimality can be achieved with the adoption of a stochastic optimisation method. With new design variables introduced in these novel refrigeration processes, more flexible condition selection for refrigeration evaporation can be achieved. Thus, more opportunities for cycle efficiency improvement can be exploited.

As companies continue to move towards a diverse, growing set of Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) applications to fulfill their information technology needs, the need to integrate data between them continues to increase. In addition, these diverse application portfolios are becoming more geographically dispersed as more software is provided using the Software as a Service (SaaS) model, and companies continue the pattern of moving their internal data centers to cloud-based computing. As the growth of data integration activities continues, several prominent data integration patterns have emerged, and commercial software packages have been created that covers each of the patterns below: 1. Bulk and/or batch data extraction and delivery (ETL, ELT, etc.); 2. Messaging / Message-oriented data movement; 3. Granular, low-latency data capture and propagation (data synchronization). As the data integration landscape within an organization, and between organizations, becomes larger and more complex, opportunities exist to streamline aspects of the data integrating process not covered by current toolsets including: 1. Extensibility by third parties. Many COTS integration toolsets today are difficult if not impossible to extend by third parties; 2. Capabilities to handle different types of structured data from relational to hierarchical to graph models; 3. Enhanced modeling capabilities through use of data visualization and modeling techniques and tools; 4. Capabilities for automated unit testing of integrations; 5. A unified toolset that covers all three patterns, allowing an enterprise to implement the pattern that best suites business needs for the specific scenario; 6. A Web-based toolset that allows configuration, management and deployment via Web-based technologies allowing geographical indifference for application deployment and integration. While discussing these challenges with a large Fortune 500 client, they expressed the need for an enhanced data integration toolset that would allow them to accomplish such tasks. Given this request, the Object Process Methodology (OPM) and the Opcat toolset were used to begin design of a data integration toolset that could fulfill these needs. Modern-day systems are becoming complex due to the growing needs of the market. These systems contain various subsystems developed by different groups of engineers. Particularly, all mechatronics systems involve different mechanical, electrical and software parts developed by multidisciplinary teams of engineers from different backgrounds. Designing of these complex systems requires effective management, of the engineering and the system integration information, across all the involved disciplines. Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) is one of the effective ways for managing the engineering design process. In MBSE, design information is formally stored in the form of models, which allows better control of requirements throughout the development life cycle and provides ability to perform better analysis. Engineers usually are expert in their own discipline, where they utilize modeling languages and tools with a domain-specific focus. This creation of models with the domain-specific focus does not provide a view of the system as a whole. Hence, in order to have a complete system view, it is required to provide information transfer means across different domains, through models developed in different modeling languages and tools supporting them. Model integration is one of the ways to integrate and transfer model information across different domains. An approach for model integration is proposed, with the focus on the integration between system level models created in SysML and mechanical CAD (MCAD) models. The approach utilizes the feature of SysML to create domain specific profiles and presents a SysML profile for MCAD domain. This profile aids in establishing a mapping between SysML and MCAD concepts, as it allows the extension of SysML constructs to represent MCAD concepts in SysML. Model transformations are used to transform a model created through SysML profile for MCAD in to the corresponding model in a MCAD tool, and vice versa. A robot model is presented to exemplify the working of the approach and to explain the integration of mechanical design model with a system-level design model and vice versa. The approach presented in this thesis depicts a scalable concept, which can be extended towards the integration of other domains with MCAD, by building new relations and profiles in SysML. This approach aids in co-evolution of a system model during domain-specific development activities, hence providing better means to understand the system as a whole.

Ett stort problem med dagens utvecklingsmiljöersom används vid utveckling av ärendehanteringssystem är att de ej är integrerade vilket medföratt användaren måste flytta information mellan system manuellt. Den här studien undersöker hur en integrerad utvecklingsmiljö kan designas för att minskamängden information som användaren måste hålla i minnet och där med främjaanvändarupplevelsen. Studien följer metoden design science research methodology. Enförstudie genomförs för att få en tydlig problembild och med resultatet som grund sätts mål uppför en lösning. Arbetet går igenom tre iterationer för att slutligen finna nio designprinciper. Slutsatsen av studien är de nio identifierade designprinciperna. Tre av principerna anses kunnaappliceras i alla typer av system. De andra sex principerna anses endast vara applicerbara ikontexten av en integrerad utvecklingsmiljö. Designprinciperna främjar användarupplevelsengenom att minska mängden information som användaren manuellt behöver hantera.

D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Chemical Engineering, 2016.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 121-126).<br>In the pharmaceutical industry there has recently been much interest in design spaces: sets of critical process parameters (CPPs) which guarantee that critical quality attributes (CQAs) of a manufacturing process are within specifications. For continuous pharmaceutical processes, design spaces are usually calculated by assuming steady state operation and approximating the mapping between CPPs and CQAs using a Taylor series. The full design space can then be calculated using a plantwide approach or a unit-by-unit approach. Common inner approximations of the design space (e.g. hyper-rectangles) can result in significant conservatism, especially when a unit-by-unit approach is employed. Because control loops tend to have a linearizing effect on processes, design spaces for closed-loop processes can often be calculated using low-order Taylor series approximations, resulting in simpler expressions for the full design space (e.g. polytopes). Control loops also tend to enlarge design spaces, sometimes by more than an order of magnitude. Unfortunately, disturbances, noise, and uncertainties will prevent real processes from ever reaching "steady state". Therefore, design spaces calculated at steady state cannot be used to guarantee quality specifications. In fact, because design spaces fail to take into account any process dynamics, constraining a controller to work within a design space may result in failure to meet quality specifications, significant degradation of controller performance, and input jitter. As a substitute for design space, robust model predictive control (RMPC) is a promising technology for dynamically guaranteeing constraint satisfaction on process outputs. Although many RMPC algorithms have been proposed in the literature, the computational cost of these algorithms tends to be a strong function of the state vector size. This is problematic for continuous pharmaceutical processes, which are typically high- or infinite-dimensional. However, input-output models (e.g. finite step response models) can integrated with traditional RMPC strategies to robustly control high-dimensional systems. Although RMPC can be used to counteract the presence of disturbances, uncertainty, and measurement noise, faults also present a threat to quality constraint satisfaction of continuous pharmaceutical processes. Active fault diagnosis of hybrid systems is particularly difficult due to the explosion of mode combinations with prediction horizon. Fortunately, the set of input sequences which do not guarantee diagnosis can be outer bounded offline as a function of a parameterized initial condition set. The aim of this research work is to propose a method allowing innovation integration in early design stages and supporting architecture design of complex systems that have significant implications for the rest of overall system life-cycle. Focusing on system architectures generation support, this method proposes to use Bayesian networks combined with Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP) techniques in order to semi-automatically generate and evaluate complex systems architectures. Bayesian network model is used to represent the design problem in terms of decision variables, constraints and performances. Furthermore, an architecture generation algorithm is proposed to generate feasible solutions and to cluster them with regard to a given confidence level threshold. This confidence level is representing the estimation of the uncertainty on the overall system. Estimation of architecture performances are also calculated within the Bayesian network. Once the system architectures are generated, a CSP model optimises the component placement regarding placement constraints and optimisation objectives defined by designers. Software has been developed for the purpose of problem modelling and solutions visualisation. Two industrial implementations yielded in a generation of a high number of architecture solutions. In order to test the feasibility of architecture selection in an industrial environment, a study was conducted integrating four system designers. This study underlined the difficulties in defining architecture selection criteria and provides recommendations for the future system architecture selection support.

Abstract:
The development of computer systems in UK hospitals has in recent years been focused on the provision of hospital-wide information systems, known as Hospital Information Support Systems (HISS). This development has been motivated by National Health Service reforms and a realisation that earlier fragmented systems were not meeting the requirements of clinical and nursing staff in the most effective way. Such systems were often developed by external, centralised agencies using systems analysis techniques appropriate to the development of information systems in product orientated organisations. However, the hospital ward, an environment existing at the 'sharp end' of health care, in which many diverse and non-computer related activities take place, presents the system designer with many of the classic problems with which the discipline of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) is concerned. Although a HISS has the potential to improve both the work conditions of clinical staff and the delivery of health care, this may be impeded by many of the common obstacles associated with the introduction of a large and complex computer system into a work environment where tasks are ill defined. This thesis reports on a project that is based upon the application of HCI methods to the health care environment and their contribution to the solution of the problems that such an environment presents. Requirements for the users' interface to the potential HISS are derived using a task analytic approach, involving Task Analysis for Knowledge Descriptions (TAKD). A prototype system has been designed and subsequently evaluated in a hospital ward. The contribution of TAKD to the design and its further applicability to the environment are assessed. The research represents an original application of a formal task analysis method to the design of ward based computer systems, and as such makes a valuable contribution to the areas of medical informatics and HCI. It shows that TAKD has real but limited applicability in this sphere, in that its use can lead to the design of more usable interfaces, while there is a need to combine it with methods aimed at broader systems design if these benefits are to accrue in the development of a HISS. The potential for the integration of task analysis with Design Rationale methods is also demonstrated.

Vehicle chassis control active systems (braking, suspension, steering and driveline), from the first ABS/ESC control unit to the current advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), are progressively revolutionizing the way of thinking and designing the vehicle, improving its interaction with the surrounding world (V2V and V2X) and have led to excellent results in terms of safety and performances (dynamic behavior and drivability). They are usually referred as intelligent vehicles due to a software/hardware architecture able to assist the driver for achieving specific safety margin and/or optimal vehicle dynamic behavior. Moreover, industrial and academic communities agree that these technologies will progress till the diffusion of the so called autonomous cars which are able to drive robustly in a wide range of traffic scenarios. Different autonomous vehicles are already available in Europe, Japan and United States and several solutions have been proposed for smart cities and/or small public area like university campus. In this context, the present research activity aims at improving safety, comfort and performances through the integration of global active chassis control: the purposes are to study, design and implement control strategies to support the driver for achieving one or more final target among safety, comfort and performance. Specifically, the vehicle subsystems that are involved in the present research for active systems development are the steering system, the propulsion system, the transmission and the braking system. The thesis is divided into three sections related to different applications of active systems that, starting from a robust theoretical design procedure, are strongly supported by objective experimental results obtained fromHardware In the Loop (HIL) test rigs and/or proving ground testing sessions. The first chapter is dedicated to one of the most discussed topic about autonomous driving due to its impact from the social point of view and in terms of human error mitigation when the driver is not prompt enough. In particular, it is here analyzed the automated steering control which is already implemented for automatic parking and that could represent also a key element for conventional passenger car in emergency situation where a braking intervention is not enough for avoiding an imminent collision. The activity is focused on different steering controllers design and their implementation for an autonomous vehicle; an obstacle collision avoidance adaptation is introduced for future implementations. Three different controllers, Proportional Derivative (PD), PD+Feedforward (FF) e PD+Integral Sliding Mode (ISM), are designed for tracking a reference trajectory that can be modified in real-time for obstacle avoidance purposes. Furthermore, PD+FF and PD+ISM logic are able to improve the tracking performances of automated steering during cornering maneuvers, relevant fromthe collision avoidance point of view. Path tracking control and its obstacle avoidance enhancement is also shown during experimental tests executed in a proving ground through its implementation for an autonomous vehicle demonstrator. Even if the activity is presented for an autonomous vehicle, the active control can be developed also for a conventional vehicle equipped with an Electronic Power Steering (EPS) or Steer-by-wire architectures. The second chapter describes a Torque Vectoring (TV) control strategy, applied to a Fully Electric Vehicle (FEV) with four independent electric motor (one for each wheel), that aims to optimize the lateral vehicle behavior by a proper electric motor torque regulation. A yaw rate controller is presented and designed in order to achieve a desired steady-state lateral behaviour of the car (handling task). Furthermore, a sideslip angle controller is also integrated to preserve vehicle stability during emergency situations (safety task). LQR, LQR+FF and ISM strategies are formulated and explained for yaw rate and concurrent yaw rate/sideslip angle control techniques also comparing their advantages and weakness points. The TV strategy is implemented and calibrated on a FEV demonstrator by executing experimental maneuvers (step steer, skid pad, lane change and sequence of step steers) thus proving the efficacy of the proposed controller and the safety contribution guaranteed by the sideslip control. The TV could be also applied for internal combustion engine driven vehicles by installing specific torque vectoring differentials, able to distribute the torque generated by the engine to each wheel independently. The TV strategy evaluated in the second chapter can be influenced by the presence of a transmission between themotor (or the engine) and wheels (where the torque control is supposed to be designed): in addition to the mechanical delay introduced by transmission components, the presence of gears backlashes can provoke undesired noises and vibrations in presence of torque sign inversion. The last chapter is thus related to a new method for noises and vibration attenuation for a Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). This is achieved in a new way by integrating the powertrain control with the braking system control, which are historically and conventionally analyzed and designed separately. It is showed that a torsional preload effect can be obtained on transmission components by increasing the wheel torque and concurrently applying a braking wheel torque. For this reason, a pressure following controller is presented and validated through a Hardware In the Loop (HIL) test rig in order to track a reference value of braking torque thus ensuring the desired preload effect and noises reduction. Experimental results demonstrates the efficacy of the controller, also opening new scenario for global chassis control design. Finally, some general conclusions are drawn and possible future activities and recommendations are proposed for further investigations or improvements with respect to the results shown in the present work.

Although suitable CAD tools for thermal and electrical analyses in power electronic systems are available, traditional stand-alone simulation method seldom takes into consideration of the inter-dependency of semiconductor device power loss and junction temperature in an iterative process. However these dependencies are important, especially for applications where both cooling and power losses are driven by complex mechanisms. For a power supply system, a dynamic design process is necessary to address both electrical and thermal issues. It is because the steady state temperatures of the system are obtained from loss-and-temperature iteration. Once a system solid body model is built, iterations between power loss and junction temperature calculations are performed to obtain the steady state temperature distribution. Since reliability and failure rate of components are directly related to temperatures, an accurate model is critical to provide proper thermal management, which achieves maximum power density. All cooling-related data such as placement of components, airflow rate, heat sink size, and device types are subjected to design changes in order to meet ultimately the temperature requirements. The goal of this thesis is to demonstrate the benefits of integrated analysis and design tools applied in distributed power supply systems designs. First, it will significantly speed up the design process and eliminate the errors resulting from repeated manual data entry and information exchange. Second, the integrated electrical-thermal design tools encompass electrical, thermal, layout, and packaging design to obtain the optimal system design.<br>Master of Science

The aim of this research is to develop a framework that provides systemic design guidance for future interfaces that are to provide effective and cognitively suitable information presentation to operators in dynamic and time-critical domains. The aerospace domain has been chosen as the focus for this study. In the aerospace domain there are numerous reported accidents where contributory factors are attributed to pilots’ misunderstanding of automated system configurations, and pilots’ misinterpretation of system behaviour. These problems have occurred as rapid advances in technology have led to an overabundance of ‘useful’ information being presented to the pilot. Currently, the information presented to pilots is often disjointed and distributed across various interfaces where each interface is based on its own design rationale. This creates problems where the pilot either cannot locate information in a timely manner, or misinterprets the available information. There is a need for a systematic design process that deals with meaningfully presenting the abundance of features and interactions of the new technology introduced into the cockpit through the use of existing domain knowledge, structures and strategies drawn from existing pilot training and experience. The thesis is a case study. It shows how a new systematic interface design guidance process was developed by first identifying effective information presentation directly from airforce and airline pilots in their time-critical working environment conducted through observational and empirical studies. The studies provided answers for research questions that were concerned with finding appropriate information presentations for pilots. This resulted in a framework that serves as a guide for the interface designer on how to arrive at, structure and present information to an operator in a cognitively efficient manner. The thesis demonstrates two applications of the design framework, one of which is then evaluated by pilots who demonstrate significantly improved speed and accuracy performance when compared to conventional alphanumerical displays. The applications and limitations of the framework are also discussed.

<p>The development of advanced embedded systems requires a systematic approach as well as advanced tool support in dealing with their increasing complexity. This complexity is due to the increasing functionality that is implemented in embedded systems and stringent (and conflicting) requirements placed upon such systems from various stakeholders. The corresponding system development involves several specialists employing different modeling languages and tools. Integrating their work and the results thereof then becomes a challenge. In order to facilitate system architecting and design integration of different models, an approach that provides dedicated workspaces/views supported by structured information management and information exchange between domain models and tools is required.</p><p>This work is delimited to the context of embedded systems design and taking a model based approach. The goal of the work is to study possible technical solutions for integrating different models and tools, and to develop knowledge, support methods and a prototype tool platform.</p><p>To this end, this thesis examines a number of approaches that focus on the integration of multiple models and tools. Selected approaches are compared and characterized, and the basic mechanisms for integration are identified. Several scenarios are identified and further investigated in case studies. Two case studies have been performed with model transformations as focus. In the first one, integration of Matlab/Simulink® and UML2 are discussed with respect to the motivations, technical possibilities, and challenges. A preliminary mapping strategy, connecting a subset of concepts and constructs of Matlab/Simulink® and UML2, is presented together with a prototype implementation in the Eclipse environment. The second case study aims to enable safety analysis based on system design models in a UML description. A safety analysis tool, HiP-HOPS (Hierarchically Performed Hazard Origin and Propagation Studies), is partially integrated with a UML tool where an EAST-ADL2 based architecture model is developed. The experience and lessons learned from the experiments are reported in this thesis.</p><p>Multiple specific views are involved in the development of embedded systems. This thesis has studied the integration between system architecture design, function development and safety analysis through using UML tools, Matlab/Simulink, and HiP-HOPS. The results indicate that model transformations provide a feasible and promising solution for integrating multiple models and tools. The contributions are believed to be valid for a large class of advanced embedded systems. However, the developed transformations so far are not really scalable. A systematic approach for efficient development of model transformations is desired to standardize the design process and reuse developed transformations. To this end, future studies will be carried out to develop guidelines for model and tool integration and to provide support for structured information at both meta level and instance level.</p>

Foi realizado uma revisão da literatura sobre o tema. Um modelo de cálculo dos fenómenos de transferência de calor e massa foi desenvolvido, assim como da produção de energia eléctrica, e implementado em software de cálculo Matlab/Simulink®. Paralelamente foram conduzidos ensaios experimentais a fim de analisar o comportamento térmico do sistema e respectiva validação do modelo numérico. De modo a melhorar a eficiência total do sistema, foi aplicado um processo de optimização com o método dos algoritmos genéticos. Do estudo, conclui-se que o sistema pode alcançar uma eficiência máxima total de 64% na configuração de inverno e de 32% na configuração de verão; ABSTRACT: This work presents a numerical and experimental analysis of the thermal and electrical performance of a building integrated photovoltaic/thermal system (BIPV/T), with the use of phase change material for stabilize the temperature difference between indoors and outdoors and a rapid stabilization of the PV modules’ temperature. A calculation model was developed of the heat and mass transfer phenomena, as well as a model of a photovoltaic module, which were implemented in Matlab/Simulink®. Experimental tests were performed to analyze the thermal performance of the system and the validation of the numerical model. To improve overall system efficiency, an optimization process with the method of genetic algorithms was applied. From the study, it is concluded that the system can achieve a maximum total efficiency of 64% with winter configuration and 32% with summer configuration.

Smart electronic systems represent a vast category of energy-autonomous and ubiquitously connected systems that incorporate analog, digital and MEMS components, combined with various kinds of sensors, actuators, energy storage devices and power sources. Smart systems generally find applications in the worldwide market for “Monitoring & Control” products and solutions, hence they are used in a broad range of sectors, including automotive, healthcare, Internet of Things, ICT, safety and security, and aerospace. In order to support such wide variety of application scenarios, smart systems integrate a multitude of functionalities, technologies, and materials. The design of smart systems is therefore a complex and major multidisciplinary challenge, as it goes beyond the design of the individual components and subsystems. New design and simulation methodologies are fundamental for exploring the design space in order to find the most efficient trade-off between performance and involved resources, and for evaluating and validating system behavior taking into account the interactions between closely coupled components of different nature. Current system level design methods must indeed accurately manage increasing system complexity and interaction effects between the environment and the system and among the components. Nevertheless, the involved components are usually described using different languages, relying on different models of computation, and need to be jointly simulated at various abstraction levels. This dissertation aims at bridging this gap focusing on novel integration-aware solutions for different aspects of a smart system: the design of digital subsystems and components, the modeling of batteries, and the power estimation of smart systems at system level of design abstraction. Although the design flow of digital components is well consolidated and highly standardized (e.g., commercial, fully automated synthesis & optimization tools, technology libraries, etc.), additional integration-aware design constraints arise due to the interaction of components of different technological domains and to the harsh environment where smart systems typically operate. This work presents a methodology for addressing these new constraints, thus enhancing the design of digital components. As a partial fulfillment of such constraints results in a global degradation of performance, the proposed methodology focuses on the effects rather than the physical sources of the constraints. This allows to move from the typical RTL to a system level of abstraction, i.e., SystemC TLM, obtaining a faster validation of the performance of digital subsystems. Energy efficiency is becoming increasingly important for self-powered smart electronic systems, as the amount of energy they can gather from the environment or accumulate in storage devices cannot be considered constant over time. Power supplies have therefore a very heterogeneous nature: depending on the application, more than one type of power source (e.g., photovoltaic cells, thermoelectric or piezoelectric energy generators) and storage device (e.g., rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells) could be hosted onto the system. As a matter of fact, no single power source could provide the desired level of energy density, power density, current, and voltage to the system for all possible workloads. Batteries are being significantly used in smart electronic systems due to the their increased energy capacity, improved production process, and lower cost over the last years. However, a battery is an electrochemical device that involves complicated chemical reactions resulting in many non-idealities of its behavior. Therefore, a smart system designer has to characterize these non-idealities in order to accurately model how the battery delivers power to the system. This dissertation introduces a systematic methodology for the automatic construction of battery models from datasheet information, thus avoiding costly and time-consuming measurements of battery characteristics. This methodology allows generating models for several battery charge and discharge characteristics with tunable accuracy according to the amount of the available manufacturers’ data, and without any limitation in battery chemistry, materials, form factor, and size. Finally, this work introduces a modeling and simulation framework for the system level estimation of power end energy flows in smart systems. Current simulationor model-based design approaches do not target a smart system as a whole, but rather single domains (digital, analog, power devices, etc.), and make use of proprietary tools and pre-characterized models having fixed abstraction level and fixed semantics. The proposed methodology uses principles borrowed from the system level functional simulation of digital systems and extends them for simulating the behavior of subsystems whose functionality is to generate, convert, or store energy (e.g., power sources, voltage regulators, energy storage devices, etc.). This has been done at system level using standard open-source tools such as SystemC AMS and IP-XACT, which allow to explicitly represent current and voltage similarly to digital logic signals. The implemented approach facilitates virtual prototyping, architecture exploration, and integration validation, with high flexibility and modularity.

Creating flexible and automated production facilities is a complex process that requires high levels of cooperation involving all mechatronics disciplines, where software tools being utilised have to work as closely as their users. Some of these tools are well-integrated but others can hardly exchange any data. This research aims to integrate the software systems applied by the mechatronic engineering disciplines to enable an enhanced design process characterised by a more parallel and iterative work flow. This thesis approaches systems integration from a data modelling point of view because it sees information transfer between heterogeneous data models as a key element of systems integration. A new approach has been developed which is called middle-in data modelling strategy since it is a combination of currently applied top-down and bottom-up approaches. It includes the separation of data into core design data which is modelled top-down and detailed design data modules which are modelled bottom-up. The effectiveness of the integration approach has been demonstrated in a case study undertaken for the mechatronic engineering design process of body shop production lines in the automotive industry. However, the application of the middle-in data modelling strategy is not limited to this use case: it can be used to enhance a variety of system integration tasks. The middle-in data modelling strategy is tested and evaluated in comparison with present top-down and bottom-up data modelling strategies on the basis of three test cases. These test cases simulated how the systems integration solutions based on the different data modelling strategies react to certain disturbances in the data exchange process as they would likely occur during industrial engineering design work. The result is that the top-down data modelling strategy is best in maintaining data integrity and consistency while the bottom-up strategy is most flexibly adaptable to further developments of systems integration solutions. The middle-in strategy combines the advantages of top-down and bottom-up approaches while their weaknesses and disadvantages are kept at a minimum. Hence, it enables the maintenance of data modelling consistency while being responsive to multidisciplinary requirements and adaptive during its step-by-step introduction into an industrial engineering process.

In today’s practical reality there are many different tools being used in their respective phases of thesystem development lifecycle. Every tool employs its own underlying metamodel and these metamodelstend to vary greatly in size and complexity, making them difficult to integrate. One solution to overcomethis problem is to build a tool integration framework that is based on a single, shared metamodel.The iFEST project aims to specify and develop such a tool integration framework for tools used in thedevelopment of heterogeneous and multi-core embedded systems. This framework is known as the iFESTTool Integration Framework or iFEST IF.The iFEST IF uses Web services based on the Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration (OSLC)standards and specifications to make the tools within the tool chain communicate with each other. Tovalidate the framework, an industrial case study called ‘Wind Turbine’, using several embedded systemstools, has been carried out. Tools used to design, implement and test a controller for a wind turbine havebeen integrated in a prototype tool chain. To expose tools’ internal data through Web services, a tooladaptor is needed. This work reports on the development of such a tool adaptor for the RequirementsManagement module of HP Application Lifecycle Management (ALM), one of the tools used in the WindTurbine industrial case study. A generalization of the challenges faced while developing the tool adaptoris made. These challenges indicate that, despite having a tool integration framework, tool integration canstill be a difficult task with many obstacles to overcome. The thesis addresses electronic power distribution systems for the residential applications. Presented are both, renewable energy ac-nanogrid system along with the vehicle-to-grid technology implementation, and envisioned structure and operation of dc-nanogrid addressing all system components chosen as an inherent part of the future electrical architecture. The large-scale model is built and tested in the laboratory environment covering a few operational modes of the ac-nanogrid, while later in the thesis is shown how dc bus signaling technique could be contemplated for the energy management of the renewable energy sources and their maximal utilization. Thesis however puts more focus on the dc-nanogrid system to explore its benefits and advantages for the electrical systems of the future homes that can easily impact not only residential, but also microgrid, grid and intergrid levels. Thus, presented is low frequency terminal behavioral modeling of the system components in dc-nanogrid motivated by the fact that system engineers working on the system-level design rarely have access to all the information required to model converters and system components, other than specification and data given in the datasheets. Using terminal behavioral modeling, converters are measured on-line and their low frequency dynamics is identified by the means of the four transfer functions characteristically used in two port network models. This approach could significantly improve system-level design and simulations. In addition to previously mentioned, thesis addresses terminal behavioral modeling of dc-dc converters with non-linear static behavior showing hybrid behavioral models based on the Hammerstein approach.<br>Master of Science

The current approach for improving design processes is mostly based on intuitive observations followed by incremental changes to the existing methodologies. However, today’s fast-paced world needs rapid incorporation of new technologies and methods into design methodologies. Recent advances in the application of Artificial Intelligence to design Multi-agent Design Systems in particular-provide an opportunity to accomplish this goal. The inter-disciplinary collaboration between Computer Science and Engineering Design provides the means to develop systematic and holistic approaches for constructing superior design methodologies. An innovative approach has been developed that is based on simulating the design process using a multi-agent system that mimics the behavior of the design team. The multi-agent system implements a knowledge-based model of design in which highly specialized knowledge from expert sources is applied to synthesize a design. The multi-agent system activates the pieces of design knowledge when they become applicable. The use of knowledge by agents is recorded by tracing the steps that the agents have taken during a design project. Many traces are generated by solving a large number of design projects that differ in their requirements. A set of design methodologies is constructed by using inductive learning techniques to generalize the traces generated. These methodologies then can be used to guide design teams through future design projects."

The use of computer modeling is fast increasing in almost every scientific, engineering and business arena. This dissertation investigates some challenging issues in design, modeling and analysis of computer experiments, which will consist of four major parts. In the first part, a new approach is developed to combine data from approximate and detailed simulations to build a surrogate model based on some stochastic models. In the second part, we propose some Bayesian hierarchical Gaussian process models to integrate data from different types of experiments. The third part concerns the development of latent variable models for computer experiments with multivariate response with application to data center temperature modeling. The last chapter is devoted to the development of nested space-filling designs for multiple experiments with different levels of accuracy.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the study of how sketch-based systems can be improved to enhance idea generation process in conceptual design stage. It is also concerned with achieving a kind of integration between sketch-based systems and CAD systems to complete the digitization of the design process as sketching phase is still not integrated with other phases due to the different nature of it and the incomplete digitization of sketching phase itself. Previous studies identified three main related issues: sketching process, sketch-based modeling, and the integration between the digitized design phases. Here, the thesis is motivated from the desire to improve sketch-based modeling to support idea generation process but unlike previous studies that only focused on the technical or drawing part of sketching, this thesis attempts to concentrate more on the mental part of the sketching process which play a key role in developing ideas in design. Another motivation of this thesis is to produce a kind of integration between sketch-based systems and CAD systems to enable 3D models produced by sketching to be edited in detailed design stage. As such, there are two main contributions have been addressed in this thesis. The first contribution is the presenting of a new approach in designing sketch-based systems that enable more support for idea generation by separating thinking and developing ideas from the 3D modeling process. This kind of separation allows designers to think freely and concentrate more on their ideas rather than 3D modeling. the second contribution is achieving a kind of integration between gesture-based systems and CAD systems by using an IGES file in exchanging data between systems and a new method to organize data within the file in an order that make it more understood by feature recognition embedded in commercial CAD systems.

Abstract:
Environmental concerns about the effect of greenhouse gases have led governments to regulate industrial CO2 emissions, including through emissions caps, trading and penalties, thus creating economic incentives to reduce CO2 emissions. This research focuses on strategies to reduce CO2 emissions from energy systems in the context of the process industries. In the process industries, energy systems consume fuel to generate steam and power for site process units. Improving energy efficiency can reduce costs of energy generation and use, as well as CO2 emissions. This research develops an integrated design and optimisation methodology for energy systems, allowing effective capture and control of carbon dioxide emissions. The first focus of this study is to develop a systematic approach to evaluate combinatorial strategies for reducing CO2 emissions, based on a techno-economic analysis. A conceptual design procedure with hierarchical decision-making is introduced to combine CO2 emissions reduction strategies, accounting for interactions between site components, including the heat exchanger network and utility system. CO2 emissions reduction options considered in development of this procedure include process integration techniques for improving the energy efficiency of the site and fuel switching. The proposed approach considers trade-offs between the economy of energy retrofit and CO2 emissions penalties. Opportunity for reducing the CO2 penalty is included in the economic evaluation of the combined emissions reduction strategies. A mathematical model for simultaneous optimization of emissions reduction strategies is developed. In addition to emissions reduction strategies, options for trading CO2 allowances are considered in the model. The proposed mathematical method applies Mixed Integer Non Linear Programming (MINLP) optimization, which employs a superstructure of the strategies for CO2 reduction. The proposed mathematical model relates the selected options to their operating and capital costs and to their associated CO2 emissions, allowing the optimizer to search for the optimal combination of emissions reduction strategies. While the reduction in CO2 emissions through process integration techniques is based on the existing configuration of a site and the associated structural limitations, integration of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies can provide greater mitigation of CO2 emissions from a site. However, important challenges of implementing CCS in the process industries are the energetic and economic impact of the CCS plant on the integrated site. In the second part of this study, these energy-economic issues are explored. The CCS technologies addressed in this thesis include post- and pre-combustion CO2 capture techniques. Simulation of each capture technique is carried out in process simulation software to characterize the energy performance of the CO2 capture plant. Sensitivity analyses are carried out for key parameters of the CO2 capture plant. The relationship between these key parameters and the energy balance of the capture plant is represented using a simple energy performance model for the CO2 capture plant. This model allows the integration of the CO2 capture plant with the site utility system to be explored. Interactions between the utility system and CO2 capture plant are considered. The site utility system, together with the CO2 capture plant, is optimized for minimum operating cost. The proposed procedures are illustrated by application to a case study of a medium-scale oil refinery. The results illustrate that to reduce CO2 emissions, heat integration, utility system optimization and fuel switching provide more cost-effective solutions than integrating CCS technologies. The mathematical model allows more cost-effective solutions to be identified than using sequential, conceptual methods, but the value of the conceptual method for developing insights is also illustrated. The results demonstrate that, depending on the potential of the site for increasing heat recovery and the type of fuel used on site, solutions that combine energy efficiency and fuel switching can provide up to 40% reduction in site CO2 emissions. Integrating a post-combustion CO2 capture plant with the site utility system can provide up to 90 mol% pure CO2 for sequestration; however, the high capital cost of the capture plant reduces the economic performance of the integrated site. The high heat demand of post-combustion CO2 capture for solvent regeneration increases the fuel consumption of the site and its utility system, which in turn reduces the recovery of CO2. The results reveal that pre-combustion CO2 capture can provide opportunities for heat and power generation to improve the techno-economic performance of the overall integrated site.

Inductive power transmission (IPT) for electric vehicles (EVs) is a promising emergent technology that seems able to improve the electric mobility acceptance. In the last two decades many researchers have proved its feasibility and the possibility to use it to replace the common conductive systems for the charge of the on-board battery. Many efforts are currently aimed to extend the IPT technology towards its use for the charge during the vehicle motion. This application, commonly indicated as dynamic IPT, is aimed to overcome the limit represented by the long stops needed for the recharge introducing also the possibility of reducing the battery capacity installed on vehicle. An IPT system is essentially based on the resonance of two magnetically coupled inductors, the transmitter, placed on or under the ground, and the receiver, placed under the vehicle floor. The typical operating frequency range for the EVs application goes from 20 kHz to approximately 100 kHz. The coupling between the two inductors takes place through a large air-gap, usually about 10-30 cm. This thesis presents the results of the research activities aimed to the creation of a prototype for the dynamic IPT oriented to the private transport. Starting from an analysis of the state of the art and the current research projects on this domain, this work presents the development of a circuit model able to describe the electromagnetic phenomena at the base of the power transfer and the interface with the power electronics. This model provides the information at the base of the design and the implementation of a dedicated low cost-high effciency H-bridge converter for the supply of the transmitter side. A general architecture of the power electronics that manages the receiver side is proposed together with the additional protection circuits. A methodology for the integrated design of the magnetic structure is illustrated covering the aspects of the matching with the power electronics, the integration on an existing vehicle and the installation on the road infrastructure. A series of activities aimed to the implementation of a dedicated test site are presented and discussed. In particular, the activities related to the creation of the electrical infrastructure and the issues and methods for the embedding of the transmitters in the road pavement are presented. The final goal is the creation of a dedicated IPT charging line one hundred meters long. Finally, a methodology for the assessment of the human exposure is presented and applied to the developed solution.

La transmission inductive de puissance (IPT) pour les véhicules électriques est une technologie émergente prometteuse qui semble capable d'améliorer l'acceptation de la mobilité électrique. Au cours des deux dernières décennies, de nombreux chercheurs ont démontré la faisabilité et la possibilité de l'utiliser pour remplacer les systèmes conducteurs classiques pour la charge de la batterie à bord du véhicule. Actuellement de nombreux efforts visent à étendre la technologie IPT vers son utilisation pour la charge pendant le mouvement du véhicule. Cette application, généralement appelée IPT dynamique, vise à surmonter la limite représentée par les arrêts prolongés nécessaires pour la recharge introduisant également la possibilité de réduction de la capacité de la batterie installée à bord du véhicule. Un système IPT est essentiellement basé sur la résonance de deux inducteurs magnétiquement couplés, l'émetteur, placé sur ou sous le sol, et le récepteur, placé sous le plancher du véhicule. La gamme de fréquence de fonctionnement typique pour les applications automobiles va de 20 kHz à environ 100 kHz. Le couplage entre les deux inductances s'effectue à travers un entrefer important, généralement d'environ 10-30 cm. Cette thèse présente les résultats des activités de recherche visant à la création d'un prototype pour l'IPT dynamique orienté vers le transport privé. A partir d'une analyse de l'état de l'art et des projets de recherche en cours dans ce domaine, ce travail présente le développement d'un modèle de circuit capable de décrire les phénomènes électromagnétiques à la base du transfert de puissance et l'interface avec l'électronique de puissance. Les analyses effectuées à travers le modèle développé fournissent la base pour la conception et la mise en œuvre d'un convertisseur dédié à faible coût et efficacité élevée pour l'alimentation du côté transmetteur. Une architecture générale de l'électronique de puissance qui gère le côté récepteur est proposée avec les circuits de protection supplémentaires. Une méthodologie pour la conception intégrée de la structure magnétique est illustrée. Cette méthodologie couvre les aspects de l'interface avec l'électronique de puissance, l'intégration sur un véhicule existant et l'installation sur l'infrastructure routière. Une série d'activités visant à la réalisation d'un site d'essai dédié sont présentées et discutées. En particulier, les activités liées à la création de l'infrastructure électrique ainsi que les questions et les méthodes d'implantation des émetteurs dans le revêtement routier sont présentées. L'objectif final est la création d'une ligne de recharge IPT dédiée de 100 mètres de long.
